Im not stupid enough to type my details into any internet "have I been hacked" search engine.

But had no spam so far.

No need. You can download the leaked files and search yourself using a text editor. That's what I did.

Can't help feeling possessing such data is perhaps a little naughty.

It is, but if you've purchased a Ledger before June 2020 (or ever, really), you are entitled to peek inside and check if your data is in there.
1622  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 22, 2020, 10:47:39 AM
There are 273K customers on the list. That's not a partial database. You bought from them before the leak and you should be there. With whatever data you provided to them. The "persona" I provided to them is in fact there.

[...]

272,853 customers to be exact. I have the file open in front of me now, and, no, I'm not in the list (fortunately)!

It's a kind of weird feeling to see in front of me so many emails, full names, addresses, phone numbers... Several of them in my own neighbourhood. The list is so large, that anyone anywhere could possibly find a Ledger owner close by...

This should make us all aware of the implications of submitting our personal details to different sites on the net. We should not take this lightly.

Did I miss something? Where can I see the list?  Shocked

I don't want to post a link to leaked data... Just Google it. Very easy to find. <--- That's the scary part!

Do we know the dates from and to of the data compromised?

The leaked files do not contain date information. They are in this format:

File 1: Just email addresses (those in Ledger's mailing list)
File 2: Email | Full Name | Address 1 | Address 2 | State/Country | Telephone Number

yeah but its not much different from a list of people who brought expensive hot tubs.

Sure some may be rich, some might just like hot tubs.

There are much easier ways for crooks to find rich people.

The paranoia level here is like a feedback loop.

I just suggested a secure way to check if you're on the list...

I think the more immediate threat for those affected is the spam/phishing flooding of their email accounts. But it is possible that some (hopefully none) could face physical harassment too.
1625  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 22, 2020, 09:36:26 AM
I'm with you on this. I was not affected, purely out of luck (purchased a Ledger from those jokers in 2017—one year before the leaked data), but I'm pretty sure they still have my details.

I'm an EU citizen too. If there is a law or other legal/official info I can use to threaten them in the email I'm going to send them, please let me know, either publicly (maybe here, for the benefit of all), or via PM. I also want to make sure they completely erase my data from their servers.

And I do hope they go bankrupt—I think they will, given that their blunder directly negates their sales pitch for their h/w wallets. Who, in their right mind, would buy a Ledger, or use their online services, after what happened? The Ledger may be a solid product, but I prefer the mafia way of dealing with such issues: "When in doubt, kill 'em all!"

I was lucky too, not affected.
I also browsed and searched the leaked content, and there are surprisingly more customers in my area (within 50km) than i thought.
However, to every name i was visualizing a face getting smashed with a hammer, so i quit sniffing in the file.

Here's your pointer:

https://gdpr-info.eu/art-17-gdpr/

Fixed your link above. Need to remove the extra "http://" and all quotes from the BBCode.

Thanks for this.

A hacker is dumping the Ledger database for free on forums.. emails, phone numbers, addresses etc.. Shocked

Expect huge spam and phishing waves for people owning a Ledger.

Click on this link if you think your data has been compromised.

I have gotten at least 20 spam emails.  /yawn

What this hacker is doing is putting people at serious risk of physical extortion attacks! People may be be kidnapped, tortured and even killed because of his actions. This is a criminal act, and I really hope this hacker is found, arrested and put to jail for life.

That's not even a hacker. It's a troll.
If ledger doesnt grant my "right to be forgotten" as an EU company, to an EU citizen, they're gonna get into trouble, i swear.
They have to send me a proof of deletion. I soon will issue an ultimatum, otherwise my lawyers phone will ring my tune.
News coverage of ledger trying to escape the law would be candy.

Fooking Ledger!!!
What the heck...

Never trusted hardware wallets with significant amounts and never will. Paper/Steel wallets rule.

who gives a s-t about trusting the stupid wallet when fooking home addresses were revealed.
that's the main problem.

So true!

Fortunately, I was not affected, but could have. I was lucky enough to get my Ledger in 2017, when the leaks were from 2018 and later. Funny thing is, I never used the thing. Ended up selling it, still sealed, just the way I received it, to a friend of mine who lives in a far away Asian country...

They should never have been allowed to keep their customers' details. They should have kept them only for the duration of the purchase transaction, and then be forced to wipe their severs clean. But no, they are keeping them, so that they are able to shove their ads and promotions in our faces.

I will email them to formally request that they remove all my personal details from their databases. Oh wait! I wonder if it's a good idea to even email them, as my email may be used to "update" their databases with fresh email activity.

Fuck them! I hope they go bankrupt. Fucking French. Just like the other French MtGox joker, Mark Karpelès. Nothing against France or French people in general. Just angry.

Jimbo has it right. Paper wallets are the most secure overall, albeit the least convenient. But take note of my earlier BIP38 comment.

Just generate your own addresses on a secure system.

I recommend adding a BIP38 password to your private key, this way you can print them on an insecure printer/save backups wherever you like without fear of someone finding your unprotected private keys. It's the "BIP38 Encrypt?" option on bitaddress.org

Obviously they are only as secure as your chosen password, so make it a strong one.

This is very important, yes!

Without a BIP38 passphrase, the generated Bitcoin paper wallet is equivalent to CASH. This means that, if you store the paper wallet in a safe, and the safe is cracked open by a thief, your coins are gone, just like cash would be. Actually, an unprotected paper wallet is much easier to steal than fiat cash, because it's feather-light and takes near-zero space. Similarly, if you hide the paper wallet somewhere and someone finds it, your coins are gone, just like someone finding your real leather wallet and taking the cash inside it.

I take every opportunity I can, to stress how important this is. Never leave/store/hide unprotected paper wallets anywhere, unless you are absolutely certain that no one can get their hands on them. An unprotected Bitcoin paper wallet containing 100 BTC and stored in a desk drawer is equivalent to having $2,300,000 in CASH stored in that same desk drawer. Would you put $2,300,000 cash in a desk drawer? If the answer is NO, then you should not put an unprotected Bitcoin paper wallet in there either.

All of the above are completely avoided by adding a BIP38 passphrase to your Bitcoin paper wallet. Then, that paper wallet will be a completely useless piece of paper to everyone else in the world but you.

Math & science provide the tools. Use them!

Those dumps for ants that quickly bounce back up are so amusing...

Most observers would see high volatility.
I see a stable, upward trend.
Must be my eyes...

Don't know about astronomy, astrology, Xmas stars and all, but Bitcoin is doing great so far.

Looks like I'm going to be winning that 20k € / BTC by Xmas bet...

Elwar is a likable guy, but I've never understood his obsession with seasteading. I guess that, when you become super-rich, something screws up in your head and you become obsessed with pointless, impossible tasks. Risto Pietila comes to mind. It's sad, really.

Trying to go against nature is a futile, pointless task, as is trying to go against the establishment without a feasible plan. Taking the law on your hands and setting up a seastead in the middle of the ocean is madness and delusion combined.

IMHO.

What's worse is having the chance to do something extraordinary but being too afraid to take it.

What's even worse than that, is being able to do wonderful and meaningful things, but wasting your time and wealth pursuing pointless tasks. Risto Pietila's story is a good example.

There's a point in that. In order to succeed you need to solve some real world problem not invent your own. On the other hand, some really innovative revolutionary ideas have been overlooked (including Bitcoin btw). Many bright pioneer inventors were considered to be crazy etc.

I totally agree with that, and I see nutildah's point too. But, IMHO, setting a seastead in the middle of the ocean is, like you said, inventing your own problems. I don't think it solves anything. It costs a lot, it's dangerous (almost deadly), it's far from a natural human habitat. Just imagine being there alone, or even with a partner (no question about having children there). What is the purpose of that, other than satisfying a selfish, almost perverted desire? Everyone is free to do whatever s/he likes, of course...

As for "Satoshi" the ship, again, an interesting project (I may even have merited some of Elwar's posts about it, purely for his determination), but was it really worth it? It just seems pointless to me. Just like Risto's castle.

Talking about all ahead one third, have you heard that Elwars cruise ship Satoshi is getting scraped?

Observing $23,928 & not remotely interested in selling anything for a good while yet. This bull run has only just started really, we have soooooo much scope for upwards price discovery. You should always do what suits you but I don’t think it’s advisable to sell anything yet. Maybe at double this price I’ll start selling but we will see $100,000 per coin within 12 months & I’m starting to think maybe much higher.

Either way, it’s a great time for us, we are all so fortunate to have got into bitcoin so early. I dunno about anybody else but the next 12 months is going to be life changing.

Goodnight fellow bulls!

$100k / BTC is near-certain in 2021. <--- My "MOON" level.
$400k / BTC has been predicted and is not impossible in 2022. <--- My "FUCK-YOU RICH" level.

HoDLsleep for me too.

Goodnight LFC and all.
