As the world is mourning the loss of a young and promising footballer Diogo Jota, Africa has lost a legend. Nigeria's former goalkeeper Peter Rufai is dead. He is seen as Nigeria's best goalkeeper. I just got the flash update of this news in my browser notification. He was exceptional in the world of soccer and contributed greatly to the African cup of nations Nigeria won in 1994. He's truly a hero of the goalpost and a terror for strikers in his prime.

Rest on great goalkeeper. Your contributions to both Nigerian football and world football as a whole would always be remembered. He sadly passed away at only 61 years old

Rest in peace. I don't know the cause of death of Nigeria goalkeeper but I heard that Diego Jota died suddenly because of a tragic accident after few days from being married or engaged. It is sad for both their families, their fans and their nations.
Aside from that specific situation, African news stay generally locally or in the region, unless we are talking about big names who played in top teams..

So many people who are not in their forties or late thirties might not know who Peter Rufai is. This might be why the needs not trending.  Another reason might be that Nigerians don't have good memory,  we tend to forget easily. It could also be because the news is just breaking.

The death of Peter Rufai is not trending like that of Jota may be because of his age or the way the whole thing happened but then Peter Rufai is a legend I don't think he got the help that he deserves since he has been battling with illness I don't think he should be dead now if he has gotten more support from our Nigerian government.

Things are not done properly in this present generation if not there is no way we wouldn't be getting all the necessary information regarding well being of our legends because they paved the way for the younger generations.

This is very correct, as I remember it almost like yesterday. I also remember claiming to be keeper Rufia in one of those football games I featured in as goalkeeper. He was a remarkable shot stopper; it earned him the nickname "dodo mayana". May God rest his soul.

Talking about goalkeepers, I think Nigeria is one country that has always been blessed in that aspect. We have always had good goalkeepers, from Rufia, Enyeama, and Ike Shorunmu to now Nwabali.

I stumbled upon this sad news on Facebook this morning, and I was doubting the news wasn't true, but since you posted the same news here, it is clear the news of the death of the former Nigeria Super Eagles goalkeeper was true. My condolences to the family of the dead and the Nigeria Football Federation.

We are still mourning the death of Diego jota and another person is dieing, the legendary ex international of our super eagles, peter rufai.
After hearing of the death by Diego jota yesterday I wasn't able to function properly because I was really in a state of shock, truly life is not fair.

Someone that just got married a few days back, my sincere condolences to the family of Diego jota and that of peter rufai, may God in his infinite mercies grant them them the strength to stay strong in this most difficult times, rest in peace jota and rufai.

A lot man now did not even get to watch the legend play,  I'm including my ass, I was only fortunate to watch his videos on YouTube  years back. The game against Spain I guess, during the France world cup 1998 or something. There's nothing interwoven to the death of Jota and his brother.

It's only a person that's dead that doesn't have responsibility in this life, but we still have some folks who are rich, and they have enough money that will take care of their responsibilities, and they can still reach out to their loved ones or friends when they are in need, but they will choose not to do so, but they will send millions of naira immediately when they lose their loved one or friend so that people will see them as good people. It is better to post someone on social media when he or she is alive than to post the person on social media when he or she is dead.

A legend indeed,  not to Nigeria alone but across Africa,  his career was such that others in today modern football will want to be like him, undoubtedly his contributions to the Super eagles are memories that will never be forgotten, he's representations has forever remained memorable because of the impact made on the occasions of his appearances in various game.

I came across this on my news feed few hours after reading about Diego Jota death. It's sad seeing two legends, a striker and a goal keeper passing away the same day. I proceeded to read about Peter Rufai stats and discovered that he was a great goal keeper for super eagle that participated and won some trophies with them before his retirement. The old legend has been on a sick bed for a while now until his death yesterday.

it is not just peculiar to African news. news that flies around the globe and mainly popular news and one that people across the globe relates with. even when you check out the trend of the news regarding Diago Jota's death, people mostly talk about Diago jota alone without talking much about his brother even though they are two that died in the accident. it is just so because jota is more popular and well known compared to his brother. in the same way most popular news outlet publicized the death of Diago jota, some news outlet including Fabrizio Romano also posted about the death of peter rufia.

it is such a sad day for both the Nigerian football community, the Portugal football community, the Liverpool football community and every lover of the game of sports to see the sudden passing away of these legends. it will be a day that will take time before it goes off the memory of so many.

The problem of many African or even South American players is that once they pass from extreme poverty to being very wealthy, they lost their tracks completely and start spending like crazies, buying useless and/or costly stuff, addictions, women and other random things that destroy their carriers and make them broken.
Since there is no regular salary with cut made to social security or other assurance agencies then obviously once the player retire, he will start losing everything

Our federation has a low maintenence culture and this is not about the health alone, it's a general problem within the system of the Football federation. Peter Rufai wasn't the first to have health issues, we have had several players in the past they were neglected, some are still been own till date, this problem span throughout the Nigeria sport council and that's why I always advice this new generation of our sport stars, don't limit your careers only to Nigeria, go were you will be appreciated.

How many times has the federal government own them salaries of the current super eagles. These guys don't get appreciationa enough and it's really valid why we don't trophies. You will be surprised that many of our super eagle players don't even earn salaries, some don't care. They just want to win trophy to the nation to add to their career, they don't care if they get paid or not, what the federation does is they only provide means of transportation when necessary and we expect the federation to progress. I don't know why this week has been rendering us with sad event of a breaking news of renown players passing on, this is heartbreaking, people like me and other younger generations may not really know the time they have peak up their best time performance while playing for Nigeria, because we were young or never still be able to meet on ground some of their ground record breaking events, but the history never left them behind, today, such a hero who has been keeping for the Nation in his time passed on, the same week Jota also left this sinful world, may their respective souls rest in peace.
