1941  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is there a culture where people are sorted by aptitude at age 9/10? on: September 03, 2019, 10:22:03 PM
I'm starting to think it becomes obvious who is going to be quite intelligent in certain fields by about the age of 8 of 9 and I'm wondering if anyone does this with education?

To me it seems obvious that everyone should be able to get referred from a teacher or take a test (potentially a compulsory one like sats in the UK) in order to determine their strengths and their weaknesses. Thinking back to high school (ages 10-16) for the entire time I didn't really do much, sure we got to learn about a lot of varied subjects but it wasn't particularly time specific - you could pick up a language at age 7 probably to similar ease as you could at age 11). Producing something like a research focused education (similar to what is done in universities) should be of a higher benefit to students giften in certain areas to take that forward. A lot of the time I talk to English, art, history etc students and they have to focus on getting advanced techniques rather than following their own style which I consider to be a waste of time as you're not teaching people to be creative and individual and look at other implications, you're telling them to become a cog. An example I have of this would be the use of punctuation which isn't very well defined in itself a lot of the time, learning things like their they're and there might be helpful but we'll probably do away with them in a few years and you'll be forced to infer by context (like when spoken).

Even though I mention tests it should ultimately be up to a pupil to decide what they want...

In germany after finishing the primary school you have to decide on what kind of school you will continue to go.

To visit the gymnasium and later study in university you need a good school record, a letter from your primary school which says you have the abilities to visit a gymnasium and depending on gymnasium also an entry exam.

Btw. at the end of primary school Einstein (based on his school records) was a rather average pupil who had problems with reading...

A brain reaches full maturity at around 18-21 years.

So pretty much all of the reports that "European children are smarter then American children" is only due to the fact that they're sorting children by how smart they are at a certain age, and only letting the smartest people continue on further into academia while the rest are left for the trades and such?

Wow.
1942  Other / Politics & Society / Too much tech in schools with no benefit, researchers agree. on: September 03, 2019, 10:19:20 PM
Across the country parents are asking districts for metrics showing how large investments in tech for education are helping educate. You'd think that the disruptive nature of tech would be able to help kids learn faster. But researchers are showing that's not the case, as researchers from the Rand corp have said this:

Researchers at Rand Corp. and elsewhere say there is no clear evidence showing which new tech-related education offerings or approaches work in schools.

Obviously there are certain things that help kids. Such as certain pieces of tech (which are old now, and not what the article is talking about) such as powerpoint, presentations, videos, interactive question answering through something like kahoot, and so on and so forth.

But the 'new tech' for children is removing a pen and paper from the classroom, opting for everything to be digital and showing no real benefit. The only people who are benefiting is the tech sector, who are sponsoring massive amounts of these initiatives and advocating for more and more districts to join in.

I'd (alongside parents of the children in these articles) would rather see a mixed experience. Allowing pen and paper in classes that require it (such as math, science, etc) and a computer where it fits (maybe history, english, etc) But even that is an issue, as I don't think every child learn the same and they should be given the choice in the way that they're going to be learning material.

1943  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Obamas $15 Million Mansion - A Complete Hypocrisy on: September 03, 2019, 01:21:30 AM
I'm no fan of the likes of Obama or the Clintons but if people want to pay them high dollar for "speaking engagements" so what.

That just does not rise to the point of something a person should be concerned about.

Yeah, Russian speaking engagements for half a mil and the money into the Foundation stinks to high heaven. But IT'S TRUMP THAT'S COLLUDING WITH THE RUSSIANS!!!

I wouldn't think this is something that we can say "so what" with and move in. It's not okay that someone was able to sell the power of their presidency, then clintons senator role, then her secretary of state role off to different countries. They're able to walk away with a ton of money for selling the powers of their office.

They're able to get away with it due to the fact that the 'bribes' come later on, and it not being during their tenure.
1944  Other / Politics & Society / Re: US Treasury Blacklists Bitcoin, Litecoin Addresses of Chinese ‘Drug Kingpins’ on: September 03, 2019, 01:10:09 AM
...someone could receive blacklisted funds due to him providing a good/service for such funds, but now they're unable to use these funds / withdraw these funds on exchanges due to them being tainted.....

No, I do not think that would be possible.

What you are saying is (for example) that Coinbase would not deal with those addresses.

But the "Receive address" which is blacklisted has no relation to a send address.

So now, you might argue, "But Coinbase won't send to those blacklisted addresses!"

It doesn't matter, any wallet will.

Oh wait, I didn't even notice that.

That's beyond stupid, they didn't blacklist the receive addresses. So unless they're hoping that people are just going to 'taint' the coins by saying they're not going to deal with the coins that originated from there, they can just send them somewhere else or accept coins at another address.

This is so stupid.
1945  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Is Erdogan dead? on: September 03, 2019, 01:02:02 AM
This is clearly very sensational news, apart from what he has done, what we see may be a bit too harsh, but surely the policy must be agreed and some disagree, let alone brought into the political sphere.
Hopefully the news spread can be ascertained for the next few days. I hope the country will remain safe and there will be no turmoil, because I do not like the riots that have caused many people to become miserable.

Even though you're grave-digging old threads:

He's not dead, pretty fucking simple. This is a conspiracy, and it's just not true.
1946  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Obamas $15 Million Mansion - A Complete Hypocrisy on: September 03, 2019, 12:58:25 AM
I suspect that most of these speaking fees are from wealthy people that are paying back "Obama for laws and regulations that he passed that helped out their businesses.

Obama is just another hypocrite, acting like he cared about the poor people when he lives lavishly.  Reminds me of all the church pastors that do the same.

Oh yeah, no doubt.

This is the only way that a person would be able to be enriched by the office.

Though there is something to be said about someone who doesn't live the lavish lifestyle after the office - someone like Jimmy Carter, who is actually trying to advance certain causes and is volunteering his time instead of sucking the dick of lobbyists for money and some power.
1947  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Green New Deal on: September 01, 2019, 11:32:30 PM
There's no way you actually think that electricity is going to get CHEAPER under the green new deal. There's no way in the least.

If we stop using a good amount of the cheap fossil fuels, and switch to other means which would include solar, wind, hydro, etc. We're talking about a VERY large amount of money spent to setup this system and a large amount of land and so on and so forth. The industry probably isn't even close to ready for this sort of demand.

This would cause electricity prices to increase drastically as people are going to have to help undertake this project in some way.
1948  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Italy’s Prime Minister resigns snap elections to follow. on: September 01, 2019, 11:18:42 PM
PD and M5S will try hard to avoid new elections, and if elections happen this year then it will be a cakewalk for Lega. LN already has 33% to 37% vote share, and together with Brothers of Italy and Forza Italia they would be able to form a governing coalition quite comfortably (with a combined vote share of more than 50%). What Luigi Di Maio and Giuseppe Conte has done is to sabotage democracy. It is only going to make Salvini stronger than ever before. PD and M5S are having completely opposing ideologies. Even if they form a government together, it is not going to last long. I predict the government collapsing in less than an year, and fresh elections being called. Both the parties will be wiped out.
It would have been better if there was new elections because the coalition between the two parties are still short of a majority and indeed it's going to make Salvini even more popular because this doesn't seem that it's going to work, this is a desperate attempt to postpone the inevitable.

Oh yeah, this isn't going to do anything more then just push off what's going to happen next. I think this will actually enrage the voters more, as they're going to feel like their person -- Salvini -- has been stripped of his 'power' (even if he wasn't PM, nor had more members, he is still the most popular party)

So we'll see where this brings us I guess.
1949  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Italy’s Prime Minister resigns snap elections to follow. on: August 30, 2019, 11:04:12 PM
This situation has already been 'fixed' in the eyes of those that don't like Matteo Salvini, Conte has been placed back into the role as PM of Italy and he has a new coalition backing him.

Not surprising in the least, though it did seem like that for a couple days that the new coalition was going to be unable to form.

Matteo Salvini's party is still the most popular in italy, and could see a resurgence when the next election comes -- giving them more power in parliament.

The situation in Italy had more drama than GOT season 8, lots of twists and turn and finally Conte is back hopefully he’ll do good work and retain his chair when elections come. There’s no doubt about Salvini’s party being popular, but I feel their reputation took a hit when they decided to withdraw their support for Conte. Only time will tell who is the winner of this feud, because currently we’re back to square one and will have to wait for next elections.

Eh I don't know about that.

I think that for the Salvini party this is a slap in the face to all of the people that worked to elect them. Leaving them with little to no power, and locked out due to a new coalition is something that isn't going to go very well in the eyes of the voters (at least in my eyes)

I guess we'll be able to tell at some point, I'll probably comment back then.
Salvini was at the governance with the 18% of preferences, the 5stars with the 37%. Now the five stars are at the governance with Democrats (18%). It is a number question, and for this Salvini is a big penis

Check out the polls on who the most popular party is -- https://www.politico.eu/italy/

That's showing that this could get very interesting, very fast. Since the last election the 5 star party has crashed in the polls, like CRASHED.
1950  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: What happened to SafeDice? on: August 30, 2019, 02:46:06 PM
...But it seems like the owner either went through an exit scam, or dissapeared fully and there is no way for people with money on the site to withdraw from it.

I think you should not make an open statement of scam since your are still making an enquiry from the body of your post until someone who can give full details about the site does that.

If you are alleging scam already then you can put a post on that with prove in scam accusation board.

Maybe they just got a maintenance?  Have you checked their social medias? There might be an announcement regarding that. As I can say even if they're going to shutdown eventually somebody may know it...

Alright both of you are simply spamming for signature campaign purposes. You haven't looked into the issue at all, and I'd know if knowledgeable people who know about the subject area could help here. Not people that are just going to post generic garbage with no real value.

1951  Economy / Gambling discussion / What happened to SafeDice? on: August 30, 2019, 02:14:52 PM
Don't know if anyone knows the story of SafeDice and why it went down.

SafeDie was a pretty solid site, low house edge and allowed people to invest in their bankroll. But it seems like the owner either went through an exit scam, or dissapeared fully and there is no way for people with money on the site to withdraw from it.

Anyone here have a real good story on what happened here? As I used to play SafeDice a pretty large amount.
1952  Other / Politics & Society / Re: [Opinion] Would a Community Managed Social Network be any good? on: August 30, 2019, 02:09:46 PM
Reddit is a community managed social network.

To some degree, so it bitcointalk.

Reddit is more community managed then Bitcointalk. Thought there is still an overarching policy from the company in charge of the Reddit platform, where they set what subreddits are okay and what is okay to be on a subreddit. Meaning that -- they can ban certain subreddits due to them not being within what they, or their advertises like.

So yes, while there is some moderation from the 'community' there is still overarching admins that handle what is OKAY to be on reddit.

The problem with not having anyone enforcing basic rules is that the community would quickly become a hotspot for kiddie porn and people encouraging real world violence.  And eventually a government will find a way to shut it down.

Well yes, that's what I've been saying over and over. No managament to enforce any rules is going to lead to an issue, but once you have a management team in the first place you're going to lead to the issue of this management team wanting to continue to expand the forum, and the only way to do this (if you want money) is to start putting up ads.

And to put up ads, you're going to have to silence more and more views in order to get ad money.

That's just how it works.
1953  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: What's your best profitable live casino game. on: August 30, 2019, 02:06:13 PM
The most profitable long term --> No game at all. Avoiding gambling is something that is going to be able to save you large amounts of money.

Most profitable for me, short term --> Dice, with a low house edge. (Anything high edge is stupid, and a complete waste of your money as you're going to make the odds of you losing greater and greater as the year goes on)

Biden has made another horrible gaffe, he's now made up a war star relating to Afghanistan and used it on the campaign trail. People picked up on the fact that it wasn't true, and that he had made it up.

CNN, by some chance has been able to turn this back on Trump -- check here --> https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/30/politics/joe-biden-donald-trump-truth-2020-campaign/index.html

1955  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Do you really think U.S. government worries about drugs? on: August 30, 2019, 01:51:19 PM
Well yes, there's a major reason for the government to care about drugs. The government does have a major responsibility (and tries very hard) to stop the flow of drugs into this country from other countries around us, and from within through growing from people inside the country.

Do I think the government has done a good job with this: No.

The government has messed up the solutions for this. They've failed to notice that certain drugs are okay: Such as Marijuana, and that private prisons in the US want to keep prisoners within their confines for as long as possible

Non violent drug offenders shouldn't be going to jail for life, we should treat it like an addition and try to rehabilitate them.

Honestly thought I had you on ignore, because most of the stuff you post (including this) is fucking garbage information. This is without a doubt stupid as well.

I could understand if you were saying that there are side effects to vaccines that interact with people in certain ways, which is true. For some people, vaccines negatives (in the sense of side effects) outweigh the benefit of getting a vaccine.

But once you go into the fact that all anti vaxxers are great - even the ones that hate vaccines 'just becaseuse' or because they 'cause autism' or some shit like that. That's some bullshit.

not because we lack the technology, it's already here; but there is still too many technology illiterates out there.

what do you think?

How can he push this vision while the Democrat party is still opposed to Voter ID?

https://www.forbes.com/sites/billybambrough/2019/08/27/andrew-yang-2020-us-presidential-election-issue/#64d051458b68

When people are running for election they say many things, and about 90 percent of the things they say never come to fruition anyway. That's the numbers I would imagine for the frontrunner anyway. For someone with Yang, who has NO CHANCE of winning the office -- is saying things just to say them, and isn't going to be able to get any of these things done ever.

So -- yeah, no chance.
1960  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Interesting Interview With Chinese Billionaire Exile Guo Wengui on: August 30, 2019, 12:46:52 AM
Was it China or Russia that they say companies had a direct phone line to the communist government and the government would simply ring it if they are going out of line or something.

This is just basically what many people have been talking about. The CCP have no check and balance and very little input from the public. If America can act badly even with these restraints, just imagine what an unhindered "emperor" would do (Xi purged the party and removed term limits).

Honestly I'd assume both.

Both countries operate in this very weird sphere where capitalism is allowed, but only if you're willing to work with the government in question. If not, you're going to be arrested (on some random crime) and removed from power. Then you'd be replaced with someone who is willing to work within the confines of the government.

Horrible, but that's the system they've built over there.
