1641  Other / Meta / Re: Announcing the 🦊 Vulpine Order of Merit 🦊 on: July 21, 2018, 03:14:56 PM

🦊 What do I win?
New members of the Vulpine Order of Merit will receive their choice of a chocolate bitcoin wrapped in gold foil, a game rabbit burrito served with habanero sauce, a slice of Black Forest gβteau made with genuine Black Forest kirsch, a 55-gallon drum of WD-40, a pine cone in a bottle, or THE MYSTERY BOX which may contain any of the other prizes, all of them, nothing at all, or something else entirely (and the box itself is worth something too).*

Call me a skeptic but I suspect this is a thinly veiled guise for KYC verification.

1647  Other / Meta / Re: Thanks for the info guy on: July 21, 2018, 12:47:41 PM
Looked through his account's latest posts and 90% of it is about saying thank you to the "information" he has received with nothing else to add or contribute. He might still be under the impression of the old ranking up method were there is still no merit system yet. Also if you are personally annoyed with this guy pressing the "ignore" button works well the only downside to this is you won't see him improve on his posts (not unless you un-ignore him) when he decided to do so later on.

Nah - users like that need to be reported. It is considered a "low quality post bumping the thread". Just keep pressing the "report" button to help the moderator and they will all disappear.....until the next one appears....

If you see that the user is doing it habitually just add : "Please check user history & nuke user." to your report.

Edit:

Ooops...I should read the whole thread.... What Hilarious said:
Just report one post and leave a comment that all his posts are like this and the account will be nuked (or banned if it's a higher rank than Newbie). I suppose we could implement a button on someone's profile like 'report this account' but it's not really needed when you can just report their posts.
1648  Other / Meta / Re: Is it really worth to post a thread on Scam Accusations ? on: July 21, 2018, 12:40:38 PM
Anything that highlights that there are a lot of scam ICO's is good.

Scam ICO's are taking crypto from noobies as easily as taking candy from a baby.

It gives crypto a bad name and the few decent ICO's may miss out on investor funds as a result.

Bitcointalk has very good google visibility.

A bitcointalk post stopped me from buying a Yesminer a couple of years ago.

You only have to stop one person from losing their crypto to make it worth it.
1649  Other / Meta / Re: Wall of fame / shame. Shit posts so bad that they are actually funny on: July 21, 2018, 12:10:04 PM
Just caught this beaut.

I've been very brave today as I've made at least 100 decisions, including to ridicule this post.

How many Merits does this post deserve for this information we all need?

10, 20 or more?

Many people ARE scary when the price has been dumped !

I've seen coin communities ready to lynch their Devs and throttle their community co-ordinator.

The problem with new thread starters is that they usually don't check if there is an existing thread talking about the same thing.

Almost everyone will have been guilty of that at some time - including myself.

Some of the most frequent new duplicate thread starters are well established members. But the hordes of newbies often make things hard to find.

I should also add that the "newbies" that cause the most problems are actually established account farmers. So "newbie" is not really the right term.
Most newbie accounts that cause the problems are multi accounts of bounty hunters or account farmers that sell ranked accounts to bounty hunters and signature spammers.

Which is part of a much wider problem - the injustice of poverty. Some of the bounty spammers see it as their only way to earn a living.

In 2016 and  2017 I started no new topics. The conversation I had was in threads started by others. If nobody started new topics it would be a dull place but if people were more careful as to the reasons for starting a new thread it would make it easier to read.

Another thing that would make it easier to read is if people read opinions of others already voiced in the threads. This is why I find some of the bitcoin threads so hard to read - because it is so repetitive.

Meta seems to be the least dull place on the forum with many new interesting things brought up daily. So posters get criticized here for bad posting habits.

The problem seems to be lack of prior research.

The problem can be viewed here

EDIT:
Use the search function (especially google for bitcointalk specifically)

For newbies - this is a good place to find nice threads to read if you don't want to search through loads of boring posts:

I tend to follow my favorite posters by checking where they have posted.

At the bottom of their profile:

(A bit stalker-ish - I know - but they find good posts for me without even realizing it  Grin )

Another good place to find stuff is:

I always type in websites before I log in. Bitcointalk is always up for me. But thinking about it I did have to log in again several days ago.
Is it possible you clicked a link through Google? Google loves showing phishing site .TO instead of .ORG.

phishing site
Code:
thebitcointalk.net
is fake too and will steal your password.

It is super easy to get caught out.

These are some links that came up via google that I accidentally posted a while back:

Fortunately someone picked up the error and notified me so I could change it.

I know, I may have been hacked but...

I checked my merits sent and on July 17 it shows 3 different merits given of 50 merits each for threads I have never visited.

Very odd that someone would hack my account just to merit someone.

I have since changed my password but I would have figured a hacker would do some more interesting things with a Legendary account than merit some people.

Or is this a random bug.

Change your password. Check your email hasn't been changed.

Account farmers value merit. Obviously enough to resort to crime.

This may explain how it was done: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4426885.0
1656  Other / Meta / Re: thebitcointalk.net is a phishing site ! (edited) on: July 20, 2018, 12:52:23 AM
This is a wake up call for us to  exercise caution when logging into our bitcointalk.org accounts, I narrowly escaped logging into one of the phishing sites account, the user interface looks very similar to this forum and this could probably be the major reasons why many accounts of unsuspecting forum members was hacked.

Particularly risky are the google links.

I accidentally posted some links once and one of the senior members on here did that recently as well.

You have to remain vigilant.
1657  Other / Meta / Re: I think the Chinese manager is not fair ,he should be down on: July 19, 2018, 12:42:48 PM

I think the China native thread would not have any guys post, because your banned.

A forum with less spammers would be bliss. Once they are gone it will be much easier for the moderator. Somehow I don't think that will happen.

As we know ,the biggest farmer in this website was Russia but not Chinese, why the Russia manager don't banned the account like u?

They do ban them and they are ruthless with plagiarism as well.

I just only had 3 accounts to join the translation bounty. but you had been banned them,I would not join any activity from now,I think if you don't get out ,nobody would post anything.
you just play yourself, u are killing the bitcointalk.

Plagiarism is against the rules.
IF you post something that you didn't write yourself then you have to quote it and include a reference with a source.
1658  Other / Meta / Re: Edit: My hacked account was used for merit abuse by this user: bgpsq on: July 19, 2018, 07:41:35 AM
How can receiving merits be against the rules ? This can be used to ban accounts of innocent users as well.

If you look at the times that merit was received  - that is not normal. Especially when some of that merit came from a hacked account.
All the accounts that participated in that should be banned or at least tagged.

LoyceV already mentioned that earlier in his post with a link to the post where that was identified.

Apparently not using a computer helps with back pain..

Stop or switch ? I'm happy to swap a basic phone for your S9...

How to make a girl fall for you by throwing things she likes at her ? Chocolates maybe... I'm sure if you throw her hair straightener it won't impress her...
(It might leave an impression if it is still hot)

Best topics to talk about ? Topics you like talking about... Really ? Talking about crypto might bore her. Talking about sex might be a bit inappropriate.

I think Maianhtrinh got lost on the forum...or the zoo...

Animals in cages have their freedom taken away. I learn something every day.

Not quite sure how to interpret that one. When there are no people ?
