1721  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: Let the Patent Arms Race begin on: July 06, 2018, 02:22:27 AM
That is where the Electronic frontier foundation has such an important  role.

The United States especially is pressing for tighter copyright and patent laws (as seen in the TPPA negotiations).

Patents are a scrounge on society. Creative Commons will create a much fairer society where it isn't a matter of who thought of it first and patented it first.

It will allow technological innovation and affordable life saving drugs.  There will be benefits for companies to collaborate and pool their skills.

May the best product win !

1724  Other / Meta / Re: Getting bitcointalk.org pages whitelisted on Wikipedia on: July 05, 2018, 11:17:46 AM
Bitcointalk.org has been on the Wikipedia blacklist for a long time apparently due to altcoin related spam some years ago. We asked the wise Wikipedia mods for a single page exception which they've granted. The Satoshi quote in this page is now properly referenced:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Larimer#Interactions_with_Satoshi_Nakamoto

Here is the approved whitelisting request:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki_talk:Spam-whitelist#bitcointalk.org

I'm not sure if there is much purpose in getting it whitelisted.

Bitcointalk content is easily available on google. Some articles on bitcointalk are better than those on wikipedia. Perhaps more effort needs to be made in indexing those good articles on here and making them more visible. (Which the merit system currently does).

An alternative reference for the quote could have been: https://satoshi.nakamotoinstitute.org/posts/bitcointalk/287/

Forum posts used as reference are easy to be abused. Anyone can post something, content is largely unmoderated and the content can be edited afterwards.

You could also archive the content and use the archive as a reference.

What about france1.com

French.com ?
français.com ?

and all the .net .org etc versions.

Frenchfries.com ? They are not even French but Belgian.

Here I see an an apology which I believe and accept. I don't think that Sanjay finds such behavior acceptable.

I see you don't mention your sidekick's threats to bounty members here leave or get red trust that is extortion but to be expected from people like you and yours

We were just talking about your racist comments for which he apologized and then you spoil it with that comment.
I'm confused about this:

"but to be expected from people like you and yours"

What people is that ?

All: I know lots has been exchanged which was avoidable. Can we please put an end to this and focus on the product. Product will be of help to the society and not these exchanges.
Hi,

What are you suing me for ?  What have I said that is untrue ? Are you going to sue others that ask questions or express their opinion too ?
Does that mean I will get to test some of the representations and claims made here under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010 (Cth) ?
Will you be suing future customers that leave a negative review too ?

"but to be expected from people like you and yours" in such context is considered a racial slur in Australia.

We have the thread open. I am here to answer any valid question that anyone may have.

Considering I have said nothing racist at any stage do you think it is acceptable to call me and others a racist because I am from a different country and may have a different skin color ? Do you think that is acceptable behavior from your company representative ? What is that opinion of that ? Does that comply with Australian anti-discrimination law ?  I don't care what nationality or color a person is - why would I ?  But in public and private statements made by your company - Mefy Pty Ltd seems me to be quite biased about it. I'm offended and I'm sure others are too. Do you recognize the problem ?

Will I get a public apology and admission of racism towards me by the representative of your Australian company - Mefy Pty Ltd?

Will Mefy Pty LTd issue such an admission of racial bias and public apology ? (Vicarious liability)

I'm more for Hal Finney.
Isn't it a too big coincidence to Hal Finney lived in the same neighborhood as Dorian Satoshi Nakamoto?
He was the fist to receive a bitcoin transaction?
I know all the emails in between debugging crash logs etc, but isn't that the way to hide himself away?
Seems like we will never know.

I like Hal Finney. But he doesn't have to be Satoshi to be one of my bitcoin heros. He did enough as Hal to already deserve that title.
For those that don't know who Hal Finney is read this: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=155054.0

In 1991, Hal began doing volunteer work for a new project known as or P.G.P. (Pretty Good Privacy) and was one of the central players in developing the program.
Hal wrote in 1992 that "cryptographic technology appealed to him because he worried about the ability of corporations and governments to snoop on citizens."
"Hal was motivated by the highest ideals of human rights," stated Phil Zimmermann

Hals style and character match. I believe Satoshi to be a brilliant human being like that.

There is also this:

Nick posted again today, (praising ethereum once again;) and I was reading and I noticed his use of the term "block chain" instead of "blockchain"

Satoshi never said blockchain. He calls the ledger block chain.  Shocked

2 years ago I decided to scan Satoshi's forum posts here just to see if there was anything anomalous about his writing style.  Anything that stood out to me.  The first thing I noticed was that he constantly hyphenates things.  He never misses a properly hyphenated phrase.  He *always* hyphenates things.  Word phrases 99% of people have no idea should be hyphenated, he hyphenates.  In fact I almost wondered if he was over-hyphenating.  Doing it randomly sometimes.  In any case .... take a look at Szabos writings .... cough ...

1732  Other / Ivory Tower / Re: If you belong in the "Ivory Tower" how do you communicate with everyone else? on: July 04, 2018, 01:20:49 AM

Question: How do I learn to communicate with "normal people" when things are so obvious to me, but almost no one else understands?

Any fool can make something complicated. It takes a genius to make it simple. - Woody Guthrie

There is a risk that if you understand things that other people don't that you will be hailed as a genius.
It doesn't mean that you necessarily are a genius. It just means that others don't understand it.
It is not in human nature to think of yourself as a fool unless you have the critical ability to recognize it.

Gardner proposed eight abilities considered as intelligence:

musical-rhythmic,
visual-spatial,
verbal-linguistic,
logical-mathematical,
bodily-kinesthetic,
interpersonal,
intrapersonal, and
naturalistic. (added slightly later - initially he proposed 7)

He later suggested that existential and moral intelligences may also be worthy of inclusion

Someone who has strong academic abilities may perform well in the  visual-spatial, verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical intelligence categories but poorly in the
interpersonal and intrapersonal categories if they are having difficulty communicating and relating to others.

Someone lacking such skills would also find it difficult to understand how they are lacking those skills.

It is hard to recognize other peoples interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligence if you lack it yourself. Just like they have difficulty replicating your academic successes.

It is also worthwhile exploring where you are on the Autistic spectrum. (Everyone is on the spectrum - that is why it is considered a spectrum)

Announcing the first excerpt to a literary work consisting of two parts. The excerpt is provided. I wanted to include it as a brief glimpse of history. Even for those that can't read the full book, I wanted to make this available to everyone. A short story if you will, with some of the most brought up questions and answers. I wanted the people and the facts to be known. Or as much of it. I'm still saving most for the books, the best parts hopefully. It's currently just a possibility for now. In the meantime the excerpt is included.

Links with information about the book (if it comes to frution) will be posted here on this site in the coming month.
Names to both are in this puzzle to solve, for those who want spoilers head down to the excerpt: cryptopuzzle

- Convert letters to numbers
- Numbers like 1 represent the letter B, it is in mixed order
- Title of book broken into two parts is revealed at the end

The two part series is still alpha and experimental. There's no guarantee the book will ever come to be, unless it becomes necessary and people want to know about me personally.

In order to figure out the names for them, I have created a simple cryptogram. It is ridiculously easy for anyone to solve, regardless of age. No bruteforce needed. I also will provide the approximate release dates later on in the case they do get made.

I would like to maintain that there were many who contributed to this project, many names of which were not included, individuals who for whatever reason have chosen not to go public and therefore out of respect, I did not include them. Once these conversations are in the public domain to include them in the possible series, I will do so. But to be certain, there are countless conversations I found to be enlightening that I hope make it to be part of the story. There will be many new names and individuals appearing throughout the book in any case, as it is a story about my personal life. Those willing to share these conversations should, for the public

Paper: Duality: An excerpt

Satoshi Nakamoto

nakamotofoundation@protonmail.com

Here is an article: https://bitcoinexchangeguide.com/satoshi-nakamoto-family-foundation-is-purportedly-writing-a-bitcoin-beginnings-book/

And here is the original text: http://nakamotofamilyfoundation.org/duality.pdf

I read most of Satoshis emails and forum posts when I wrote this Who is Satoshi Nakamoto ? Suspects, frauds and conspiracies on bitcointalk

My immediate thought after reading the paper " Duality: An excerpt " was - that ain't Satoshi.

So I ran it through an analysis program using a number of samples. The level of English used is identical. But there are big signs it is not Satoshi.

The paper in my opinion is written in a boastful and slightly condescending tone (towards the reader) which is very unlike anything Satoshi is known to have written.

The paper also used almost double the amount of pronouns than Satoshi does in any of his known correspondence.

Those findings would also fit the profile of a scammer or "hoaxer".

The "paper":

Known Satoshi email:

The real Satoshi also appears to a more consistent and considered writer.

Than whoever wrote that "paper".

1735  Other / Meta / Re: Another nullius is rising! [Disclaimer added] on: July 03, 2018, 03:58:56 PM
I think you should add your disclaimer in the OP thread, as it does not look sarcastic.

I don't always understand the OPs humor or sarcasm but in this case I did. I think it may have been less obvious if you hadn't read some of his other posts.
Humor and sarcasm rely very much of perception of the poster since there are no facial expressions or body language to interpret in written posts.

This results in those with an abundance of sMerit, especially in groups, to have an outsized amount of power in disputes. digaran is a troll and should not be taken seriously, however he is at a disadvantage in any dispute because he has little sMerit and he often is in disputes with those with a lot of sMerit. There will be more people supporting the opposing end of his argument in the hopes of receiving merit (I am not 100% sure this is happening currently however it will happen as more people realize this behavior by those with sMerit).

-snip-

Another point I would make is that those in power tend to be the ones who receive the most merit. Some of this may be in the hopes of staying in the good graces of those in power, and some of this may be in hopes of obtaining power themselves. A good number of those with the most merit are not especially good posters, some are very high profile so they might receive merit for every good post they make (theymos) while “normal” users might receive merit for 1% of the high effort posts of good quality.

I personally think this will ultimately lead to the exclusion of those who do not agree with those in power.

Based on the amount merit digaran has received and from whoom he has received it I believe there is little to be concerned about. He has received merit from some of  those that have tagged him. (others may have him on ignore)  Based on his current progress he is getting more merit than the vast majority of the forum. I haven't looked at his posts to see if he deserves more and that would be highly subjective anyway.

There may be a certain amount of benefit to being "on the right side of power" but there is no evidence that those that voice disagreement are excluded. The disadvantage would be as well that if you are a constant deserting voice others are less likely to be naturally following your posts.

Personally I would not exclude anyone from receiving merit from me if their post is outstanding. Sometimes a post that disagrees can be more refreshing than one that agrees completely (in which case you could just have a conversation with yourself).

I'm sure some people have found me to be annoying at times as well but I certainly don't feel penalized.
1736  Other / Meta / Re: Should ANN and services threads be excluded from the merit system ? on: July 03, 2018, 07:53:33 AM
I agree with you that ANN, or other project or services thread should not be the top merited thread int this forum, they may get merits but not up to this level i believe. It is kinda sad, but the solution to this problem is kinda problematic because we are talking about controlling and directing people how to use merit (at least more) properly than giving it to thread mentioned above.

I wasn't suggesting directing people to not merit ANN threads or services but just turning off the functionality so ANN threads are not capable of receiving merit. Symilar to how signatures are turned off in the serious discussion forum. Merit for posts within the ANN thread should be fine as long as the post deserves it.

Alternatively just removing ANN threads from being displayed on the top merited list or a displayed on a separate list for merited advertisements.

I also don't have as much of a problem with ANN threads receiving merits than with how it is displayed on the list and the volume of merit given to what is essentially a free advertisement - my main issue is with it being displayed on top merited topics the list. It is a form of free advertising that will get abused. ANN threads and Services initial posts are essentially an advertisement.  When people find an advertisement more worthy of merit than an extremely inspiring post by one of the apostles of bitcoin - I have an issue with that. It is disrespectful.

There are many who deserve Merit, but they are not getting merit. There are many people who are not eligible for Merit. But they're getting Merit for any reason. All the Full Member, senior members, and merit donors, who are eligible for Merit, help them with their merit.

Please forgive me if I'm wrong

You are wrong. Threads and posts that deserve merit generally get them. List 5 posts that you think deserve merit and didn't get it. I'll either tell you why they are not getting merit or they get merit. BTW it is also off-topic on this thread.

Also I looked at your post history https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2227612;sa=showPosts and a lot of them moaning about merits but none of them that I would merit. (I generally do not merit posts about merit).

Only 24 posts and a lot of them complaining about merit ?

Members that are getting merit that they don't deserve risk getting tagged for merit abuse (a tagged account is useless for bounty campaigns as most bounty managers won't accept accounts with red negative trust from a DT )

1739  Other / Meta / Re: Should ANN and services threads be excluded from the merit system ? on: July 03, 2018, 04:51:37 AM
Should ANN and services threads be excluded from the merit system ?
Yes (IMO). Few users have also merited me on one of my service threads and I'm pretty sure, they meant to like it (not merit it as if it was a high quality post).
- I created a thread that covers that (#6 on the list), previously suggested by Vod.

Yeah - it would be nice to be able to like some posts that don't necessarily deserve merit. Also smerit runs out. Infinite likes would be quite nice.
1740  Other / Meta / Re: Should ANN and services threads be excluded from the merit system ? on: July 03, 2018, 04:12:47 AM
It will also defeat a large part of the purpose of having the merit system.
I don't know about that--merits given to ANN threads are at least not being given to shitposters, and that stymies their attempts to rank up, which in turn decreases their shitposting paycheck and also discourages account farming.  That, IMO, is the main thing that merits were meant to combat.

But most of the shit posting is done in ANN threads to bump up the thread so it displays on the first page.

Part of the purpose of the merit system is to highlight good posts (which is why they are displayed on the statistics page).

Good non-commercial threads are now harder to find because the ANN threads have taken their rightful spot.

The deep onion ANN thread smerits that they received as a result of the merits received went to shitposters.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;u=1038794

While I am disappointed that ANN threads are dominating the merit rankings - I'm pleasantly surprised that only the deeponion smerits went to shitposters.
The other ANN threads either haven't used their smerits or they were reasonably well distributed.

If the shitposting was quarantined to just that area, I wouldn't have a problem with that, but it isn't.  The main section here (Bitcoin Discussion) has become nothing but a spam section because of signature campaign shitposters.  What I'm saying is at least those people aren't ranking up.  It would be so much worse if the merit system wasn't around.

Maybe you are onto something there. A dual merit system.

x amount of merits and posts to have a signature in the bounty and ann threads - those merits and posts have to be obtained in those sections of the forum.
x amount of merits and posts to have a signature in the other forum threads - those merits and posts have to be obtained in those sections of the forum.

People only wanting to participate in bounties and airdrops wouldn't ever need to post in the main forum.
