Hello mining community,

I would like to ask for some help. Recently bought a mining rig 6x RX 480

I am using Biostar TB85 motherboard, 12 GB RAM, EVGA 1300w, 120ssd, intel celeron 2x2.8GHz, windows 10 64.


I have this problem. On minute after I start claymore miner hashrate on one card drop to 0 and I get report - GPU hangs in opencl call - Need to restart miner.

I am searching for solution for couple of days already.

- I tried different GPU drivers, if I try to install 17.3 or 17.4 crimson computer crash.

- Virtual memory is on 16GB.

- If I start a miner without this card which lost hashrate then same thing happen to other 5 cards, hashrate drop to 0 on all 5 cards.

- I reinstall windows and all drivers, still same issue

- I switch cables and cards, nothing positive happen.

- tried other miners, pools, old version of claymore miner..

- tried function -gser -eser

Tried probly everything i could find on google, still no solution. Not sure if that is specific problem of motherboard, graphic card? other parts are more or less standard mining parts and probly have nothing to do with that problem.

Hop someone can help or give any proposition what should I do or try.

It is because you did not set your virtual memory. Go into system, advanced settings and change virtual memory to 16000MB like the program tells you to do if you are mining on multiple cards. If you don't do that you get the Open CL hang error, the miner tries to restarts and it just hangs.

I think I have identified a problem in the API output of the miner. When I'm running it on my system where I have one AMD and one nVidia card, I get the following temperature and fan reading from the API:
"79;4772;59"
The expected output should be on the format GPU#0 Temp; GPU#0 Fan; GPU#1 Temp; GPU#1 Fan
"79;47;72;59"
The result is that Awesome Miner doesn't display the correct temperature and fan information when mining.

I'll check it and fix in next update if I can confirm it.

Claymore - When "s" is pressed for information can you add shares found per GPU? I know it doesn't really matter but I think it would be interesting to see if one is finding more shares than the other over time.

Yes it is almost useless info. But ok I will add it in next update.

I haven't seen this problem for 2 days now. (But ofcourse I'm not watching 24/7)
All I did was unplug my second screen.
Tried playing around with the oc and the downvolt yesterday, sadly I will need to read into modding my card. I'm using https://forum.ethereum.org/discussion/10382/boysies-31mh-rom-for-rx480-red-devil-v2 right now.
To adjust the Mem Clock I need to modify the bios. I tried and my hashrate dropped from 30 to 27 and I couldnt reach 100% mem load anymore.
Increasing the voltage didnt seem to change anything, but I only watched it for a short time.
My dcri is at 30 and I get the best results there. Mem Load is nearly all the time at 100%

Ok. I got cocky to early. Now with 9.3 the same problem comes from time to time and 100% randomly I'd say. Log doesnt change at all.
Maybe my Red Devil is really oc'd to much?
Its now at core 1180/975 and mem 2200/975 with +50% power lim

Since there someone mentioned a opencl problem, is there a way to add it manually? I'm using amd's 16.11.5 and assumed it is included in this drivers?

I use 1160/920 and mem 2140/920 with dcri 32 on DCR ovb using my same bios. I get 29.4/942. I use claymore to set the clocks/mem/power no powerlimit increase needed, I use awesome miner to give me live conversion to $ and this setting give me the best $. all my Red devils are the same but your millage may vary

You can use this to measure your power at the wall and show the costs after entering the price per kW/h.

This is all fascinating, seems that you're on the right track - a bit more learning and you'll understand how it all works.
However my point was that the EdjOne's claim is likely an absurd one.
And the same goes to you on your difficulty talk. EDIT: Meaning - it has nothing to do with the poll response time.

To reduce variables I placed the two ASUS cards in the PCI-e slots on the mobo.  Tested it and had no problems.  This ruled out any bad cards.

Placed the cards BOTH on risers (no card on the mobo directly) and it failed within a few minutes of load.   Bad risers.

Anyone have a suggestion on good quality risers?

The truth is Hawkfish, myself, and MintCell are all selling the same risers.

Typically we're running less than 1% defective rate UNLESS something happens during shipping to damage them.  Or someone gets a bad batch.  Or quality from a vendor goes downhill. Notice how none of us sell "black" risers any more. They're rubbish. The build quality went really down hill so we all quit selling them.

A few things about risers and debugging them.

You did a great job by plugging in the cards direct to the mobo to test.

I'd also suggest using another spare riser to test but most new miners don't have a spare. (or start with 1 riser and see if that works.)

Don't plug in more than 1 riser per SATA power cable.  Just because a SATA power cable has 3 or 4 ports on it doesn't mean you should plug 3 or 4 risers in.  If you do you will overload it.  A SATA connection for a harddrive uses much less power than a PCIe riser.   Many people run 2 pcie risers per cable. That may work fine for you but I suggest 1 per cable if you can. You definitely don't want to try and chain 3 or 4 risers on one SATA cable. They won't be able to get enough power.

If you have the new blue (what I call server quality risers) then they can take the 6 pin PCIe power directly.

Double check your setup. Make sure everything is connected properly. Check that you put the little 1x card in the slot properly. Check that it isn't too loose. Check your USB, SATA, power etc.  When the rig is on check by touching the cables with your hands especially your molex/sata power. Make sure it isn't hot to the touch. That is definitely a bad sign.

Depending on your setup you may also need to change some BIOS settings.  Typically your motherboard BIOS is set to AUTO PCIe settings, but sometimes you need to change this to "gen 1" or "gen 2". That also may depend on whether or not you're running Windows or Ubuntu.  Try those too.

Finally, do you have enough power to run everything? Your PSU should run only at 80-90% capacity. Meaning if you have a 850 watt power supply you really want to run at 700-750 watts. You don't want to try and push it to 850 or 900 like some people do. That may work short term but won't work long term. Also if you're at say 820 solo mining and suddenly switch to dual mining... or make the intensity a lot higher... you can overload a power supply that ran fine for a long time.

A lot of people test their power with software tools that don't properly show the actual watt usage of the entire PC. I recommend using a kilowatt meter or amp meter. You plug the rig into this and plug this into the wall. Then you can tell the actual amount of power draw at the wall. Otherwise you're just guessing!  Right now my GPUz says this 280x on this computer is using 44 watts but I know in reality it's probably closer to 200watts. Just for the GPU. Not counting everything else in the computer drawing power.

Don't get me wrong. Bad risers do happen. But there is a lot of testing you can do before you get a replacement riser.

Yes, I would like to have that function too. Or number of shares in an hour, like GPU0 (or whole total rig sum)  20 shares / hour. Some pools does not show number of stale shares and the only way to count it is to get number of shares per last hour and compare it with pool report.

Miner v9.3

I have been using this miner for about 24 hours. I upgraded from 9.2.

I have 2 RX 480 with 8GB RAM. My issue is that over the past 24 hours my effective hash rate dropped 15 to 20% despite the fact that the reported hashrate is higher. What gives here?

I am using the ethermine.org pool.

Until this is fixed I am going back to v9.2

Setting up my rig.  This worked yesterday for a 36 hour run

      - MSI Z170A Gaming M7
      - 1x Sapphire Nitro (no plus) 8G RX480  (rookie mistake slower memory)
      - 1x Asus Dual RX 480 8G
          BOTH GPUs mounted on mobo
      - windows 7 64bit
      - Claymore v 9.3

Ran great.  Just going for stability, not speed yet.  Both cards hashed around 24-25Mh/s

Today the risers arrived. (MintCell v006)

Moved the the ASUS DUAL card to the riser.  Added a second ASUS DUAL card with riser.  Sapphire remained on mobo in PCIe slot.

Started Claymore.  All cards hashing about 24-25Mh/s

After 3 minutes of mining ATI driver crash.  One mining card stops mining.

Reboot.  Same behavior.

Read the forums.  Tried to back off to the suggested v15.2 driver, but it would not run with my RX 480.  Settled on driver 16.11.5

Ran the rig with the Sapphire mounted in case and only 1 ASUS on riser.   This was stable.

Any ideas?  I have swapped risers to no avail.  I can run 2 cards stable, but adding the third causes a crash a few minutes into mining.

At the time of the crashes no cards are running super hot.  (60-70 C)

The powered risers are usually good.

I have bought 240 risers and had 2 bad in the bunch.  I have bought half of them from MintCell with no issues.  If your board has a Gen1 or Gen2 setting, try that, and make sure you turn off the PCIe power saver feature under your power options.

I've been using version 4.3 until recently upgraded to 9.3

Under the same settings, 4.3 works perfectly fine, but when running 9.3, artifacts starts to appear. Solo eth mining does not affect anything but I'm doing dual mining all along..

Are there anyways to fix that?

I didn't see if anyone posted a reply, but, as someone who is still running 380's here is my advice:

1) 380's run the best and are the most stable running 8.0 or 8.1 solo mining ETH. If you are dual mining then use 9.3

2) Save power by running these cards at around 800/1500. Experiment with undervolting.

3) For myself, the best dcri setting for these cards is around 20.

The R9 380(x) is a boring but very steady card. This card should run for weeks between power outages.
