2641  Economy / Speculation / Re: [Poll] If this happens, is it time to sell your Bitcoin? on: November 10, 2021, 07:13:42 PM
I'll be selling a bit of my Bitcoin when it gets to the $100k (£74k) mark since I want to fund a trip with some of that money, and that's the price I've justified paying it with Bitcoin, however that's only if it happens within the next 6 months. Otherwise, I'll be keeping all my Bitcoin where it belongs.

I don't tend to follow the trends, and current speculation. I treat Bitcoin as a way of storing my money, that is at the moment continuously appreciating in value on a yearly basis, and can't be touched by the greedy banks. So, I only ever withdraw when there's a need. Usually, when I want to dip into it for emergency use or recreational.

I'm also a firm believer in most people don't understand that correlation doesn't mean causation, and therefore tend to avoid any sort of advice other than my own gut instincts. Served me fairly well over the years, though I'll be honest I could definitely be a lot richer if I were a little more courageous in storing most of my wealth in Bitcoin.
2642  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Recovering deleted wallet/files from HDD on: November 10, 2021, 07:06:38 PM
I wasn't really concerned before I made this thread, the other users here warned me about the dangers of leaving a computer unattended, especially to a technician. I wasn't too concerned about my Metamask wallet, since it's encrypted and requires my password, the Bitcoin one though was at a higher risk.

Thinking back to it, i shouldn't have handed my laptop without removing the HDD, which was merely a two minute job.
Yeah, my personal rule set is never include your hard drive with the laptop when you're offloading it to someone else. You don't know what people's intentions are, though most will likely be innocent, and wouldn't even think about checking for previous data. Then, the more, and more they use it the less likely it becomes to recover anything substantial.

If you are purchasing old hard drives it is usually enough to wipe the hard drive via a format, and not worry too much about malicious code. Though, there is a small amount of risk involved with that too. If you're offloading your own computer, and the hard drive has to be included for whatever reason, then I would recommend writing 0's to it, with multiple checks. You can do this within Linux or you can use a program like DBAN if you wish.
2643  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Sweden proposed to ban mining in the European Union on: November 10, 2021, 06:39:33 PM
Instead of banning cryptomining as a whole, why don't they sanction some other industries that are using too much energy and are contributing less on towards the economy? Or better, why not tone down on energy use on all sectors in order to meet the quota/demand of the Paris agreement? It's as if cryptomining is the only culprit to this long-standing problem, and the only solution there is in order to cut down on carbon emissions is to kill it.

It's a harsh call, but then again I expect to see most of the EU to follow suit on the suggestions. Perhaps not to the degree of banning cryptomining as a whole, but making it hard for miners to keep a steady operation going.

Simple, those industries that you're alluding too are beneficial to the very politicians that re proposing this idea. Just think about it; they need oil, they need fossil fuels, however they don't actually need Bitcoin, therefore to save face, and prove they're doing something about climate change they'll focus their attention on limiting the production of Bitcoin. Depending on how much of a conspiracy theorist you're then you could potentially argue that they're killing two birds with one stone with this approach.

Honestly, the way the world is going with climate change being the buzz word on everyone's tongue I expect a lot of countries to follow suit, and ban Bitcoin mining, and they'll blame it on Proof Of Work.
2644  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin circulation increases on: November 10, 2021, 06:33:53 PM
What's the consensus criteria for circulating coins? This will always be an estimation, and probably a rather inaccurate one. After all, coins that were burned or lost yesterday might appear to be circulating or a Bitcoin holder which has been holding for 5+ years without sending any transactions might be deemed circulated coins.

I think what can be said, is most people overestimate the amount of coins which have been lost, since people tend to get the definition of lost confused.
2645  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: November 10, 2021, 06:29:55 PM
Well, the takedown of Usman has officially been ruled as a non takedown, and he still boosts his 100% takedown record. I have to say though, that's a rather fragile record, as it could easily be argued that it was indeed a takedown.

^  You can?t really compare two back to back PPV events with the next one.  And for a ordinary filler event, it?s slightly above average imo.  Other than the main event I think Song Yadong vs Arce, Moises vs Alvarez and Baeza vs Williams will be good...

We can?t really complain after being spoiled for a couple of weekends.  Grin

Got a banger of an event on the December the 11th too. Poirier vs Oliveria being the headliner, though if I remember off the top of my head correctly, there's a bunch of high profile fighters fighting that night.
2646  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: November 09, 2021, 02:34:59 PM
Next card looks alright, nothing too spectacular. I don't think the Max Holloway fight is going to be competitive enough to get excited about. Think Max runs away with the win, and probably gets a finish.

The big fuss over last weekends fights is not the results themselves, but whether Colby got a takedown on Usman. What do you guys think? Based on the rulebooks from several different competitions there's arguments for both ways, I think on the night it was mentioned that is wasn't officially registered as a takedown, and was more of a trip.

I'm undecided on the exact definition. Colby most certainly took him down onto the ground, but only briefly didn't exactly have any prolonged control, since Usman popped up right away. There was also another grappling exchange where technically Colby did put him down, but Usman managed to get on top via rolling.
2647  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: November 07, 2021, 12:31:54 PM
Rose did well, but I thought it was closer than one of the judges scored it. They scored 4 rounds for Rose, which is mad come to think of it. I do think it could have went either way with it at least being a 5-4 on either side. Good battle though. I'm annoyed because Usman, and Hawes messed up my accumulator for 17k. I had Usman by TKO, and Hawes just winning. The annoying thing is; Hawes was doing incredibly well until...well he wasn't.

Justin, and Chandlers fight was something else. Real good fight, had it all stand up, and a little bit of wrestling. Also, Chandler taking down Justin in extreme fashion, and smashing his face into the canvas was quite the sight. Justin's ability to stay calm in the pocket is impressive.

Alex Periera got his knockout in style, though I'll be honest he's going to have major issues when it comes to wrestling, and grapplers. Just think if that was Brunson in front of him, he would have been mauled. He needs to work on the grappling, and takedown defense. Obviously, credit where credit is due he got the knock out.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the UFC avoid matching Alex up with serious wrestlers to try, and mask it on his way up to Adensanya, because a pure striking match between them will be brilliant, and something the fans will want.
2648  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: November 06, 2021, 12:58:55 PM
Rose vs Zhang WeiLi
Not sure why rose is still the underdog . As we clearly see , she 'outmatch' ZhangWeiLi on last match. ZhangWeiLi is all-rounded ,but the mentality is already broken ( feel like might be the same with Paulo Costa) . Go to different camp for this fight . a huge no-no for me.
I wouldn't say she was outmatched, she just walked into pretty much the first significant contact of the fight, that happens sometimes. I'm expecting a much tougher outing for Rose this time, and I think I would agree that Zhang is the favourite going into the fight. Rose is a fan favourite, and it's sometimes quite hard to remove that bias, but Zhang has been brilliant for a long time, and I expect her to be a little more switched on tonight, and respect Rose's power a little more.
2649  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: [Boxing] Canelo Alvarez vs Caleb Plant on: November 04, 2021, 07:00:14 PM
This fight with Caleb Plant has become personal to Canelo for all the trash talk Caleb has thrown at Canelo and Canelo said that he wants to punish Plant for that so I guess this will go the full 12 rounds and there is no chance of an upset here IMO.
Just trying to sell the fight, I don't there's anything more than that in the exchanges between them. Hell, even Plant knows that the odds are stacked against him, and this type of match up isn't going to encourage many casuals to watch, since as you say there's little chance of an upset on the night. Though, stranger things have happened.

Cancelo at the moment, is pretty much unchallenged. I don't think he has to worry about facing many people in the division, unfortunately for us this means he isn't likely to be fighting in back, and forth entertaining fights, and they'll just be one sided fights.
2650  Other / Meta / Re: Not only contributors, the forum also care about the safety of your bitcoin. on: November 04, 2021, 06:25:06 PM
IIRC, those who donated 10 BTC were able to get one factoid spot. Over time, some of the links people posted in their factoids became 'dead' as projects failed/closed/ended, and those were removed.

Theymos solicited factoids in this thread in 2014, and again in in this thread in 2018.
Also staff get one slot I believe, obviously still has to be approved by theymos. What's interesting is it seems to be fairly well managed, and most old factoids that you hint to that become redundant are removed. However, there are some factoids which were requested by banned users, that are still running today. The one example I see isn't really advertising though, so I guess theymos doesn't mind too much.
2651  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: November 04, 2021, 05:48:22 PM
Colby will bring his A game and will rock Usman in the first, if he can't get the finish then it will be over sooner than the first fight• Usmans jab as well as his wrestling will keep Colby attentive•
Welli will have adjusted her game and strategies and believe knows how to get the finish. I do like rose but am unsure how she will have upped her game although she does have an excellent camp, will be interesting fight.
Fight of the night gathje v Chandler can't see this lasting very long. Both will come to destroy their opponent with every kick and punch thrown, both great wrestlers so I predict some basic grappling with some uppercuts on the breaks but will mostly stand and bang• gaethje for the win in the 3rd----lets go 60gs danaaa
The thing is with Colby; if he doesn't knock out Usman with one hit or at least stun him enough for some ground, and pound then he isn't likely to out point Usman or submit him. I don't think Colby has the knockout power required to beat Usman, and Usman if he does get in trouble will go to wrestling Colby which I don't think Colby has a answer for.

This fight will either go the way of the first fight or Usman will use more of his wrestling skills, and grind it out for a relatively non action fight. I'm split between going for a Usman KO/TKO, because of the potential of Usman just playing it a little more safe. I'm not sure yet, but I'm leaning more towards the KO. I can't see Colby winning this fight in any shape or form.
2652  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: November 04, 2021, 03:24:16 PM
Going to review some tapes on the other fighters in the card, but I must say even outside the bigger names this card is absolutely brilliant.

Cant wait to see this guy also. I know that you are Stylebenders and perhaps remember Pereira as a guy who won him 2 times (the only guy who KOed Stylebender). I bet you are excited to see if they would meet in the octagon.
It'll be nice to see if Alex can cope with MMA, and not just kickboxing. Plus, Andreas is an absolute machine to go against on his debut. I'm expecting a KO by someone, and while I quite like Andreas maybe for the sake of a story, and a little bit of hype Alex Pereira Winning would likely be the better option for the division to create some intrigue, and whether he can beat Izzy once again.

I'm looking forward to it regardless.
2653  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: November 04, 2021, 11:55:34 AM
Usman by TKO, I just can't see Colby bringing anything more than their last fight, and I would say that Usman has significantly improved since then. So, I think it'll be a relatively easy night for him. I'm actually fancying Weili Zhang in the rematch, I think losing how she did last time will be a big motivator going into this fight, and Rose might just take the foot off the pedal now she has achieved what she wanted. Marlon Vera all day long I'd say, so that probably means he'll lose. Also, I'm going with Justin Gaethje by tko.

I'm very excited for the Andreas Michailidis vs Alex Pereira fight, I think that's going to be an absolute banger of a fight. I'm not sure which way it's going to go either.
2654  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk Youtube channel - what would you like to see? on: November 02, 2021, 04:12:39 PM
Cyrus I'm wondering; you've mentioned that you hired a video production team, is this something which is a full time thing for them, and you now? Since, from what I can gather you intend on releasing frequent episodes of the BitcointalkShow, I'm assuming what will be on a Friday judging on the poll results, I'm guessing to keep up any type of consistent schedule that's going to take a number of days to film each time, right?

My thinking is; user interviews at least virtual ones, might actually be great filler content, and won't require too much setup/production, which still being entertaining. At least that's my thinking, I might be underestimating the production value of a podcast there.

Ignoring and not using their services is much better option than hating.
Decentralized alternative for youtube would be great to have but I don't think most people is ready to give up their google addiction.
Google have a monopoly so it's very difficult to avoid actually using their services. I've even gone to the extent of using a GSI on my phone so that I don't have any Google services installed, but I've used gmail though I'm in the process of moving everything towards Proton Mail only old stuff now is on my gmails. However, I've used all sorts of their services mainly because everyone else does, and they usually use Google to point you to certain things, and obviously there's AWS which a lot of people are using to host content. So, the way it's currently they're hard to completely ignore as all of us are probably somewhat dependent on them.

I'm not even bothered about a decetralised video platform, just one that doesn't outright censor. I mean Bitcointalk isn't exactly decentralised, and I think we do a decent job around censorship, though I'll try, and avoid patting ourselves on the back there. However, three's plenty of websites, and services which don't censor as much as Google does.
2655  Other / Meta / Re: Bump Spam - Invites & Accounts sub on: November 02, 2021, 03:50:58 PM
Yeah, the lack of further action is probably because the moderator handling the reports can't actually verify themselves easily (at least without relying on third party sites). However, I've reported a few of these to the higher ups, and they can see deleted posts. Though, from now on I'm thinking of archiving the threads myself, and then monitoring the bumps so I can verify it myself, rather than rely on other websites which are logging all replies deleted, just to be sure.

I agree though, restricting this behaviour in the first place as a way of mitigation is probably a good idea. It's has particularly become a problem as of recent, as users know that they sort of get away with it the majority of the time.
2656  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: November 01, 2021, 06:23:58 PM
I think it was the left hook that shook Jan, well Glover Teixeira really did not overconfidently combo another punch I think this is just to set up the takedowns, and just like you I think that Jan Blachowicz is not himself, he is always backing down, when he has really gotten a clean shot over Teixeira he just backs down I think he did well on the 1st round he just didn't commit on what he is doing, because he can pressure Glover Teixeira from a distance shot,

I think that Izzy really is thinking the same, he should have got that Light Heavyweight by now if he didn't think about the size difference, but the fight with Israel Adesanya in my opinion is a different Jan Blachowicz, but this Blachowicz is a little off and doesn't have any technicality with his style I think Israel Adesanya should try it again against Glover Teixeira Pressuring Glover from the distance is what I see the best way to beat him.
All fighters have off days, just unfortunately for Jan, Glover was absolutely game on the night. I don't think he'll be too upset over the loss, he'll get his chance to win the belt back, and to be honest he's probably the favourite in that division.

I'd like to see Izzy move up the division again, but come in a little bit heavier. He got bullied with the weight, and I'm not sure he underestimated it or wasn't bothered, and just wanted to test his skills. He didn't seem too upset that he lost the undefeated record.

I'm a massive fan of Izzy, but the division has gotten a little bit stale, and only Whittaker really who's actually capable of beating him if they both turn up to fight. Obviously, Costa, Vettori, and the like have an outside chance, but I think Whittaker is the real contender.
2657  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk Youtube channel - what would you like to see? on: November 01, 2021, 03:41:10 PM
Just a quick note Welsh - assuming you're referring to the ban around 2018[1], they've recently started relaxing this constraint and now allow ads regarding Cryptocurrency exchanges and wallets if they abide by certain rules
Yeah, this is partly why I suggested contacting them to see if they would remove the keyword ban. It does seem that Google went with a blanket like approach where they banned anything, and everything related to Bitcoin, probably without much human review. Now they've relaxed the rules when advertising Cryptocurrencies on their platforms, they haven't reviewed the keyword bans.

I understand from a certain point of view they want to protect their users from scams, and they don't want to be held responsible if a user gets scammed because it was advertised on their platform, however Bitcointalk doesn't offer anything it's in itself a platform to discuss, and that's the point I'd be making if I were to contact them.

Though, I'm not quite sure what sort of contact options there are, as I said I like to stay away from Google products as much as possible.
2658  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Happy 13th Anniversary Bitcoin Whitepaper on: November 01, 2021, 03:32:54 PM
This post would so much better if it included a link to the 13-year-old white paper as well  Wink
https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf

You never know who could be reading this post today or sometime in the future. It could be a guest, newbie or an old member who has never read the Bitcoin White paper.
Other I am glad to have boarded the rocket a little over 4 years ago, and It had had a positive impact in my life.
True, although the whitepaper isn't that great for newbies that aren't already familiar with encryption, Crypocurrencies or have a technical background in computers. If I was going to try, and persuade someone who is a member of the general public, I wouldn't be showing them the Bitcoin Whitepaper right off the bat. Instead, I'd look to find less complex resources which explain it in a friendly manner, then supplement that with the Bitcoin Whitepaper.

Since, I believe the whitepaper is more for the technically minded, rather than the general public.

If i remember correctly, there was a major economic crisis in 2008 and just after a year later Satoshi come up with this white paper which rectifies the problems in the current economic model. This was in reaction to the current paper money model, which makes rich more richer and poor more poorer. Sadly bitcoin has not been accepted widely and openly even after 13 years. Lets hope the adoption come soon everywhere.
Generally, when life throws up a problem, a solution is found. Bitcoin was the solution to people losing their money with banks that needed bailing out. However, most people are sleeping on that very fundamental principle of Bitcoin, and instead see it as a risky investment that could potentially make them a lot of money to put back into their bank which will likely need bailing out yet again eventually or worse cease trading entirely.
2659  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: November 01, 2021, 03:24:00 PM
^  It was one of those match ups that you don’t want both fighters to lose.  Cheesy  I love them both and I hope Blachowicz gets another crack at it.

And I didn’t realize that we’re having two PPV events back to back this time.  I was expecting just another fight night card next weekend.  Grin

Aaaahh nice to hear this narrator’s voice again.  Lol.
I think Jan will get another crack at it, and probably win it back. From my point of view Glover has achieved everything that he has ever desired in terms of MMA, and therefore we'll probably see him decline quite a bit. He's already one of the older fighters in the UFC, and despite being in decent condition for the division, I feel like that was mainly due to the determination to get the belt.

Jan's also getting on mind, and I don't think he has the same outlook as Glover so I think he'll only have one chance to win it back, and if he does I can't see him staying in the fight game for too long. At least, not in the UFC. I can definitely see Glover dropping down to Belator, and giving us a few fights there though.

We've got some awesome fight nights coming up. This weekend is a decent one, and then we have the 11th of December which I'm particularly excited about. Absolute stacked card as long as no one drops out.
2660  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk Youtube channel - what would you like to see? on: November 01, 2021, 03:06:55 PM
PSA: Youtube seems to be deleting comments containing BitcoinTalk. So far it seems to delete just links, seems Youtube is allergic to links. You could read more about that here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5365512
Ridiculous. I didn't think I could hate Google more before this.

I'm wondering whether this was implemented when Google banned Bitcoin advertisements? Maybe, just maybe they would change this if contacted about it. I do doubt it though. This probably means that monetization of the channel would likely be difficult in the future, simply because it's called the Bitcointalk show, and if they've gone to the extent of banning "Bitcointalk" in the comments, I imagine a lot of Bitcoin related channels aren't monetized or find it difficult to do so.
