If people didn't know already Polinex will require name and country of residence when withdrawing funds from tomorrow. I don't know exactly how they want to confirm this or if they will even but personally I'm not hanging around to wait and see.

This leaves Gems without a major exchange which doesn't have some kind of problem or issue of security (BTER) etc. What are people here likely to do and should we push for another major exchange like Cryptsy to include us?

Demo Day Recap: 5 Boost VC Bitcoin Startups on the Rise

Reveal

"Coin-first is the new mobile-first."

Such was the opening salvo of Reveal CEO Matt Ivester's enthusiastic introduction to Reveal, a social networking company billed as the first to use its own integrated cryptocurrency, revealcoin, which is an asset on the Stellar network.

The founder of college gossip website JuicyCampus, Ivester had reason to be confident at the event, having already closed the majority of its seed funding from investors including Resolute Ventures and Bitcoin Opportunity Corp.

While light on technical details, the pitch seems telling of the company's strategy to come. Reveal has so far sought to target everyday teenagers outside the bitcoin community while courting unidentified "social media celebrities" to the service.

"We believe that users should share in the value they help create," Ivester said. "We can do things that no other social network can. We can create true community ownership, we can directly incentivize viral growth."

Designed for quick sharing, Reveal allows users to design two-layer messages, the first of which can be peeled away to reveal a picture or drawing. Reveal aims to monetize through a similar strategy as the messaging service GetGems, mandating advertisers on the network pay with revealcoin.

Users can in turn earn revealcoin for promoting the network, interacting with ads or by reading priority messages from other users.

"We can solve spam, access and messaging," Ivester said. "Eventually we can be the way millions of teens are introduced to cryptocurrency."

Reveal is currently operating in beta with an eye to launch this fall.

Reveal looks interesting but if they never sell the coins then they will hold almost all the coins so what's to stop them selling them off when they want?

is there a bitcointalk thread for reveal?
903  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Any new alt coin development? on: May 18, 2015, 05:17:01 AM
These are just old coins and coins with no real world use. I was thinking more IPO/ICO's that were coming up that had something new to offer. I personally look for a coin that is linked with another product or service etc that makes the coin indispensable to the product or service.

Qora/Monero a new development? Are you kidding..
904  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Any new alt coin development? on: May 17, 2015, 08:44:47 PM
Any new development like Factotum or Gems to invest in, something substantial and not hype?

Please don't make this a pump your coin thread. I just want to know about exciting current projects that are launching and can be invested in.
905  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Safest company/coin/country to buy and hold Gold? on: May 17, 2015, 05:50:26 PM
I see those 5 services at best as scam, as BS at worst.
A better way is to travel to Geneva or Zurich, sell your BTC there via localbitoins and buy gold with the cash.
Then it's easy to store your gold there in a vault.

While I don't know those companies isn't having a gold certificate stored on the blockchain pretty secure, well as secure as and ownership of Gold in a vault ultimately? I mean if you have the claim on a well run vault in a 'safe; country thats quite safe, I mean its not an ETF or something that is ownership of nothing.

Sure holding is ideal but its not always practical plus tax is an issue in most countries.

What are the safe countries if you have stored gold anyway? I'm thinking Asia is the safest, maybe Hongkong or Singapore. I could see confiscation happening anywhere in Europe.
906  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Safest company/coin/country to buy and hold Gold? on: May 17, 2015, 05:46:02 PM
Anyone knows Amagi Metals? they seem to be doing a hell of a job, and they are Bitcoin exclusive. I would help brands like this. You are buying metal, and helping BTC at the same time.

They're well known. I haven't bought from them yet as intercontinental shipping (to UK) makes it less attractive, but they have good opinion.

AM official thread:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=130831.0

But where did you get the 'bitcoin exclusive' info from? From what I remember they said they hope to switch to bitcoin-only in the next few years but other payments are still shown on their website.

A quick look at their site shows the Gold is stored in Switzerland. Maybe in the past Switzerland has been neutral in times of war etc but I personally wouldn't rely on that as part of the EU block which is more than likely to go tits up in the coming years.
907  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Safest company/coin/country to buy and hold Gold? on: May 16, 2015, 06:51:10 PM
I did a search and gave up after 5 mins. I saw this article and got thinking about buying gold certificates with Bitcoin and holding them. But I wonder how safe the vaults are and what country and company is less likely come a global reset to not confiscate your gold?

I don't see how any self respecting bitcoiner would prefer a centralized messenging app!?!?!?!  But when I brought this up in the thread below, closed minded bitcoiners shot me down!!  So I say screw converting bitcoiners, I've had better luck with mainstreamers.  In fact I'm at a 100% conversion rate with non bitcoiners so far!

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1057676.0

Don't waste your time in the Bitcoin section I tried a couple of time to tell people respectfully about Getgems but got only ignorance I also asked the mods to not move the thread cause I believed it was a Bitcoin subject not an altcoin. The thread was moved within an hour..
909  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin killer app has arrived on: May 13, 2015, 12:30:53 PM
I use to think the Alt community were a bunch of idiots but now I see many in hardcore bitcoin only crowd are just as foolish.

How exactly is a messenger app that has a Bitcoin wallet that allows you to send bitcoin or the token of gems a stupid proposition. What annoys me is IF this app is successful then Bitcoin will benefit but at the same threw nothing but insults at it. The beauty of the app is that it doesn't needs the gulag of Bitcoiners but has the ability to break out into much larger numbers than Bitcoin. Have you seen the numbers for some of these messenger apps, even unpopular ones have a million or two users.

I can see the personality of the guys who missed out on the early days of Bitcoin will miss out here too. Why should anyone in the mainstream care about Bitcoin if the community is so unable to approach new ideas like the posters here? I just hope the bitcoin community isn't as dumb and partisan as the posters here..
910  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GEMZ]| SOCIAL MESSAGING APP THAT PAYS | iPhone Beta is Live | on: May 13, 2015, 09:41:57 AM

This is why Getgems is the only altcoin I believe in. If it gets even 1% of those messenger apps user base it would have more users than Bitcoin which would justify a billion dollar market cap and would boost Bitcoin a lot. I wish Bitcoin users would get behind this app more than they seem to do, it's in their best interests.

All getgems needs is some decent viral marketing now to have a shot at being massive. What other messenger app pays its users? Getgems is unique among messenger apps so has a real chance. I really hope getgems has a hot marketing department.

+1

I guess the core community here also have a responsibility to kick start the user base. I'll do what I can once the airdrop starts.

well looks like an intresting apps came into market without even informing me .thats too bad butbi loved the apps and already shared it too some of my friends and alsobi have recommendwd them to use it..btw is there any way to get free bitcoins from this apps like getting rwward or anything

You can't earn Bitcoin but obviously the Gems you can earn you can buy Bitcoin with on exchanges like Polinex. At the moment you earn by inviting friends but soon you will receive also from daily airdrops that calculate how much you get on various factors like how many Gems you own and how many people you have invited etc.

Am I reading this wrong (I don't twitter), some teen fashion blogger whatever, called Chelsea is tweeting about Gems?

She has like 350,000 followers.

Has there been any attempts to get this onto a college canpus.  That's how it seems like these go viral.

i think that the best way is with t-shirts, the gem logo and a slogan like "messaging that pays"

The airdrop is going to be the best time to start inviting a lot of people but also is suspect many newbie users first question will simply be 'What can I buy with them?"

To take Getgems to the next stage there needs to be either an absolute idiot proof way to convert Gems to BTC or fiat (ideally BTC) so users can see the value by buying something or having the 'potential' to buy something. Or/and have somewhere you can actually buy something with Gems even if its limited at first like say an annual subscription for Spotify or Amazon credits etc.

My personal belief is either you can make a nice simple conversion to Bitcoin inside the wallet or Getgems produces a Getgems branded 'conversion site' or webpage thats maybe connected to the existing Getgems site. There you can better set out a simple process for converting to Bitcoin and an explanation of where you can use your Bitcoin etc. Putting it in app unless its done brilliantly could clutter the app or just confuse people. A link to a conversion page 'might' be the more elegant option. Would love to hear what the thoughts of the team are on conversion and usage of gems generally. I wonder if the team is more thinking to use the tokens in app for app related functions mainly like whatever service it hopes to add later. Its early days but a vision for the long term would be nice to hear.

Just off the top of my head I wonder if a tie up with an online music providers would be awesome so you could use tokens inside of the app to pay for a music streaming/downloading site. We would be knocking two birds with one stone, monetisation of music and messaging! Any streaming service could gain in revenue and they can worry about converting to fiat etc, its a win win situation for both plus a hot area at the moment on the internet.

916  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GEMZ]| SOCIAL MESSAGING APP THAT PAYS | iPhone Beta is Live | on: May 06, 2015, 01:46:58 PM
I was a little surprised how many bugs turned up in the first iOS just because I thought it would of been more polished before a long wait to get into the Apple store BUT honestly the bugginess of at least the Android app if that's even a word  Smiley is a bit overplayed. The app isn't much more buggy than any other app or mobile game I've ever played cause they all tend to crash etc every now and again etc. Generally the app works, period.

So the truth is most people wont run away from an app due to a few bugs. I personally am waiting for the daily airdrop to be in place before I try to convert anyone cause I think this what will hold peoples attention and a few bugs won't change that much I believe.

When we released the iOS app, there were major updates to our backend and Telegram servers. We could have delayed the initial release but we believe that with the community help and data analytics from active users the development speed will be much faster, and this is indeed true.

[the new version 1.1.4 in the picture was released May 03, 2015, since than we had 1 crash report]

And I completely understood why you did what you did...I've yet to see you and your team make a bad decision, trust me I don't ass kiss, I genuinely have confidence in the team.

Can you give some 'rough' clue on when airdrop might happen?  Grin
917  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][GEMZ]| SOCIAL MESSAGING APP THAT PAYS | iPhone Beta is Live | on: May 06, 2015, 01:23:41 PM
That is true, but I think you need to understand as well that promoting this app right now to non-Bitcoin users is tricky, in the sense that most people will walk back to Whatsapp as soon as small bugs start occuring. I have already inivited most of my tech savvy friends, but I will wait with iniviting the the masses until it is more stable and most features are working.

Another thing. I checked how much data I have been using over the past weeks and I was quite shocked to see that Getgems almost used a gigabyte of data, while I only use it for a few small chats per day (maximum). This probably has to do with the fact that I have sent a few GIF's, but still I think this is something that should be tackled.

A lot of people have small data bundles and they won't use Getgems if it uses so much data.

Anyone else experiencing this?

I'm not worried one bit about it either. I guess my main underlying question is whether the Bitcoin community is going to embrace Getgems or not? I have my doubts honestly...

http://snip.ly/PPun#http://www.coindesk.com/review-getgems-ios-app-review/

Not that positive a review. It just cut and pasted facts and then came to a negative conclusion, why was 'Telegram users receive messages sent on GetGems' a con of the app?. I wonder if Coindesk did the review without Gems input, I feel like a sector of the Bitcoin coin community will have a default negative view of Gems. Its was unfair that the review didn't make clear the app was in almost beta. If it ever becomes clear the Bitcoin community are going to attack Getgems then they should be brushed off honestly. I hope the marketing team in Getgems doesn't focus too much on the gulag of the Bitcoin community and pushes past to 'virgin' territory. Once the app is polished, airdrop is working etc what I would love to see is reviews in Tech magazines like Wired or even completely new communities like e.g Skater Magazines, or a fashion magazines, colleges etc pushing out way beyond Bitcoin.

Well he doesnt' say anything which isn't true. The fact that it is still work in progress could indeed have been mentioned more clearly but then again even though this forum thread is titled iPhone BETA is live there is little that tells me it's still in PUBLIC BETA when getting introduced, download and install the app. Thus a fully functional, bug free app is expected. Everyone is eager to invited everyone but I personally think its still a little early to send an invitation to your mom and dad unless they are willing to go through a bumpy first few miles. Its like you say "Once the app is polished" - Until then you can't expect anyone to praise it to the moon. Its a great app just not ready for mass adoption. Besides that the GetGems team (who are doing a fabulous job) should not try to run faster then their boots can carry them. Pete Rizzo's article is not a negative article, it just indicates what stage GetGems is at. I like the term "Social Wallet" by the way.

I guess it wasn't terrible but it certainly wasn't glowing and it failed to really give credit to what GetGems is trying to achieve in terms of attention economy. Maybe I'm biased but a messenger app that sends an alt and Bitcoin like a text message in a relatively polished app deserves a lot of brownie points simply for being the first to do it.  The reviewer didn't highlight the obvious positives either cause they don't know enough about it or just an inbuilt bias toward a non Bitcoin project, either way I personally don't think it reflects the project positively. Especially as a major focus was on the bugs in the first release when you consider how buggy the early Bitcoin wallets were.

I mean honestly a Bitcoin website should be dancing with joy at a project like Gems that makes Bitcoin truly user friendly and potentially very viral. In my mind its the most exciting project in Bitcoin for the last year or so let alone alts. Personally I'm not concerned cause Gems is a project that if successful will leapfrog the Bitcoin community anyway. I just hope the app is polished and the word gets out sooner rather than later. Timing IS important, I spent a year telling the Qora community that but it fell on deaf ears.
