I'm sorry I didn't know about this project since its appearance. I recently learned from a colleague, and this week I will be fully validated after the 3rd round. More and more people want invitations and sign up for this wonderful project because they are aware of its quality and know that it will be a future project.

Shout-out to reb0rn who gave me info about the project. When I first got into Idena, it was late December... I was fascinated by the idea and how stuff works. Since it was early start, I was few months late but there were not that many users in. Still there are not. I tried to learn/read everything there was about Idena. This thread, Telegram channel from beginning, Discord from beginning.

Since then I've been trying to troubleshoot problems and help users here and there. As I ran into problems, I tried to find a way to solve them as best as I could. As my job is primarily helpdesk/tech support, I find myself with this project as at home...

First thing, how to run stable mining... Built-in node (on Windows) was failing at a random times, it felt like I needed to babysit it.
So I made a script that checks its online presence by checking Idena explorer and sends you an email if node is offline. I thought to myself, well this is usefull, as I read other people were having same issues as well. So I redid script so it can check multiple addresses at a time.
Then when the list of users/addresses and demand grew I figured, I can't add them manualy any more... I must build interface so people can register and setup stuff themselves.
Also after every validation, I had to manually go through addresses list to check if those addresses are still able to mine, Is there a need to check them. That was also troublesome. But eventualy I got time to build it and automate it. So now it runs independently.

From that need, it grew into something that I now call a Portal...

So feel free to check out unnoffical Idena Portal, one stop place for additional FAQ's, tutorials and other usefull information.
https://idena.site

Feel free to register an account which enables you to setup:
- Mining monitoring (notifies you by email if your node goes offline)
- Financial card (gives you an estimate of your current DNA holdings)
(more is planned, just need to find time to make it)

Latest addition is video tutorial that shows you how to run your node automatically in background on Windows, using Task Scheduler, it's step by step tutorial and I hope it will help out
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXzweeyCaQ0

This setup has many advantages:
- Node runs/mines in background
- Idena client/app does not have to be turned on, all the time
- Mining is more stable than running Built-in node and has autorestart feature
- If your PC restarts or updates, node starts automatically by itself
- You don't have to be logged in in order for node to run

Only disadvantage of running node as a background task is a bit complicated node update procedure:
- Stop node task
- Switch to built in node from App settings
- Update node by clicking update button in App
- Switch to remote node in App settings
- Run task again

Any of you know what the actual mining reward calculation mechanism looks like? I noticed the day after the last validation that the value of the coins increase from mining on my account was a few lower than on my wife's account - I was surprised because both nodes are  on VPS (admittedly two different ones) but I was convinced that the increase regardless of connection will be the same calculated directly from the formula daily (block) reward divided by the number of active minerals.
So daily Mining cap per day: 25,920 DNA divided by the number of active miners currently 791 so 32.76 coins a day ...

Concerned that maybe something is wrong with the second node I was watching accounts the next day and surprisingly this time on the second (my) 10% more coins ... Huh Shocked

So I decided to do a little more measurement and in addition to our two newbie accounts I added observations of the first account on the list with the status of human ...
After 4 days and 17 measurements I am amazed ... theoretically the general growth trend coincides although my personal account won a bit with both - my wife's and this random human indentity...

But I was much more surprised by the average increase per hour at individual stages of measurement, it is logical that it will not be constant because the number of miners varies over time, but how it happens that one account increases by up to 400% more than another - I can't get it....

So maybe any of you could explain how the Idena's mining algorithm divides coins between miners

My next planned step is to implement mining log for nodes that are monitored over my portal. That way, we will have bigger sample to compare. The answer is probbably somewhere in the code on github Cheesy

Mining involves competition between nodes and who gets the block published/verified by the network first.

Sometimes you're always the winner for many blocks. Sometimes you fall behind. Such is the way mining works.

All network variables affect mining, in any cryptocoin.

So you are saying that the "miners" which are not miners act like real miners?
I thought the amount of Idena coins allocated per day are divided equally to all nodes running, of course if the nodes are online 24h.

To Buy, or not to Sell? That is the question.

If so i'm wonder which variable affect mining most i know that cpu doesn't matter a lot while i was mining on 10th years laptop, probably network speed etc.

Or it also maybe that mining work isn't affected by technical circumstances at all and finding block it's simple random....

If your internet connection is awful you might miss some blocks what may affect mining speed but this is not an issue in this case in my opinion. I think its pure random. As you can see at the beginning human was faster by up to 70% and at the end was the slowest. I think that if you will run it for longer it will switch places once again and this 10% difference will shrink significantly

Well, I agree with Tytanowy Janusz. At the end of the day everyone will get the same rewards if the nodes are up 100% and have the same internet speed.

@cryptovigi try to make an analysis on a full cycle (9 days) from start to end, and see what are the results. 4 days may not be conclusive.

Additionally, apart from the same internet speed/connection you'll need to make a comparison, the node up time must be exactly the same, if a node is stopped longer than other ( i.e. for a node update, a VPS server update), you may end up with different rewards.

There is a really small chance to actually catch up with all the blocks. There can be also a delay between connection of peers, no matter how fast your internet is, it also matters how fast their internet is.

Overall rewards can't be more down than 12% with a decent connection vs the real distribuited number. I ran some maths myself so that's the lowest it can go.

Thanks for the reminder @notblox1!
Even if I think old users have a reminder and knows very well when the next validation is, this is very good to know for newcomers/newbies to avoid missing it and waste the invites of others.

Just out of curiosity...

If I issue/give an invite to someone and he/she activate it, if I decide to delete him/her would my invite participate in the Lottery-based rewards for non-spent invitations or I shouldn't mine it (the invitation code) in the first place?

I think that you should not issue invitation at all (or kill already issued/minted) to receive this reward. Invitation that was issued and not used before validation have "not activated" status, not "non-spent" - not sure if i'm right but this logic seems convincing at least to me.

Just out of curiosity...

If I issue/give an invite to someone and he/she activate it, if I decide to delete him/her would my invite participate in the Lottery-based rewards for non-spent invitations or I shouldn't mine it (the invitation code) in the first place?

It doesn't matter, if the invitation was not spend all is fine! You'll get the reward.

I will stopped giving invite now Cheesy all of them are just failing. 2 invites wasted once again this epoch.
Its better to save it and earn small rewards for unused invites that to issue it and get nothing from failed invites.

Starting March 25 hardfork all human will get 2 invites Cheesy
