No they didn't change their names. They may have been omitted from the list by oversight. They don't appear on the later list either.
OK, so another theory. Maybe they didn't donate 50 BTC but were gifted the VIP status because of their contribution to Bitcoin and the forum. Yeah - I did think that could have been the case. Especially with Hal being a bitcoin icon. Mark Karpeles (MtGox) provided the hosting and provided technical services to bitcointalk from 2011 onwards. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=42572.0 so probably provided services well in excess of the 2011 50BTC value.

In that case there are a huge amount of "thebitcointalk.net" phishing links posted on bitcointalk.org
This may explain some of the hacked accounts.

thebitcointalk.net is it a phishing site ? bitcointalk.to is it a phishing site ? YES IT IS A PHISHING SITEDesigned to steal your login info ! A phishing site is a site set up by scammers that is made look like the real website that you think you are visiting. When you log onto the fake phishing site it steals your username and password. The scammer can then use your username and password to login to the real site and steal your account. EDIT Phishing site.
BitcoinTalk.org is the ONLY domain the forum has.

It is funny how many of them have made stupid choices or fuck up someone. I think many of these should still use an altcoin. And some still access the forum with this account, but few comments. This should tell a lot about the current situation of the forum and the difficulty of finding a good topic to discuss a more serious matter.
In the early days of the forum it was an extension of the Crypherpunks mailing list. It was a collection of IT savvy crypto enthusiasts. Main discussion was about code development and the eco-system. Interesting trades were being done. Now that cypto is more mainstream there are fewer public discussions about code development. A lot of user on here are "tip lickers" (looking for free tips, airdrops and bounties). That has resulted in a lot more low quality posts and repetitive discussions lacking substance. This thread was created as an extension of The most iconic bitcointalk threads. History on Bitcointalk. to document some of the development that this forum has been a catalyst for. Some of the early adapters succeeded while other failed miserably or scammed others. This forum is pretty representative of what the whole crypto ecosystem looks like. It's filled with fools and other money hungry individuals nursing their greed, which we can thank the in-process mainstream adoption for. Every person joining this forum but also the crypto ecosystem in general is less likely going to contribute, and it's only going to become worse.
Plenty of them moved over to Reddit, but even that platform has been nuked by trolls, shills, beggars and other fools. We can only adapt to the situation and make the best out of what is left. At the end of the day, no one is forced to stay at this forum. People have the freedom to create their own forum if they think Bitcointalk isn't the right place for them.
Also, some of the oldies might have sold the majority of their coins later on, which gives them less incentive to be active here. It's not only the state of this forum they try to avoid; there is always more than the obvious.

Phishing? I never see thebitcointalk.net url before. Since this forum using bitcointalk.org and not thebitcointalk.net. Maybe you can change it to bitcointalk.org instead of that suspicious site. Please visit this thread. ( https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2813854.0). roslinpl has raised a valid point. I suggest that the OP removed that suspicious link as others might fall for that phishing site. And I remember one user get phished because he complained in his local boards that he/she can get in and his password and email was changed and then we found that the screenshot was not bitcointalk.org but that phishing site. I just found the link as you posted it. I've already removed the links. Phishing? I never see thebitcointalk.net url before. Since this forum using bitcointalk.org and not thebitcointalk.net. Maybe you can change it to bitcointalk.org instead of that suspicious site.
Edited.
It is a suspect site - it was from the google results. Edited and removed it. Thank you for spotting that. Nice effort. i have two comments, putting images between [img] is easier than clicking on it one by one but the topic will take much longer to load + we cannot see the full list because not everything can be loaded... I prefer to put the full list in [.code] then you can keep images at the end. Now, if you want to keep the images, i recommend using default trust.
I think I have default trust set. Some of the images were accidentally taken from a clone site (google result) - now changed so it did not show the trust. At the time it was late and I thought it was just legacy accounts but as another user pointed out it is a suspect site (so I have changed all the links and those images). I'm not quite sure I understand your [.code] suggestion.

Nice work dude. Maybe you may consider to include the "Bitcoin and Two pizza day"- the day when 2 pizzas where sold for 10000 btc. For me that was an interesting topic and besides it was a part of the history. I think this should be included on your compilation of Funny threads . I really love this April Fool's prank by theymos. I wonder what will happen if that new ranking system will become reality, i'm pretty sure that I'm now a Legendary member lol (just kidding) . Laszlo pays 10,000 bitcoins to get two pizzas delivered from Papa John’s is already listed under the INTERESTING category. [April fools] New new rank requirements I've listed it in both categories now. I will be most interested in the Funny Threads. Please dig deeper for some Gleb's stuff and you might find the jewel.Btw you should also have a set of threads dedicated to the core contributors. There are very few but the information shared is quite valuable. You are missing Engg.Chakks and Mr.Karalle threads in the scam accusation section. (2016 boys would understand)
I will do some research on the scam and Glebs posts. Perhaps someone can help me a bit with the core contributors technical stuff. It is not a area that I have a lot of knowledge of and it is something that is really important. I'd like to have some more of that for my history thread as well. Thanks - fixed. I'll include that thread.

I opened this topic expecting one of those poorly repeated topics talking about Satoshi for the millionth time but I was surprised to see this nice compilation of all the theories so far. it was merit worthy. I specifically like the " Samsung Toshiba Nakamichi Motorola" thing Thank you for the compliment. I did try to consolidate as many theories as possible. The recent Kleiman developments are interesting. If Kleiman was Satoshi then it will still take years to play out through the courts. A Satoshi million bitcoin selloff will mean cheap bitcoin for a while.

This one should also be included. While it isn't "analytical" it is really important that people recognize when a coin is being artificially "pumped". The way a pump and dump works: Pump and dump groups are scams. The organiser is the only one that generally makes money. They buy a crypto cheap. Then the announce it to a select few who buy not quite as cheap. Then they announce it on a telegram or social media (discord / twitter) platform. The frenzy of noobs buy it up high while the organiser offload it onto the people participating in the pump. They use all the pump group members as shills (shill = people who hype and advertise a coin without using logic - e.g. xyz coin is going to moon buy it now! ) to spam trollboxes, forums and get them to involve their friends. Sometimes the shills make some money but eventually they or someone else end up holding the bags (bags = overpriced crypto that you cannot sell without making a substantial loss). The shills will have crypto that is worth much less than you paid because they participated in the scam and got caught out by the scam. Pumps and dumps also hurt the crypto it targets and crypto as a whole.

Type 1. ICO as a SCAM Check out the team - find out whether they are using their real names or just "stolen" pictures from social media sites. Like with this FAKE ICO https://www.uatchain.com/The photos on that ICO are so fake that they used the same photo for two of their team members. "James" and Tony" must be identical twins. Google image search is handy for that. Find out what other projects they have been involved with before. If in doubt don't invest. Type 2. Scammers who sell FAKE COINS (name / coin code is same but coin generating contract is different) How to protect yourself: Check the contract address of these coins, if it came from the same contract address Ethereum tokens are notorious for this. - But other token platforms will be targeted too as they become more popular. Also be aware of non scams that can fool you. Different exchanges use the same ticker for different coins. In any case, can someone post a guide on how we get our share of BTG, and is this site safe to use? https://btgwallet.online/In an interview, victims blamed the association of the website with the official bitcoin gold project as a source of the effectiveness of the operation.
One of the victims, Mikel Martin, explained to CoinDesk:
"I reached this site by following the link at [the] bitcoingold.org official website so I trusted it. Yesterday afternoon I noticed both my BTC and BTG stored in that wallet were gone."
Before the thefts became apparent, the team behind bitcoin gold – an effort to create a new version of bitcoin that would restrict the types of hardware that can be used for mining – promoted mybtgwallet.com on their Twitter account, assuring users that it was safe to use on multiple occasions.
The person behind the service was, to an extent, ingratiated in the nascent BTG community, including its Slack channel. Before reading your post I didn't know anything about how the 2015 hack occurred. It shows that the forum itself is very secure but if the service provider gets phished into resetting the root password that all gets bypassed. The problem with individual accounts getting hacked is that they are inactive accounts so they are unaware that they need to change their passwords. I would guess all the easy passwords were broken a long time ago and hackers are cracking some of the more difficult ones now.
The Pharmacist was spot on when he said: I have a feeling--and I'm probably stating the obvious here--that a lot of hacked bitcointalk accounts have been sold outside of this forum, because I've seen numerous old-time accounts that suddenly woke up in October 2017, changed their writing style, and started posting in a typical bounty hunter fashion. Shitposts in the Altcoin Discussion section, mostly. I tagged a number of them one night after doing some "research" in that section.
Around 2017 the list from the 2015 hack appeared on the darknet. I think a lot of dormant legacy accounts were sold then. An interesting article that is really attractive to read and know the history of this forum about. Many thanks for such an excursion into the history. I think this will be useful to all forum participants.
I knew the forum had been hacked a couple of times but didn't know the details. It was only when I made a general timeline of events in crypto history that I discovered that the hacks / vandalism were quite interesting. Doing this post made me realise there was a strong connection between Bitcointalk and Mark Karpeles which led me to the next project : Bitcointalk history of MtGox and how a Bitcointalk post caught the MtGox hacker.

Great, informative post.
Hacking isn't really as prevalent today, or as damaging as phishing does to crypto exchange users, due to the sheer amount of phishing scams out there in every shape or form possible trying to get your money.
The most common scam that I see people falling for is probably the good ol' google ads phishing site, which is also mentioned in your OP. Part of the problem is that google doesn't check the legitimacy of the URL before listing it on their ad platform. That's why you should always remember the official URL of your exchange, and try to type it in every time, or even bookmark it, instead of searching for it on google. Even if you do search for it, don't click on any ads.
Also, another phishing scam would be impersonators in twitter comments posing as exchange management giving away coins. They'll use a similar name in their profile as the official exchange twitter account. These are quite obvious, but some people still fall for it - just be aware.
It's your money on an exchange, you should take an active effort to protect it.
The reason phishing is more popular than hacking is because it is relatively unsophisticated compared to hacking. Exchanges have relatively secure websites that are hard to hack and often are independently penetration tested - users are the easiest target and can get fooled into giving away their login credentials. I've added this image - while it isn't phishing people for their account access - it is a common scam involving exchanges. Yeah the twitter scam is a common one. So much so that Vitalik Buterin renamed his twitter account: Vitalik "Not giving away ETH" Buterin

Merits for deleted posts are typically displayed with an error message link (Deleted/Off-limits/Ignored) when we visit a user's merit page. However, when we go to our own merit page through the link https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;and there are deleted posts for which we have been awarded merit, the subject of the threads is still visible. Is this intentional? It had me confused for a while. And almost all points for deleted threads, so he was either spamming and each of his posts got later merited by xandry, or he was posting and deleting everything after getting merited so it's impossible to find out what he was merited for and argue whether the post deserved it or not. Either way it looks like abuse. This is also interesting https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;u=382413Maybe xandry could tell us why almost all posts that he's meriting get deleted. The moderator xandry gives merit for helping in moderating the forum. Russian section of the forum is very big sizes. And we promptly report the posts or threads violate the forum rules. For that sometimes he get merit. P.S. Sorry for my English. Russian Bitcointalk staff gives out merit to people who help him detect spammers. Hence a lot of deleted posts on some of the Russian members merit records. While it isn't the purpose of merit - it does help keep the forum spam free and improve the quality of the posts so in a indirect way assists in the purpose of the merit system.

still i have no merits, with that strategy it will be wasted. many of users are constructive posers but in the end no merits gain. merit system is just call a competition only the best posers will gain merits.
Don't worry about getting merit. Concentrate on making a really brilliant post. Two sentence posts are not likely to get merit. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;statshttps://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=toptopics1) Come up with a brilliant idea. 2) Spend a day or more researching it. Make sure it is totally unique and not copied from somewhere else. Link to as many good sources as you can. (Will help future researchers) 3) Write it up and get someone to proof read it. Use a spell checker. If your English is not great ask someone to help with the grammar or post it in your own language. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=219.0 (Phlippines board) 4) Constantly update and maintain your post so it becomes a masterpiece that everyone wants to read. Also so it is something that you can be proud of. Ask for community input so you can correct and update. It is better to have one brilliant post than 1000 mediocre ones.
