Whoa! I take a week or so off from Bitcointalk and come back to bad news about the SP30.  Sad

On the positive side, it is great to see Spond handling themselves professionally, as usual. Thanks for keeping the communication open and honest.

Looking forward to hearing more about the compensation options.

Run a Bitcoin node, support the network.

@ Bitfury debate

At the end of the day it doesn´t really matter who deploys the huge farms.

As long as there is money to be made, farms will come online. If the smaller miners can make money, the bigger mines can make even more.

At some point, difficulty growth will settle where income from mining equals the power costs of gear + a small "profit".

I purchased the sp30 in the hope of staying ahead of the game for some time, but the 60% higher than promised power draw really cuts deep into my profits.
I am interested to see how spondoolies will compensate this.

Yup. That calculation has to be made.

We took a risk based on 'guaranteed' specs and knowing that SPTech has always taken care of their customers up to the this point in time I am bullish on them continuing to do whatever it takes to keep that record going. There are many ways to skin the cat on this I am interested in what finally comes out as compensation.

Either way I am grateful at least for the honesty. I am also grateful they resolved the issue so that future chips will be better and more in keeping to the specs they initially proposed. Given the players in the marketplace you can rightly put trust in this team as they are on the ball. Error was admitted. Error will be corrected. Error will make them more diligent in future to avoid this very problem yet again come the next generation chip.

There are only a few players in the market place that produce a quality product and deliver on time. There are even fewer that admit their mistakes openly and immediately and then find the problem and offer up the solution to the customers. If you are still in the market for miners come 2015 Spondoolies Tech is still one the best to buy from even after this "failure".

Even with the calls for people NOT to pre-order the SP30 with the compensation for me is still the best buy I could have made in May for this type of machine power and hash rate wise although as said power and hash rate hit has definitely impacted the results making it less pretty than it was at 6 Th/s machine with lower power draw.

Will I pre-order in 2015 on their next chip? We will see what the market is like... with more and more hash power coming online in ever larger farms the market has changed significantly in the past 6 months. The next 6 will make mining unrecognizable to the small miner unless they start pooling resources. Also who will still be selling chips / miners to the public in 6 months will certainly be a concern if anyone is still buying miners in small batches at that point.

Yes spondoolies, terrible name, are acting real professional. .... spreading gossip about their competitors. ...... uou would think a team that failed to meet their power specs would have better things to do than gossip..... professional for sure

Looks like Guy was right, bitfury did just build another 20MW datacenter.

http://venturebeat.com/2014/07/30/bitfury-announces-hosted-mining-services/

It's a bit unclear whether it's already filled with hardware or not.

Also noticed "Some 40 percent of all Bitcoins are mined using BitFury chips." and "BitFury has an impressive track record, having successfully delivered three prior generations of silicon and has a roadmap to at least double performance-per-watt every six months. "

The Georgian DC is filled with hardware. They're working on the next one now.
Three generations of silicon are rev1, rev2 and LightFury, all 55nm custom made, UMC
Roadmap is nice, execution is lacking. Valery's full custom unique method is extremely challenging on the more advanced nodes. As I wrote, they're scrapped their 20nm effort after investing a lot of time on it.
They have enough money (endless...) to hired top notch designers though. 2015 will be interesting.

Yes, because bitcoin mining was invented to give YOU a profit and totally has nothing to do with the security of the blockchain right?

Every manufacturer I know of has their own farm (besides SP). It's time people stop pretending that mining is a game for the little guy.

I'm a little guy and so are you. (Unless you've got a multimillion dollar operation going on)

I've read the bitcoin whitepaper and I don't remember anything that says the point of bitcoin mining is so anyone with electricity can make a profit.

The beautiful thing about bitcoin mining is that the rewards scale perfectly linearly. If a big miner wants to mine 10x more bitcoin than I do, they need to have 10x as much hashrate (I'm ignoring variance and pool fees for simplicity).

I often hear people say that the small miner is at a disadvantage, but honestly, I don't see that at all provided the small miner has low power costs and can get hardware for a small premium over production and engineering costs. Mining hardware manufacturers need to make a profit to stay viable.

I think it actually gets much harder for the big guys to scale after a certain point. It's not easy to get access to facilities that have the capacity to run and cool megawatts worth of mining equipment.

I don't think Spondoolies or Bitmain are making huge profits on the S3 or SP30 given the cost to engineer, produce, and ship these miners all over the world.

Does anyone remember how many SP30s have been sold so we could roughly estimate how much hashing power they will add to the network in August?

August was roughly 1000 units total.

Sometimes I can see YOUR viewpoint but admittedly, most of the time I don't. What I was meaning and perhaps you might have gathered is, speak for yourself, if you think about it, that's all YOU really know for sure. Yep, I'm part of the "little guy" but I can speak for myself, I don't need you to be my spokes person. As far as the (bitcoin) white papers goes (an nope I haven't read it, doubt if I really ever will because it is what it is, it's not law), this is the "wild west" if you have noticed by now. the "bitcoin" algorithm is for all but that doesn't mean "Bitcoin" is.

Regards,

Sort of.

I think it is our responsibility to not order equipment from folks that harm the bitcoin ecosystem.  I haven't been ordering equipment for a long time from Bitfury for these reasons (same reason I don't use ghash.io)

Zvi/Guy:

Can you foresee any problems with using a voltage of around 253V to power the SP30s?

I see that both PSUs are rated for up to 264V. I don't see efficiency statistics for any voltages above 230V for the Emerson or Murata in their datasheets, but based on data I've seen for other PSUs (e.g. http://info.servertech.com/blog/?Tag=power%20efficiency), efficiency should increase monotonically with input voltage as long as the MOSFETs can handle the voltage without breakdown (i.e. you're in the rated input voltage range). Judging from the sparse data I've seen (e.g. IT Power Supply column of the table in the link above), the increase from 240V to 253V might gain us maybe 0.25% to 0.4% in efficiency. Higher efficiency should mean more power available with the same PSU thermal load, which could mean more performance. If 253V boosts the PSU efficiency from 92.0% to 92.4%, then the PSU should be able to deliver about (1-8%/7.6%) = 5.3% more power for the same amount of PSU internal heat load, which might translate into 4% higher hashrate, as long as we tweaked the firmware to permit it. Those numbers probably aren't very accurate, but maybe they are in the right ballpark. What do you think?

P.S.: I received notice of shipment of my July unit yesterday. It's scheduled to arrive tomorrow. Thanks for your hard work!

You cant be serious right ? the bit fury CEO stated that he wants to own close to 50% of all bitcoins minted , the whole point of the bitcoin network is decentralization
to combat the big banking institutions that preload the economic dice with thier huge influence infrastructure and power.  If Santoshi had wanted big huge mega farms he probably would
have made the code closed source but guess what adoption would have been way slower if at all.

Like i said i give props to SP-tech even though they have issues with their sp30 for the fact that the at least ship their CUSTOMERS hardware out on time instead of using customer hardware to
mint thier own coins and then send out the hardware late and in a used state thus reducing the potential customer ROI with increased nethash funded by guess who CUSTOMERS.

I never do pre-orders but i did this one just for the fact that SP tech ships thier hardware and strong state that they will NEVER create a megafarm, if that holds true we will see.

The only way you can take up for these DATorhall (KNC, BF) hardware vendors is if you are one of then personally they get the middle finger.
