We know that Jose Poseiro left upon the expiry of his contract with the Nigerian National team but if the coach was treated well he couldn't have left. He left because he wasn't getting the kind of supported he needed from the NFF, regardless that he performed greatly at the 2023 AFCON
Jose Poseiro was not sacked but he didn’t get a lot of support from the NFF nor the fans, I believe that’s why he resigned. Jose Poseiro was under a lot of heat from everyone because he could not win the AFCON,
What the hell are some of you guys even talking about, what do you mean by the manager was not treated well or that he didn't get any support from the NFF. Jose Poseiro was paid an initial $70,000 monthly, before it was reduced to $50,000 monthly, plus other bonuses, you want to tell me a manager who was earning this high was treated unfairly, are you guys joking or something. That said, you are talking about heat, which i take to mean pressure, which manager in the world isn't under pressure, Ruben Amorim at United is under pressure, Pep at City is under pressure, i can go on and on, the job of a manager comes with pressure. Sometimes i have a feeling you guys enjoy casting aspersions on the NFF for unfounded reasons. You tagged me so I’m going to respond. When I said that Jose Poseiro didn’t get a lot of support from the NFF, I wasn’t referring to his salary. I was referring to the how Nigerians blamed the manager any time the team lost a game, drawn or even won by a small goal margin. There wasn’t a lot of faith placed on Poseiro, that’s my point. True, Nigerians did not appropriate the coach, I knew of people who didn't like him not because he is bad at the job but because they felt the foreigner shouldn't be coaching the team, many requested for our local managers to be handed the duty. Right now we have experienced the worst performance from Super Eagles under the management of local coaches, we keep growing with better squads on our list but our performance are no where near what it supposed to be.

The Nigerian team will have a new midfielder shortly, to add to the quality of the team. Maybe he will be the glue that the team needs, although I do not think so because he lacks experience even playing in the Premier League. Everton midfielder Tim Iroegbunam who has played for the younger England team may become a member of our senior National side. https://owngoalnigeria.com/2025/04/09/everton-midfielder-agrees-to-meet-chelle-on-the-idea-of-playing-for-super-eagles-ahead-of-england/

Is this not why we also encourage the Super Eagle to always be at their top performance in case of anything like this, which may not have a significant effect on them if they experience point deduction through a player, South Africa is not going to feel the impact because they are already on the top of the table and this will have no any significant effect on them, this same performance speed is what we sought out from our own Nigerian Super Eagles, whereby the confidence will always be there for them to receive any challenge because they can withstand it either on the team or thier players.
In as much as it's like a big relief for our super eagles ambition of qualiifying for next year world cup, but it's saddens me that things like this must happen for we to stand a chance to qualify, how can we be so helpless to the point that we must be hoping for bad thing to happen to our major rival before we can compete and qualify with the kind of calibre of players at our disposal. It's a good news actually but can we beat the south Africans team on their own turf when we go against them in few months time? Our super eagles team seriously needs to improve and step up their game because if they had won this immediate past game against Zimbabwe, by now it would have been just a point that the south Africans team will be leading us by now, but am not that happy yet still we beat the south Africans team on their soil, that's when I will be quite confident of our qualification to the world cup next year. It's like you have forgotten that this is how it has been for the Super Eagles, expecting bad things to happen to another team so that they can use that as a motivating factor to deliver on the task ahead after they are the ones that brought themselves the messed they are facing with. Super Eagles are not the team you can give your full support to without them trying to mess things up by making you feel angry each time you remember their lapses. Come to think of it, how on earth will the Super Eagles have a draw match in their last match when they want to qualify for the World Cup? Let me ask: if the Super Eagles qualify for the World Cup, is that how they are going to disgrace Nigerians globally by being knocked out at the group stage? Because I don't think that their current performance is what will take us far, anyway.

That’s correct but as usual Nigerians have a short memory and we often rewrite history to suit our present situation. If you scroll through the thread to last year or the former thread which is now locked when Jose Poseiro was the manager of the Super Eagles, you will find that most of the comments weren’t in support of the manager. One of the main reason why there was much opposition was as you said, the fact that many felt like we needed an indigenous coach rather than a foreign manager.

Jose Poseiro still would have been good. He should have had more time.
Mind you that Jose Poseiro was not fired by the NFF. Jose Poseiro was actually offered a new contract after he led the Super Eagles to the final of the 2023 African Cup of Nations. That said, Poseiro turned down the offer and decided to leave the Super Eagles, thus you can see that it was no fault of the NFF, it was the sole decision of the Portuguese manager to go elsewhere. Jose Poseiro was not sacked but he didn’t get a lot of support from the NFF nor the fans, I believe that’s why he resigned. Jose Poseiro was under a lot of heat from everyone because he could not win the AFCON, I believe that if Poseiro had not left the Super Eagles at the time he would have been sacked by now. Lets forget about super eagles not able to win the AFCON but there overall performance when Jose Poseiro was coach wasn't bad, the super eagles games was very lively then. He was a coach that the management still needs to give sometimes to see what he can do because he has the ability of giving the team the best even if they lose the AFCON game. It was very good he resigned because he saw what would have happened if he was still with Super eagles because the NFF wasn't in support of him.

For the first time in a long time I heard someone(a public figure) speak without bias on the problem of the Super Eagle, some of you will have seen the video so you have a better understanding of the situation. We all know Nigeria lacks a clear football identity, we don’t know what style of football the team is playing. We can’t tell if it’s tiki taka (popular with Brazil) or counter attacking football (synonymous with France). There is no style of football that can be tied to Nigeria which is really bad for a team.

Every national team is made up of players who play for different clubs. Don’t you think the country football identity would determine the manager they choose to employ. For example Brazil would not hire Jose Mourinho as their manager because they know Mourinho’s defensive style of football doesn’t align with their own style. Likewise if Nigeria has established a football identity or style of play, they would hire managers either foreign or local (doesn’t matter) that fit into that criteria.

Jose peseiros departure from the Super Eagles coach position seem to be linked to the lack of support from the Nigeria football federation (NFF) and fan, as well as the pressure from not winning the Africa cup of National (AFCON), Although he wasn't directly sacked the mounting criticism likely played a role in the decision to step down after his contract expired. Given the circumstances, its plausible that peseiro might have face dismissal if he hadn't chosen to resign, considering the high expectations surrounding the Super Eagles performance.

That is normal in football, the manager cannot get 100% support from the fans, for example there are a lot of Chelsea fans who believe that Enzo Maresca is a bad coach and they want him out of the club, there were also many of them who didn't support Mauricio Pochettino, it is part of the job and not a big deal. Some Nigerians may not have supported Jose, but their views does not represent that of the entire country. I think Poseiro left basically because he wanted to take a break and try a new challenge.

That may be true, I believe coaching the Super Eagles is a very difficult task. I’m my opinion, coaching the Super Eagles is like the time Jose Mourinho was manager of Manchester United and proclaimed that finishing in the top second in the Premier League with Manchester United was his greatest achievement. There is no clear structure in the national team, just a group of individually talented players who can’t play as a team. Plus the toxicity from the fans doesn’t make the job any easier.

I don't mean to derail the conversation that is already going on here but I want think I should mention that Nigeria lost one of our renowned coaches Christian Chukwu. When I was still.in high school I remembered he was the coach for the super eagles. Unfortunately, I learned today that the NFF owed him professional debt of $128,000 since 2006 and refused to defray the debt despite persistent demands by the former coach until his death( source). I am disappointed in the NFF.

We all know Nigeria lacks a clear football identity, we don’t know what style of football the team is playing. We can’t tell if it’s tiki taka (popular with Brazil) or counter attacking football (synonymous with France). There is no style of football that can be tied to Nigeria which is really bad for a team. Nowadays it is very difficult for a national coach to adopt a style of play and play beautifully when he has players who play in many different leagues and also the leaders of the federations demand results, when they sign contracts with the coaches they set some goals such as: 1 - the national coach must qualify the team for the African Cup of Nations 2 - the national coach must qualify the team for the World Cup If the coach does not comply with these points the contract is automatically terminated. So the coach will not focus on playing well or beautifully, he will demand that the team wins, no matter what means the players must use Yes I agree with you, these players spend more time with their clubs and they play for national teams on tournaments with only just few games. It is very difficult for coaches in national teams to bring players together from different clubs who are used to respective club coach to make them play just as the national team coach wants. In national team, it is easy for a team to do well when their are players who understands football very well and when the coach is also good, their won't be problems in performance of games. Just like the Brazilian team team before now, this is a team that is well known for good performance because they have players with good talent, and it is very easy for a coach to mange a team like this.

From more articles, he was not just a coach but also captained the Nigerian AFCON winning squad in 1980 that played against Algeria with a three goals to Nil victory. The NFF said they are not getting good evidence to claim they owed him any specific amount, now he is no more, the bargain for his money goes to rot with him, received nothing while alive, and his family will still be left with no compensation (full time palava).

The NFF and other sports/athletic bodies in Nigeria stink of corruption, they do not have people who love the sport, 99% of them are there to loot the country. The problem with our system is that there is no accountability so anybody can embezzle public funds without fear of being arrested and persecuted.

Whenever I read about our players and old coaches who have fallen into dilapidated conditions and all trace to funding or debts to them it makes me sad and gives more reasons why the younger players are now more interested and serious with their foreign clubs than playing for the national team, so saddening that we most of the time see that players that come home to render service to father land when they sustain injuries during the matches, they left to treat themselves or for their foreign clubs to bear that burden of treating the injury instead for the country football body taking responsibility, this is poured corruption because the government will release money for players welfares but the egos at the top will eat up the money and feed the players with Scrubs.

He was a good man plus he played for the country in those days as a defender and served well but is unfortunate death has took him away, however 2006 is too long for someone to be refuses his pay, at least even if they were not able to clear the whole amount they should have made an attempt to pay 50 percent of it because he has retired and getting older, so that amount could have established him a lot, however I don't no the course of this that happen to him weather it was because of lack of finance, since they could not pay him when he was alive the family of Christian Chukwu should continue with NFF.

It’s really sad to hear. We don’t value our old football heroes, there is no welfare system in place for former players when they retire instead they are even looking for means to extort the players. Imagine being owed money amounting to $126,000 from 2006 till date for no good reason. Now that he has passed, it will take another twenty years for them to start looking at the family’s application to claim the money.

Last weekend Fulham won Liverpool in the Premier League where the best goal in that game was scored by Alex Iwobi a Super Eagle player. He is the only Nigerian to score 30 plus goals and 30 plus assist in the Premiere League competition. Now you see how this guys are perforning in their club side but when it comes to the international level they play the game anyhow they feel like. Honestly the level of effort they are putting in international games is not compared to what they put at their club side.
I can’t really say for certain why it happens that way. It will take a collective team effort to bring about that change. I see that the players are playing individually and not as a team and they lack that connection most times. In some games they start well but along the line they derail and lose focus before the end of the game.

All sports news sites post about the Nigerian coach death, and African football in general, and Nigerian football in particular, has lost one of its most beloved icons. Chukwu is one of the most prominent names in Nigerian football history, having led his country to its first Africa Cup of Nations title in 1980. He excelled as a defender, being named the tournament's best player. As a coach, he led Nigeria to a third-place finish in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, and having previously coached Kenya.
