I have a dedicated VPS node running bitcoind and p2pool and getting 5.8% DOA on local rate on 150Gh/s. Everything running smooth and am now awaiting my first p2pool block.
what company are you using and how much is it? I was considering the same thing and I couldn't find anything that had enough disk space for the entire btc chain w/o paying a bit more. M Yeah... Had to go with the second smallest droplet at Digital Ocean, where I already have droplets for other projects. I first tried to piggy-back on an existing system but decided afterwards that I wanted a dedicated note to improve performance. Less than ideal financially, but I really wanted to try out p2pool for a bit.

Hey.. I've opened a bitcoin node in Portugal and hopefully I'll be able to drag some hashpower to the p2pool network. http://176.111.106.65:9332Please feel free to help me improve this node!

M At risk of sounding like a shill ... Check out CrownCloud.net: https://crowncloud.net/clients/cart.phpThey have two VPS offers that are frequently sold out, but are spectacular for P2Pool. Look for "OpenVZ-3072-Yearly" under "OpenVZ - Los Angeles" and "OpenVZ-3072-Yearly-DE" under "OpenVZ - Frankfurt". Both are 3GB RAM, 50GB HDD, 8 virtual cores. Both are $15 for 6 months or $30 annually. Even better, CrownCloud both explicitly supports Bitcoin nodes (though not cloud mining) in their TOS, AND takes payment in BTC. Like I said, both are usually sold out. I was able to nab one by following them on Twitter and snapping one up as soon as they announced availability. I've used other providers as well, but the headache of explaining to them the difference between a bitcoin/P2Pool node and bitcoin cloud mining makes it not worth the hassle.

so.. my local node is working great. I'm above average on stale rate, my estimated payout is quite larger than "ideal payout"..
now if we could just get one of those things that start with a b... and is 5 letters long.

difficulty keeps increasing. I think faster than the pool hash. looks like people are bailing, so variance is going to get worse. will make it easier to get shares though. M

It's my fault. I mentioned that the hash rate was up and we should expect fewer of these long rounds. I forgot the most important rule about luck which is you never talk about not having bad luck.

M Actually we've been growing faster than difficulty for the past 1-2 months, and it hasn't increased yet this time (1-2 more days). Just bad luck is all there is to it. People bailing is likely true and unfortunate, but unavoidable.

The first rule of luck is that we do not talk about luck.

I know its been a long wait, but now it should only take about one more day to get a block. Just FYI.

My calculations agree, we've got about 1 day to go! Ask me again in 12 hours and I'll tell ya the same

Expect 1.2 days (as the web page says ) Past mining doesn't effect when you will find a block ...
