1621  Other / Meta / Re: Instructions on how to use BBCode on: July 24, 2018, 01:34:27 PM
Nicely laid out.

Would be good to include a link to the Forum help section that covers some of this. It will help people learn to navigate and realize the forum does have most of the resources they need.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=help;page=post#bbcref

This is found under the help tab, in the top left corner of the screen, then the posting section, finally under references SMF Bulletin Board Code

I did learn something new here though about making different list formats, and tables.

Good suggestion - Done !

Bitcointalk trolls, internal dysfunction and all out flame wars. Guide to the scandals.
Alternative title: Strays, catfights and hissing competitions.

I’ve considered writing this earlier. It is with some reluctance that I write this. I do not want to re-open old wounds or getting inadvertently involved. It is written from a neutral perspective so that an outsider understands it. I decided to go ahead after Pugman published a list and then  encouraged me to write an article about it.

Corrections, additions and comments welcome.

It was a marketing strategy and they tried to say they raised so much in just a day or 2.

I doubt they raised anymore then 1 BTC.
You are ok with ICOs stating false information about how much they have raised to other potential investors... and you would call this a marketing strategy?

No, but when I'm 2 weeks into a bounty program I'm basically forced to go along with it.

This is nothing but deceitful nonsense. What you call a "marketing strategy", I would call fraud.

Scammer: a confidence game or other fraudulent scheme, especially for making a quick profit; swindle.
Swindle: to obtain money or property by fraud or deceit
Fraud: a person or thing intended to deceive others, typically by unjustifiably claiming or being credited with accomplishments or qualities.

No, but when I'm 2 weeks into a bounty program I'm basically forced to go along with it.

No, you are not forced to do anything you do not want to do here, especially when someone is being fraudulent.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=328053.0

Vod is attempting to create an unlimited and unconsented liability by offering refunds for those who have rendered services from me.

To be clear, your liability only extends to those you escrow scammed.   I've asked for a link for each request, so the community will easily be able to see if you scammed them, or if you properly used a third party escrow.

You could make this easier on everyone by providing a list of those you have scammed, so they can ask for the refund you have promised.

You know the first won't happen. Self moderated threads are self moderated and the OP may do so as they please; they've been there since the inception of the forum with "Local Rules".

I agree that Vod should certainly be removed from DefaultTrust. His remarks disparaging you as a scammer could fall under Canadian defamatory law; given the business activities you conduct on bitcointalk and the damages Vod's remarks could have on you, you might be interested in pursing civil action. And you'll get justice on Vod.

@Quickseller, I'll contribute 20 BTC towards a civil lawsuit against Vod. One of his email addresses is mlawrence02@yahoo.com , as given here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=95795.msg1070760#msg1070760

You may be able to subpoena Yahoo Canada for his IP address (via a John Doe-style civil suit), and then subpoena the ISP for account holder details.

people calling Vod a pedophile vod
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1248407.msg12962871#msg12962871

This is essentially due to a false and malicious report made about Vod on the ripoffreport. The website is owned by Ed Magedson who makes it particularly difficult for process servers to find him. While he claims not to remove anything from his website. He will remove it for a ongoing fee. The ripoff report is currently in serious trouble in several jurisdictions.

In March 2017, the Italian Data Protection Authority affirmed that Ripoff Report's activities — namely, Ed Magedson's requests for money to edit web pages — are illegal in Italy. The Italian authorities also noticed that Ripoff Report's web servers are occasionally not reachable from Italy in order to evade controls by the authorities themselves. Besides, they noticed that some web pages — which were being investigated by the authorities — were deleted out of the blue by the website owner, despite the claim that Ripoff Report does not remove reports.

A federal court stated that victims have "probable cause to sue for extortion and racketeering". http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ripoff_Report

Lauda & Tman v The Russians

With the introduction of DT voting there was concern that the Russian forum (second largest language forum after English) were strategically voting to get their representatives into DT1
This led to a number of prominent Russian accounts being distrusted by a number of prominent DT accounts.
Theymos put Tman on his distrust list and soon afterwards sent the email below to the DTs about Lauda.
Eventually some of the dispute with the Russians was resolved and a number of trustworthy Russians are now members of DT1 and DT2.
Some others are still excluded.

Theymos V Lauda
A number of events culminated to a disagreement between Theymos and Lauda.
Lauda advocating for more pro-active tagging of scammers to prevent scams. At the risk of accounts being unfairly tagged.
Theymos having a more of a wait and see approach, forgiveness and reconciliation approach at the risk of people getting scammed.

Theymos and Lauda both wrote to most of the DTs to express their views.

1627  Other / Meta / Re: Text spinning/disguised plagiarism on: July 22, 2018, 12:52:10 PM
IMO (do not read this as an official forum statement), it's clearly plagiarism.  Changing a few words is still stealing the idea of the original author.  Try that trick at work as a journalist (or university) and see how fucking fast you're fired and shunned...  Without this type of rule folks could "word fuck" anything and claim it as there own.

All of the following are considered plagiarism:
-turning in someone else's work as your own
-copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
-failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
-giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
-changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
-copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether ---you give credit or not (see our section on "fair use" rules)
Source: https://www.plagiarism.org/article/what-is-plagiarism

The problem with calling it plagiarism rather than shit posting using a random buzz word generator is that a lot of the sentences are so short that it is not really much of an original idea. Probably an idea generated by one of their many alts to farm accounts for resale.

Otherwise simply posting "good project" would be plagiarism.

Just because someone posted the same sentence before doesn't automatically make it plagiarism. It could be co-incidence or gathered their information from the same source.

http://www.robietherobot.com/buzzword.htm

Shills and bots deserve nuking or banning whatever it is called what they are doing.

It might sound very harsh but:

When something feeds on a host and cannot sustain itself without that host is is called a parasite.

Whether it is a parasitic worm or pathogen.

If it is living in your body and you want to get rid of it - nobody blinks an eye.

Murdering a tapeworm ? Massacring bacteria ?

When a host has something growing in them they should have the right to get rid of it.

Whatever the parasitic organism might be. Tapeworm, bacteria, sperm or fetus.

Pregnancy is a reasonably dangerous medical condition - try applying for life insurance while pregnant !

Once it can sustain life by itself without a host it becomes murder.

But people should take more responsibility and not get pregnant in the first place if they don't want to have a kid.

The world is overpopulated by humans. For a child to be born into a world when it is not wanted by its parents it creates a huge problem for that child.

Emotional trauma and financial disadvantage.  Consider prevention before pregnancy and consider adoption before termination.

Once they are born they have rights and require 18+ years of protection, love and nurture. Unwanted children are just sad. I'd love to adopt a child.

THIS Is one of the biggest reasons not to buy an account !
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4679939.msg42235344#msg42235344

Imagine buying an account previously owned by a criminal wanted on fraud charges by the FBI or the SEC.

It could land you into trouble for something you haven't done and it certainly will put you under scrutiny.

Why buy an account from a swindler where you could end up with:

1) No account and ripped off
2) Paying a lot for "just an account".
3) An account previously owned by a criminal
4) An account that could be banned for plagiarism if that was done during farming the account.

If you can pay a small amount and end up with a copper account.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=credit;promote

1) You won't get ripped off by Theymos
2) It looks super-cool
3) It gives you the functionality of a member account
4) Can choose your own username

Perhaps this is something worthwhile considering. Anti spam memes that get posted on threads that have blatant shilling.

If it isn't good for business then the process might stop. Big, bold and ugly is bad of business.

Perma-ban. It is plagiarism. There is no reason for it. It has no constructive purpose in conversation. It is either shills using it to bump their scam ICO or BOTs that use a random phrase generator.

http://projects.wsj.com/buzzwords2014/#p=4%7C%7C21,23%7C%7C0%7C%7C0

It sometimes sounds funny but the Haiku buzz phrases / Dogecoin style nonsense are just bots using a buzzword generator.

https://github.com/nickmccurdy/buzzword-generator

It would good to be tougher on the ICO's that pay for those shills / bots to post that crap.

Don't feel inadequate.

1634  Other / Meta / Re: Idea: Courses on: July 22, 2018, 07:26:38 AM
Courses could be developed in self moderated threads for brainstorming  (and where scammers are deleted) and then post the finished products as a locked thread.

I like what paxmao is suggesting.

I'm on here a reasonable amount - although that may have to reduce as I am procrastinating about my real life workload.

I try to do at least a few patrols regularly and often end up reporting whole threads with a single report.
Along the lines of - "low quality poster - this whole topic appears to be an alt farm".
Only to come back later and seeing that the moderator has massacred the spammers. (So I know it works)

Also I am happy to help newbies get good at reporting spam to get to their 300.
They can PM me if they want. There is a little bit of a trick to what moderators want reported and how to do it so that is it easy for them.
(How to report multiple spammers without making it a nuisance for them)
Note: I check the post history of people that PM me.

Although one of the recent "bad" reports is puzzling.  Grin

I'm game for a bit of vigilante action !

Bots / shills just talking to each other. Used to happen on a forum that I was a moderator on as well.

Yocoin may begin new era but first they need to understand how make the project presentable to the investor. Because this project lack of adequate details & doesn't show any details about the team & developers
Their teams are very active however they will have a look on all the feedbacks and after gaining all the expectations they may work on all the requirements as per the planned decisions accordingly.
If they are planning to that situation, then its ok.but for me,if they Don't present their project good first, how they will get easily investors  &  make the project successful

Project become successful by a good strategy and a well talented team work. Presentation doesn't impact more. I think the team are working good with their project
Yes, the development of the product matter in the success of the project but also it needs some marketing to attract like-minded community towards the project and make the project more user-friendly.

Yocoin project has that attractiveness that will easily attract investors. Their marketing promotion is going on and this is already give them a huge investors I heard

Really? Well then, everything should be in good place because as what you said, it shows that Yoc has the ability to be attract by the investor. Moreover, they seem to be very active when it comes to fixing some bugs about the site.

1639  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do we talk about Laszlos pizza but not the 1000 BTC poker tournament ? on: July 22, 2018, 01:07:11 AM
Nice find. At current prices, first place earned about $4.5 million dollars, and at peak prices back in December the first prize was worth about $11.4 million. This means that this tiny 4 player bitcoin poker tournament had more prize money than the World Series of Poker (first prize this year of $8.8 million).

Thank you for that info - that is awesome. I knew there would be someone who could put it into perspective.

This is a great quote: "this tiny 4 player bitcoin poker tournament had more prize money than the World Series of Poker (first prize this year of $8.8 million)."

Well, with only 4 people joining the tournament it's understandable why it's been forgotten.

The big question I have is how the pot was funded with 1,200BTC when only 4 players bought into the tournament. The buy in was listed at 55BTC...so where did the extra ~1000BTC come from to fund the payouts?

I suspect shenanigans.

BitcoinFX provided the extra 1000 BTC - worth at the time very little.

Don't forget that in the early days there were only a few "regulars" in the bitcoin community.

dwdollar is user 24, BitcoinFX user 30, DannyM user 51 and Theymos user 35 is the forum administrator.

because people treated it like a "bottletop" game,,
like hal accepting the first ever tx from satoshi..
after hal-satoshi tx .. no tx/games/bottletop swaps seemed as important..

but then.. a real deal for real pizza .. that reset the bar to a higher milestone of importance than hals tx from satoshi

after all, you remember your first love/sexual experience.. but after a few meaningless bodily fluid exchanges.. you dont realy treat a meaningless game of strip poker with a pole dancer as something special

and these days.. its bettr to spend time walking into retailers in your town and get them to adopt bitcoin.. rather than find historic events to hope you can energise adoption with stories of the good old days

I've done the same with some later cryptos. Treated them like bottletops. Tipping then like chocolate sprinkles, playing bingo with them and using huge amounts of them to buy trivial things - only for some of them to have some serious value years later. Nothing like bitcoin. But it was fun at the time and have no regrets about it. If it hadn't happened it would have no value now. From that perspective - it is super cool to see it done with bitcoin. Predecessor to all the alt coins - sometimes the history repeats itself. (Not every altcoin will turn to gold - most of them will fail - most alt coins and ICOs are a ploy to exchange your bitcoin for that "magic fair dust" straight from the vacuum cleaner bag)

Talking to the local bitcoin exchanger. He was telling me that he mined bitcoin when they were around $5 and was overjoyed when they hit $20 and sold them for a quick profit. Those with little faith sold them for a quick buck and those with faith would have still traded them but kept some of them.

There are a number of events that are programmed into the media psyche. There have been far more interesting events that took place. This is one of the ones that stood out when I was documenting some of them. here

While I agree that getting your local retailers to accept bitcoin would be practical and productive. I believe that documenting history is important. Assembling stories, legends and timelines while the memory is still fresh and those that lived it and experienced it still can tell the stories.

Going over old topics I found this fascinating post: The Worlds First Sudo-Anonymous Poker Tournament ?
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=80

I enjoy playing online poker ( Texas Holdem ) and so I've decided to run a tournament with Bitcoins ! No 'real' money will change hands. We are playing for electric bottle tops only. Grin I don't encourage gambling and this will probably be a 'one-off' event for fun. Poker is a skill game anyway, like chess Grin

Introducing...

The 1st ( and only ? ) Bitcoin Forum - Online Poker Challenge Event.

" The Worlds First Sudo-Anonymous Poker Tournament ? "

A Password Protected - Private Game using the Free Open Source - PokerTH - http://www.pokerth.net/

Sat. 20th March 2010 at 3pm ET

50 Bitcoins + 5 Bitcoins Buyin | 1000 Bitcoins added to the Prize pool | 10-Max Table

10,000 Starting Chips, 10 Starting Blinds, Blinds will double every 10 hands !

4 places will be paid. 1st 750 Bitcoins, 2nd 375 Bitcoins, 3rd 250 Bitcoins, 4th 125 Bitcoins ( based on 10 players )

I will be playing and hosting the game and providing the 1000 Bitcoin added prize pool. You are trying to win my Bitcoins ! Cheesy

So, we need another 9 forum members to participate. Entries will be on a first come, first served basis.

Please PM me with your Bitcoin address and a random 'username'. I will then PM you my Bitcoin address to send the 55 Bitcoin entry fee, you will then receive the password for the game lobby.

If a player is a 'no show' or their are less than 5 players, actual players and / or opponents will be 'made up' of computer opponents. Any Bitcoin prize that a 'computer' player should win will be equally divided by the number of actual registered players and equally returned to each participant.

Please download the free pokerTH software to get used to the client. You can also practice against the computer. We will use the 'default' IRC / server and Lobby. You can work out how to connect it through Tor if you want to remain anonymous.

Bitcoin.org or the Bitcube will be advertised in the game lobby whilst we are playing !  Cool

If their is not enough interest or participants I will consider canceling or changing the date / time.

Thank you.

BitcoinFX.

The "Worlds First Sudo-Anonymous Online Poker Tourament" was played with much success. Everyone expressed their enjoyment and we discussed the possibility of holding further event(s) A big thank you to those who took part and to those who expressed interest, but were not able to participate.

Congratulations to our winner dwdollar !!!

Total Prize Pool 1200 bitcoins (4 'real' players)

1st - dwdollar - 600 BTC

2nd - theymos - 325 BTC

3rd - BitcoinFX - 175 BTC

4th - Computer6

5th - Computer5

6th - Computer3

7th - Computer2

8th - DannyM - 100 BTC

9th - Computer4

10th - Computer1

As there were only 4 'real' players and 3 of us finished in the top 3, we agreed that instead of doing a 4 way split on the 4th place prize (won by Computer6), that DannyM should receive the entire 4th place prize.

It was a very unlucky hand DannyM Wink

...

dwdollar was 'un-stopable' for most of the Tourney after taking out 3 computer players in one hand and gaining a monster chip lead.

RIVER [board cards 2h,Kh,Jd,Tc,9h]
Computer3 has [ 6d,Kd] - One Pair, Kings
Computer5 has [ 8d,Js] - One Pair, Jacks
Computer6 has [ Td,Jc] - Two Pairs, Jacks and Tens
dwdollar has [ Jh,Ks] - Two Pairs, Kings and Jacks

dwdollar wins $80150 <<<
Computer3 sits out
Computer5 sits out
Computer6 sits out

...

I'm about to send out the Bitcoin 'winnings', so please confirm that you have received them.

Cool
