1) Nothing will ever change in the US until they get special interest money out of politics (like the rest of the developed world has done).
2) The common response from Muricans (especially in this nut house lol) is going to be MOAR GUNS, if those poor kids at school were armed
with their own military hardware they could protect themselves against the crazies....

The US can't even pass legislation to close a well known "gun show" loop hole, something roughly 90% of Americans want.

Is there really no special interest money in politics around the world? I feel like that can't be true (Maybe just cause I'm in America, I feel that what happens here regarding politics is normal)

The gun show loophole and other gun control ideas are an interesing topic, though I don't think people notice that most of these mass shootings that occurred in the US wouldn't have been stopped by any gun control solutions proposed. Check the source (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/fact-checker/wp/2015/12/10/marco-rubios-claim-that-no-recent-mass-shootings-would-have-been-prevented-by-gun-laws/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.9ff8dbe61b07)

We have an issue of enforcement in this country, not an issue of the laws we have.

The US spend too much on military yes, I don't agree with NASA fund cuts though. The race for space colonization is just at its early stages, it would suck big time if the US would fall behind it.

Being first would allow America to extract resources from a previously untapped source. Think of how the New World finally allowed the Europeans to fight off the Ottomans who stagnated and lacked access to all those New World resources.

Alright thats fair squatz, and it would definitely have a large effect.  A lot of us think America spends way too much on its military budget but they may be the main thing keeping the dollar as the world currency.

That and the support it's giving the Middle East. It's practically the US military that guarantees the dollar's value.

Yeah, people forget that the big reason that the US has the immense influence it has it that many nations rely on it for intelligence, defense, tech sharing, selling of military items, etc.

The US isn't just this world nation because of them being nice and trading, they've built themselves into it with our immense strength. Yet again, not saying if any of this is good or bad -- just stating that it is present.
2284  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Homelessness has no obvious solution? Wasteful use of resources on: May 15, 2019, 05:30:59 PM
squatz is advocating for a big military budget because it creates jobs?..... Shocked Shocked

bits has it correct, the goal is to eliminate jobs altogether with technology and have enough basic needs for every person.

The state of big cities in America is terrible, especially on the west coast.  I think the wealthy get some type of sick thrill when seeing people in absolute poverty.  Or they want to keep their other workers scared when they see homeless and they act like a good little employee.

I'm not advocating for anything. I'm just saying that people do have to understand the economic impact that our military has.

Not supporting (or for that matter, not supporting) anything. Just simply stating a fact.

*yawn*

Once Crypto faces a real problem, there will be a bipartisan push to do something like this. This guy is in the pockets of the financial industry, and is just trying to flex his muscles so he can use that to gain more money. Nothing new in the world of politics.

Sadly.
2286  Other / Politics & Society / Re: SCOTUS to become real conservative majority by 2019 on: May 15, 2019, 03:12:32 AM
I was under the impression she is going to fully recover from the cancer she had.

I do agree that RGB is very old and will probably not last through the end of Trump's second term if he get reelected. This is of course speculation.

Well... let me put in some additional details.

Darth Vader Ginsburg is not a smoker and the cancer nodules which were removed from her lungs were not a result of either active or passive smoking. Those were a result from other medical conditions.

She was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1999, and with pancreatic cancer in 2009. Her medical team claims that in both cases, it was early stage cancer and the treatment was 100% success. But now, it looks possible that the nodules were result of metastatic disease from either of the two earlier cases.

That means that her treatment for the earlier cancer cases were not exactly 100% successful. Cancer has spread from colon or pancreas, to the lungs. Her doctors can try to hide this fact, and claim that these nodules will not reappear again. They have reasons to do so. But I am skeptical. If the disease is spreading, then more and more nodules will be found and in some cases the surgeons may not be able to remove them. In such a situation, given her age, she may have 3 to 6 months left to live.
I think you are assuming this was the same cancer each time. This may not be the case.

Ginsburg is having a dedicated team to look after the PR campaign. Every day, they are claiming that she is as healthy as an eighteen year old.
Ultimately her health doesn't matter as long as she is alive. She has a lifetime appointment and can continue to serve until she either dies or retires (or is impeached, but this is unlikely).

Trump should respect RBGs lifetime appointment. If he is seen as trying to push her out because she is sick (even if she is very sick), he will have difficulty getting any replacement confirmed.

+1 to that.

We should never compromise the integrity of the court itself, once we do that we compromise the court forever. Some may say that RBG is unfit to serve and such (Consevatives are going to say this, as it benefits them) though they wouldn't say the same thing if a Right leaning justice was sick as well.

Let her serve out her (lifetime) term, of this same sort of presidential pressure is going to be used to push out Conservative justices.
2287  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Homelessness has no obvious solution? on: May 15, 2019, 03:09:34 AM
Do you understand the implications of cutting something like the military budget in half though? The US military is currently the largest single employer in the United States, currently employing 3.2 million people.

That doesn't include all of the people that are employed indirectly by the US military, which would include hundreds of thousands of US contractors. Plus the fact that these employees are creating more and more business with their salaries -- as they're creating jobs for people that supply their consumption (consumption meaning food, recreation, etc)

While I don't personally think this is the best use of the money as the US military does waste an absolute shit ton of money on things it doesn't need, people can't underestimate the economic impact (around the world) that the US posseses with their military.

2290  Economy / Digital goods / 20 Percent off ANY Steam Games on: May 14, 2019, 12:30:50 AM
I don't know if this is something that people would be interested in, though I would love to help people if they would like it.

I'd like to offer people 20 PERCENT OFF ANY GAME ON STEAM for payment in Bitcoin. As of right now I'd be handling these transactions manually, though at a certain point if this was to blow up I'd try to have this done automatically

THIS IS FOR ANY GAME BY THE WAY. Post here or message me for purchasing!

If you'd like to use escrow, the fee is on you. If not, that's fine!

2292  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin vs USD Storing Value on: May 10, 2019, 01:29:24 AM
Usd value will keep falling although bitcoin is not exist. It is because the fiat money system is not good. The government can print money regardless the amount of gold that the government have. So it is better for us to use gold or silver as storing value. And we can use bitcoin as an investment. The volatility of bitcoin is still too extreeme.

Yes, you are correct, bitcoin and it's value has no effect on the US dollar purchasing power. It is simply following the trend of inflation and our CPI rates. As there is a limited number of BTC, inflation rates do not apply.

However, one thing I must point out @Nunoluck...
while the US has the ability to continuously print US Dollars, we abandoned the gold standard back under Nixon in 1971. It is NOT better for us to use gold or silver as storing value.

As a complete aside to all of this as well.

Gold and Silver (precious metals) has been one of the worst asset classes to date, you'd make much better returns if you were to invest in Real Estate, Stocks, Etc. I never understand why people think that 'if the world ends, we're going back to gold.

No. If the world ends (zombies and shit) then we're going to be using bullets, guns, and food.
2293  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Multiple Bomb blasts in Srilanka - churches and hotel ( Read OP for Updates) on: May 07, 2019, 12:58:44 AM
New updates: please check OP - Edit 8-

Thanks

I am meriting you 5 because of the diligent and useful updating of the OP. That is a good method.
+1 To that.

Without a doubt an amazing thing to see someone continue to update their threads instead of just posting 50 different threads that are just different news headlines.

This is what we should have more of in P&S
2294  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Crypto-friendliest country in the world? on: May 04, 2019, 10:29:52 PM
But at the same time people holding Swiss bank accounts are considered criminals for money laundering so how it's crypto-friendly when it is considered illegal to hold money in those bank accounts?

I know UAE is not crypto-friendly but they literally charge 0 taxes even if you have millions in your bank account and don't even ask much questions.
This was long back. Now these people too have begun to levy taxation in different forms. They aren't crypto friendly, as of now they are technology focused. Particularly they keep themselves into the development of integrating each and everything with the blockchain.

Alright, that's what I was thinking anyway.

Not surprised to see a nation which is attempting to be startup friendly -- as that does make sense, though being Crypto friendly may make you a target of certain nations that are already in control of the current banking system. If you know what I mean.

Doesn't the UAE only do this for certain businesses? I didn't know this was something that extended to individual peoples incomes and such, just thought it was a tax break as a way to attempt to bring businesses (and therefore jobs) into certain 'economic free' sectors. Which is just a fancy way of saying that they're not going to be charging tax in that area for reasons of economic development.

Thanks for mentioning my post and acknowledging the fact that I am updating the post, now I know that at least one person read all the updates Smiley. I really appreciate that.

Ah always keep that going man, I’d love to just have to visit your thread with the good updates and info rather than see 25 threads with all these little updates.

Thought I dropped merit on ya before for it, but I fixed it!
2297  Other / Politics & Society / Re: I am willing to argue public education has ruined this country... on: April 28, 2019, 07:24:45 PM
WOW. An Atlas post. I haven't seen that name in a long time.

The US Department of Education is based on a Soviet model. It is about creating indoctrination and socialization, not educating, teaching logic, or critical thought. This process has seriously degraded the abilities of hundreds of millions who might otherwise be living under logic and enjoying the fruits of critical thought.

So I'm going to assume that in the past there was a way to post anonymously on the forum? I've literally never seen this before.....

.... Maybe it's just that they actually don't think the program is worth all of the effort because in 2015 there was a major change in legislation which forced them to be more compliant.....

Yeah...let's all agree that's what's really happening...

This sort of thing will help me sleep at night, right?

But yeah, I know what you're saying and everything, I fully get it. Just being a tad playful.

Yes, please appoint squatz1, one of the few non-nutjob residents in P&S. It's a weird board, seems tangential to "Bitcoin forum", but there is a lot of good discussion in it - probably better than most boards outside of the technical/mining ones.

Thanks Suchmoon, it really does mean a lot! I try, hehe!
2300  Other / Politics & Society / Re: NSA Recommends Dropping Phone Surveillance Program on: April 25, 2019, 06:22:50 PM
NSA is going to be recommending the ending of a program that collects information (such as metadata) regarding your phone calls and texts (if you live in the US) They're going to be doing this as they cite that the program is a logistical nightmare to attempt to control, as new laws have been passed by lawmakers to ensure proper privacy compliance

They're saying that for the amount of legal compliance necessary to continue the program, it will just be better to shut it down.

I personally don't know if this is just a publicity stunt, and the government is just going to continue spying on the American people. Though I do hope this isn't such, and that these programs slowly come to an end as people notice that they really don't do more than invade the lives of innocent Americans.

Article - https://www.wsj.com/articles/nsa-recommends-dropping-phone-surveillance-program-11556138247

So....

Translating....

When they said they had the program, it wasn't really working, but now that they say they don't need it and it's working properly, it's working perfectly?

Eh. That's a theory that you could run with. Maybe it's just that they actually don't think the program is worth all of the effort because in 2015 there was a major change in legislation which forced them to be more compliant.

Why even broadcast this news to the whole world? The transatlantic cables are still monitored. The solution is simple: if it is illegal in the US just outsource the job to one of the other 5 ಠ_ಠ...

This is true though, they're still going to be having the other nations in the world spying on us because that fits within current legislation. It is without a doubt a overreach of government, though there's nothing we can do about it.
