So BKK took the money and ran? I know TH gave him a payout.
It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

This whole situation sucks, really. I think we will all be better off once these ASIC "birth pangs" pass. Everyone is getting ripped off. Crazy that BKK would put so much into that design and then just split.

People would do well to actually read the OP and all the updates so far. SB isn't entertaining Avalon batch 2, he's evaluating other "next gen" chips.

As I read it, he does not specify whether the "next gen" chips used would be from Avalon or not.

Next gen:
We have been working towards solidifying the redesign using next gen chips, and are cautiously optimistic. We cannot release any details at this time.

I will say for the record, that if the next gen design uses Avalon (next gen) chips, that greatly reduces my interest, and I'll probably pass. Using another vendor's chips (possibly with an adapter) is probably less likely to be technically feasible, but it's the only way I'd be interested, since I don't want to support Avalon anymore.

For those posting that they've gotten their refunds, would you mind posting when you requested the refund? Might be a useful nugget of info for those waiting for refunds...

I have not yet received refunds, for refund requests submitted on Sat 9/14.

(One of two was resubmitted on Sun 9/15, due to lack of confirmation in the browser window the first time. Possibly a browser issue.)

Read between the lines. Next gen avalon won't be available for several months and *supposedly* is pin-compatible, not requiring a redesign, then SB says this:

Quote
The most cost effective and efficient way to recover the nonrefundable losses sustained is to reuse as much of the materials purchased as possible in a board redesign using a more efficient chip. We are currently evaluating the possibility of a board level redesign using the same form factor which will allow us to reuse the majority of the current design’s accessory components, and likely portions of the board level components. While we have been contacted regarding this possibility by a promising engineering team, research on the viability of a redesign is still in its infancy, and there are no guarantees it of our success. That being said, it is in our best interest to produce a competitive product which reuses the existing stock as quickly as possible, and we will be devoting all available resources to do so.

In the event we are successful in redesigning the board, and can negotiate a fair and competitive price for the chips to be used with a verifiable delivery date, all customers who purchased assembly will be credited the full value of the components reused in producing the new units, in addition to a heavily discounted rate for the balance. We do not currently have any information regarding the final cost of the redesigned unit, which manufacturer’s chip the design will be based on, performance data, or availability at this time.

This will NOT be Avalon gen. 2.

Just to make it a little more succinct.  Emphasis mine.

my request was put in 9/12 and I haven't heard squat about chips/miner/assembly/freight, or even if my request was received.

Please post the date you requested your refund, so the rest of us have another data point to try to figure out how far into the refund queue has been processed.

(Obviously it would be better if steamboat would just tell us...)

With no "acceptance" email or any kind of acknowledgement that my receipt was recorded, I can't remember what day I requested it.  Hence the lack of inclusion of my refund date in the post.  However, I can say it was before I posted on the 11th that I had requested one.  So probably Sep 10th, and I received a refund yesterday.

Yifu said he wouldn't do pre-orders any more, so theoretically escrow won't be necessary.

Escrow is necessary. He should get a percentage, or preferably nothing, until the chips are in the buyer's hands.

He has *zero* credibility in the realm of timely delivery.

My refund request was re-submitted on, I believe, 9/11, I too have not heard or seen anything since.

As stated in my email, chip refund request sent for 904 chips from batch4.

I'm keeping the rest of the funds with LSD, I want to see what SB comes up with as an alternative to the "gen1 Avalon"-based K16.
