2521  Other / Meta / Bitcointalk is growing up so fast. 9 years old today on: November 22, 2018, 05:48:10 PM
So I've been going through some of theymos's posts and I realized today is the 9th anniversary of the forum.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5.0

That's the announcement thread by Satoshi for the beginning of this forum as we know it today. Much like a 9 year old there is shit going on that baffles our minds and it has taken on a life of it's own so to speak. I don't know what it was like in the old days but I hear it was great, except when it wasn't.

Everyone talks about how great it was, but I think it was just young and unknown. There were obviously still trolls/scams/spam and shitposts, but with so few users it didn't seem as blatant. Obviously with time and word of mouth these issues have compounded, but I still find great topics/discussions and help peppered throughout the forum.

2522  Other / Meta / Re: Is merit abuse an issue worthy of temp banning or at least DT negative trust? on: November 22, 2018, 05:36:58 PM
Here is a quote from theymos in regards to Merit abuses and punishments - I believe this is what qwk was referring to.

If they complain about amounts, tell them to complain to me. It's best if sources try to exhaust their source allocations, even if it means giving posts higher amounts than is typical. If you have 150 source merit and you only see 3 merit-worthy posts in a month, then I'd rather you over-give each of them 50 merit than let the merit expire. That way there are more people capable of sending merit, and the "merit economy" is less top-down.

If a DT member tags you for something stupid involving merit (ie. probably anything less than selling merit), then they're not going to be a DT member for much longer.

Aside from that, if people complain about whether things deserve merit at all, then that's something to perhaps think about, but if you conclude that they're wrong, then that's that. You don't need to stress about it or defend yourself constantly. It's conceivable that someday you and I will end up disagreeing too much about this stuff and I'll remove your source status, but it's really not a big deal.

It's understandable to want/expect action when we see things transpiring that are so foreign to our own values or the "right" way of doing things. I feel I'm beginning to get a better handle on the ideals behind this forums punitive actions, and they are not meant to be harsh or rigid. So much like other issues with the forum until it becomes more than a blackeye on the system, and actually affects the overall integrity I don't expect there to be a change in attitude.

Edit: theymos quote is pruned - Didn't realize suchmoon's link was to this thread at the time.
2523  Other / Meta / Re: Save Bitcoin Discussion subforum on: November 22, 2018, 02:31:38 PM
It's easy to point to low quality posts, but what would be more constructive is if we made an effort to elevate these topics by providing high quality replies.  I'm convinced that when topics consist primarily of nothing more than generic one or two liner replies, it effectively serves as an invitation for lazy posters to just "add to the pile".  But once a legitimate discussion breaks out, any further low quality posts tend to stand out more and will be easier to report and weed out.  It stands to reason that the more topics we can salvage, the healhier that board will start to look.

Improve the threads, don't just complain about them.

That said, many topics do need locking much sooner, before they can reach the state some of them are in.  Some of them are just too far gone to be saved.

You've pretty much nailed it. I spend a decent amount of time going through threads, requesting their locked and reporting anything within an estimated "payment period". I'm sure I'm just a drop in the bucket for what is reported but I've seen results. Most of these threads loose all semblance of a discussion by page 4, and it becomes a constant flow of spammers replying to the Title/OP.

The problem doesn't stop with just the Sig spammers, unfortunately most members learn by example here. When they see this behavior they will mimic it and not see the problem, well before they wear or can wear a Sig.

Depending on the thread I have seen a decent amount of members who do engage in a good bout of discussion, generally the same users each time. Unfortunately though they can get drown out/disrupted by the flow of Spammy shitposts.

2524  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Innosilicon Terminator 3 on: November 22, 2018, 02:14:13 PM
I reached out to them when I first created the Current Hardware thread, to get info on estimated Delivery dates or independent review info. That started for the T2T+, but moved toward the T3 as well.

There was a little back and forth and then nothing. Then they shared their email list with the world, and the price dropped off - just a wee bit. So I left the ball in their court. Funny how things change in a month, as I'm no longer in a big rush for the NexGen miners for their efficiency. With most of my machines heating the house now, I can hold off a little and see how things shake out.

This was/is the one I'm most interested in atm. That could easily change as their competitors put out their hardware showcasing their performance, while all I have is an unproven Spec sheet.
2525  Economy / Reputation / Re: Dig Bicks, if you have a problem with me, let's discuss it. on: November 21, 2018, 09:00:20 PM
I was just reading that thread; I guess more of a statement as there is no room for reply. Reminds me of the good old scam Ads, that don't want an objective conversation to take place. I honestly assumed you had just Neg'd him or something was going on behind the scenes.

I'd say you are starting to draw the ire of anyone who doesn't like a balanced, and well thought out approach to dealing with their ravings.

Not sure if you have a reputation thread, like some DT members, so I'll say my piece here in regards to you and the statements made.

Who cares what level of math you could solve, in the context of this forum and how you use it. That has no bearing on your ability to actively participate in the community as a productive member. Apart from that I'd like to say I've been reading a lot of your posts recently where you weigh in or offer another point of view to charged situations. I think you have done a great job of approaching each of them in a reasonable way by looking at both sides of the dispute.

Finally, good job not overreacting with the trust system. I write this because I disagree with people being Neg'd for their comments, no matter how stupid or childish.

I know this will probably just be used as fodder for anyone without a real argument, but my sig doesn't change my behavior or opinions.

Edit: I walked away before posting and I can't stop laughing at marlboroza's post. Good stuff
2526  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Antminer s9 chip loss after cleaning on: November 21, 2018, 08:19:29 PM
There is a chance that you may have damaged a component on the board.

It is not recommended to clean electronics with a vacuum. I had no idea when I first got involved in mining either. I think that the vacuum created a chance for a static discharge, exactly what you were trying to avoid by carefully handling the board.

It is recommended that you use compressed air to clean the boards or any internals.

Definitely post the kernel logs as Bitmaxz suggests as there are members who are good at finding the errors within.

Sad day for the OP. Complain about a Full Member account, lose a Sr. Member... who just happens to have some serious post history gaps between 2015-2018.

I thought they were being way to grown up about the account being done. Figured that couldn't be the answer though.

I'm sure the SR. Member account appeal will have more drama.

Would you jump in his grave as fast?

Dug it, and danced on it with HabBear's boots. Ruthless.

If there was no timeline specified in the Ban message then it is a permanent Ban. This thread for Ban appeal and the procedure outlined in the message are all you can do.

No one can say for sure what will be with the market and when we will see some grows. So, play it safe - decide which price is comfortable for you right now and buy ETH, but do iteratively with some time lag (for example a week). And each week revise your comfortable price zone. If price higher, then just wait for the appropriate time.
Basically, you need a strategy. It will help you to eliminate impulsive actions and give confidence. But don't forget to adjust your strategy periodically.

No one can say for sure what will be with the market and when we will see some grows. So, don't wait for uptrend and play it safe - decide which price is comfortable for you right now and buy ETH, BTC and other coins, but do it iteratively with some time lag (for example a week). And each week revise your comfortable price zone. If price higher, then just wait for the appropriate time.

I'd say you are correct in why you were banned, copy/pasting your own content multiple times, is banned the same as Plagiarism. This is the case especially when you are likely doing it for monetary gain. You can see here you pretty much just set up a form letter and changed a few things here and there.

2531  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Will btc difficulty go sideways for rest of the year? on: November 20, 2018, 01:59:51 AM
Obviously still quite a ways out. But we drew about 1/5 of the way through the blocks for this adjustment and its calling for a -15

The only upside to the current bch shitshow/ btc dumping is that for this whole retarget period will be encompassed by it.

I could use a couple more massive Diff decreases.

Glad to hear you got one up and running. Looking forward to your review of the gear.

I'll update the current hardware thread to reflect this gear after anyone's review and photos post up.
2533  Other / Meta / Re: [Guide] Reporting effectively on: November 20, 2018, 12:17:38 AM
What if the most of the user's messages are low value posts?

Not sure where the issue lies.

I would say unfortunately you still need to report each post independently. You also should still look at each thread and ensure that it is a low value low quality reply for that thread.

I can't say I've ever targeted users post history. I tend to find a thread and go through that. I'm sure in doing so I've reported the same user multiple times as spambies tend to be creatures of habit

Sometimes i have to look in the report history where i was to be sure dont report the same post lol  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Wink .

Yeah I keep mine open as I go along, that's how I caught my faux pas lol.
The spam tends to bleed together and blur the lines between posts.

2534  Other / Meta / Re: What is this forum for? on: November 20, 2018, 12:04:11 AM
Of the two of you there is only one who doesn't belong here.

You are not going to salvage your account, you know because of the blatant plagiarism.

2536  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: FAQ information about the merit system on: November 19, 2018, 12:18:12 PM
This is a decent job of putting some information together.

You need to be careful because there are parts that you have copy pasted without providing a source:

Original:
If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

Yours:

How do I become a merit source?

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

The part I struggle with here is that you obviously just removed the second sentence in #2. What gave you away though was that you left the word "We" in #3.

This thread will likely not earn you any merit now. In the future, if you quote properly and provide sources you may fare better.

You are also missing the information that a jr. member requires 1 merit.

Edit: I'm actually more bothered by the fact that you included a link for merit stats but not the reference to the original information.
2537  Economy / Exchanges / Re: LocalCoin Visa Debit Card (Canada's First VISA Debit Card) on: November 19, 2018, 05:20:45 AM
Seems like a pretty sweet deal for anyone holding a decent amount of spendable coin. That 5% isn't so bad when you look at the fees and time frames for withdrawals with some of the Canadian exchanges.

Reading through their compliance reporting. Seems to me this leaves an honor system in place regarding the Capital Gains in Canada.

Is it supposed to be for Canadians only? because I can clearly see a drop menu which allows selecting countries. Also, why does it ask for an address for the shipping after I select virtual cards?

No I believe it would be available to most countries. In the fees you can see a $1.00 for international POS. It may have been for their other services/funding with FIAT but I did see something about a 3% conversion fee as well.

I think the address part is a requirement regardless. It's 1 of the 3 things required no matter what.

Name-Address- Birthdate

Just saying though they do not require valid ID to back this information up.

2538  Other / Meta / Re: Under merited boards: Scam Accusations and Reputation on: November 19, 2018, 04:51:44 AM
I'm no data cruncher so I'm not about to go through to find the numbers on this.

I don't know if OP had a metric in mind to compare merit given out per board or just saw some threads they felt deserved merit or more. There's a good chance the board itself receives less merit because it really is a niche for most people to know if the report has done it's due diligence. I would also wager that the amount of deserving threads being created there daily is less than other boards where more merit is distributed.

Also just because a thread was a lot of work or helped a lot of people doesn't mean it will always earn 20+ merit. There is no formula sometimes you just gotta take the 1 and count it as a win. In the end it shouldn't be about the amount of merit received.

I don't merit boards, I merit good posters.
This really wasn't necessary  Roll Eyes

As has been mentioned many times, awarding merits for reportung posts and bad behaviour is open to abuse, and should not be encouraged.
This is first time I have heard about this, where was it mentioned many times?

Someone spend hours to expose scam, create constructive and interesting post in scam accusation which will probably help many investors and newcomers without enough knowledge and detective skills to save money, how is that not worth of merit?

I recall some of what JC is talking about I think that was more inline with reporting posts, and some merit being awarded for that in the Russian section. Can't be sure right now. I agree that people shouldn't just be reporting posts or plagiarism expecting merit.

The reports Marlboro refers to IMO definitely fit the bill for "quality posts" which I believe to be the base criteria for awarding merit. It just takes people who appreciate this and can validate it to see these threads and award merit. Even if they can't figure it out for themselves, after a while the community usually decides one way or another, making it easier to decide if the thread warrants merit. I'm guilty of getting lost in some of those investigations and kudos to all that take the time to fight scams.

I think this would be a great example for some merit sources to have a proxy, that delivers them lists of threads to reward there. This idea has been kicked around a little to help local boards.

I hear you there, bro.  But man...how could you own that much crypto and not safeguard it better than he apparently did?  If I owned that much, I'd have the private keys locked up in an underground bunker or something.  I'm not even sure I'd be comfortable owning that amount of crypto at all, given how much hacking and theft goes on.  Yowza.
I don't even understand either mate. Last year even though I only had small fractions of a bitcoin I was so paranoid to immediately purchase a hardware wallet. Most people are just simply underestimating what hackers can do to attempt to steal their funds I guess.

I'm lucky in that regard every time I get together a decent pile(still small). The market helps me out by reducing it's value up to about half sometimes.

I did however pick up a cheap PC that I'm trying to setup for cold storage, just haven't had the coins to put there. I used to get really panicky when I first started last year, kinda embarrassingly so. Especially the first few times I made a big purchase rechecking addresses. Needless to say after about a week I stopped using out terrible family laptop, I figured my wife was bound to get all my accounts hacked lol

Considering we haven't heard from OP, it was likely just a troll as previously stated. I did think it was somewhat legit as they had posted the topic when the coins had about 90 confirmations.

Lol hell yeah its against the will you must have different thoughts as you have different finger prints as a human.   Grin

Can you stop ban evading and being a general annoyance. You were banned you were allowed to create 1 thread to discuss/appeal your ban. Pretty sure that's been done.
