1181  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it really Bitcoin Anonymous? on: October 01, 2018, 08:25:06 AM
Bitcoin is pseudo- anonymous. It is not anonymous.
That's exactly what I tried to write in my article. By the way, not only bitcoin, But all altcoins have such essence. I wish I had thought otherwise.

Not all altcoins either. There are some privacy coins that are anonymous. zcash, monero, electroneum. To name a few.

Of course as soon as you try to exchange it to fiat via a centralized exchange all anonymity is lost.

1182  Other / Meta / Re: Racism and bigotry on: October 01, 2018, 08:07:00 AM
Some people are Promo-Primate turds that prove that even monkeys evolved.  But there is no valid reason to ban them. Banning people just because you don't agree with their opinion is censorship and forcing your opinion (by censorship) onto everyone else.  "Ignore" just blocks their opinion from reaching you - why wouldn't that be enough ? Why would you want to impose your opinion on others ?

Censorship is a form of bigotry and intolerance.
1183  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is it really Bitcoin Anonymous? on: October 01, 2018, 07:39:43 AM
Bitcoin is pseudo- anonymous. It is not anonymous.

Satoshi had no illusions of this:

When you send to a bitcoin address, you don't connect to the recipient.  You send the transaction to the network the same way you relay transactions.  There's no distinction between a transaction you originated and one you received from another node that you're relaying in a broadcast.  With a very small network though, someone might still figure it out by process of elimination.  It'll be better when the network is larger.

If you send by IP, the recipient sees you because you connect to their IP.  You could use TOR to mask that.

You could use TOR if you don't want anyone to know you're even using Bitcoin.

Bitcoin is still very new and has not been independently analysed.  If you're serious about privacy, TOR is an advisable precaution.

Surely Alpacas and Llamas are the funniest animals in the world.

DrSeuss creations couldn't even outdo them.

1185  Other / Off-topic / Linux users thread. If you like Linux or are curious and want to ask questions. on: September 29, 2018, 09:38:01 AM
About three years ago I started using Linux seriously. Before that I played around with it but it was not in daily use.

It took a while to get used to but the longer I have used it the more I like it.

I still operate a couple of windows machines but most of my computers now run various variants of Linux.

My favorite desktop is Mint with Ubuntu coming a close second. (They are quite similar and a lot of features are shared)
https://www.linuxmint.com/
https://www.ubuntu.com/

Some of the Pi's I run on Raspian but I have a couple running on Ubuntu MATE quite successfully.
https://www.raspbian.org/
https://ubuntu-mate.org/raspberry-pi/

For anyone wanting to start out using Linux I recommend googling the make and model of your machine first to check compatibility. Some computers / Laptops are more suited for Linux than others. Some drivers are not readily available for some models.

Try it with an old computer that is slowing down by bloatware from windows and revive the computer by running a version of Linux. With Mint and Ubuntu being the recommendation for someone starting out. But there are a lot of other fantastic variants out there too.

Puppy Linux if you want something really lightweight.
http://puppylinux.com/

Gentoo is better for experienced users. It can be a study in frustration - but rewarding when you can get it to finally work.
https://www.gentoo.org/

Tails is great for if you don't want to leave any trace of use behind. It is boot-able from a DVD or USB
https://tails.boum.org/

There are other privacy oriented Linux distributions as well:
https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/linux-distros-paranoid-secure-distros-si/

Even the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) (North Korea) has its own sanctioned version of Linux called: Red Star OS
It is closed source and watermarks media files copied to external media with the hard drives serial number. You also don't get root access.

1186  Other / Meta / Re: [Merit Analysis] "Self Made" users based on earned merit on: September 29, 2018, 02:29:21 AM
Merit was designed to be accumulated at approximately the same rate as activity.

So there are a lot of Legendary that have not yet received 1000 merits (other than their airdropped merits).

It is expected to take at least 2 - 3 years to rank to Legendary so for Legendaries it would be unfair to say that they don't have the self made merit.

If a legendary received around 200- 300 merits by now they would be well on their way to being "self made" by the time the 2-3 years are up.

Also people often have bursts on a forum  (Periods where they post a lot) . So they may be taking it easy at the moment.

Some really good content was posted over a number of years but only the "famous historic content" gets merited.

Most merit is given to new content.
1187  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How does a double spend 51% attack work ? Explanation and examples. on: September 27, 2018, 11:26:47 AM
I was thinking about it these days. A 51% attack really successful, would need the hacker to withdraw into another currency. Once they discovered this attack, the currency could devalue or have other problems.

So for an exchange to avoid this type of attack would not it be simpler to create security methods making it difficult to buy, sell and withdraw into another currency in large amounts in a short time?

Would users be hurt too much? Maybe limit this to projects that take some 51% attack risk?

Yes- the attacker would have to convert to another currency on an exchange and withdraw or purchase goods from a merchant and receive physical possession of the goods or crypto before the double spend is discovered.

Really the only safe solution is for the network hashrate to be so high that it is impossible to rent enough hashrate to wage an attack.

On small low hashrate networks it is very cheap to wage a 51% attack. So the more confirmations a merchant requires - the longer the attacker will make the side chain. On some chains the code would potentially allow the side chain to be very long. People already complain about 20 confirmations. Even 200 confirmations would not provide a guarantee.

Only transactions that are sent during the attack are affected by the attack. If you hold crypto in your wallet it is unaffected.

The only real longterm decentralised solution is merged mining or a POW / POS hybrid. POW & Masternodes hybrids are also a potential solution. With masternodes the largest stakeholders protect then network. Checkpoints are also a potential solution.

For bitcoin and litecoin it is a relatively low risk. They are unlikely to produce a protocol that counters a 51% attack because the reason the code behaves in such a way is beneficial when there is no 51% attack  - and those chains have a low risk of an 51% attack because the blockchain has sufficient hashrate to protect against it.

A lot of the development is done by the large coin networks and just copy and pasted by the rest of the alts. This doesn't affect the large coin networks so the smaller coins have to figure it out themselves.

It is only the smaller coins that are at risk. They have insufficient hashrates to protect their network and it costs the attacker only a small amount to wage a 51% double spend attack. On some low reward networks it would cost as little as $4 for an hour attack.

http://www.crypto51.app/

The % rate shows the nice hash hashrate available to conduct such an attack. As you can see it is more than feasible. MMR also has lots of hashpower available for rent.

For a this reason a lot of small POW coins have swapped to hybrid chains or tokenized and rely on the higher hashrate of the chain that runs the token.

1188  Other / Meta / Re: Death Threat from the Worldcore team on: September 27, 2018, 06:14:10 AM
Worldcore - just an another account farm. I told you so...
administrators should delete all this infection from the forum.

<snip>

here are the multiaccounts of bots who were hired to blackmail worldcore project that is a payment system. how can a payment system be a scam?

I don't know what that DOX has to do with the accusation. There appears to be no point to it and in violation of the rules.

1. Personal information must be confined to the new "investigations" board (under Scam Accusations), which is only visible to Members and above. Personal information is defined as anything which links a user's online identity (username, email, etc.) to their meatspace identity, excluding links that the person himself has posted. It is not allowed to post somebody's personal information in any other public place, including in signatures.
2. It is not allowed to post someone's dox if it is especially obvious that you're just using the dox as a weapon. For example, if there are no remotely-plausible trade complaints, then the person can't be a scammer, and their dox should not be posted.
3. As before, anything that the legacy insecure government/banking system requires to be secret is not allowed anywhere. This includes social security numbers, credit card numbers, and certain account numbers.

I haven't been following the Worldcore scam accusations and don't know who is right or wrong and do not have the time to look at it closely.

Those profiles that you listed don't look related and I know who one of those profiles belongs to.

Definitely no bots. Making accusations that don't stand up to scrutiny makes you look dodgy.

However it looks like the triplets disappeared with the help of the moderator.

Worldcore - just an another account farm. I told you so...

Scams are not moderated. They are dealt with independently by the default trust system.

Alts are permitted but you are not allowed to use alts to post sequential posts or have a conversation between your alts.

If one of the alts gets banned then the ban applies to all the alts - the ban is on the person - not just on the user ID.

how can a payment system be a scam?

Since you asked I looked it up:

is the accusation being made.
1189  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How does a double spend 51% attack work ? Explanation and examples. on: September 27, 2018, 02:11:19 AM
There is also some interesting discussion here:

Solution to a 51% attack?

The solution to a 51% attack is never let one entity amass that amount.
1190  Other / Meta / Re: How NEWBIES are treated on: September 27, 2018, 12:56:32 AM

Being a newbie is almost like a bad penny these days, it is easy to get scorned (rightly so sometimes), I hope we do not get too 'unwelcoming' and demoralize newbies with too much criticism. Many newbies are battling with basics, so once in a while, it helps to be patient with them and make some corrections on how posts can be better. It tedious on the part of higher ranks but it is for the greater good.

When I see a genuine newbie struggling I usually send them a PM and help them understand some of the etiquette of bitcointalk.

As tmfp surmised it very effectively about the moderation and trust systems:

Quote from: theymos
There's no need for this to be a complete explanation of everything on the forum.
<snip>

It seems to be a source of (understandable) confusion amongst new members that there are, in fact, two regulatory bodies on BCT.

One lot has rules it doesn't apply and the other lot applies rules it doesn't have; can be a bit of a head fuck for them.

Sometimes a kind PM to a newbie helps them understand the rules and etiquette without feeling picked on. There are far too many spambies to do that to individually so I only do that for those that show they are genuinely interested in participating in conversation.
1191  Other / Meta / Re: BCT forum ratings and other forums, found none! on: September 27, 2018, 12:28:14 AM

People who are butt-hurt because they got banned and the Bcash shills post their reviews here:

https://www.sitejabber.com/reviews/bitcointalk.org
https://nz.trustpilot.com/review/bitcointalk.org

Some of them are amusing to read.

The effectiveness of getting rid of those people and the result of a drop in value in bitcoin and alts. (The end of the crypto manic period) is shown here:

https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/bitcointalk.org

Every crypto related site has experienced a downturn like that.

https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/binance.com
https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/bitmain.com
https://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/coindesk.com

Unfortunately some of the drop in visitors is also because spammers are making it uninteresting for genuine visitors.

WOW Twins and the triplets born just minutes apart. Must have been an easy birth.

Surely they are not alts breaking rule:

32. Posting multiple posts in a row is not allowed.

That would be so silly to do in META where they talk about forum rules, account farms, merit abuse, scammers...etc

Plenty of people here who treat me nice.Thing is you are blind folded.

[he]
Now, stop it here (or you may carry on, I really don't give a fuck) I have useful stuffs to do instead of talking to you back and forth. You are just an attention seeking whore to me.

You are condescending towards anyone that you don't feel the need to suck up to.

Re-read your own comments if you think that you have been talking without being condescending.

You broke the rules and you blame the moderator ? I tried to be amicable but all you do is hurl insults at me. Perhaps you understand this better:

Unfortunately for your big ego - the best part of you ran down your mothers leg.
1196  Other / Meta / Re: Mod which part you missed that you had to delete my post? on: September 26, 2018, 02:34:36 PM

How this become shitty?

This will be shitty now... read...
Please back off mate. You do not need to be nice or shit with me. Just back off from my post.

Perhaps you can explain it to me in case I misunderstood.

Being public forum - I can respond to whatever post I wish. If you want to talk to yourself I suggest you send yourself a personal message. You have another alt now so that should be easy.  You seem to be a slow learner. Has telling me what to do ever worked for you ?
1197  Other / Meta / Re: Writing a welcome message on: September 26, 2018, 02:14:50 PM
I don't think Plagiarism is something that needs to be pointed out as being something you can't do. First of all, this is something that people should know they shouldn't do, for a number of reasons, and I believe most people who do this know it is wrong, but do it anyway.

Well it shouldn't have to be but it really does need to be pointed out that this isn't acceptable and you can see that from the number of threads from people in Meta asking why they were banned and if they can get a second chance, so people should be made aware of the rules and the punishments for doing this so there's no excuses then.

Also, I don't think it is as big of a problem in terms in the number of people getting into trouble doing this. Sure there are very many instances of this happening, however I suspect this is done by a fairly small number of people with a very large number of sockpuppet accounts, and I suspect this is often done via some kind of automation/AI.

The only change that has been made is that they now require one merit or purchase a Copper Membership but when some of the worst offenders are making tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars from abusing bounties and campaigns they'll just purchase the merit or rank to bypass this. Merits can then easily and quickly be distributed between their alts and that's why I think we should require much more merit before you can start earning here, or at least make them buy a much more expensive Silver or Gold rank.

Are the abusers buying the Copper memberships and getting banned? Most of the new Copper memberships I have seen appear to be bounty managers.

You'd have more of an idea about that than me - being able to see how many coppers get banned - I'm asking out of curiosity.
1198  Other / Meta / Re: Mod which part you missed that you had to delete my post? on: September 26, 2018, 02:00:38 PM

No hilari, you are wrong. It pissed me off because I had clearly stated that please do not remove the post. The rest I have explained above.

That is where the moderators went wrong ? They shouldn't enforce the rules when someone posts "please do not remove the post".

Does that work with parking wardens too ? Note on car "please do not tow for illegal parking".

You complain about Legendary's getting special treatment but expect moderators to PM you before removing a post ?

I may not be a Legendary to enjoy special privilege however I build up this account from 0 to here and I am well aware of the forum environment. Just because I have two red trusts, do not mean that I am a shit and you can not treat me as no one. I feel insulted sometimes.

If you weren't so condescending and insulting towards others then perhaps people would treat you better.

I was just trying to be helpful in my first post and then you had to turn it into something negative. Normally I just avoid you but if you act shitty towards me then you get my attention.
1199  Economy / Economics / Re: Why Malta is the most favored Location for Crypto Exchanges? on: September 26, 2018, 01:06:24 PM
Why would I select to open a company in USA, UK, France, Germany or similar and be strictly followed and pay insane amount of taxes when I can bring my business to Malta and make boatloads of cash right on day 1 without worrying about government putting its nose in my business ?

Well it's advantageous to operate your business where most of the user base are. There's also a sense of security that comes with dealing with a company that doesn't operate from somewhere not much people don't know about.

Malta is hands-down better policy-wise just because of clarity alone, don't get me wrong, but if it were such a no-brainer, everyone would be packing up to go.

Malta is an ideal base for those aiming for the European, Middle Eastern, African and Asian markets.

Small country means the Government is easily accessible but also still seen as legitimate by other countries.

There are major benefits from having easy, open access to top Government officials and politicians.

Some exchanges avoid the US market because it is a risky market to operate in. SEC, lawsuits, unfavorable regulations, local Government interference are just a few reasons to avoid  being located in the USA.
1200  Other / Meta / Re: Why would a moderator delete these old posts? on: September 26, 2018, 12:20:46 PM
So this morning i woke up with 3 pms that some of my old post were deleted my moderator.
Now i admit these are not the best posts i've ever made, but do they really deserve to be deleted?

If you have bad post in your history it pays not to post in Meta.

It is where the group of members hang out that report rule-breakers, account buyer/sellers, merit abusers, get entire spam farms banned and look for scammers.

Someone will look into your post history if you post here.
