2861  Other / Meta / Re: Enhanced newbie restrictions & requirements on: September 17, 2018, 08:55:21 PM
^^

That won't happen, as Theymos wants newbies to still be able to come here and use the forum. Some come here seeking technical advice/troubleshooting and would need the ability to create a topic.

While I agree Meta is currently a shitshow with everyone creating a topic instead of just posting here, but it should pass in time. I think it was like this for a while when the Merit system rolled out initially, it was mostly people a few activity periods away from ranking up.
2862  Other / Archival / Re: newbie hunting "merit" on: September 17, 2018, 05:44:21 PM
This did not require it's own thread you could have posted this in the official announcement thread. Lock the topic.

This kind of posting behaviour is why you will not receive merit. The "problems" you highlited, already exist there's no stopping that. The good from this will far outweigh the bad.
2863  Other / Meta / Re: Enhanced newbie restrictions & requirements on: September 17, 2018, 04:46:14 PM

I am very sad about this decision. I know I am nobody and have no rights. but there is at least a little policy that can make breathing easier Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry

You have the same rights as everyone else, that includes the right to be better.

Glad to see something has changed, 5 merits probably would have been a better choice for the rank up; but I respect the decision to balance the need for change and not creating to big a barrier for new users starting out.

I must say though that I can't believe how many of these shitposters have already received their 1 needed merit(in this thread alone). I get that everyone is entitled to send merit out as they see fit, but some need to give their head a shake. This is one of the few barriers that can actually do something to prevent the spam from continuing to get worse.

There will already be enough accounts out there merit swapping/trading/buying to get around this restriction. Some people need to realize, not rewarding the whiner looking for 1 merit is good for the forum, and the whiner if they chose to be better.

2864  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: TRIPLE-1, Inc. 株式会社 松島 KAMIKAZE 7nm SHA-256 ASIC on: September 17, 2018, 03:56:52 PM
This triple-1 claims  52 watts. a th
the smaller version should be easy to run in house.

750 watts is easy to power.

So it could command a premium price maybe  900-1000 for the small version

Depending on the pricing that mini would be the new "go to" miner IMO. For home and Data centers. The ~15% gain in efficiency would be worth the doubled physical footprint.

Then on the home miner front, you could comfortably throw 6 of these on each 30 amp circuit(220V), with more than enough wiggle room to keep it safe.

Definitely going to be keeping my eye on these.
2865  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [~220PH] KanoPool kano.is 0.9% fee 4.8 of 10BTC giveaway 🐈 US,UK,JP,NYA,DE,SG on: September 15, 2018, 08:50:09 PM
I hadn't paid attention to that. Did 1fx leave?

Was there any stipulation to the giveaway, that you had to stay for a  certain amount of time?
2866  Other / Meta / Re: sMerit participants – a worrying descending trend (!/?) on: September 15, 2018, 02:31:32 PM
I think to compensate for the lack of s/merit a 1 merit : 1smerit rather than .5 most of the time. In my opinion, this will give more merit sources a bit competitive to the demand of it.

That would still present the problem of rewarding account farmers.  There needs to be the reduction to .5 so that merit swapping can't occur; without it one could farm an account with 1 merit going back and forth.

It would be interesting to see how many sources do not make it through their allotment each month; or what their average distribution is. This might show that it's less about the number of sources and more about finding posts they seem worthy.
2867  Other / Meta / Re: Why was my YuTü.Co.in user account banned for 7 days? on: September 15, 2018, 03:55:43 AM
^^
I'm sorry but Bruno earned his spot in the circle jerk squad, by performing some amazing services to the community.

Wait....

What I mean to say is which circle jerk are you referring to?? Does it have a badge??

Honestly it's percerived that way and nothing more, whether you are referring to moderators and admins; because when it comes to bans they are the only ones with any power albeit at varying degrees.

If so that is hardly a happy handshake club, mods gripe about the admins all the time, some more than others.

If you meant DT, not really relevant here. Regardless there's no big community there either considering you can find DT members carrying neg trust from other DT members.

What you probably find weird here is an account holder who isn't a shitposting drain on the forum inquiring about a ban. Happens from time to time, and Bruno can open a thread here in Meta like anyone else to ask why. Doesn't mean he will get an answer. The answer he's looking for.
2868  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk.org YouTube channel? on: September 14, 2018, 11:09:48 PM
I like this idea.  It feels like it would give the forum the opportunity to once again highlight useful information. The bonus being it wouldn't be drowned out by low quality useless information. ( More so than youtube already is)

- Summarized crypto news, but from a neutral perspective, without any pump-and-dump

Any news that follows this format is a benefit and a plus IMO.

More potential content:
Q &A's with members who are interested.(anonymity optional)
History lesson - collectibles, notable events.

My one question without being a judge in what is or is not a scam attempt. Would this channel be open to bitcoin safe practices, and how to avoid being scammed. This would fall under a newbie welcome of sorts and go beyond the typical "protect your private keys".
2869  Other / Meta / Re: 360 seconds question. on: September 14, 2018, 10:44:52 AM
Awesome now you can use that time to not necrobump a 4 year old thread.  Roll Eyes

In the future check to see when the last post was made.
2870  Other / Meta / Re: Censorship on the Bitcoin talk forum on: September 14, 2018, 10:30:36 AM
I'm guessing you have a source for this? Usually helps if you put the quote in your post.
2871  Economy / Goods / Re: Trezor 1 - Brand New on: September 14, 2018, 02:56:28 AM
You may want to review this topic Guidelines for [WTS], considering it appears you are likely here to use the marketplace. It covers a lot of the things Bill mentioned and a few others.

I would also like to ad a warning regarding buying hardware wallets second hand. I'm not sure what sort of tamper proof packaging could be on the inside of the box to prove it has never been opened. Last year though there were cases of theft involving hardware wallets having previously been compromised before being sold.
2872  Other / Meta / Re: Seriously, theymos ??? on: September 14, 2018, 02:13:28 AM
You're all wrong; simply wasting resources such as clean drinking water and trees for the TP.

I've always preferred using small, slow and preferably fluffy creatures.  Cool
2873  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [PSA] Don't trust the person you just met on the internet. on: September 14, 2018, 01:22:08 AM
-snip-

Thanks for that addition. This is again something I was unaware of. Did a little google searching and realized this is extremely easy for people to create. I'm going to quote you in the second post, as it's great info.

I also would like to add to OP beyond simply verifying links, it's always worth to use for example the NoScript plugin on your browser
Quote
I've never used it, but at a glance it appears you would lose some of the functionality of the forum at the same time. To each there own though, and if it works for you that's good.
you only need to click the (S) icon in top right and add the url to allowed, try visit some other sites and you'll see how often there's 10-20 different sites running some type of script (advertisement, tracking, maybe mining?) stuff. it's a very useful addon and removes a lot of "risky" elements!

Hey there,

Just wanted to take the opportunity to help you with your post formatting. You accidentally deleted the wrong set of "quotes" making my statement look as if you made it, and that you are replying to yourself. It's an easy fix as you can see from my post. Or you can requote it, to leave the name and message tag. Either or. Thanks again for the info and adding to the discussion.
2874  Economy / Securities / Re: LoyceV's Legendary 10 Month 10 Person 10 Altcoin Investment Roller Coaster #2 on: September 14, 2018, 01:09:18 AM
1 month down already, kinda flew by.

Either way we are up, all gains are good gains. Thanks again for putting in the work LoyceV.

Glad it jogged your memory. Always worth taking a second to make sure things are as they appear.

Stop the mouse pointer on the link, you will see a small box at the bottom containing the link "It works in Google Chrome, I do not know about the rest of the browsers.".

Thanks that's something I never really noticed. It comes up on the bottom left like a pop-up.

Seeing it now I remember some of the older browsers having that bar up all the time and it showing there.
2876  Other / Meta / Re: Sincere Appeal for Uplifting the Ban on: September 13, 2018, 08:48:03 AM
if somebody has banned arbitrarily then what will anyone do? everyone deserves the second chance if he is honest, loyal & competent enough to stay here .

That is why you are given the chance to make an appeal thread here and PM the Admins. If it turns out you didn't violate any rules your account would be reinstated.

No everyone is not entitled to a second chance. There are different punishments for different offences. If you earned a permanent ban, then you wasted you one shot, and do not deserve a second chance. Ignorance of the rules of this forum are not a valid excuse to do as you please.

Just move on, if you want to learn only about crypto basics, there are still more sources of knowledge out there.

They are only banned from posting, they still have access to all the knowledge that is here.
2877  Other / Meta / Re: Sincere Appeal for Uplifting the Ban on: September 13, 2018, 06:33:50 AM
It says you are banned from posting or sending personal on this forum.
You have been banned by a forum moderator...

If this is what was in your message, and there was no time frame included, sounds like a permanent ban to me.

I'm sure someone will come here and give you the for sure, but that has been the case every time I hear that's the message.
2878  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Tips] Posting technique on: September 13, 2018, 05:46:50 AM
Bump for visibility.

Some may find this useful on detecting and avoiding malicious links.

2879  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [PSA] Don't trust the person you just met on the internet. on: September 13, 2018, 05:08:03 AM
So just to be clear I showed you 3 2 different ways the hyperlink could be disguised to send you somewhere you did not expect. This can be in fun, or end very badly.

This was done in fun and hopefully you learned something as well. The accounts linked... well sort of, are not guilty of anything and the accusation was made in the spirit of teaching.

Please do not ruin it for others, and if you feel like posting about this, just maybe drop a yes or no if you were "taught"

Here is how the above malicious links look:

Code:
[url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0]this out[/url]
[url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0]www.phishingscamsthroughlinks.edu[/url]

Side not I also discovered you can not use an actual bitcointalk address as the text for the hyperlink, it did not work for me using a thread or profile link.

Added some good additions found from the thread.

Stop the mouse pointer on the link, you will see a small box at the bottom containing the link "It works in Google Chrome, I do not know about the rest of the browsers.".
You should check the link "better to Bookmark it" because there are many people who put fake links "as binace.com or blockchain.io ...etc" to the platforms and then you enter your login info as the official website.
Using two computers may solve many of your problems

In addition to what you and other users suggested, phishers also use "shortened links" in order to hide the destination of each link even further (a lot of newbies fall for such phishing attempts [unfortunately]).
- Solution:
  • Copy the shortened link and paste it on a website that provides you the final/destination link (ex. CheckShortURL).
2880  Other / Beginners & Help / [PSA] Don't trust the person you just met on the internet. on: September 13, 2018, 05:05:19 AM
If you check this out you'll quickly understand why this topic had to be created. Just open it in a new tab and carry on reading.

So sorry about that, but this is the best way I could think of to jump into this. Don't just go clicking on links willy nilly. I gave the example above so that you could see how easy it is to deceive someone on the forum.

So in all seriousness there can be severe consequences to trusting people on the forum. Some users create accounts with the sole purpose of either trying to infect your device, or even just to Phish your information. So here is my advice for avoiding these traps.

Use the "quote" button to inspect the link yourself. When quoting a post it will reveal the code behind the link, and you can be sure of where it is directing you. This still requires your due diligence when trying to navigate links. Just because you know where it is going doesn't mean it's safe. After you have clicked a link check the address bar to ensure you are where you want to be.

I tend to inspect all low rank members links before clicking because in the past I've seen many suspicious links. It doesn't end at the previous example either. This website has a detailed list of ways people are committing these cybercrimes.
