861  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: You can only use bitcoin maximalist strategy to succeed in the market on: June 14, 2023, 05:54:20 PM
The price of the market for sometimes have not been moving up like what mist young investors expected. The market have been challenging to most investors. The only way young investors can overcome the recent price of the market is to use bitcoin maximalist strategy to invest in bitcoin.
You can not become a Bitcoin maximalist if you are new in this market and only join it a few months.

Quote
The maximalist have so much confidence in bitcoin, they believe in bitcoin no matter how tough the price in the market is, and they consider bitcoin as the best investment than any other cryptocurrency.
They have such strong and unchangeable confidence because they have many things behind. Knowledge about Bitcoin, experience in the market and already got profit from Bitcoin investment.

A newbie must do many things to become a Bitcoin maximalist and very first important mark, earning profit from Bitcoin investment. When you have profit, cash it out, you will increase your confidence. As said, you must be tested by the market especially bear market with massive fud to upgrade from newbie to a senior investor and a long time later, a Bitcoin maximalist.

Anyway Bitcoin maximalist is kind of extreme, you don't need to be them to hold your bitcoin as a real Bitcoin investor.
862  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Marketplace to sell gift cards with bitcoin with low fees on: June 13, 2023, 07:52:24 PM
I am not a fan of gift card trading because many risk with this trading type: scam, fake invoice, rip off, etc.

[LIST] Gift cards providers can help you with a longer list of Gift card trading platforms which I personally would not prefer to use. I don't prioritize margin profit if I have to sacrifice safety.

863  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin gift to wife on wedding. on: June 13, 2023, 03:18:42 PM
Although I still studied, I invested a small amount in Bitcoin. I will get married if I get a good job. Many people give many things to their wives as wedding gifts, I have a different plan. I am planning to gift bitcoin to my wife on her wedding day. Bitcoin is still illegal in my country so I invested with caution. On my wedding day I want to gift half of my investment to my wife.
Should I gift bitcoin to my wife?
If I am not wrong, in most countries, by laws, all assets two couples have during their marriage period are considered as co-owned by wife and husband.

I know that you want to make your wife happy but is it necessary that bitcoin you have will be considered as co-owned by your wife if you buy it after your wedding, with a valid marriage certificate.

In addition, it is risky if your wife does not know about Bitcoin, steps to keep it safe. You can teach your wife but probably she will have less experience than you and worse practice than you.

Lastly, it is not her key, not her bitcoin. You create that wallet, give it as a gift to your wife but you know the wallet private key and you can get it back anytime.

See the warning below:

Quote from: Blockchain Explorer
If you are withdrawing funds from an exchange, it is okay. If you're moving funds to another wallet, do not transfer the whole amount to another address. It greatly compromises your privacy.

The question is how? What is the security threat here?

Note: The quote is not clickable because I don't want to reveal the transaction involved for privacy reasons.
It is about change address and UTXOs.

If you notice, when you withdraw your bitcoin from your exchange account, that exchange will proceed your withdrawal request together with other users. They will make so-called batch payment to multiple users in one transaction. And they always have leftover amount of bitcoin in their wallet.

Back to that warning. If you send bitcoin to yourself, you will move all your bitcoin from address A to address B. It's very likely you will move your bitcoin like this.

You can use the two blockchain explorers to check some transactions and see their analysis results and warnings.
They have some guides, articles about transaction privacy.
865  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: from closed source to open source wallet[what is the risk] on: June 12, 2023, 12:19:00 PM
Much more easier and simple to do than complex but less secured.
Import your private key from a closed source wallet to an open source wallet is like you drop your house keys somewhere and can not find them. Your next response is bad, you just order someone to make keys to open your house locks but what if your lost keys found on the street by someone, who will able to enter your house later.

You don't know what will happen if you response like this. If you don't want to bet your luckiness with your coins, don't do this.

You must move your coins to a new wallet and you have two options. Option one is recommended by hossenimir. Option two is above, sweeping.

Sweeping your private keys into Electrum

867  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Any way to display my total bitcoin balance over multiple electrum wallets? on: June 11, 2023, 12:30:32 PM
You can import some public keys into one Electrum wallet, watch-only.

After that, you will total balance of all your wallets but because it is a Watch-only wallet, you only can watch its balance and can not spend your bitcoin.

How?
File > New/ Restore
Create a new wallet
Import Bitcoin addresses or private keys.

With your question, copy and paste all Bitcoin addresses you want to import, each address per line, click Next to finish.
868  Other / Meta / Re: Why is this system not set up for the Bitcointalk forum? on: June 10, 2023, 11:32:48 PM
- Why is email confirmation not requested during account registration? I have checked that it is possible to open a forum account with an email address that does not exist or has not yet been created.
It's freedom.

It's a Bitcoin forum and you can sign a Bitcoin message to prove your account ownership for account recovery.

Quote
- Email OTP is not asked during password change. But why the OTP of the current email is not asked even when changing the account email address?
To change your email address, you will need to type your current password.

Quote

- There is a Secret Question facilities. which is work as a second password.  but anyone can remove it after logging in the account without giving any answer or verifying any OTP.
It was disabled long time ago after that if anyone use a secret question, that account will be locked.

- Where all platforms have 2FA option for their users, why this forum has not put this option in the user account for security reasons.
2FA was asked many times. It won't be deployed on SMF-based forum, this one.

You can request it for a new forum, Epochtalk. New forum software
869  Other / Meta / Re: Change the logo board and subboard on: June 10, 2023, 03:18:32 PM
If in future, the forum has its mobile application, I will not install it.

Mobile app would compromise the privacy of forum members. At the moment we ca use TOR to get complete privacy. The app can designed by integrating TOR some of the members can say that. Still it won't be as flawless as TOR browser. To view the forum on mobile devices is bit of a work. It is for the best of everyone here and me to use the forum on a laptop or a desktop.
You can use Tor browser to surf the forum together with capcha bypass code.

I implied more about security of your device, not about privacy, in my previous post. Many hacks can happen on your devices if you install too many applications, softwares like a senior Bitcoin developer Luke Jr.

Therefore, I would like to avoid as many installations on my devices as possible. About a forum application, texting on mobile is not my favorite.
870  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How do I secure my wallet on: June 10, 2023, 02:30:26 PM
Electrum is a non-custodial wallet which means that it gives you full access to your private keys. Since electrum is open-source and its code has been reviewed by many people, you can be sure that it's secure enough.

Note that if you want your fund to be completely secure, you should run electrum on an airgapped device. Any online device is always prone to hacking.
Electrum wallet is free, open source, non custodial and good to use. It has many 'modes' to use like single signature wallet, multi signature wallet, cold storage ...

Always download it from the official website : https://electrum.org/#download and verify the wallet.

OP, when you use a non custodial wallet, always backup your wallet. Without backups, you will lose your bitcoin if your original device gets technical problems and can not be recovered.
871  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Reminder] hey bitcoiners, Did you forget to read the updates on terms&policies? on: June 10, 2023, 12:05:46 PM
How often do you check if there are any changes or updates on the platform you are using?
If they don't read Terms of Service (ToS) before or after creating their accounts, they will not mind to follow up ToS upgrades.

Many people use exchange accounts and given receiving addresses like their non custodial wallets to store their coins. With this mind, they think their coins will be safe and they don't mind to check their accounts after long time. With those people, reading ToS, following its changes are something impossible.

Following it regularly is good but not enough, because they can announce changes and shut down their platforms. Therefore following this

873  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which platform is safe to store Bitcoin and can’t be hacked ? on: June 09, 2023, 02:24:27 PM
We used to think so, but I think that after everything that has happened and what is currently happening with some hardware wallets, we should no longer treat them in the same way as before. The only way we can be somewhat sure that someone will not hack us is to create an airgapped wallet, and after that to protect the backup by saving it in the safest possible place, noting that we should always have one additional backup that would be stored in some alternative location. Everything else is a risk, and the only difference is how big that risk is.
Even no bad upgrades like Ledger wallet with Ledger Recovery Service, the best wallet for each person is what he can afford to have it, if not free, must afford to buy it, and can use it appropriately in security and privacy.

Like if I don't have a hardware wallet, I can still use Bitcoin Core or Electrum wallet with cold storage or multisig setup. Free and good to use so it is best for me.

874  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which platform is safe to store Bitcoin and can’t be hacked ? on: June 09, 2023, 12:13:16 PM
You should not store your bitcoin on any platform. If you store it on any platform, you fall into this.
Reminder: do not keep your money in online accounts

Store your bitcoins in non custodial wallet, if open source it is better, because you will own private key and entirely control your bitcoin and transactions you want to make.

875  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some possible ways to avoid phishing attacks and scams on: June 09, 2023, 11:52:42 AM
usually i have a Personal Computer that I use currently so it won't be of that bad to me, but most at times i often use my smartphone reply some comments over here.
From what you said so far, I will logout my mail from Smartphone to safeguard my fund since my phone can get stolen anytime.
It is a good prevention but always remember that you should never store all eggs in one bag. Eggs in this context is your coins, tokens. Don't store all of them in one wallet and on one device.

Especially if you use that device to connect to Internet and do many things which might expose your computer to virus, malwares, trojans and so on.

A biggest part of your capital should be stored offline, in an airgap device, cold wallet or hardrware wallet.
876  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some possible ways to avoid phishing attacks and scams on: June 09, 2023, 08:35:10 AM
What about those who do not have a second device to store their 2FA, does it mean they can't use same device install their 2fa?
They can but if they can have a second device for 2FA, it's better. My post is a reminder for people who can have two devices but carelessly login all things in only one device, including 2FA. Like if you have a computer, you can login your email, exchange account on it, and 2FA will be on your smartphone.

Imagine, if your computer is compromised, your fund won't be stolen because 2FA is on your phone which is not connected to your computer.
Same for if you lose your smart phone, nobody can steal your fund with only 2FA on that device.

Quote
Please I am only asking to know because I am planning of getting it installed in my phone but reading this gets me paused because I do only have a single device which is my smartphone and I don't have any money to further get another device.
Just don't login your email on your phone. Only login your email if you want to withdraw your fund from exchanges.

Let me explain it
  • Usually exchange will ask for confirmation codes in 2FA and email when you submit a withdrawal request.
  • If you don't login your email on that phone, you won't lose your fund even that smartphone is lost.

Always backup your 2FA code. You will need that code to recover your 2FA later.
877  Other / Meta / Re: Change the logo board and subboard on: June 09, 2023, 08:27:59 AM
I think if there is an application then you are not prohibited from writing on the website. like Quora, it has an app and a web version. That Quora is a question and answer platform so answers can be more than 1,000 characters.
Quora, Reddit, many platforms but if it is a platform for text-based discussions, typing on mobile is painful.

Quote
In bitcointalk, we only write about 100-200 characters.
Are you sure all posters limit themselves to 100 or 200 characters for each post?

Quote
The app also makes it simple to check notifications when you're outside
Depends on each person's need but don't let notifications ruin other more important things.

Quote
Do you mean that PC/Laptops are safer than mobile devices? I think there is no guarantee for your statement about this
Safer or not, depend on how you use your laptop, PC and mobile devices but generally you are more easily to lose your mobile devices than losing your laptop.

You misunderstood my post. I mean security of your device, whatever it is laptop, pc, mobile, will be in risk if you install too many softwares, applications. The less softwares, applications on your devices, the better, in security-wise.
878  Other / Meta / Re: Change the logo board and subboard on: June 08, 2023, 11:35:22 PM
10 years ago, we didn't think there would be smartphones. 10 years later we don't know what will happen. Maybe people will use smartphones more for typing...
It is not about smart phones but about inconvenience when you have to type text for your posts on smart phones, without key boards and with limited screen size. If you type a short post, it can be usable but if it is a long post, it becomes a problem.

Clearly, lengthy of a post does not automatically cause it zero, low or high quality.

Security of your device is another problem. If I have choice, I don't install many applications on my device. In addition, it can harm your privacy too as applications can trace your activities.
879  Other / Meta / Re: Change the logo board and subboard on: June 08, 2023, 01:49:58 PM
I would also like to propose that bitcointalk has own app
Another old and repeatedly question/ suggestion.

About an application, mobile application for bitcointalk forum, it is unnecessary in my opinion. Maybe young users will like applications as they can ask for applications everywhere.

Old school guys might think different including me.
  • We don't need to install too many applications on our devices. First, waste of device resource. Second, it contains more risky security.
  • Most important, the forum is a text-based one for text discussions so I am not feel convenient when typing on my phones.
880  Other / Meta / Re: Change the logo board and subboard on: June 08, 2023, 01:27:54 PM
I see the logo on the left of the board and the subboard looks like a triangle. Would it be more interesting if it was changed? Like the BTC logo for bitcoin and other logo for another board and subboard.
Some members in the community will complain that those new board icons make the forum like a circus. The forum is kind of for old school style and they don't like cartoons, animations and colorful things. I am not against your idea but with my experience here, I think it will not be supported by community.

If currency icons for altcoins are not considered and deployed officially, you would not expect your proposal will be approved.

Can administrators do that?

Maybe it's not that important.
It's not important and admins won't be ready to spend time doing this.
