4481  Other / Meta / Re: Have a whole forum for the Satoshi topics on: June 25, 2019, 03:58:04 PM
No, they should just be locked and trashed.

Although, they've been rehashed over, and over again. I still think they were perfectly legitimate questions to begin with, and there was some decent discussion in the older topics. Nowadays these types of threads just invite low quality answers which have been repeated several times over by now. The only thing worth collecting is Satoshi quotes, which I believe we've already got a thread that just does that.
4482  Other / Meta / Re: [UNBAN APPEAL] For Adelaisav on: June 25, 2019, 12:28:07 PM
Send your appeal to the email specified, and play the waiting game until you receive a response. If you don't receive a response after a week or so then you can try, and send it again. If there still isn't any response you can probably assume that the account isn't going to get unbanned.
4483  Other / Meta / Re: Altcoin paywall on: June 25, 2019, 09:45:53 AM
I'm not sure where to open good discussions about alts here on Bitcoin talk. I've also picked up some Basic Attention Token, Steem, and Bit Blocks, and I would like to hear opinions about the future of these coins. Perhaps it would be useful to have child boards for the more established coins, and they could be moderated to remove low value negative posts.
Remember that altcoin discussion is fine in the Serious discussion section, and would likely provide less activity than the altcoin section, but likely better quality. There are a few hundred threads in the altcoin discussion about these topics already that could be found with the search function if you're interested in sifting through them.
4484  Economy / Services / Re: advertising on my deepweb site on: June 25, 2019, 09:42:28 AM
Isn't hacking illegal? Cheesy

There are such thing as ethical hackers as Bob rightly pointed out. Massive companies including the likes of Google hire dedicated employees, and freelances to do this work. In fact, this forum also has a security bounty system in place for those that find any exploits, and report it back ethically without collecting data or hindering the forum in any way.
4485  Other / Meta / Re: [ALTS] What is the procedure for registering alts? on: June 25, 2019, 09:39:16 AM
You've done more than enough to show that you have an alt account. Although, this isn't really expected as many users on this forum have a undeclared alternate account. The majority of them have alt accounts to avoid controversial opinions affecting their services/businesses. Just because you or anyone else has an alt account, doesn't mean it's malicious right from the get go. There's legitimate reasons for a alt account that you don't have to declare if you don't want too. That's a big reason why alt accounts are allowed here I imagine.
4486  Other / Meta / Re: Who else agrees that self moderation of ANN threads shouldn't be possible? on: June 23, 2019, 09:16:20 PM
You always have the power to create a non moderated thread discussing this in the appropriate section. I say discussing, because I'm not suggesting you to create your own announcement thread. Although, if you want to create a alternative discussion thread which is unmoderated about a certain thread then you can do that. I'm sure if you think its suspicious that a thread is self moderated then plenty of others will too, and would appreciate the alternative thread to discuss freely.
4487  Other / Meta / Re: Altcoin paywall on: June 23, 2019, 12:17:48 PM
I'm not trying to be deliberately obstructive here, I just don't think the forum vetting projects is the right way to go. Coins like BCH and BSV could easily pay any fee from their centralized owners, and don't have any of the usual flags of being scams like a fake team, Ponzi structure, etc., and so would likely get their own board, despite being total trash.
This to me would be the biggest concern about this, and the fact that users will assume that these projects have been officially reviewed, and approved by the forum which would definitely cause a few headaches. I think this has been discussed in the past, and I think the logistics of it could be a concern. Generally, I think its a good idea to showcase proper projects that are worthy of that extra exposure, but then again looking at how profitable the altcoin market is from a developers perspective we would likely have several projects wanted these positions, and reviewing them would be both time consuming, and likely a waste of time for a lot of the trash projects that would undoubtedly apply for the spot regardless whether they're paying a premium for it or not.

Generally though, this is a decent suggestion, and with a bit of fine tuning we could get something to work. Although, I'm currently braced for the onslaught of new users heading over to the altcoin section due to Bitcoins recent price surge.
4488  Other / Meta / Re: [Discussion] The introduction and enforcement of [TAGS] on: June 18, 2019, 09:22:11 AM
I've used tags in the past, and think they can be somewhat useful. Although, ideally we would have a section for guides, announcements and the like. Guides are quite popular here on the forum relating to Bitcoin, and the forum. The thing is with tags they would have to be implemented into the forum if we wanted any sort of consistency. A lot of users prefer clean titles without them, and wouldn't use them at all. Also, what happens when there's multiple tags that apply to the thread? It could become messy, and I think a general summary of the thread is absolutely fine.
4489  Other / Meta / Re: Not able to Log in 00DKM@ on: June 18, 2019, 09:18:23 AM
If you absolutely have to use a password manager to store your passwords, I would recommend using something like Keepass which operates offline. You could even run that on a USB or another device if you wanted to make it a little more secure. Still, keepass has its drawbacks.
4490  Economy / Services / Re: I have lost some letter - numbers from my private key!! on: June 16, 2019, 06:10:30 PM
You've only got 43 letters out of 64? Then, that's not going to be possible to brute force, and would likely be a waste of resources for those that try. Not only that, I don't think I'd be in a rush to trust anyone with my private key. Do you have the wallet file, or any other way of getting into the wallet?
4491  Other / Meta / Re: Can mod nuke this guy? on: June 16, 2019, 06:07:27 PM
I believe accounts can be nuked for a variety of reasons, ranging from spam to scam attempts. This applies to newbie accounts
The forum does not moderate scams or scam attempts. Usually, this is a trust system issue, and is dealt with pretty swiftly by the guys on DefaultTrust. Although, you're right that excessive amounts of spam does usually result in a ban of some sort if the user is becoming a problem. In this instance, at first glance the user is definitely posting low quality content, but I'll take a look at it more later. I might just delete the replies I consider spam, and give them a polite message about posting low quality replies.
4492  Economy / Auctions / btclatest.com domain no reserve on: June 16, 2019, 05:15:17 PM
This domain was going to be hosting a complex, and in depth price tracker showing the entire history of Bitcoin with a few unique features thrown in, and although development was partially underway I've decided to discontinue any development towards the website, and combine two of my projects into one. This could be used for a price tracker as originally planned or it could be used for a Bitcoin news website.

4493  Economy / Auctions / btcsignature.com domain for sale on: June 16, 2019, 04:59:11 PM
I bought this domain along with a few others a few months back. Although, I initially had plans to convert this into a website I've probably bitten off more than I can chew recently in terms of my workload. Over the coming few weeks/months I'll be looking to offload some of my projects which aren't currently in full swing development.

If you're interested in getting a list of all the domains I own relating to Bitcoin, please send a message, and I'll get back to you. All varying in price ranges.

4494  Other / Meta / Re: The bitcoin wiki board could do with some attention on: June 10, 2019, 11:13:37 PM
Sounds like we need to create a wiki for the wiki section. In all seriousness though, the section has proved useful in a few situations. Such as malicious editing. Although, the same could be achieved privately, I like the fact that its open to the public to see. Admittedly I haven't browsed that section in few months.
4495  Other / Meta / Re: How to start giveaways on: May 20, 2019, 10:10:18 PM
Almost every single case of someone posting their referal link is against the rules, however there are a few situations which it is allowed. However, I'd recommend following what most users do around here, and add it to their signature. Posting it on a thread or reply will likely result in it getting deleted pretty quickly.
4496  Other / Meta / Re: Ideas and plans of theymos for the forum improvements on: April 30, 2019, 07:58:59 PM
The reason behind potential abusements on report badges is: If there is financial benefits with those badges, people might abuse it. They can create 100 account to spam, then use their main one to report all fake spams. In the second scenario, even real users might become report hunters, and might make their low quality reports. Some time people read fast, and don't care about general aspect of the forum.
I'm pretty sure that there are no plans for monetizing reports officially, and especially not with report badges. Yes, users could create unlimited accounts to generate fake reports, and contribute to the spam problem, but I very much doubt they would be willing to do that for just a reporting badge, especially when they could hop along into Bitcoin Discussion or the altcoin section, and report a mass amount of posts within a couple of minutes.

Generally, those that do report have very high percentages, and from my personal experience I haven't noticed too many users abusing the report function to benefit. Reporting badges are a good idea in my opinion because they encourage those that are already reporting to make more reports, but also rewards them without monetizing it.
4497  Economy / Digital goods / Re: Exchange with 30k members up for auction!!! on: April 30, 2019, 07:47:15 PM
Hahaha. I already spent more than 2k on this and 500 $ on promotions
I'm hoping that isn't the case with the information provided, because if it is then you've made a bad investment. The information is complete, and the only thing you're selling is 30k members. However, are these active members that are regularly using the exchange? If you want anything in return for this exchange you need to start presenting facts and figures to back up the sale.
4498  Other / Meta / Re: Is it possible? on: April 30, 2019, 06:49:20 PM
I doubt preexisting local sections will be removed from the forum, because they were created for a reason. Demand. If there was once a demand its very likely that there will always be demand. Especially, considering when Bitcoin is adopted in local cultures more, and hits the big numbers again. I think theymos is aware that these local sections have their own little sub communities within the forum now, and taking them away doesn't have any benefits to the forum, and would only negatively affect those that participate in said local sections.

I'm not sure if anyone has tried this, but campaigning in your local area to get Bitcoin users to communicate via these local sections could be a good idea. There are several meetups near me, and its surprising that many of them don't participate or even heard of the forum.
4499  Other / Meta / Re: [Competition] Report spammers and pseudo-goodposters on: April 28, 2019, 07:11:53 PM
BTW do You, as staff member, have access to others "report to moderator" stats? Or only Theymos has it?
We have access to most recent reports, but not total amount of reports handled by x user. So the only person who would be able to verify the data would indeed be theymos or presumably cyrus. Plus, I doubt any staff member would release any data without permission from theymos anyway.

Another fact is what o_e_l_e_o said, spammers could easily change the report stats with just using a inspect element page and receive their merits. Or it could happen such that, they would report almost everything in Bounties (Altcoins) section. That place is just absolute trash and we can easily get around 20-30 reports added to your count daily. None of the staffs is really available here to confirm these numbers other than theymos himself and probably we are never seeing these report stats quite often. Whenever theymos thinks of providing us with the stats, he posts them. Other than that depending on him for stats is just like wasting our own time.
You could easily hit 5000 reports a day if you were dedicated to the course in the altcoin section, and many users are reporting hundreds a day. I've woken up to reports in the thousands some days, and a lot of them are coming from the altcoin section. The place is absolutely incredible, and unfortunately good discussion does get lost there.

If anyone does come up with an idea which would encourage others to report more without the drawbacks discussed then I can absolutely get behind the idea.
4500  Other / Meta / Re: [Competition] Report spammers and pseudo-goodposters on: April 28, 2019, 08:44:39 AM
The above image is just one of my latest bad reporting. As I have said on my previous reply I know moderators don't have the time to read all the previous post, but, if there will be some ratings on the quality reporters I would have the lowest ratings just because I forgot or never link which post I was saying as rehash post.

I also have one report which got a bad report, AFAIK the post was just  Smiley (yup, just a smiley and got bad on that), when I check again it was already deleted. I know moderators can see this link, if I'm correct it is just a smiley >>> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5134505.msg50705307#msg50705307

My bad reports are around 0.81% of my total reported posts. I hope it won't affect my quality of reporting, I know we all make mistakes or moderators click the wrong button and I admit I make mistakes.

It really depends on if you care about report percentage, and actually removing the message. I'm only speaking of my viewpoint on this, and how I go about moderating. I'll try my best to go through the pages, and check if there's duplicate content, but if I believe that the post is unique enough or adds just enough to discussion then I'll likely leave it. Sometimes I'll ignore the report, and possibly allow another moderator to make the decision if I think its borderline.

My point being without going off topic too much here is that if you report with references its much better, although its not a requirement, and most of the time its not needed. Regular reporters, and moderators can kind of spot duplicate content from a mile off due to the fact that we get reports, and report within the same threads quite a lot.

If its a smiley then yeah it should have been deleted, and I'm not sure why it wasn't marked good, but it was probably just a mistake on the mods behalf.  0.81% is a really good margin for error, I wouldn't be bothered by making too many mistakes guys, and as long as you have a good amount of good reports then there's no real need to change from a personal perspective. Back in my reporting days I made over 200 bad reports.

My personal advice would be to go more in depth on non obvious cases. However, simply stating "spam" etc is usually fine for the majority of low quality content.

I fully agree with your post especially with the part in bold. If a reward system like that got implemented I think that not everyone should be able to participate in it. It should be based on the stats of good reports, both quality and quantity wise. That way you would be dealing with a handful of members who already know what an off topic and spam post looks like. That minimises the possibility of abuse and gaming the system.
But, people get greedy, and will game the system by creating alt accounts, and posting spam, and reporting it with their mains. Then, the original goal of the campaign of removing spam is void, and we are left dealing with more spam than original. It's a hard one, but the very core of the idea is a good one.
