2021  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Which Pools offer Security Locks for Wallet/Email etc ? on: January 03, 2012, 08:22:49 PM
My pool offers email confirmations + users cannot change registered email. However I don't see any benefits in locking payout wallets, it's more like security thru obscurity for me.

Do you have a 'No Transfer for, or 24hrs Wallet Lockdown, after Wallet Change' policy in place ?

In the confirmation email that is sent (triggered during a wallet change), does the wallet get locked until the email confirmation is processed ? could you explain how it works please ? thanks....

Sorry, it's been a while since I have mined at your pool and I am sure things may have changed.
2022  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Which Pools offer Security Locks for Wallet/Email etc ? on: January 03, 2012, 08:15:34 PM
Locking of addresses have many side effects. As an example, I already solved many issues when people lost their wallet. Now imagine that their wallet will be locked to this lost wallet, with significant amount of the pool balance. Should I send bitcoins to black hole even when user ask me in advance (before automatic payout triggered)? Or should I break the rule and change wallet to new one?

Actually I really think that the probability of hacking/hijacking pool account AND hacking also mailbox AND NOT hacking the receiving computer is negliable. Because when user's computer is compromited (so attacker can have easy access to mailbox and pool account), wallet locking isn't any problem for the attacker anymore, because he can steal coins directly from the computer, after the payout.
If I loose my wallet, I can disable auto payout. To ask for Admin help, that does not constitute as BREAKING RULES, because obviously the ONLY one that can change credentials of any kind, would be the Admin.

Also, we are not talking about individual computer user's security - WE ARE TALKING POOL SECURITY, so an excuse to help one aspect of security (in this case user PC security), means nothing to me in this thread, as it is completely off topic. There will always be problems, Pool security, as most see it, is a bonus.

Please stay on topic.
2023  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Which Pools offer Security Locks for Wallet/Email etc ? on: January 03, 2012, 08:03:33 PM
Deepbit offers optional permanent bitcoin address lock.
E-mail address can't be changed too.
thanks, I will add it to the list.

However I don't see any benefits in locking payout wallets, it's more like security thru obscurity for me.
Well, opinions vary I guess. When my wallet ID is locked and auto-pay is set....the actual security of my mining account and the BTC that sits in that account in between payouts becomes less of a concern for me.
I think wallet locking is a great feature and others (who had accounts hijacked) would definitely agree with me.

My current BTCguild account as an example....can pretty much be accessed by whomever wants to access it, because once they are in there, the only thing they can do is SEND ME BTC or NMC, as they can't send it elsewhere, they can't disrupt my miners, as even deleted or removed miners can still receive work and payouts.

Other than creating a new miner and helping add to my BTC totals, they can't do anything else. I feel pretty happy about that.

No confirmations, no possibilities, nothing. You are welcome to my credentials, as they will not do you any good, other than being able to see what I am doing in that account.
2024  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Namecoin - what is going on ? on: January 03, 2012, 07:40:16 PM
It seems that the 'latest' biggest news in the Namecoin project has been the implementation of Merged Mining and it's free ride on the Bitcoin Mining Network.

Has the project stalled ? The Wiki seems to be a complete mess, with missing pages (stating vandalism as the cause) and nothing seems to be happening that is capturing any decent press.

Another thing that really bothers me is the fact that Users are able to register dot-bit domains using BTC. WTF ?
This essentially makes NMC even more useless and worthless than ever. THIS NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP.

The 'currency' is old enough and plentiful enough to be able to stand on it's own 2 legs, without the need for BTC to come to the rescue and accomplish what NMC was supposed to be used for in the first place - Domain Registrations.

If BTC is always seen as an immediate substitute for NMC, then what are we doing mining Namecoins ? We might as well be Merged-Mining I0C or ICX, as they both seem to be just as useless at this point and NMC is headed to be about as worthless in terms of it's BTC trading rate as well.

Namecoin needs a kick in the pants and needs to be weaned from the teat of Bitcoin once and for all.

BTC should NOT be an alternative to NMC for the purchase of services intended to be under the NMC flag and if allowed to continue, will render NMC (as a currency) a complete and total failure.

YMMV.
2025  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Request for an Scrypt capable fork of cgminer - maybe within new CGMiner / RPC on: January 03, 2012, 07:30:42 PM
Maybe Pooler can fork the CGMiner-CPU-only code and implement his minerd code into it ?
2026  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5x 5830's possible? on: January 03, 2012, 07:26:43 PM
I currently run 5x Sapphire 5830 Extreme on a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R/Xeon E5506 under Windows 7 x64, without any problems, although I run 2 smaller 80plus PSUs that total nearly 1300W (Corsair 850w for motherboard + 3 cards + Corsair 430w for 2 remaining cards, both 80plus).

The 1,000W power supply should be enough (at stock voltages), as I have another machine that runs 4 of these cards using an 850W 80plus Corsair without any problems and a small overclock (930mhz CPU/300Mhz Mem at stock voltages)....bit if you are going to overclock with voltage increases, you might want to get a 1200W for the 5 card machine.

Hope that helps.
2027  Bitcoin / Pools / General Security - ie. Which Pools offer Security Locks for Wallet/Email etc ? on: January 03, 2012, 07:11:23 PM
Without signing up to each and every pool to see for myself, I figured I would simply ask here.....

Which Pools offer Security Locks for Wallet/Email etc ?

To clarify (in case it's not obvious enough), which pools allow users to permanently LOCK their Wallet IDs into their control panels or any other enhanced security features that might help new miners find a pool that they feel comfortable with?

Basic Pool Security Features:
- BTCGuild (wallet lock + email locks)
- Deepbit (wallet lock + email locks)
- Slush (wallet change email confirmation + email lock)
- ?
2028  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Request for an Scrypt capable fork of cgminer - maybe within new CGMiner / RPC on: January 03, 2012, 07:04:19 PM
With Pooler's minerd being such a killer app for Intel CPUs, do you really think that CGMiner could compete without ALOT of optimizations ?

Why not Bounty-Request Pooler to add enhancements to his minerd for LTC mining ?
2029  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER miner overclock monitor fanspeed RPC in C linux/windows/osx 2.1.1 on: January 03, 2012, 07:01:49 PM
I don't want to play Devil's Advocate, as I understand many people seem to be having issues with the latest release (2.1.1), but for me, my performance for Pool mining has actually increased.
The MH/s stats at my pool have never been higher than they are over the last 24 hours or so and my Share/minute rates are up a tiny bit.

What would have changed to allow this to happen ? ....as nothing has changed on my end.
The miner seems to be connecting to the pool more efficiently, as it were.
(Win 7 x64, all cards, Cat 11.9-11.10)

Any ideas ?
2030  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: GUI mining - updated Aug 24 with new miner versions on: December 30, 2011, 03:01:02 AM
I'm still using GUIminer, would I get better hashes if I abandoned it, too?
Of course...and I hear that Chicks really dig CGMiner.....and the guys that use it Wink

Hey guys, anyone familiar with the film "The Skeleton Key" with Kate Hudson and Peter Sarsgaard ?
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0397101/

Remember how in the film, Voodoo could only harm someone, if he/she actually believed in it ?

Do you think that the same principal might also apply to Karma and the belief in, or lack of belief in....Buddhism ?

I think that the lesson that they tried to teach in that particular cinematic feature was, If you don't believe in it, it simply can't hurt you Wink

Unfortunately though, if you are a Buddhist, you might be in trouble....lol
2032  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: CGMINER miner overclock monitor fanspeed RPC in C linux/windows/osx 2.1.0 on: December 29, 2011, 09:27:49 PM
Q: GUI version?
A: No. The RPC interface makes it possible for someone else to write one though.
GOD, please NO....NO GUI.

Considering I am (for the most part) Window's brainwashed and anti-cmd-line (read: LAZY), I couldn't imagine using CGMiner any other way.

I am a Win7 x64 Miner and use BAT files to launch CGMiner on all of my rigs.
I found it actually took LESS TIME to configure and maintain a decent BAT file for CGMiner control than it took to configure GUIminer, with it's GUI none the less.

With the available Flags, anything is possible and creating 1 BAT file, then copying over to like-machines is a snap.

Web Monitoring/RPC Interface...GREAT. Main CGMiner GUI ? P L E A S E  N O !

I don't even bother using the new Config file, as I use the BAT files to also set CPU affinity to a single core (as my band-aid for the Windows 100% CPU bug).

Switching settings for me is as simple as commenting IN & OUT of a line in the BAT file, depending on what I want CGMiner to do for me, at a given time/room temp etc.

It's safe to say that, I love CGMiner....LOL
2033  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1237 GH] BTC Guild - Pure PPS Merged Mining, LP, SSL, Instant Payout on: December 29, 2011, 09:04:32 PM
Fair enough, I must have misunderstood. Thanks for clearing that up.
The pool still rocks, as always, and performs better than any other pool I have ever mined at.
Thanks for making it available for us.
2034  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How many peers to connect to on: December 29, 2011, 08:32:51 PM
It looks like the official client by default connects to up to 125 peers.
I am by no means a coder and barely understand Bitcoin to begin with, but isn't the 125 limit you are referring to, the RPC connection limit ? ...like, mining & info requests and not necessarily network nodes/peers etc ?

Forgive me for sounding so stupid......but it is something that I looked into and for solo mining with multiple machines pointed at the same local network wallet, I actually increased the connection limit as well as included the RPC timeout value to my bitcoin.conf file.

Perhaps it made no change for performance (for me) but I have generated coins solo mining and do not get the 'Pool 0 not providing work fast enough' message in my miners anymore, so I assumed that whatever I did, HELPED. I just assumed I created myself more available RPC connections as well as a timeout to keep me from running out of sockets on my Windows server that runs Bitcoind for all my local miners, hence the message about not providing work fast enough, now gone.
2035  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [1237 GH] BTC Guild - Pure PPS Merged Mining, LP, SSL, Instant Payout on: December 29, 2011, 07:59:08 PM
Now it seems that since the Hall of Fame was brought up a few posts ago, it has simply stopped counting stats all together.....

You had also mentioned when first switching over to PPS, that you would evaluate the Fee and possibly drop it back to No-Fee if things worked out.

Does that offer for re-evaluation still stand ? The pool seems to be doing well, although only you know for sure, as the stats seem frozen in time.

Pool seems to be dead.....any news on it ?

Is there another support channel that I am not aware of ? because this has been down for quite some time now with no info anywhere.

Is SolidCoin still ready for the Bitcoin collapse ?
Just wondering.....

Now, according to the Solidcoin Bounty page, this post qualifies to get me a 20 SC bounty payment (the Bitcoin collapse link).

Hall of Fame is BTC only.
I was really hoping it wasn't...lol...as that either makes me the luckiest or dumbest miner out there, having found 5 blocks for the pool since the switchover, while taking out less than 2 blocks worth in payouts...LOL

I would have felt much better if that included NMC blocks...hehe
