Blocks in shorter chains (or invalid chains) are not used for anything. When the bitcoin client switches to another, longer chain, all valid transactions of the blocks inside the shorter chain are re-added to the pool of queued transactions and will be included in another block.

The reward for the blocks on the shorter chain will not be present in the longest chain, so they will be practically lost, which is why a network-enforced 100-block maturation time for generations exists.

These blocks on the shorter chains are often called "orphan" blocks. This is because the generation transactions do not have a parent block in the longest chain, so these generation transactions show up as orphan in the list-transactions RPC call.

English translation.... when we get an orphaned block we get screwed... at least it wasn't an hour or 2 long. Grin

difficulty dropping? I don't see it unless BTC to USD drops to $200.00 or less.
what I do see is another 40,000 TerraHashes being applied before the next adjustment

have to consider the fact, each time the difficulty goes up the low "baller hashers" will just stop and try to sell off their old miners no one wants which i think falls about 25% of the total hashing.

price dropping and difficulty goes up i see a lot of lower end hashers just stopping, in return is good for the rest of us Smiley

if only that could be true... difficulty hasn't dropped in years

I could be wrong but I could've swore the diff dropped not long ago (8 weeks or so)...the drop % was very low but it can and does happen...just nowhere near as often as increases cause there are more people getting into BTC mining versus those getting out of mining

Hi all, Just a question, how many believe that the miners who actually produce the Bitcoin used on the open market, should have a heavier influence on the worth of a Bitcoin? After all it is manufacturered by a machine (miner) and miners bare the brunt of the cost to manufacture/create a Bitcoin. I personally feel that since Bitcoin is traded that the speculators have way too much Wall St. like power over the price of Bitcoin. On some exchanges traders have sold coin from one wallet to another below cost in order to drive down price and take advantage of those miners looking to pay the expenses of mining. I believe I have away that will only need cooperation of miners and will not cost any miner anything.

it varies. generally with slush u will earn slightly more than other pools. but u can also earn 0 from a 24 hour block happening!
but it ALWAYS averages out in favor of slush...

so if u r not a fan of math then Slush is not the place as u will insist the results are wrong when they are not.
