To clarify my opinion. Criticism constructive or not is crucial for development.

But many following the thread are tired of hearing the same irrelevant ones. We wish new users would think before posting.

But anyway new users are the lifeblood of any project. But I think Sia over the next 2 years will be so big and important it will be one

of the first cryptos where users will need us more than vice versa.
Ah don't sweat it" I guess it goes with the territory. I have to bite my tongue a lot when following this thread.  Grin as well as others in the past. Its just the nature of bitcointalk

Isn't it nice to have a great dev like Taek who is always addressing our concerns and doing his best to answer questions and keeps us informed  Wink

I can also see a point in time where company's/individuals would be willing to pay even more for SIA services because of its anonymity. That could possibly cause demand for SIA as the preferred way to cloud host. So really the sky is the limit. But I don't feel the in the early days we can be more expensive per dollar/GH

Exactly what I was going to say after reading your first paragraph.

lol, when we reach that point with SIA ill be glad I invested in coins and have tried to stay on top of SIA development. I just think this concept and having an exclusively mined coin to pay for the storage service is so cool.  Grin Its full circle.

It will have its own full blown global SIA economy from start to finish. I see the buy orders are building back up again too....
1623  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage - Working Beta - Currency has been released on: September 20, 2015, 08:57:47 PM
The future majority of hosts will likely be technical people. Sia's focus is not imo people to use to keep their photo in cloud for iphone.
It is for youtube or netflix or may youtube's competitor. Business that needs cheap reliable millions of terabytes to store.

This does not make sense. If the Sia network is to be used as cheap storage for businesses' massive storage requirements, where is that storage supposed to come from?

I assumed that Sia was about enabling unused storage on millions of devices around the world to be part of a massive network, which then entities with storage requirements could use.

Clearly, the millions of devices we're talking about belong to Average Joe and Jane. Thus, the client software must be dumb-proofed and simple enough to be used by a 'regular' person.

Again this is my opinion but it is based on dev words and logical vision of Sia.

I don't see millions of joes renting their unused 200 gb from their laptop. Running Sia and keeping the client open up and running long

enough to be considered  a reliable host. Certainly the more hosts the better and the beauty in Sia is anybody can rent their space.

But realistically Sia will be a success because it allows anybody to set up their own cloud business. I can aspire to take a piece of amazon

cloud's pie by going out and buying 200 terbytes of hdds. Announcing my space on Sia without registering as a business or any licenses.

Now I attract cloud users by setting my price to what I think will take business away from amazon and use my space. Although netflix

needs millions of terabytes to run their business, my 200 terabytes is one of many reliable "small host companies" that netflix uses to

stream to their customers.

All good points, just keep in mind that you would also be competing against other SIA host in terms of where you would have to set your price point, regardless of what Netflix or youtube etc. are paying in todays market place, or even just normal users like us. Ultimately all of us who will host on a larger scale will all have to be less than todays normal cloud hosting prices per GH/month to start.

I can also see a point in time where company's/individuals would be willing to pay even more for SIA services because of its anonymity. That could possibly cause demand for SIA as the preferred way to cloud host. So really the sky is the limit. But I don't feel the in the early days we can be more expensive per dollar/GH

Now I am sure some will have massive storage farms for hosting and will make a pretty decent steady SIA coin return from it, so long as the demand is there. But for mass global storage, I feel the little regular guy will have to be participating, and why not.. ya get paid for doing nothing,,, covers your cost of having the PC turned on lol

EDIT: And it will cover the cost of your own file storage mostly or at least help to cover cost.  Grin

Your correct, anyone running a open wallet can also set the amount of hard drive storage they wish to dedicate to SIA, with very little knowledge or effort. And get paid a little SIA for doing so. The issue now however, is opening the 2 required ports. That does require a little geekness" as it has to be done manually. Upcoming versions will have UPnP so opening the ports for hosting will not be an issue then. Taek correct me if I am wrong there.  Smiley
1626  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage - Working Beta - Currency has been released on: September 20, 2015, 06:01:42 PM
Its obvious we have a lot of new comers to SIA who have not been with it since the first on going still under development BETA  wallet. So they are trying to jump in in the middle of a major wallet upgrade and are easily getting discouraged.

Of course all new comers and folks that are interested and are willing to test and contribute are very welcome in here and to learn SIA up to the point it is at now.

All the criticism however is unwarranted by those who have not gone back through and simply read up to the point we are at now with the wallet. ALL of us involved understand the work that is yet to be done, and the bugs that are currently in 4.2, which Taek has addressed and is working on as we speak. The wallet does in fact work. Does it require a little geek type knowledge ? sure it does, no one has stated it is in full readiness for the world at large.

For those coming in and wanting to get familiarized with SIA, PLEASE read through the thread at least skim over it.. you will learn a lot but more than likely will get somewhat confused. There has been a lot of trial and error for most of us interested in SIA along the way but we take our lumps and learn from each other and keep moving forward.

It is a project under development plain and simple. Please don't be so fast to pass judgment on a project of this scope that is unlike any other crypto project. If your mentality is that of meaningless clone coins and wallets and the same old pump and dump shit coins and trying to make a few dollars, well then maybe SIA isn't for you in its current state. Wait for the final well tested version, then start enjoying all that SIA will have to offer  Wink

1627  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage - Working Beta - Currency has been released on: September 20, 2015, 03:04:21 PM
it works! ... (just gotta watch that little "siad" thingy) just shut that down properly if needed and its all good  Cheesy

Can you elaborate? I ran the 0.4.2 GUI and after shutting down noticed siad still running. I killed the process and when the GUI is restarted get the error message "siad exited with code: 0"

How exactly does one go about shutting down siad "properly" (linux?) and is there a way to recover from these corruption issues?

Edit: I managed to remove the consensus file and start over. That seems to fix it.

Question: Where can I find a mining how-to? I downloaded Sia-UI-v0.4.2-beta-linux64.tar.gz which does not seem to include a miner. I've seen GUI screenshots with a Miner tab, which my GUI also is missing. How do I go about accessing the mining options in the GUI?

TO AVOID CORRUPTING YOUR WALLET:

Try this if you must shut down "siad" after closing wallet. ( if you going to restart your PC etc. ) Otherwise leave siad running as a process.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1060294.msg12410622#msg12410622

and this easier short cut to CMD prompt

You can shift+right click the SIA folder and open a command prompt with the location already set. Then type >siac stop from that path in CMD after the >

Hope this helps to avoid corrupting your wallet again.

The current price of Sia which is 11 satoshi is quite depressing.
From a previous peak of 36 satoshis 11 days ago and now down to this.
Now is the time to load up on coins. Soon as new wallet releases with fixes and the word spreads the price will move back up. Its just one of those coins that reflects the state of development with SIA. Which is completely unlike all other coins that way.  Smiley

If coin price drops a hair more I am going to scarf up a ton. Hit 10 a couple weeks ago, then shot back up to mid 20's or so.... cha ching lol Buyers market right now again.

Ya all the chatter of lost coins and buggy releases and all, surely can't help coin value but it is in beta.. lol, but ill say it again ... even the 4.2 wallet now, still kicks azz!! it works! ... (just gotta watch that little "siad" thingy) just shut that down properly if needed and its all good  Cheesy

Everyone hang tight the best is yet to come Smiley

Just for the record, I have used every wallet since day one. I have never lost any coins, even after 2 corrupted wallets.... once corrected those coins always where there. Of course you need to unlock the 4.1 if ya want to see them  Wink

Bugs will be worked out. I am confident Taek and the others will perfect this wallet which is a true work of genius.  Smiley

Well good for you..
Maybe you haven't actually 'used' the wallets like making transactions... but I see more people complaining about losing coins for a few months now(when was 3.3.2 released?) .  I've lost about 50% of the coins on 3 different occasions and on 3 different wallets..

These issues have never been addressed appropriately and the devs only keep pushing for the next buggy release..
I wasn't bragging Mishax, only making a point. Its wise to always test your new wallet on another pc with a limited amount of coins only, rather then the one with your bulk of coins.

And yes I have used the wallets in everyway since June 7th, hosting, uploading mp3 files, transferring coins to test wallets from main wallet, mining, sending coins to main from mining rigs wallets, uploading coins and selling on Poli, withdrawing coins from Poli back to main wallet and sold some in the early days to those that needed some for testing before Poli... so to your insinuation I haven't used the wallet? well

As a user be cautious and test everything with small amounts of coins before risking you stash  Smiley

PS: I guess there is always a chance I could lose my coins at some point but it won't be because I didn't exercise prudence while in beta..... and I have stayed on top of what others in here have suggested in solving problems or work arounds to correct as in the corrupted wallet issue... cause I wasn't smart enough to figure out what went wrong on my own...  Grin
1632  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Sia - Decentralized Storage - Working Beta - Currency has been released on: September 17, 2015, 07:54:47 PM
Is it safe to use 3.3.3 version ?
It seems to work better for me (mining, sync, balance... I do not speak about files hosting).
I still have the bulk of my coins stored on .0.3.3.3 wallet, and seems to work fine for mining still. (Just ain't found no blocks in a while) lol

I think there is hard fork coming up at block 21,000 so not sure if its wise to have any coins stored on .0.3.3.3 as that approaches?

Just so:
Have anyone contact bittrex to add Siacoin!? We have volume...

They won't add it, they don't like adding unique coins/assets , that is probably why they didn't add Ether which had and still has massive volume..  or Maidsafe, or w/e..
They mainly add shitcoins and scamcoins which are copy-pasta and easy to operate..

They did eventually add ETH, but yeah I agree with your sentiment. Poloniex will keep even low volume coins that hold a strong place in crypto history. I remember when Bittrex delisted Peercoin but then added Nubits. No rhyme or reason.

Edit: well I guess they did add Peercoin back on Bittrex. I stand corrected. Anyhow, that was not your point. Bittrex does love to add scamcoins as long as they have the 3 BTC to pay.
Ya Bittrex Richie luvs to cash in on the scam coins... watch em pump and dump and make a nice quick buck for sure....  Grin

Ok, to stop siad on W7: NOT USING TASK MANAGER

Using CMD prompt, change directory (cd) to - example command line: cd C:\Users\XXX\Desktop\Sia-UI-v0.4.2-beta-win64\Sia-UI-v0.4.2-beta-win64\resources\app\Sia   (or wherever you have you SIA 4.2 directory) in my case it is on my desktop.

Then type: siac stop

Got the message: Sia daemon stopped

Restarted wallet, unlocked it, all good.

Just not sure if I did not do the above step to close siad, and I do a PC restart will that corrupt file again? I don't feel like testing that lol.... in the event of a power failure, PC shut down etc. that could result in corrupt files again.... we will need a better way to totally close siad in the future so there is NO risk of corruption in any way  Wink

You can shift+right click the SIA folder and open a command prompt with the location already set.

Or just make a batch file.
Hey neat trick!  Wink

Sure is a quicker way to get there, skips the cd part lol

Thanks for that reminder Smiley

How mining of SIA? Where to take the instruction? There is mining pools for SIA?
Give detailed links.

If the developer make make a python module for the algorithm I can add it to my pool.
I know there is plans for a pool, but its on the back burner while other areas of development take priority. Mining is all solo since launch. I have mined on xpool before, all good. I'm sure in time everyone would be glad to see you and others get involved. Stayed tuned in here. Taek is the lead dev for SIA.  Wink

Yeah, good question. I'd use Siac to avoid the possible inconvenience, which is what it is. I don't like the fact that I have two wallet files, one for the imported wallet and one for the new. I wonder if I should just send all my coins associated with the imported address to the new seed associated address. Hm... maybe do a few tests first.
IDK what to say on that one myself, not sure of the differences it may have?  I still have the bulk of my coins sitting in a separate laptop on 0.3.3.3 until I feel 110% confident in 4.2. I had a few hundred coins in the legacy wallet (0.3) I imported from, into 4.2 for testing. All seems to be ok, and I have sent a few of those coins to Poli as well from 4.2. Let us know what you find out if you test that out  Smiley

What OS do you use?

So for those of us who killed siad using task manager, does this mean we have also lost our coins and any uploads stored in new wallet? Hard to imagine that.
No you still have your coins : try deleting resources\app\Sia\consensus\*
or
- copy your resources\app\Sia\wallet\*
- start with a fresh install, but copy & paste the wallet directory and start the client.

Ok, Option 1 is the way to go!  Wink

All good!

Coin balance is correct and sitting at block 16448. password works fine, showing host etc.

Conclusion: If you corrupt your data base, delete consensus file, Kill siad (if running) restart wallet, let it fully sync up, then unlock wallet.

PS: I still don't see my file I had uploaded? not a biggy right now Smiley

Just not sure after closing wallet again if we should just let siad process stay running? oh well.

If you want to close the daemon remember to use siac stop not your task manager or you will be back to square one.
Sounds good
THX!

I guess what I am wondering is if I close the wallet etc and reboot my PC will that not cause the database to corrupt again? if I don't first stop siad using siac to stop?
