3021  Other / Meta / Re: If Bitcoin crashes would this forum still exist? on: July 22, 2021, 07:23:12 PM
Word, couldn't have put it better and more succinctly myself.  The only way this forum would cease to be as popular as it is would be if signature campaigns were done away with.  Bitcoin crashing--even if it were to do so on a massive scale--wouldn't have much of an effect, though I suspect it would have some effect.

Traffic to bitcointalk tends to increase when bitcoin starts shooting to the stars (if I'm not mistaken), so there is some relationship between bitcoin's price and the popularity of the forum.  But a crash?  Yeah, we've seen those many times before--big ones, too, like at the end of 2017, and when Mt. Gox went kablooey.
Yeah, it entirely depends on what the original thread poster meant by crash, it seemed they were implying by crash whether it was a permanent crash or a crash like we've been through multiple times. A temporary crash, might actually increase the amount of users we have temporarily interacting on the forum due to them wanting to know why it crashed. During a crash I would expect the speculation section to have one of the biggest increases, and same goes for when Bitcoin increases significantly in price.

A long term crash instead of a permanent one would undoubtedly have an effect on certain users, and they would probably drift away, however Bitcointalk would likely survive just because we know we are all hoping that Bitcoin becomes much more than a currency that is worth a lot when you peg it to other fiat currencies.

I wouldn't imagine it happening as easily as it sound. Bitcoin will never return to $1 due to the fact that bitcoin enthusiast are growing over time. It would be extreme thinking if we had to think that the price would be $1 in the next decade let alone in the near future. Everyone would call me crazy if I did and that's even more extreme than Musk's negative opinion for bitcoin. Lol
Its interesting for a thought experiment though. If it were to return to $1 or somewhere around there, the amount of users here that would be worrying would be quite significant, and that would likely impact their decision to continue using Bitcoin, and therefore the forum. However, then you have the opposite side of that mentality where more people will be investing into Bitcoin just because its been known to rise significantly over its lifetime. I mean, if Bitcoin ever crashed as significantly as that, I can just imagine the amount we all would be trying to buy.
3022  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why do many people call Bitcoin "digital gold"? on: July 22, 2021, 06:05:48 PM
it's just that people like shiny good looking things.
This is backed up by the evidence we have from how popular Casascius conis were, and all the other variations which were released after. People just love to hold a physical item, and I'm not sure what the psychology is behind that, but there's definitely a reason for it. Casascius identified this early, and made major profits during the time they were selling the coins.

However, despite us wanting to hold a physical item, modern times are changing quite quickly, most people are becoming accustomed to handling their finances online, where as 5-10 years ago, most people thought of it as insecure.  So, while at the moment people like shiny physical things, it is quickly changing. Several challenging banks are now operating entirely online, and don't even have any local branches that you can go too. Bitcoin will most certainly benefit from this psychological shift in our culture.
3023  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: July 22, 2021, 05:34:17 PM
I can't remember a single Name that could shake up the division ... maybe it's because there really aren't any worthy candidates right now, or maybe because the UFC has gone from being a hardcore sports organization to a Broadway show. In any case, I hope Dariusz will smear his opponent, lowering him to the bottom lines of the rating (I still don't understand how he took 5th place if he never fought with the UFC stars). Although on the other hand, if Makhachev becomes the champion and there is someone who will take the newly acquired title from him, then we can expect the return of Khabib.
I'm not sure I agree with you that the UFC is becoming a broadway show, I mean its probably one of the most brutal sports around. I would say that boxing is starting to really go down the drain recently, and that's not even because of the Youtubers that have been joining in on the fun. 155 must be one of the most stacked divisions also, there top 10 is of amazing quality, its just the top 4 are particularly good.
3024  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will everyone still believe in Elon Musk? on: July 22, 2021, 12:10:54 PM
Although, I would generally agree that we as Bitcoin users are quite hostile to anything negative said about Bitcoin, even when there's genuine criticism, most of Elon Musk's points have been unsubstantiated or weak claims rather than anything concrete. That's the problem when someone with as much influence as him has, that is drastically effects the short term outlook on Bitcoin, and those that are invested in it, despite there actually not being much substance behind what he has brought up which you could argue is fair to criticize back.
3025  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: As a newbie, we must know this. A question here! on: July 22, 2021, 11:44:54 AM
There's literally no harm in copying the link from your other posts. I don't really understand the motive of copy, and pasting from another source, yet not providing the source. If its your post, your already at the source link, and that is another second or two of your time to get the link, and provide it with your new post. Do note though, that copying, and pasting in such a manner might actually be considered a low quality post, especially if its just copying it, and that's it not adding to it at all.

Basically, if you are copying from another source then always supply the link back to it.
3026  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some Books we need to read on: July 22, 2021, 11:40:16 AM
Reading one of those books once in a while is a decent way to obtain some linear information, and the variety let’s one hover from the more technical prone books to those more related to usage, trading or historical background.
Its surprising no matter how long you've been involved with anything, how was you forget if you aren't using it on a regular basis. This is especially the case for languages, ,and syntax for programming as well as Bitcoin. Bitcoin is very complicated, and it would impossible to remember all the details of it if you weren't using them every day, which lets me honest none of us do, unless your actively developing.
3027  Other / Meta / Re: If Bitcoin crashes would this forum still exist? on: July 22, 2021, 10:45:09 AM
You'd get reduced user base, and there would likely be less opportunities to earn here. Although, as long as its profitable for casinos to operate, they likely would still operate. It depends entirely on what you mean by crash, if you mean crash as in become absolutely worthless, no matter how unlikely that is, then you probably wouldn't see many businesses accepting Bitcoin anymore, and the forum would eventually become unused, though that's if Bitcoin become absolutely worthless, and there wasn't any other appeal i.e collectible which is probably close to impossible. However, if it were to hit some pretty low levels, then this forum would definitely take a hit, but this forum was popular when Bitcoin was worth <$25 , so I don't think it would be overly bad.

For Bitcoin to become absolutely worthless there would likely have to be a critical error in its design, which isn't the case. You could argue that it might eventually be replaced by something better, but that's also not looking likely at this point, and wouldn't mean it would become worthless, but rather less valued.
3028  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some Books we need to read on: July 22, 2021, 09:04:34 AM
Mastering Bitcoin by  Andreas M. Antonopoulos is probably one of the best out of the bunch. Anything by Andreas is usually pretty good. I've not heard nor read most of these though, and I'm dubious by some of the titles such as. Especially, the kids books this was being discussed in another thread, but I don't think its overly important to be teaching your kids about Bitcoin, especially at a very young age like the "B is for Bitcoin" book aims to do. Since, kids generally learn quicker when they can talk about every day things, see those things, and then can relate. Bitcoin is something that you can potentially suggestion once they reach their teens, but earlier than that I feel wouldn't be suitable.
3029  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey agree to talk about bitcoin at an event in July on: July 22, 2021, 08:56:37 AM
Is anyone able to round up exactly was said? The price of Bitcoin hasn't been significantly effected, but has gone up slightly so I'm assuming that not much was said, but it was probably nothing negative. I refuse to look at news sites just in case they inject their own bias, and I don't really want to sit down, and watch this.
3030  Other / Archival / Re: Moscow Project: Tell About Bitcoin on: July 22, 2021, 08:52:55 AM
Structured quite well with clean bullet points, although flyers aren't the greatest ways of advertising. I would like to think it would probably be cheaper, and more effective to advertise online or if you can muster up enough money, TV. Youtube, and social medias would get a lot more views though, and I believe in this day, and age people are more inclined to take notice on these platforms, while flyers usually get put in the bin. Seriously, the flyers I receive are usually chucked away without a second glance.

It is always good to see this though, although I do think it could probably be streamlined.
3031  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: July 22, 2021, 08:48:48 AM
Lightweight category is for sure very interesting now and I think that fighters under Khabib wings will rule this category in future, he is training with them all the time and giving them advices in and out of octagon.
Islam Makhachev is now ranked number 5 and I expect to see him fighting for title in next year, but competition is very good with champion Oliveiora, Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje and maybe even Beneil Dariush.
I don't think Dariush is a title challenging, and nor do I think he belongs in the same sentence as Dustin, Justin, and Oliveria. Though, the Lightweight category has always been fairly stacked, its nice to know that Makhachev could potentially replace Khabib's departure. Don't get it confused, I think Khabib was much better, but we needed two really good submission artists to shake up the division a little.
3032  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey agree to talk about bitcoin at an event in July on: July 21, 2021, 06:05:39 PM
And then there are some very high level investors such as Kevin O'Leary (Sharktank) who could care less about what Elon has to say Smiley
I'd say that I care enough that I'll definitely be reading up about what was said after the event, but I'm not that interested to watch it live. No matter what, there will likely be a price reaction to what is said, unless nothing is said at all, which is unlikely as I find people tend to struggle with personal bias when it comes to things like this, and undoubtedly one of them will say something that can be perceived negative for Bitcoin.
3033  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Remove Proxyban (evil fees) - email to get whitelisted for free on: July 21, 2021, 06:00:25 PM
Great idea and good initiative LoyceV, but what worries me a bit is that you will start to get so much email requests for whitelisting that you won't have enough time to answer and reply everyone who sent them.
There's probably more than enough users already offering their time to whitelist, and we could potentially setup a forwarding system for any unanswered cases. However, I doubt that this will be overly popular, since the only exposure is this thread. Unless, theymos has changed the evil score message to reflect that you can request manual whitelisting, I don't think its going to be overly used.

For the record, I've had zero emails for whitelisting currently.
3034  Other / Off-topic / Re: Will you buy this book for your kids? on: July 21, 2021, 05:56:22 PM
Obviously, if they are learning the alphabet the following doesn't really apply; However generally, kids should choose their own path i.e pursue their own interests. As a parent all you can do is guide them, but they ultimately should choose what they enjoy doing. So, I don't think that Bitcoin should be forced on kids, just the same as anything else shouldn't.

As for this particular book, it just doesn't seem appropriate for all of the reasons listed above. You want to make sure that your kid is going to have as easy time as possible in school, and the alphabet isn't something that should be taught with Bitcoin.
3035  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: July 21, 2021, 05:51:34 PM
I remember when Poirier got Khabibs head and tried to choke him (to bad he managed to catch only the head, but not head with arm, otherwise Khabib would have little chances to sneak out). As he managed to catch such a master of wrestling, that might prove that Poirier is not a newbie grappling. That is why I would not say that "if the fight will be on the feet - Poirier wins, if on the ground - Oliveira wins".
This is probably the closest Khabib ever came to losing too, at least off the top of my head it is. I do believe there's an interview where he says he was a little worried at the time. Poirier isn't no one to mess about with on the ground, I just know Oliveria specialized in that department. Anyone can get caught though, and Khabib very nearly did, and of course anything can happen on the day. I feel Poirier needs to keep it standing for the best success though, that's clearly where he dominated over Oliveria.
3036  Economy / Services / Re: 30.000 sats for your review! on: July 21, 2021, 10:09:46 AM
Yes I changed my mail cause I use a new one for safety work with money online. Anyway nobody need to send ME money or give me something, so I don't understand why u talk about escrow...I send money to people!
Regardless if you are sending the money or receiving the money, escrow aims to protect before the seller/service provider, and its customers/clients. Escrow prevents you not releasing the funds once the task has been completed, and also prevents you from getting scammed once you said the Bitcoin. I'm not implying that you would run off with the money once the task has been completed, but its peace of mind for all those involved. The only way around it would be paying users up front, but then your at risk yourself.

Generally though, I doubt many established users would risk their reputation for such a small amount, and as long as you pick your users carefully you shouldn't have too many problems. However, that's on you if you take that risk, and its absolutely always recommended to use a escrow where possible.
3037  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey agree to talk about bitcoin at an event in July on: July 21, 2021, 09:46:04 AM

Does he? I believe his influence on the price has faded as fast as his popularity among Bitcoiners, or coiners in general. He’s a troll, and an “enemy” of Bitcoin like Roger Ver and Jihan Wu before him. John McAfee is respected than Elon Musk.
Its not the people who are die hard fans of Bitcoin that he influences, he influences those that are new or treating it as an investment opportunity. So, yeah he definitely still has as much influence as he did when he Tesla made the statement around a month or two ago.

Also, I think its pushing it to claim Mcafee is more respected that Elon Musk. Just because Elon Musk is considered enemy number one to most users on this forum, doesn't automatically make him the worst person in the world.
3038  Other / Meta / Re: Plagiarism: Where Do We Draw the Line? on: July 21, 2021, 09:42:15 AM
I have been on other non-crypto related forums where you were redirected to the rules after registering an account. There was a countdown of 10-20 or more seconds where you had to stay on the page before you could close it and confirm that you read the rules. You cant force anyone to read what is written, but it's still a nice initiative.
I prefer the quiz idea which has been thrown around a few times. If you wanted you could actually get pretty fancy with it, for example during the quiz you could list the rules simialr to the unofficial guidelines that mprep has written up, and then ask them to copy, and paste the rule which talks about plagiarism into a checkbox to advance, upon doing that you could then give them a pop up, and state plagiarism or copy, and pasting for those unfamiliar with the term is disallowed, and will result in a ban. You could probably do this via a pop up on the screen, while it is allowing, and some people will likely block it, this would be a pretty neat interactive quiz which would educate users a little better.
3039  Other / Off-topic / Re: It's Take Time to perfect your SKILLS on: July 21, 2021, 09:35:26 AM
Most certainly takes more than a month or a week to perfect any skills, in fact most skills you'll never perfect. I get what you are trying to say though, and that is newbies shouldn't expect to be perfect right off the bat, and we as a community should be understanding of that, which I believe most of us are. The key thing when you are newbie is not the necessarily the skills you have or the quality of your posts, its the effort that's taken into consideration. Especially, when it comes to meriting. If you are putting significant effort into your posts, and they might potentially be inaccurate, you'll likely get merit just on effort alone, because over time you will get better at posting.

Think about it this way, if there's a person who posts at short length but is precise with the idea he wants to deliver compared to someone who posts a lot of jargon, making it hard to read and confusing when reading about it. Who's better? For sure, it's the former.
Yeah, especially when it comes to discussing technical things. You need to be concise, unfortunately I'm not that great at being concise, and tend to over elaborate.

3040  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: July 21, 2021, 08:56:42 AM
I think that this is going to be like this: Oliveira will fight Poirier and Poirier will win, Makhachev will fight Chandler (I think he is the weakest in top1-4) and wait (probably for a year) when Poirier will have another fight with McGregor and win. Then Poirier will either win Makhachev and defend title several times, or Makhachev will win and there will another boring-blanket champ, who will submit most of his opponent like Khabib.
I don't know. Oliveria is very good on the ground, and that's where I expect this fight to go. I mean, Poirier is also a black belt, but I do think that Oliveria has got Poirer's  number on the mat. On the feet, Poirier wins all day for me. Dustin is probably the more rounded fighter, but Oliveria definitely has incredible grappling, and submissions. He also appears to be significantly stronger than most hes faced in the division.

Submissions boring? I love me some submissions. There's nothing better than a fight that has the stand up for a round or two, and then the rest of it some competitive grappling.
