^^^ This is a good move. But I want them to try for the Olympics as well. If they really want to make cricket a truly global sport, then inclusion in the Olympics is the only option. Else cricket will remain restricted to the Commonwealth and among the expat community. Also, the eligibility rules must be made similar to that in other sports. It is really strange to see teams such as the UAE and Qatar fielding playing XIs which comprised entirely of citizens form India and Pakistan. How can foreign citizens represent another country?

It has been claimed many times that cricket should be included in the Olympics. But it is not being done. Many peoples believe that the inclusion of the Cricket in Olympics, some cricket boards like India and England will lose their influence over the ICC. So the big boards don't want cricket to be included in the Olympics.

The biggest obstacle used to be BCCI. But now they have received assurance from the government that BCCI would not come under the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), even if the sport is included in the Olympics. Another issue was that previously BCCI was controlled by the Srinivasan- Sharad Pawar gang. They were opposed to the inclusion, because the monetary returns for ICC/BCCI was low. But the current leadership under Ganguly has taken a much more favorable view regarding this subject. Even if cricket is included in the Olympics, it will not make much difference for the test nations. But for associate nations such as Netherlands, China and Japan, that means millions of USD worth of funding from the government.

Cricket is limited to a few countries. Adding cricket to the Olympics will give almost everyone in the world a chance to learn about cricket, and they will become interested in cricket. Which is good for the future of cricket. Hopefully the ICC will take the necessary steps in this regard.

Agreed. Olympic sports are always held in high regard by everyone. Take the case of football. Actually they don't need the Olympics to popularize the sport. Because football is being played in every nook and corner of the globe. But still, FIFA has made sure that football remains as an Olympic sport. They always look for the long term benefit. If cricket becomes an Olympic sport, then definitely sports-crazy countries such as China, Japan, South Korea and the US are going to take note. Because for them, an Olympic medal is priceless. --------------------------------------- BTW, anyone watched the Netherlands vs Ireland ODI today? It was a cracker of a match and in the end Netherlands won by 1 run. I paid ₹399 for annual subscription of FanCode, to watch this match.

~ If cricket becomes an Olympic sport, then definitely sports-crazy countries such as China, Japan, South Korea and the US are going to take note. Because for them, an Olympic medal is priceless. That is the expectation that more countries will emphasis on cricket if it is an Olympic sport but the problems i am hearing for a long time is that the ICC was not interested in including cricket in the Olympics because they do not have any incentives. BTW, anyone watched the Netherlands vs Ireland ODI today? It was a cracker of a match and in the end Netherlands won by 1 run. I paid ₹399 for annual subscription of FanCode, to watch this match. Glad that i did not place a bet on this match because i would have placed my bet on Ireland to win because they have some solid players who will perform once in a while but i have not heard about Netherlands playing outstanding cricket in recent memory. With the subscription will we be able to view all the matches and is it available globally?.

With the subscription will we be able to view all the matches and is it available globally?.
First you need to check the availability of FanCode. Why don't you install the app and check which matches are available in your country? The App itself is free and some of the matches can be watched without a payment. But you need a paid subscription (around $5.50 per year in India), if you want to watch most of the matches live in HD. Initially I went with the free option, but later decided to subscribe. Because they always have a lot of options available for watching live cricket. For example, this week they are covering the Spice Isle T10 (Grenada), ECS Germany T10 and the Netherlands tour of Ireland.

There was a chance to apply for Olympic inclusion, but the ICC refused to do that for the 2028 Olympics. The next opportunity would come at 2032. It is very unfortunate. Actually it was Jagmohan Dalmiya who first attempted to get cricket included in the Olympic Games. He was aiming for the 2012 Olympics, but before he could achieve his objective he was thrown out as the ICC president. After that for almost 15 years the ICC and BCCI was under the control of the mafia. Two precious decades have been lost and in terms of popularity cricket has lost out to smaller sports such as hockey and rugby in the meantime.

Furthermore I don’t really see the need for cricket to be part of Olympics, because it has fans all over the world now, hence I feel ICC won’t prioritise it ever.

The big cricket boards like indian or English, will definitely want to maintain their dominance over cricket. But if cricket is played on a platform like the Olympics, people all over the world will get to know cricket better and become more interested about this game. If the teams had the opportunity to participate in the Olympics without joining the country's Olympic Association, the boards might have become interested tojoin in the Olympic game.

The third and final match of the Netherlands vs Ireland ODI series will be played tomorrow. Both the teams have one win each, and the winner of the third match will win the series. Don't forget that this match is a part of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League. For each match, the winner will be receiving 10 points. Ireland is currently at the 9th place with 20 points from 8 matches, while Netherlands is just behind with 10 points from two matches. Ireland will be taking on South Africa next month, while Netherlands will be facing South Africa in September.

That is a dream I guess, I have not head anything now. There were some news about adding cricket in Olympics last year. If it happens it will be in next Olympic. ICC and other powerful board must support this cause. If it gets added then many countries will start adopting cricket.
@Vishnu.Reang I doubt we’ll ever see cricket in Olympics, because the big teams will not allow their revenues to be split by participating in Olympics. Furthermore I don’t really see the need for cricket to be part of Olympics, because it has fans all over the world now, hence I feel ICC won’t prioritise it ever. The big boards will never want to include cricket in the Olympics. Because of this, the Olympic Association of each country will try to exercise its power over the cricket team. And at some point cricket boards will become almost inactive. Boards like England, South Africa and Australia will never want cricket to participate in the Olympics. Your point of view is right. Olympics will bring more exposure to cricket than any other event. Every cricket board would also benefits as it will bring in more revenue from the sponsors. I do not see the point why these big boards will not allow cricket to be added to Olympics, they know such exposure would help them in the future. Interference from the Olympics association will be once in 4 years, the rest of the time these boards will be controlling the games.

In case of the BCCI, they have already received assurance from the government that even of cricket is included in the Olympics, there will be no interference from the Indian Olympic Association. I guess the situation will be same with the other boards as well. And regarding the second part of your post, larger boards such as the BCCI will hardly see any financial benefit. The Indian government is not going to allocate any extra funding for them. The benefits will be limited to the smaller boards.

They will get the sponsors if the people gravitate towards cricket and including cricket in the Olympics is the first step and then it might take over a decade for it to attract the fans, so it is going to be a long process. The reason Indian cricket is rich with huge sponsors is because they have a huge population who follow the matches and it is a huge marketing opportunity for the sponsors and when other countries reach that level that they can also reap the same benefits.

There is a reason why the most popular sport in the world (Football) is a part of the Olympics. FIFA could easily say that the football world cup is more popular than the Olympics and therefore they don't want to participate. But they have never raised any such objections. On the other hand, they have actually encouraged teams to participate in the Olympic Games. Some of the best footballers in the world have taken part in the Olympic Games. In the end, FIFA realizes that it is an ideal opportunity to grow the sport. The thinking from the ICC is different. For them, there is no need to make cricket more popular.

The reason might be the powerful cricket boards are not willing to send the players to the Olympics, the ODI and Test format are simply not possible but the T20 version is the perfect one to be played in the Olympics and it is over a decade we are conducting the T20 World Cup and it is time that they involve cricket in the biggest stage of all time.
