2161  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 2020 Democrats on: July 07, 2019, 03:18:30 AM
In this thread, the alt right echo chamber that is P&S tries to figure out the democrats base voters.

Clinton 2.0 (Biden) would be the worst thing the dems can do for 2020!

Bidens best day was the day he announced.

Well yeah, and I think most progressives think this as well. Though the establishment side of the party is going to want Biden, as he's not going to bring too much radical change to the party and he's just going to continue the status quo.

I don't know if I believe the whole 'Biden is a punching bag theory' I think he was just ill-prepared, and though he'd be able to steamroll these new candidates with his expertise/history in politics. Harris is a good candidate, without a doubt, and I think people doubted her ability to campaign and fight on the campaign trail. He's still their best bet at winning, at least in the eyes of the voters.

She's not a real progressive though, she's a law and order candidate that's trying to hide it -- as Theymos said. I know he had that really good article about her sometime ago.
2162  Other / Politics & Society / Government shouldn't outlaw Private Insurance and Democrats know that on: July 06, 2019, 04:40:55 AM
Now that the first Democratic primary has come to a close, we've seen a significant shift in the minds of Democrats relating to a substantial question -- "Should Americans be able to keep their private insurance" and the answer, now, for most Democrats is "Yes."

Bernie is the only person to deviate from this, saying that private health insurance companies should be outlawed. Which I think we all know is never going to happen, but even thinking about the government coming into an industry (with such a large amount of people employed) and telling them that they're no longer needed is appalling. Just think, an entire sector is gone (one that employs hundreds of thousands of Americans) just like that.

If the Government can do a better job with their whole Medicare for all Plan for cheaper, then so be it. More to them, but I don't think the government should outlaw private insurance -- nor should they force them out with regulations, fees, taxes, etc. in a way to make their plan seem better. I'd like to see if the government can compete and if they can then so be it -- if it brings costs down for Americans, then I'm happy.

What does everyone else think?

Might be grave-digging here, but is there any-chance you'd be able to update this Lutpin?

Very interesting to see the growth.
I do still make monthly snapshots of my investments, so no data is lost while this thread isn't being updated. However, I currently do not have that raw data prepared and presentable in any form.

The main reason I stopped doing updates here is because I really didn't like the way I was presenting the returns.
My plan is to transition to an interactive chart that allows all readers to gain more information and value from it than the previous screenshots of a chart and table do.
I've occasionally worked on preparing that and on carrying over the data from the old format to the new one, but that's low priority for me and I've been kept busy by other things.
If I have some surplus free time, maybe once summer vacations come along, I'd be more than happy to finish that up and add the months currently missing.
Updates should also be easier for me to make, once everything is set in the new place.

If there's a huge demand for the data meanwhile, I could also make some limited updates to this thread until the new format is ready, eg only do updates on BTC and ETH.
Let me know what you think about both, and how many people would be interested in it, if anyone.

Would without a doubt just like to see BTC personally. I would think there is some demand here either way! For anything really.

2166  Other / Serious discussion / US Bank Account on: June 25, 2019, 10:35:36 PM
Currently looking for a good bank that won't ban me for crypto purchases.

I would be choosing between anything that is feeless, and would love to see if its possible to stay with a bank that I currently use. But if that's not possible then so be it.

Some of the choices I've been mulling over: Citi Bank, Chase, TD Bank, Ally Bank, Capital One.

I'd love to hear what some people think about these bank choices, and if they're going to have an issue with crypto purchases (such as by shutting down my account)

2168  Other / Politics & Society / Re: U.S. Lawmaker Calls For Facebook To Pause Cryptocurrency Project on: June 24, 2019, 04:59:08 PM
I don't think she has any legal authority to force Facebook to stop developing Libra. She probably does have the authority to subpoena Facebook executives to testify before her committee.

I also don't think there is a basis for being concerned that Facebook has a lot of data on its users, when discussing Libra. Most of what Facebook has access to is irrelevant to Libra, and banks have access to much more relevant information about their customers, especially their long standing customers, and they have access to information contained in third party databases such as credit reporting agencies.

The concept of a stablecoin is also not new, and stablecoins have had mainstream acceptance in the crypto space for years now.

There are a lot of reasons to be concerned about Facebook, but IMO libra is not one of them.

Yeah that'll be all. And even at that, Zuckerberg could (if he wanted to) fail to listen to the subpoena and just be held in contempt. I've seen little to no reaction from Congress when this happens anyway.

Even if he does speak in front of them, it's not going to mean anything anyway as Facebook is going to use their team of lawyers and lobbyists to make this work alongside the lobbyists of VISA, mastercard, etc.

Sounds like political BS / theater.
2169  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Iran shoots down a U.S. drone on: June 24, 2019, 04:57:08 PM
Iran shot a SPY DRONE of the US which was there to?

To do what?

SPY on them.

What the fuck were they supposed to do? Let the drone run as if it didn't exist?

There is conflicting information over where the drone was, as US forces are saying that it was in international waters and that it can't be shot down - while Iran is stating that it was over their airspace.

Either way, I don't see the upside of using aggression on the biggest military in the world.

Is there a reason for the announcement on here, which is a longtime after the ICO?
The community is focused on other channels, primarily Telegram groups. This board is cluttered with many threads. It isn't a long time after the ICO, IEO was a month ago.

Ah I see, confused the IEO and ICO.

Not ragging on this idea at all. I've actually hard Alfred Kahn speak before and he's a very interesting and amazing partner to have. Wish you guys luck!

2173  Other / Politics & Society / Re: The Truth About Yelp - and its culture of slander on: June 12, 2019, 12:08:08 PM
Don't know if anyone has actually ever had to deal with Yelp to advertise with them, but I've had the pleasure of doing this before. It's a horrible experience, as they wouldn't stop harassing me everyday asking for me to advertise on their platform and saying that they had tons of coupons for a business like mine.

Then I asked what their average CPC is, which at first they didn't want to answer but they said the average for my industry is $7-10 -- which is about 5 times the cost per click of google ads.

So not only do they try to continue annoying you in order to get you to sign up, they do it in a way that makes it seem like it's a 'deal' and that they're looking out for you and your business.

Yelp is a shit show.

I second this experience. I find Yelp useful for restaurant and business reviews (provided there are numerous reviews) but as a business I would not do business with them.

To be a hundred percent honest, because of my experiences with yelp on a business basis -- I don't think I could find it reliable due to the fact that it is massively manipulated, and that Yelp will help your business achieve higher ratings if you are to pay them.

They're a business, and people forget that Yelp isn't going to be looking out for your best interest as a consumer. They're looking for their best interest as a business.

AVOID YELP AT ALL COSTS. STILL A SHIT SHOW.
2174  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Progressive ideals are popular, until you mention the price! on: June 11, 2019, 02:34:20 PM
More Marxism

This study is kind of like the inverse of the premise of the OP. The op examines the idea that people are all for these programs, but only if you totally disregard the negative effects of the cost, once that is part of the discussion, not so much. Your source is basically saying money can be saved, if you totally ignore the cost in the form of shit treatment, shortages, and the fact the government gets to dictate to you how you get your healthcare at every stage.

I mean it's not even about that. It's about the fact that the assumptions made in the paper couldn't and won't be able to come true even if this legislation was put into law. Bernie only has savings in is Medicare for all bill because of the fact that HE made assumptions in there about healthcare costs going down about 40 percent while increasing the number of people accessing healthcare by 10 percent.

It's an insane assumption, and it won't work.
2175  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Las Vegas Shooting - Witness Saw More Than One Shooter on: June 11, 2019, 02:29:20 PM
Is there any other witness that is able to corroborate this story by one witness? There's no way that we're going to base an entire conspiracy theory claim off of one person -- who is not going to be as close to credible as multiple people who are saying the same thing.

Any footage of this happening or anything along those lines? Etc?

I do know that there is barely any information out there about this shooting, though I do think it is vital to show proper evidence before we make crazy claims.
2176  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What stances from the opposite of your political spectrum do you support? on: June 10, 2019, 08:28:27 PM
I consider the current democrats and republicans to serve the same interests.  They are backing big corporations and billionaires, they both want big military and capitalism to rule all.  I consider myself neither of these.  I do like a lot of libertarian principles like no punishments for victimless crimes such as drug use.  However, I do not agree with their economic views because they want a system that exploits workers and rewards owners of capital that do little to no work.

As crazy as this sounds, I personally think this is true as well.

I think that both parties put on a big show and dance against one another on a bunch of issues that neither one of them really care about -- think about it in the sense of gun control, healthcare, etc. They're going to let one party win some, then lose some, then the other party comes in and does the same. It's a way to show that they're fighting and it justifies the amount of money that they raise for their campaigns. Because without opposition theirs no need for either party to raise money (as they'd be able to do whatever they want, by default)

When both sides are being bipartisan -- usually on issues of war, taking away our rights, taking away privacy, etc -- this is when you see what they really want to do and what their true motives are. They continue to strip us of our rights, and they put all this BS in the news that never includes the REAL ISSUES.

~snip~

This is one reason why progressives don't like Biden.  Bidens biggest challenge will be his LONG history, Anita Hill, Crime Bill, Hyde Amendment, he loves Chenney ETC ETC ETC.

Biden has had his problems with the national dem base before, he failed in 88 and 08 to win the presidential nomination (got rekt pretty hard in both).

Feb is still so far away and Biden will continue to flip flop on lots of his old policies/stances.  Lie to everyone and say whatever you think people want to hear on any given day, IOW be a good corporate politician.

Anita Hill? You mean the one that lied about Clarence Thomas; who was part of the modern-day lynching? That one.  There was no proof that Clarence Thomas did was he was accused of doing.  There was a ton of evidence that this accused behavior was different than what seen experienced by numerous other women.

And, the fact that she took another position with him years after this incident was alleged to have occurred makes it suspect.

Biden's problem is that he is an old-school corporatist Dem trying to make his way in a party where intersectional social theory has taken root.  He will do well with the labor Dems, the pro-life and the old coalition of the Dems. If the Dems purge the pro-lifer's from their ranks they are going to tank badly.

This is without a doubt true, at least the part about Biden being apart of the old side of the party.

Biden is old news to progressives and new Democrats, he's apart of the establishment that always makes big promises and never deliveries (or at least has a small track record) He's a guy that is in bed with Corporate lobbyist, and is probably going to be a war-hawk if he were to ever gain some real power.

Even saw this VOX article going after him, which shows the progressive side is on the attack against him.

Joe Biden is the Hillary Clinton of 2020

Americans want outsiders, reformers, and fresh faces, not politicians with decades of baggage.
2178  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Progressive ideals are popular, until you mention the price! on: June 10, 2019, 03:52:24 PM
Talking about cost is a great strategy for muddying the waters because its a mirage in that people hear the cost and don't realize it isn't extra cost but it is reduced costs from what they are already paying.  College and healthcare are too expensive right now and would be much cheaper if they were "free".  Muddying the waters on cost is literally the only way to reduce support for these policies since everyone does indeed support them.  Its a smart strategy but only works until people understand the whole story.

Healthcare for example is already too expensive in terms of both cost and outcome
Quote
a new study from the Political Economy Research Institute (PERI) at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst finds that single-payer health care will save the US $5.1 trillion over a decade while drastically cutting working-class Americans’ health spending.

The value of a degree would be reduced for people who didn't have the competitive academic merit to earn that spot in school and that degree because now, people with more academic merit, who previously priced out and could not afford college, will have that spot and will eventually be their competitor in the workplace.  This is the essence of the overall fear of free stuff.  People who have success simply by being born into money will start to become outcompeted by the meritocracy these programs could produced.  Some people who could afford the tuition won't even be able to get in at all if we let in smarter, poorer students.   Its a scary possibility for them.

This 'savings' isn't legitimate though, as the study itself is basing its estimates off of what the bill states would happen -- as they made some very bold claims about being able to lower reimbursement costs by 40 percent.

The researcher of the study even stated the following:
Or, as Blahous told us via email, achieving a 40 percent reduction in reimbursement rates is an “unlikely outcome” and “actual costs are likely to be substantially greater.”

“To argue that we can get to that level of savings by getting rid of the health insurance middleman is inconsistent with my study,” Blahous said. “To lend credibility to the $2 trillion savings number specifically, one would have to argue that we can make those 40 percent cuts to providers at the same time as increasing demand by about 11 percent, without triggering disruptions of access to care that lawmakers and the public find unacceptable.”

So the savings isn't going to happen, and the system IS going to cost more.

Check here:

In his report, Blahous provided an alternative-scenario estimate, one that assumed instead that payments to health care providers would “remain equal on average to the current-law blend of higher private and lower public reimbursement rates.” Under that scenario, there would be a net increase in health care spending.

There's no data or research that shows the system is going to be cheaper, there are data and research to show that the system is going to be more expensive. There's no reason to complicate what you 'beleive' will happen and what will most likely happen based on research by professionals.

Even with all of this, I think that the party thinks (and knows) that Biden is probably their only chance to be able to win the Whitehouse. So they're thinking in terms of politics and winning, instead of thinking about the groups that they betrayed in the last election cycle (The Bernie Bros)

Biden is going to look bad though, and I do think that Trump and other prominent Republicans will take advantage of this flip-flopping. THis is going to be fun to see if Biden wins the nomination.

I don't understand how people are going to be able to look through all of these flipping stances.
2180  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Progressive ideals are popular, until you mention the price! on: June 10, 2019, 02:03:38 PM
The ideals are appealing and true that they cost a lot!

But if we apply other progressive ideas like opposing war, the cost can be covered up! The billions of dollars on defense and war can be applied for free education and health care Tongue

Raising the minimum wage would seem fatal for small businesses but like even the businesses themselves will sell more as their customers will earn more hence buy more which will lead to more production and balance in employment.

Kinda true that the value of degree in the competition world of getting job would reduce since if everyone gets free education. But for the greater good and human resources, that would be good. But I'm unsure on this Cheesy

I don't think I'd say that spending massive amounts of money on Defense and War are progressive principles, I think thats a policy out of the non-hawk conservatives, libertarians, fiscal conservatives, and so on and so forth.

People do understand that we do have to spend some money on defense, though at our current time we do spend TOO MUCH money on defense. (Though in a post I made a couple of weeks ago, I did show that even though we spend a lot of money on defense  it does provide a large amount of benefit in the sense of diplomacy and leverage against other countries

That's not what would happen in a min wage increase, everything is going to go up in price due to the min wage increasing -- so people aren't going to spend more, they're going to be spending money on food, rent, etc.
