1821  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk history of MtGox and how a Bitcointalk post caught the MtGox hacker. on: June 25, 2018, 07:41:52 AM
Mt.Gox is one of the biggest disasters in Bitcoin history and the story is not yet complete.
Based on the available evidence, it appears that Gox lost a fairly modest amount of money (in terms of USD) in 2011 that compromises a decent bulk of the missing money. They were subsequently hacked a number of times that have been publicly reported, during which they likely lost some amount of money.

I am not entirely sure why the losses compounded over time, maybe Gox was not a profitable operation, and they took customer money to fund the losses.

Security did not seem to be a strength of Gox's. If they had been honest about the loss in 2011, it would likely have been not a very big deal, but Gox would have closed and some other exchange would have taken the spot of having the majority of trading volume.

That graph by WizzSec explains the losses quite well.

It appears that some hacks were discovered but others were not.
From accounts by former staff it doesn't appear that regular audits were done to ensure that the exchange ledger balance matched the total wallet balances.

If you don't trust then just ignore him, instead of showing that warning sign in profile.

You are making that the whole community shouldn't trust him.

Exactly!

That's not the type of person that I am.  :/

For example, if I see someone trying to scam an elderly person, I will intervene.  You would just continue walking I guess...
you mean he is trying to scam some other people?

Are you really trying to defend someone who was listed on the Rokso list on Spamhaus ? That is an achievement that only the most notorious spammers manage to do.

1826  Other / Meta / Re: The Bitcointalk 10 BTC Donators - where are they now ? on: June 25, 2018, 04:17:04 AM
I could have saved you time & effort by telling you that most of them are rich AF & enjoying their lives hanging out the back of high class hookers & burying their faces in piles of high quality blow.

From the early posts that I've read I think it is more likely that they have their heads buried deep into code rather than hookers and getting their highs from high quality innovation.
1827  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk history of MtGox and how a Bitcointalk post caught the MtGox hacker. on: June 25, 2018, 02:15:27 AM
Well is 40,000 bitcoin enough to suppress an entire global market, if theres 17 million bitcoins available I dont think thats significant enough by itself.   Perhaps only bitcoin float on exchanges is relevant in comparison for that figure and introducing 40,000 new coins previously considered 'gone' is the effect.    I dont think we can say it helps or is the majority of the reason for a trend.

Thats a big deal and McCaleb is not sharing any responsibility apparently.  Is that legally correct because the sale was final I dont know

remained a minority owner in the company until its collapse in 2014
not final then

Good summary only thing is the price on each date is relevant and should probably be stated, explaining why previous losses can be repaid in full now

Thank you for your comments. I will work on adding more prices (I've started adding some already) and have found a good post byshadyrifles and some others that explains why the losses can now be repaid . I've tried to list the threads that provide detailed information rather than duplicating it. Some of the original threads that I've linked to show the frustration and opinions of the victims of MtGox.
1828  Economy / Speculation / Re: MtGox Trustee Halts Bitcoin Sell-Offs on: June 25, 2018, 02:07:12 AM

Im absolutely agree. I cant understand why this bastard not seat in prison?? He stolen money and now was selling BTC and dumping price and even earned billions. They stolen money in BTC and must return in BTC as well, not in fiat by 2014y rate.

The trustee is following Japanese law. Under Japanese bankruptcy law the amount owed to creditors is the value at the time. Regardless of whether it goes up or down.

I don't know all the ins and outs of the legal processes there but this:

March 03, 2014, Today filed a motion for civil rehabilitation proceedings for Mt Gox
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=498120.0

and this:

https://www.mtgoxlegal.com/

Probably have a lot to do with the decision to enter into civil rehabilitation proceedings by the trustee.

It is quite a difficult situation since nobody will ever be completely happy with the outcome and there are defined legal processes to be followed. People lost of lot of bitcoins and unless they can all be returned - with interest. People will feel ripped off.

OP - I've added this thread to: Bitcointalk history of MtGox and how a Bitcointalk post caught the MtGox hacker.
1829  Other / Meta / Re: The most iconic bitcointalk threads. History on Bitcointalk. on: June 25, 2018, 01:23:06 AM

A few hints for the OP:
The forum was also reachable under forum.bitcoin.org for some time before it moved to bitcointalk.org IIRC.
The "name" of the forum is actually "Bitcoin Forum", not "Bitcointalk" (see upper left corner of this page).

Also, it might be noteworthy that for some time, DDOSing this forum coincided with dumps on then dominant Bitcoin exchange MtGox. I.e., you could DDOS this forum, which in turn made the price of Bitcoin drop. Market manipulation wild Wild West Cool

I've edited the OP to include some of your comments and used part of your post as a quote on the Bitcointalk history of hacks and vandalism and Bitcointalk history of MtGox and how a Bitcointalk post caught the MtGox hacker. threads. It is great to have this type of input from people that were actually there when some of this history was being made.
1830  Other / Meta / Re: Done with this forum on: June 24, 2018, 03:11:34 PM

It's true, I do really care about this forum. That's why busting Merit abusers became my hobby lately, I just didn't continue busting abusers due to a little busyness, but would like to continue it. I will not spend my time investigating these Members if I don't want to help Bitcointalk improve. I'm just doing my part as a Member, this forum helps me lot that's and in exchange of that, I help this forum as well.

I have no issues with people that want to earn $ in Crypto by contributing positively. Members from other countries - especially poorer countries sometimes contribute in phenomenal ways towards Crypto and it can be a method to get out of poverty.

It also has helped get people closer and understand each other better. I've made friends from all over the world through Crypto.
1831  Other / Meta / Re: Who hosts Bitcoin Talk? on: June 24, 2018, 02:45:51 PM

Founded by Satoshi Nakamoto. The domain name was owned by Sirius but is now controlled by Cøbra. The forum is administrated by theymos .

Bitcointalk history of hacks and vandalism.

1832  Other / Meta / Re: The Bitcointalk 10 BTC Donators - where are they now ? on: June 24, 2018, 02:39:29 PM
I'm still here.  Running NastyMining, donating funds regularly to NastyFans, helping keep traders safe with escrows, honestly distributing merit, securing treasury funds, creating unique physical coins, offering other silver coins, and more interesting products while also trying to actively help resolve problems and call out troublemakers on the forum to make this a better place for everyone to participate in the Bitcoin community.

It is an honor seeing some of the legends - donators commenting on here.
1833  Economy / Exchanges / Re: yobit.net is a scam ? on: June 24, 2018, 02:30:27 PM
It is reasonably well known that Yobit has issues - using them is not without risk.

Support can range from slow to non existent.

The identities of the organisation and identities running it are not known. (Possibly for security and legal reasons.)

Some of the coins listed on there are from dead networks or on the wrong chain after a fork.

Coins like Waves have in the past accused them of selling coins that they don't have.

There are many people that have lost their crypto and have not received it back.

However -

They are located in a country (Russia) that does not really support crypto or exchanges within their legal framework.

Many people successfully have used and continue using their exchange without issue.

In some cases Yobit has assisted foreign law enforcement where there have been thefts.

1834  Economy / Exchanges / Re: WEX.nz on: June 24, 2018, 02:17:05 PM
I would like to express my highest appreciation for the team behind btc-e and wex. USA stole a lot of their money and seized their website/servers. USA tried to arrest the owners and was ready to put them in jail for 55 years (or more), thankfully USA failed. A few months back WEX recovered 100% of my lost funds and I withdrew them successfully (this was namecoin). Yes, I didn't lose anything. WEX deserves mad support from the crypto community in my opinion. They are the pirate bay of exchanges and the real heroes in crypto.

I realize some people have issues with btc-e. I am only giving this opinion from my own personal experience, which has been nothing but outstanding so far.

If the accusations against them are true then they still have plenty of stolen BTC to launder. By using them you are helping them in laundering those stolen funds.
1835  Economy / Exchanges / Re: How to avoid getting your exchange account HaCkEd or pHiShEd on: June 24, 2018, 02:00:09 PM
I wouldn't click on any google ads, ever. Even if the link in the ad seems perfectly legit and not a phishing site, you're just a lot safer if you just avoid clicking on them altogether.

Also, I'd be very careful of registering with the email (and password, which goes without saying) that you use on exchanges on shady sites. Use a throwaway email instead. Not only will you get spam, you may get attempts at logging into your exchange accounts that may or may not succeed, if the owner of that shady site decides to do malicious things with it.

Vitalik "Not giving away ETH" Buterin

Similar thing happened with the Binance founder, CZ. All of his posts and Binance updates were flooded with comments that suggested they were holding a giveaway or whatnot, which forced him to essentially change his twitter name to indicate that he's not giving away coins.

The main reason for posting this is to ensure that people who are new to Crypto don't lose their Crypto to phishing scams.

I have close ties to a number of exchanges (both centralized and DEXs). I have seen a lot of users get phished. Phishing is a multi-million dollar criminal enterprise that give crypto a bad name.

2) Penalize bounty campaigns and ICO's that use bumping by shit-posting by displaying their thread permanently on page 10 or a special penalty page which reduces the size of their images and fonts.
That sounds an interesting proposal LOL however, isn't it gonna create extra loads for the mods/admins? They are already overloaded with tasks I am sure. We need a solution which can reduce the loads they have on them now.

Maybe trusted users can "report" the thread and x number of reports from reliable users get the thread locked for a period of time. (automatic time lock).

Even a bot could be used to do some of that automatically. On a forum I was a moderator on they used a bot to get rid of spam.

1) Allow forum moderators to penalize users by revoking signature display rights for a month for poor posting habits.

That is something I suggested some time ago,

That just proves it is a good idea and you thought about it first.  Grin

1) Allow forum moderators to penalize users by revoking signature display rights for a month for poor posting habits.

I saw a lot of thread asking about this kind of proposal here in the forum but I think it needs more MODs to that task.
I agreed as what mdayonliner says they are loading of doing a task as of now.
I felt guilty about this because I know I'm not a good poster. Grin Grin

Perhaps a bot can be used to detect common poor quality posts.
There are some clever people on this forum that have created some amazing analytics which could be used for feeding data to a bot.

1) Allow forum moderators to penalize users by revoking signature display rights for a month for poor posting habits.

That is something I suggested some time ago,

It seems a good idea to me but if that was implemented we would soon see hundreds of posts on meta like: Why has my signature disappeared? And the like. Posts complaining about the merit system would be nothing compared to that.

On a forum I used to clear of spam they had a rule. Any complaints about temporary bans resulted in a permaban. The signature could be replaced with a notice like "this user has received a signature ban for 7 /14/ 30 days for posting spam".

An automatic timer could lift the ban.

1) Allow forum moderators to penalize users by revoking signature display rights for a month for poor posting habits.
A little bit similar with this one for signature campaign, but its ban.
Campaign Participants:

Staff do not want to hand out bans for unconstructive posts but if we feel that you as a user are continually making very poor or unsubstantial posts due to your paid signature the following bans will be issued:

First offence: 7 days
Second offence: 14 days
Third offence: 30 days
Fourth: Permanent ban

2) Penalize bounty campaigns and ICO's that use bumping by shit-posting by displaying their thread permanently on page 10 or a special penalty page which reduces the size of their images and fonts.
How about locking their thread for someday (ex. first warn is 3 days)? But moderators will have extra works for this one.

3) Provide preferential listing on page 1 for ICO's and Bounty campaigns that pay to be listed there. Rather than paying an army of shills they could be paying bitcointalk to be listed on the first (featured) page.
Looks good, but how about scam ICO that pay for to be on featured page? It will bring a negative side for bitcointalk, except it need some extra research for it.

I like those ideas. Especially the one about locking the thread. It could be a timed lock so the moderator doesn't have to manually unlock it.

It can be made clear that the ICO's are not endorsed by Bitcointalk and that they pay to be featured on the front page. - just like with TV and newspaper advertising.

Perhaps there can be a reward program in place for campaigns that discourage spam and low quality posts.
1839  Other / Meta / Strategies to prevent shit-posting on: June 24, 2018, 09:30:40 AM
I've been thinking about how the quality can be improved in addition to the merit system.

1) Allow forum moderators to penalize users by revoking signature display rights for a month for poor posting habits.

2) Penalize bounty campaigns and ICO's that use bumping by shit-posting by displaying their thread permanently on page 10 or a special penalty page which reduces the size of their images and fonts.

1840  Other / Meta / Re: Done with this forum on: June 24, 2018, 09:15:59 AM

Sir, Do you think that my posts are spams? Or they are just fine enough to be called "constructive"? I just really want to know. Because I'm risking my reputation here saying over and over that my posts are not spams. But, I really don't know if you guys accepts my posts and consider it as constructive.

By the way, you're right about what you've said. Also almost 90% of people here really just registered to earn money as their priority, not even worrying about the quality of posts. But I can assure you that I'm different from those people. I earn money by posting Good post as long as I can make it good.

Your posts are probably in the top 5% of the posts on this forum. I had a quick look at them and most are fine.
By the look of your merit history you would be on track to rank up with merit around the same time as your activity would allow you to rank up.
