http://www.coindesk.com/breaking-uk-treasury-issues-landmark-digital-currencies-report/

Quote
The United Kingdom's Treasury has published its report on digital currencies in conjunction with the Chancellor of the Exchequer's budget speech today.

The report recommends that anti-money laundering regulation be applied to digital currency exchanges in the UK and that HM Treasury will consult on the regulatory approach in Parliament.

Regulations incoming.

When I was introduced to crypto it was marketed as a way to hide money out of the system.
Now as those people start to realize it is surprisingly easy to track the owner of  the coins, they might start a massive exodus from Bitcoins to Monero. And this is going to be a bloody rise in Moneros price as the stingy Monero owners refuse to sell coins in quantities. I see this scenario even relatively probable (actually probable enough that I have invested money into xmr before the masses start to flood). The biggest threath for XMR is currently Darkcoin since it has larger marketcap and is kind of leader in our niche.

Darknote has zero volume. And noone cares about it. It wil probably have a big pump and then the a great dump and slowly die. Right now darknote has such a small hashrate, and with a block reward this small, it will stay like this. This is a security risk.

On top of that it is very illiquid, buying a considerable amount of it might be a real pain in the ass.

Darknote might be part of the cryptonote scam. Here is a good expose: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=740112.0

Beyond that, I believe monero has better development than darknote. And by better I mean two things = open (anyone can see whats going on) and ongoing. But I don't specifically follow darknote, but a glance at their bitcointalk thread shows low activity. But they might have a private forum somewhere.

why do we need it? It's our information. It should be our choice whether other people can track us and profit from us.

To your second point, there has been considerable discussion about whether anything built on the bitcoin blockchain and ever be truly private. I can't think of a link right now.

why wait for some future promise? instead we have a solution to use right now.

for 1 example, lets say i like to buy bitcoins from an ATM. an attacker can monitor the change address from the ATM, watch the blockchain for new outputs. then see me walking out of the store, and rob me.

that is just one of many reasons.

Because we need privacy, although we don't always seem to realize it. Some great posts about privacy:

I have to say that I really don't, and I think the vast majority (or at least a good number of ordinary folks) of the world doesn't. More important things to care about.

That said, I guess I can see that some people might care about such things, which does give it value. Is it enough to make monero mainstream? Only time will tell.

It's good that you can see that some see value in it. I think more and more people will see value in it. I agree and disagree with smooth at the same time. I do think that too many people are complacent, agreed. However, at the same time I think that the vast majority of people simply do not know how much spying is going on (be it from official bodies, contractors or just third party companies selling big data). Especially the latter. Very few outside the field knows this is going on. It's hardly ever covered in the mainstream media. We surmise though that it will be a larger and larger issue when people see the ramifications of it.

But let's break it apart a bit and spell it out from my rhetoricals:

- You wouldn't want your health insurance knowing your chocolate bar habits, they might raise your premium because of it. They might even refuse to take you on as a customer.
- If your boss knows your stopping your birth control, he might let you go. Maybe he doesn't want to pay for maternity leave. It would be mighty convenient to do that before you fell pregnant.
- If a merchant knows exactly what you've been willing to pay for items before he will be able to charge different prices to customers. And charge you more.
- If your government isn't friendly towards free speech (as we see governments all over the world move towards) and you hold a political opinion that is against the powers that be, your existence in life can be very troublesome. (this is such deep subject so I will not go into it more).
- If you run a little corner-shop and your customers can see what you pay for prices, they might just go straight to the source. Your competitors might be able to see it too. They can see your suppliers and the prices you pay. It's not necessarily good for your business.
- If people can see that you went to a psychiatrist, and take specific meds you could for example risk not being invited to job interviews, or have that date you were going on cancelled, or..or..
- If you were running a local diner, and customers could see that other people were getting special deals (might be your frequent patronage), they would start asking for cheaper meals - or go somewhere else.
- The last one of my previous questions spoke for itself almost. If rogue elements (be it thieves or whatever) can see when you go to the movies, on holidays, go out shopping they can arrange for a house visit at those times. But not just that - they can see WHAT you are shopping - hey you shop for nice things let's steal that..! - and plan accordingly.)

What's that old song called? "You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone.."

if you want anonymity with Bitcoin the process giving you anonymity has to be better then the blockchain analyzing techniques that are currently available as well any techniques in the future as the records on the blockchain are permanent

What is the difference between Darknote and XMR ? Is Monero better or not ? If yes, can you just explain me why. It would help me. Thanks !

Here is my opinion.

1.  It is a quark descendent hybrid POW/POS  This is not the place for a POS vs POW argument, but many greatly prefer POW for several reasons.

2. At LEAST 1,500,000 coins were mined in the first 8 hours it existed.  That is >4% total coins.  This is an instamine.  You HAVE TO do your own due diligence on this topic. Don't believe what I say, or what dark supporters say.  Go find out on your own.  If you do the work you will see that this coin was instamined, and there is no way to say where all those coins went.

3.  It uses semi centralized mixing.  The protocol uses "masternodes" which are people who have bought a certain amount of DRK (1000)  Because of this there are many vectors of attack.  Including collusion between masternodes, sybil attacks, and just plain old snooping.  Consider for example that many nodes are hosted by servers who are most certainly accessible to agencies like the NSA.

4.  The coin and it's protocol are complex, and therefore IMHO vulnerable.  The more moving parts the more places for hackery.  "Darkwave", "DarkSend", "Masternodes",  and "InstantX" make the system complex.  I prefer simple systems when features built by third parties (ex bitcoin or monero).

5.  There is recently talk of some sort of Killswitch.  I am currently researching this, but I find it disturbing.  Again due diligence.

6.  I am personally not in favor of how the dev runs this coin.  He seems autocratic and manipulative.  The original plan to deal with the instamine (allegedly) was to airdrop it to significant holders.  Ha! This looks more like selling the premine, not airdropping it.  The masternode system seems a lot like a multi level marketing sort of setup.  You *BUY* coins to get in it.  Again they seem focused on selling coins.  The recent name change is evidence of an autocratic dev (team?).  They lost a significant developer over this.  The community was (is) split over it.  But he went ahead.

In comparison Monero is more what I am personally interested in.  Built in mixing at protocol level, ring sigs, no instamine, a minimalist approach to building the protocol.  Very little hype.  Much more open, cautious, seemingly mature dev team.  Not personality driven.  The biggest complaint: "There is no official wallet" starts to reveal the true nature of the project when you watch for a while.  We are not trying to sell coins.  We are trying to build a privacy centric blockchain.  The official wallet will come in time.

For me the choice is clear.

Which of these coins wins in the end???  I don't know.  I don't really think there is room for both.  I believe Monero is the more worthy contender.  But network effect, VHS vs Beta, et al...

Go do your homework now.

Darknote vs. Darkcoin confusion. Good post nonetheless  Wink

Monero's privacy and therefore fungibility are MUCH stronger than Bitcoin's.
This makes Monero a better candidate to deserve the term "digital cash".

Anybody have any price action predictions? We've had some nice dumps the last couple of days which have caught some of my orders and asks aren't really filling in. Feels like end of last year though where there were no asks, no market buys and we were just being dumped on the whole time.

Everyone is too busy trading the new Gold Coins in CryptoKingdom to care much about the XMR price. In fact we want it to go down so we can get more XMR.
