Just withdrew the corn I bought earlier today. Man, feels good to see my TREZOR balance rise!

"Buy BTC, HoDL, wait, ∞!"TM

---

Edit: Took 50 minutes to confirm. Not the best performance, but the fee was quite low. All good!

As long as the fee isn’t super low use this - https://pool.viabtc.com/tools/txaccelerator

When we were in the last parabolic rise & Roger was spamming the network I sent a few transactions with a fairly high amount of coins & fucked up by not manually setting my fees. It was taking forever so I used the above. It’s a good service & free.

Thanks LFC, never used a Tx accelerator before, but have heard of them. Good to know that it worked when you tried it, will keep it handy.

The important thing is that, no matter how long they take, all transactions eventually confirm, which shows the super-robustness of the Bitcoin network. For all practical purposes, Bitcoin confirmations are "irreversible certainties". And way faster and cheaper than any fiat Tx...  Cool

Hey WO gang!

Into lurking mode lately, far too busy with real-life stuff... Got a promotion at work, but not too excited about it. I do hope that soon I will not really need to work...

Corn has dropped quite a bit, so I sent a few $k over to Kraken to buy some more. Couldn't resist at such a low price. Now waiting for the transfer to complete (fiat is sooooo slow!).

In a few months' time we'll be wishing we had bought more BTC at four-digit prices. It's an opportunity not to be missed.

Hey WOs! Was REALLY busy with some house renovations and other work-related stuff, so busy I had to only read the last 1~2 pages of WO posts every other day... It's impossible to keep up, but really nice to read even a few posts...

Could have registered to BitcoinTalk much earlier than 2017, but I was put down by how ugly the forum engine looked (and still looks, TBH). Little did I know that I would be so hooked to the WO thread, that it would become my daily must-visit place for years to come...

Many thanks to xhomerx10 for the great hats!

The largest salt flat in the world (Bolivia)

What a beautiful photo! You're lucky if you've been there...
2426  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: August 21, 2019, 03:13:14 PM
With secure transactions you can get this.

Example:

Account X with BTC100
You send BTC1 to Account Y

Account Z is created by your secure wallet
BTC1 will be sent to Account Y
BTC99 will be sent to Account Z

Your remaning balance is now in account Z
The stats say BTC100 was moved even if BTC1 was actually sent out to a foreign account.

P.S. This is done to protect your public key aswell as your private key. Only when BTC is sent does the source address need to provide it's public key.

Nicely explained!

And the more corn there is in an address, the more skewed the results will be, e.g., imagine one has BTC100000 in an address, and sends only BTC0.01 somewhere... Although only BTC0.01 was actually sent out, a whopping BTC100000 was moved.

It’s frustrating atm!

Too right!

It's gotten a little too repetitive to watch those ups & downs over and over again... I'm not worried, and I'm comfortable with what I have, I just look fwd to the moment when I can retire and really enjoy my corn.

It will come. And soon. Halving is exactly 9 months away...

Wow! I wish I knew about this back in 2015 when I was researching about Bitcoin. I'd have bought 10x more corns @ $200 than I did, if I was on this Brain Force stuff...

Damn!

Above post brother

Hey mic, looks like we found the same thing!

When I saw your post above, there was no mention of Unirii, Bucharest...

Let's see if we're right, xhomerx10 will confirm. I tried to get a Google Street View showing the exact spot on his photos, but couldn't.

Interesting, but, hopefully, btc will run further as gold peaked at $800 in around 1980, then peaked in 2011 at around 1800.
Providing similar proportions to btc would result in the $44.5K target for btc (before correction). Some people might be disappointed (expect more).
Of course, it does not have to match.

Historically, there is one interesting notion re gold market... the saying goes like this: the value of Dow and gold price in $$ always reach parity (1:1) at some point (their respective charts intercept or get very close).

Whether it would be 25000 Dow and 25000 gold or 12000 Dow and 12000 Gold or anything in between or below, but, historically, chart intercept always happened in 20th century (on multiple occasions).

Maybe we should predict a similar intercept for the Dow/bitcoin price  Grin

You forgot to include one CRUCIAL ingredient in your Gold-Bitcoin comparison:

The 2020 Bitcoin Halving Event!

As I always say: GTCTTWW!
IOW: HoDL!
2434  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: August 10, 2019, 06:16:55 AM

I just sent 7 euro to top up my vodafon and the tx cost a little over 8 euro cents.  It was included in the next block.

And yet, the big blocker lunatics keep insisting that we should increase the block size, not gradually, by a mere few MB at a time, and as needed by current demand, but simply make it infinite, just because they think "bigger is better"... See, they want to insert movies, weather data and other weird stuff in the blockchain for some reason, forcing them to be stored and preserved forever in every network node. It's like Twitter having an unlimited post length. Just imagine what would happen to the network...

Fear not, the good thing about Bitcoin is that it's essentially (in a very broad sense), a self-regulating entity that adapts to its environment. It's a Darwinian "survival of the fittest" case. Those mutated, deformed, unfit coin monstrosities will eventually die off, and only the fittest will survive.

Details of the OLED Vulnerability and its Mitigation

Quote
This article describes an information leak discovered in the OLED display used by hardware wallets, including Trezor One. We want to explain how this side-channel attack works and what measurements we took to mitigate the threat. This attack affects only the Trezor One; Trezor Model T is immune to this attack thanks to its entirely different display.

https://blog.trezor.io/details-of-the-oled-vulnerability-and-its-mitigation-d331c4e2001a

Very smart!

Ledger too.

Quote
Like many hardware wallets, the Ledger Nano S and Ledger Nano X include an OLED screen to display sensitive information. In the case of Ledger’s products, the following information is displayed on the screen:
  • The confidential recovery phrase during the setup,
  • The PIN code entered to unlock the device.
As this information is confidential, we always recommend our users to operate their devices in a secure environment. In an unsafe place, someone could eavesdrop and gain access to critical information, and thus to your crypto assets.

Read more here: OLED screen (minor) vulnerability

Thanks.

I really enjoy reading about such vulnerabilities, not only in order to take the necessary measures to protect myself (f/w updates, etc.), but also to admire the efforts of the hackers (well, the researcher in this case), for their ingenuity and cleverness. I'm an electronics engineer and I'm absolutely in love with my work. I can imagine the excitement that Christian Reitter felt when he saw those patterns on the oscilloscope's screen.

I think TREZOR's countermeasures are better than Ledger's. TREZOR's solution totally equalizes power consumption between different seed words, but sacrifices looks, while Ledger's maintains good looks, but sacrifices a little bit on security (screen content can theoretically still be inferred by power consumption patterns, but the process is now much more difficult).

tl;dr: Treat your TEZORs/Ledgers as physical wallets (like the one in your pocket carrying your fiat). Don't assume you are fully secure by using them. You can't begin to imagine what a good hacker can do once your device is in his/her hands...

Edit: Check out the following related story. Long, but well worth the read. Hats off to the hacker!

/tinfoil hat on

It seems somebody is buying large chunks of corn, then sending corn abroad and selling on the other side.

/tinfoil hat off

It's pAmping again...

If what you're saying is true, it makes it so tempting to sell at the top of the Bart and wait for the dump to rebuy more corn...

Will I do it? Probably not. Why? 1. I'm a hardcore HoDLer. 2. I'm very unlucky in trading, when I sell at the top of the Bart, it will turn out to be the bottom of the mega-FOMO rise we are all waiting for...

tl;dr: HoDL.

The ‘Vault’ Is Back: Coder Revives Plan to Shield Bitcoin Wallets from Theft

Quote
Basically, someone holding bitcoin primarily as a store of value could put it in cold storage, or hold it offline, with code that says it can be spent, but not immediately. The owner could set some pre-determined time delay on any attempt to move the coins. The fact that it has a built-in delay would give a true owner time to reverse a transaction if their private information had been compromised and someone tried to steal their crypto.

Quote
Malte Möser, Ittay Eyal, and Emin Gün Sirer proposed this feature, known as “vaults,” as a way to better secure bitcoin in 2016, but their proposal required a fork of the protocol codebase. That fork never happened.

But on Wednesday, Bitcoin Core contributor and crypto consultant Bryan Bishop sent out a design to developers to accomplish the same thing using existing code.

https://www.coindesk.com/the-vault-is-back-bitcoin-coder-to-revive-plan-to-shield-wallets-from-theft

I like this.

Especially since it does not require a fork to be implemented.

The Art of BTC HoDLing

  • The Art of BTC HoDLing is acquired through years of patience, deep understanding of the tech, and a firm belief in what BTC can do and how it can change the world for the better.

  • You know that you have mastered the Art of BTC HoDLing when you are not worried at all when a dump occurs. You just smile because you are trained to expect them, and know what's to come.

  • You know that you have mastered the Art of BTC HoDLing when you are not overly happy when a pump occurs. What's a 50% rise in BTC value? Nothing! Can it be compared with your current gain of xxxx%? Absolutely not! You just smile and save the real excitement for when BTC = $100k ~ $1m (10x ~ 100x, depending on your wants and needs).

  • You don't check the BTC/$ price as often as you used to.

  • When you see/hear the word HoDL, you immediately think of Guinness and their famous tagline: "good things come to those who wait".

  • You don't ever dare buy pizza with BTC, because you know the consequences and won't be able to live with yourself.

  • You know who Carolina is, and what instrument she plays.

Have fun WO brothers!

I'd like to contribute to this wonderful encyclopaedia of HODL  Grin

  • You easily identify beatrolls and you are immune to their FUD and BS.

Good suggestion.

I treat a select few beartrolls as entertainment material. WO wouldn't be the same without them. They know who they are.
