2161  Economy / Speculation / Re: rpietila Wall Observer - the Quality TA Thread ;) on: August 13, 2014, 04:30:16 PM
Everyone and their hairdresser is now aware of bitcoin...

I ask at least one cab driver every week whether they have ever heard of bitcoin, and have done for the past year.  Keep in mind that these people are overwhelmingly recent immigrants who make regular remittances to family overseas, a first-order use case for bitcoin, which would save them as much as 10% on transfers of thousands of dollars each year.

Exactly one has ever heard of bitcoin.

Regular Joe wont go to bitcoin because of fear to be hacked. Unless one will create way to keep bitcoins safe from bad guys and easy system how to pay for goods and services, mainstreamers will stay away from BTC. Myself I'm tech guy and even I cannot sleep at night because of fear being hacked. Imagine someone not that techy, family with kids who use that computer to play games, install screensavers with all the viruses and keylogers. I dont see adoption without 100% security solution.

Fear of being hacked.  An easy to use and nearly unhackable wallet.  An easy to use and nearly unhackable means of obtaining bitcoin.  These are all still hurdles for the regular joe.  I had a 50 year old programmer co-worker on coinbase, trying to set up an account so he could start buying BTC.  The process was long enough and complicated enough that he got bored and put his money he was going to buy BTC with into a semi-legal online poker site.  Yes, he wasn't the guy that was going to send us to tha moon, but if someone who is technical can't figure out one of the currently easiest means of getting BTC, a non-technical person still has no shot.  Those things need to come out from the companies doing that work, and then we will see greater adoption rates.

Yes secure and easy use is a key for wide spread use.  I don't think average joe is even at the point of worrying about being hacked.

As far as coinbase guy, it's a simple process so I have no idea what's really going on.  And he put money on an online poker site?  There are hoops to both processes.  You should tell him about btc poker, Seals With Clubs, as getting money off poker sites is much more difficult than putting it on unless it is btc.  There also is a well know sportsbook with poker that has btc in limited beta.
2162  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to keep your bitcoins secure if you suddenly disappear (jail or prison) on: August 13, 2014, 07:48:30 AM
So this is only a problem for red blooded white men?

As how to safely store btc has been discussed many times.  I don't think that is actually what's being asked here.

What about if when you die?  I'm all set.  No matter what happens to me my btc lives on.
2163  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Now you can use Bitcoin to pay for your hotel in Vegas on: August 13, 2014, 06:45:31 AM
Ha, wow, yeah I guess Bitcoin and Vegas do fit pretty well! I mean a payment system that can be used anonymously? A city full of 'sin', money, and adventures? It'll be interesting to see whether they'll adopt Bitcoin for gambling, as well. But I doubt that as of now...

It's cute that people still think that btc is anonymous.

I have met exactly zero people that have heard of bitcoin.  Granted, I don't get out much.  But it still brings home just how early this is in the adoption phase.  Crazy.  I will be financially set free before the overwhelming majority of people catch on, and yet I thought I was somewhat late to the party.  Amazing times ahead!

The only people I find that have heard of btc are people in finance.  This month I met a lawyer/cpa who although he knew of btc, his reaction made it clear he didn't understand and/or have interest in it.

I'm trying to convince a friend to buy some btc and I recently met with their certified financial planner as I'm nobody.  Although the cfp had heard of btc he didn't know much about it.  I emailed some info and links before we met but he hadn't been able to follow the links as his home internet was down.  We spoke for 1/2 an hour and although it was a lot to take in he seemed to understand the basics and asked VERY GOOD questions.  When I left he was looking forward to learning more.  He basically does the same thing day in and day out which leads to boredom and now he has something new and exciting to stimulate his mind.  I'll see what happens when he gets back from vacation.

Ok my no memory is confirmed, TY.  So is there any point in requesting if you have less than 50 posts or should you just wait till the following month when you have reached the minimum?  I probably won't have 50 posts this month.
2166  Economy / Services / Re: [PrimeDice] [Highest Paid Signature] Earn Bitcoins Simply By Posting on: August 13, 2014, 12:56:51 AM
jump4ever and TwinWinNerD, thank you very much.

I will claim 61 posts (of course excluding the posts that i made in this thread).

Also a big thank you to Stunna for this opportunity to earn a few coins, i am really excited to get my first "paycheck" in bitcoins - haha. Smiley

@Monbux, yes i know. But i assume that the 17th is only the day, when you get the payment. You get the equivalent btc amount to your posts that you claimed when you filled the payout form. I could make a few more posts until the 17th but i don't really care that much. Is this correct, or is it only possible to claim a payout on the 17th?

Greetings Wex
The best thing to do is to claim on the 17th itself and you can count the extra posts you made in those days to the 61 posts you already had.

It was my understanding that you don't get paid for less than 400 posts.  If that is correct, what is the point in requesting?
It is also my understanding that posts roll over to the next month if the total is less than 400.  Is that correct?
No way I'm posting 400 times in a month.

Do you realize that the New Horizons spacecraft will reach it's closest approach to Pluto on July 14 of next year?  It was launched years before btc.

In other news I have finished my buying of Monero.  No this time I mean it.  Now I wait patiently for it's completion.
2168  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Monero (XMR) Speculation thread on: August 12, 2014, 10:04:18 PM

Interesting.  I'd say it's a sad sign for you to spend so much time here instead of some other thread.  Self-definition by negation is a tough way to live.

I'd say we're all sad for sitting around here wasting our precious lifetimes arguing about literally nothing. Does it really matter what thread you are wasting your precious, God-given lifetime in?

Some questions are just too dumb to be addressed.

You're a fucking idiot.

Priceless Smiley

When I start CPU miner with i5-3350p have just only 75 h/s. I changed threads from 1 to 4, always same??? What is the problem???

edit: now have 120 h/s, hope it is ok now?

I didn't try 1 or 4 threads but did try 2 and 3 threads with an i5-3450 with 3 threads being slightly faster.  Windows 7

Legendary is a brand new title, I guess there were too many heroes.  The following was written by theymos.

To make things more fun, the Legendary membergroup has no universal activity requirement. You are guaranteed to become Legendary somewhere between 775 and 1030 activity, but the exact point in this range at which you become Legendary is random per user.

Must be on your end as I see him as ignored and has been since he first got here.

@othe you are losing your time discussing with this troll (Brilliantrocket), I did the same mistake on the rpietila altcoin thread, this troll just keeps repeating the same thing again and again, he is a troll or a completely retarded.
Well, someone who is "completely retarded" has made better gains than you'll ever see in your life. And in the end that's what it all comes down to. I started posting on page 35 of the 2600 page Darkcoin thread. Let's just say, my life has never been better Smiley

Brilliantrocket,
What you're posts have done is generate some very well thought out and illuminating responses that will inform all about the current state as well as the potential of Monero.  I thank you for that.  I started investing in Monero before I fully understood it.  The more I learned the more I invested.  The other thing that is impressive is the way the devs and those close to Monero's development respond.  The later is most important because it leads me to believe that Monero's potential will be realized.  You don't have this belief and are waiting for more proof.  That is fine and perfectly understandable.

If you want to understand bloat I would recommend reading the recent discussion in rpietila's alt thread.

Was wondering why my pool's HR went up.

Also 19.5 hrs ago the Chinese pool alimabi had the 2nd highest HR at 5.07 MH/s and 7.5 hrs ago it was 2.94 MH/s.  Now it's 1.54 MH/s.

ETA:  My pool's HR went back to normal in a few minutes.  I don't know how accurate the numbers are.  My HR can vary by a factor of 2 over a short time for no reason.

Even the Janitor stated it looked like a bomb had gone off down there and it certainly wasn'T from the jet fuel that burned off above. He further stated bombs were going off in the basement before the first plane hit.
Ok, case solved, the janitor has the proof. I'm out...

In the first reports I heard on the radio an eyewitness said a DC3 flew into the first tower.

It's About Sharing, the construction of the towers was unlike anything that had ever been built.  They did survive the impacts of the plane which most buildings would not have.  The way the floors were attached to the uprights was such that once the first floors lost the integrity of their attachments due to the heat, physical damage and added weight of the plane, the weight/ momentum of those floors caused the failure of the floors below in rapid succession.  Again the construction of the towers was unique.  The second tower that was hit came down first because of the way the plane hit it which caused more physical damage to the structure.  That damage was obvious to see.

But you know all this.

I have been doing the downloads vs. users analysis with Bitcoin in the past, and found a rough estimate that adoption is 1/3 of the downloads of a mandatory update. (I don't know where the 2/3 go but this is what the data has suggested in the past Smiley).

This part might actually partly assuage one of my earlier points. It would, if there were two mandatory updates in the time frame considered, with download numbers for both.

As for where they go, I'd guess part of it is people trying out, and not sticking with it. I have a few wallets here that I likely won't ever use anymore.

Once mirrors start popping up, it'll become harder to keep track of downloads btw. I don't think there are any yet.

The last mandatory Monero update was June 11.  It's on the first page of the ANN thread.

Some percentage of the downloads are the same person with more than one computer but rpietila's numbers take that and all other possibilities into account as they are bottom line estimated numbers as explained by him and linked and posted on this and the previous page.  I like putting everything in one sentence Smiley hope it makes sense.

FWIW I don't have a reddit account and only go there via links provided in bct.

WTC steel was tested for 2000 degrees C and the kerosene's open air burning temperature is around 350 degrees C. You can't have a fire that burns at 350 degrees burn something that melts at 2000 degrees.
Bullshit lies: Max adiabatic burn temperature   2,500 K (2,230 °C) (4,040 °F) Open Air Burn temperature: 1,030 °C (1,890 °F)
Bullshit lies #2: Pure Iron ('Steel' with 0% Carbon) starts to melt at 1,492 °C (2,718 °F), and is completely liquid upon reaching 1,539 °C (2,802 °F). Steel with 2.1% Carbon by weight begins melting at 1,130 °C (2,070 °F), and is completely molten upon reaching 1,315 °C (2,399 °F)

Do you guys even Wikipedia?!

Ok steel melts at 1k degrees, but have you read what I wrote? Let me repeat: Kerosene's open air burning temperature is 350 degrees. Please explain how does it melt the 1k degrees steel.
Explanation is simple. You are either a intentionally deceiving people or are intellectually not equipped to have this discussion.

Google jet fuel open air burning temperature. You will get the numbers from above: 2230 C in an engine, 1030 C in open air. Nobody told me what this was, I had to research it.
http://webserver.dmt.upm.es/~isidoro/dat1/eCombus.pdf

Steel is fully ductile (it can be shaped by rollers) at 1050 C, but it begins to soften at around 700 C. Also at 1200+ C it may be fully liquid. You don't need steel to be liquid to collapse a scaffolding structure, it has to be bend under weight enough, which happens at 700C. You build a steel support that needs to hold for example 1Kg. So you design it so it can hold 2Kg without issues. If you design it for 10Kg, then you use 10x more material for no additional results, it is simple economical reason to use sufficient while not being wasteful. So what happens to your little 2Kg capable support when it heats up to 800C? It can only hold 0.5Kg before it bends onto itself. It doesn't need to melt, have you ever worked with metals before?

Conclusion: Kerosene can burn at much more than 350 C and you state this number as the possible maximum. Steel will start losing it's integrity well below it's melting point but you choose it's melting point of 1500 C as minumum. You are deceiving yourself and others.

Did burning fuel melt steel in WTC? I don't know, I don't think so, it doesn't matter. But I don't go around telling people lies. Do your research before throwing stupid numbers around.

Bonus: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ne7W8UPdOro

I remember when closely watching one of the WTC's collapse on video, that around a second before it started to implode, the top part (above the impact) was tilting over. Now, it seems to me that the least resistance is not straight down, but off to one side. This is especially so considering that the top part was leaning over. But it suddenly preceded to go straight down (yes, after the weight was shifting to one side.)

Regarding temperatures and steel weakening. A few points - The steel like lattice structure acted like a heat sink, after all, it is a bunch of inter-connected steel. Couple that with the fire never appeared to get very hot. There was black smoke after the initial explosion. Black smoke means not a hot burning fire but rather one that needs oxygen. To further prove this lower heat theory, there were multiple people standing in the openings waving for help, before the building was detonated/thermited by the criminals in question.

The fire from jet fuel ignited everything within the building such as furniture, plastic and paper as well as the airplane itself.  Maybe this is what you saw?  The next day the resulting ash and smell was drifting in the air in my neighborhood 15 miles away.  How hot was the fire?  I was trained in putting out jet fuel fires.  You couldn't just light it as it had a high ignition temperature.  You could put out a cigarette in it.  We had to pour gasoline over the jet fuel and light that which would then ignite the jet fuel.  I also have experience with welding so I know how steel conducts heat.  The red glow will stay localized.

On the night of February 12, 2005, a fire started in the Windsor building in Madrid, Spain, a 32-story tower framed in steel-reinforced concrete. At its peak, the fire, which burned for almost a day, completely engulfed the upper ten stories of the building. More than 100 firefighters battled to prevent the uncontrollable blaze from spreading to other buildings. 1
http://911research.wtc7.net/wtc/analysis/compare/windsor.html
That building was mangled but never came down.

Steel reinforced concrete.  Different material and totally different construction methods.  Also the fire wasn't at the base of the building which supports the rest of the building.  Then there is the difference in the temperature of the fire.

Many have stated that the towers would have needed to have been closed down or the like for explosives/thermite to have been planted. Looks like there is ample evidence for that. Snippet

Scott Forbes, who was a senior database administrator for Fiduciary Trust, located on the 97th floor of the South Tower received a remarkable notice three weeks before the 9/11 attacks. The Port Authority of New York informed his company that there would be a “power down” on the weekend of Sept. 8 and 9, 2001. This would mean that all power would be off in the top half of the south tower for most of the weekend.

Forbes has called this unprecedented, because to have a data centre lose power for two days requires major preparations and disruption. He reports that as part of the power down, all security cameras and security door locks were non-operational for about 36 hours.

“Remember there were no security locks on doors or security cameras, so access was free unless a door was locked by a manual key. Seeing so many ‘strangers’ who didn’t work at the WTC was unusual,” Forbes said.

Oh look a thread started by me that wasn't started by me.  I wonder who did it? Cheesy

Well I have been in both the medical and aviation fields.

I was driving into Manhattan at the time when the planes hit the Twin Towers so I experienced it in real time even if from a few miles away.

Since the update to your HTTPS I experience the following.

When I go to my wallet and after I select "Players Club" a dialog box appears which says "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely? This webpage contains content that will not be delivered using a secure HTTPS connection which could compromise the security of the entire webpage."

If I select "Yes", that is I want only secure content, I cannot view the page and get a message that the navigation was cancelled.  If I select "No" the Players Club page will be displayed.

I have no idea whether or not this is a security issue but even if it's not it will be off putting to some.

I am using Windows 8.1.
