What's special about CLAMS? How has it managed to avoid the altcoin apocalypse? Could anyone clue this "noob" in with a tdlr?

JD has 360k coins and stakes 1k per day, so I figure if you have 360 coins you'll stake about once per day on average, and so with 36 you can expect to stake every 10 days.
I'd be interested to hear how often anyone with a large amount of CLAM is staking.
How about one with a small amount? I don't think your empirical testing scales. 103 CLAMS here, last stake was just over 10 days ago. Based on your back of the envelope calcs, I probably should have staked about 3 times over that period.

The longer you let it stake the closer you will get to that number

Based on your back of the envelope calcs, I probably should have staked about 3 times over that period. It's not elitism that made me ask about people with a large amount. If you're staking a small amount, variance is going to play a huge part in things, and your anecdotal evidence isn't going to be very useful. If you're staking a large amount, you'll be much more likely to be staking roughly the same amount each day. Over the last week, for instance, Just-Dice has staked these amounts: 2015-01-29 1117.64710000 2015-01-30 1068.49620000 2015-01-31 1110.82150000 2015-02-01 1080.12930000 2015-02-02 1056.51520000 2015-02-03 1067.15616470 2015-02-04 1101.75940000 It's different each day, but only by around 5%. If you have 100 CLAMs it could easily take a few weeks to stake even once, or you could stake twice in a single day. Neither of those outcomes would be surprising. If JD was to stake 500 or 2000 in a day, that would be surprising. It's the law of large numbers at work.

534 MB!!! I changed my mind. I don't want move this folder. The only file you need to sync to get the behaviour you're wanting (same funds on two machines) is the wallet.dat file. But it's a bad idea to do so, particularly if you intend to ever run the CLAM client on both machines at the same time. If you can be sure that you only ever run one instance of the client at a time, and that the wallet.dat file is fully synced from one machine to the other before you switch to running it on the other machine then it may be safe to do so, but even then I wouldn't be sure. The danger is that the client expects to be the only program modifying the wallet.dat file. If dropbox starts modifying the file while the CLAM client is running, bad things can and probably will happen.

So, what made JustDice adopt them - what's special about CLAMS?
I like the initial distribution - CLAMs were effectively all pre-mined by the developers and then all given away, to everyone, equally. Every BTC, LTC, and DOGE address that had a non-dust balance on 12th May 2014 received 4.6 CLAM. There was a little left over, and that was all burned. After that, CLAM is only created by staking. This suits my needs at Just-Dice because I didn't want it to get out of hand again like it did when we accepted Bitcoin. In those days we attracted over 60,000 BTC worth of deposits, which is a silly amount to have to be responsible for looking after. With CLAM there are some 15 million CLAM waiting for people to "dig up" from the initial distribution. The threat of that actually happening keeps the price from going up too much (there are only half a million CLAM that have ever moved, so the unclaimed 15 million is very significant). tldr: small(ish) and fair(ish)

Shouldn't we assume that the developers moved their own BTC/LTC/DOGE into many addresses, sometime before May 12th, and that CLAMS are maybe one of the greatest premines in altcoin history? It's brilliant because we don't know if the unclaimed CLAMS belong to random people, an exchange's hot wallet, or the devs.

It's brilliant because we don't know if the unclaimed CLAMS belong to random people, an exchange's hot wallet, or the devs. They claim they didn't do this, but there's no way to know for sure. One thing I'd point out is that CLAM was around for 6 months before Just-Dice started using it, and for that 6 months the price was pretty steadily falling to zero. I would expect most people knowingly sitting on a big pile of unclaimed CLAM would have dug it up and sold it at some point during that 6 months rather than watching as it became increasingly worthless. That argument possibly doesn't apply to the CLAM developers themselves who would be more likely to be optimistic about CLAM's future, having so much time and energy invested in it.

I think the higher the price goes, the more people are willing to sell. It was around 0.0055 for so long that 0.007 seems like a good price for people to sell at. I doubt we'll go much higher for a while.

I really like how CLAMS are structured that it's basically a bond. The price is partially based not only on the interest rate but also the interest rate compared to other products. I actually cashed out clams at a slight loss because I learned about okcoin futures and that has a much higher risk and return rate. Yeah and we also need to take into account capital appreciation versus interest rate. It's a 27% gain for people who bought at 0.0055. But eventually the price should steadily rise as JD user base grows or maybe other demand will arise for clams. And like you said people might sell but then the price will go up once the people who sell have no more to sell. One thing if you invest is that you should be careful not to hangout in the chat room. Dangerous place for investors. It's just a big trap of people trying to get you to gamble.
