My wallet is not syncing. I thought I'd fixed the problems. It's stuck at 17 hours behind with two active connections to the Devcoin network. I had sent some over to CoinGather and when that deposit didn't show up in my account the next morning I tried to run my Devcoin wallet again to see if the send had confirmed and that's where it's stuck hours and hours later.

Am I going to need to download the entire block chain every time I want to open my wallet? I'd rather not have to leave the wallet always on either.

Any ideas?

Did you download the 2 receiver files as outlined above?

http://faucets.cryptoplace.net/receivers/receiver_69.csv
http://faucets.cryptoplace.net/receivers/receiver_70.csv

Once the wallet gets stuck at around 4 weeks behind, close it and add these 2 files to /roaming/devcoin/receiver/

Yep. Did that. Wallet finally synced last time. Then I closed it. Now it's stuck. I'm afraid that if I just close it it will then give me the "failed to find best block" error message which will mean I'll have to download the entire block chain. again.
Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

Anyone have a guesstimate on total supply?

You mean total coins issued since inception?

Yes. I also wonder how much of that is abandoned or lost wallets.

Can't tell or know how many Devcoins are lost or abandoned. On coin creation, I wrote a small piece at Devtome dealing with this: http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=the_value_of_devcoin

May I take this as an opportunity to ask support for the up keeping of the Devtome site (costs of hosting)?

Hmm. When I close my Windows client, it works fine when reopened - just has to catch up is all.

Great news on the block explorer.  Let me know when that gets completed.  Thanks Microguy!

I tried that. The difference is it's now stuck on 40 hours behind (before it was stuck on 17 hours behind for hours and hours). I haven't seen that there is a receiver 71 to add to the folder, and I can't think of anything else to do.

~~

The CryptoID Devcoin block explorer is now up and running! https://chainz.cryptoid.info/dvc/

~~

Here are a couple of notes (above my pay grade) from Fairglu for the developers:

The wallet compiled fine AFAICT and is now synchronizing, there were however apparently two leftover debug lines in receiver.h (search for "Number of" messages) which I have commented, let me know if I am somehow on wrong code

Explorer and wallet synchronizing at https://chainz.cryptoid.info/dvc/

Please check if the information so far is correct!

Also I have not read too much on the wiki (mea culpa), but the receiver csv files do list addresses, I could tag them if desirable (and if yes, let me know the label(s))

Please give some advice on how to best respond and I will answer him.

I contacted Gliss and he added the new block explorer to Coinmarketcap.

http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/devcoin/

Now there's a "Market Cap" displayed again along with "Circulating Supply".

Thanks for all the hard work, MicroGuy.

Indeed, well done @MicroGuy! Yet, we still have the official block explorer which is Libre Software so everyone is welcome to contribute with pull requests and feature requests:

I have create a pull request. I hope that the right devs see it
https://github.com/coinzen/devcoin/pull/33

Thanks @aatheus! It was a pleasure to merge that pull requests, I hope more to come!

People! Everyone! We still have control of the source code so we can bring Devcoin back on track. Hence I'm not a C++ expert, I know programming pretty well I can read new pull requests and to merge the right ones. Also, devtome.com might seem lost but we can always start a new wiki and build new assets.

Regarding the problem with downloading receiver_xx files, guess that this is a great opportunity to reorganize. Those who want to help just bring in new mirrors, I can take care of maintaining the new receivers files so we start re-distributing Devcoin to the new team of contributors starting next block, along with building a new countdown.

There is just a little detail here. We need the owners of hash power to jump in and update their miners, I have no contact with any of them but if you are listening and willing to bring Devcoin back to life, PLEASE HELP!

While we are on that, we can still test the new receiver files infrastructure in a test network, anybody willing to help please just say so in a private message to me, here in bitcointalk.

May Devcoin be back and stronger!

I can't help out with the mining side but I can continue to provide a mirror. Toss over links to files as needed and I'll make sure they're tossed up, Smiley.

Also, definitely up for a restructuring and a re-creation of Devtome. Hopefully more efficient.

I got my wallet working again, by re-downloading the entire block chain. Hopefully I don't have to do that every time. I'll leave it open and running for now.

That seems like a good idea. When I get some time I'll educate myself on exactly how the block rewards are distributed.

It might help if we could stop the bleeding of these coins back to CoinGather for a while. This list makes the current bleeding a little easier to track: https://chainz.cryptoid.info/dvc/#!rich

Of course funds are needed to maintain the network. So there's nothing wrong with exchanging the reward into LTC, BTC, or USD as long as the money is being put to good use. I'll try to learn more ASAP about how this was originally designed to work. Tongue

I feel I should warn Devcoin users about MicroGuy.

I am suspicious as to the reasons why MicroGuy is paying so much attention to this coin, while ignoring the issues with his own, especially given his history of deleting posts from his own coin (Goldcoin) thread from users who are reporting problems with his wallet daemon & banning them from posting there again. He is also closing/deleting posts from users who are reporting problems with the GoldCoin wallet daemon on the github repo for GoldCoin and banning them from posting again (me included):

https://github.com/goldcoin/goldcoin/issues/11  (some posts deleted also)

Any mention of wallet problems on either his BCT or github thread is rapidly deleted & the user banned. This is not how development is done & any person/dev who censors/ignores/deletes posts from users regarding wallet faults or problems should be considered dubious at the very least. There is no place for censorship in crypto, especially on github - it goes against the whole ethos of both. Any dev who deletes/censors or bans users for reporting issues on Github is doing it because they either don't know what they are doing, they don't want anyone to know about it or they have some other shady/corrupt reason.

Yes, we devcoin users need all the help we can get for this coin, but not from devs who practice such blatant censorship in trying to hide issues with code.

I can post the messages MicroGuy deleted from his threads, as well as the PM's I got from him if required, but would like to keep this thread on topic

I advise extreme caution with this so called "dev".

There is no undue censorship. The only posts deleted are those disruptive or abusive in nature. Kind and helpful comments are encouraged and always welcome. Unfortunately, moderation is a necessary evil in a world with anonymous trolls and random mischief makers. Smiley

So far all you have done is demonstrate your own fear and insecurity through baseless accusations, name calling, and paranoid conspiracy theories.

EDIT: And just for the record you're the only person I've ever had to take the extreme measure of blocking from Github. Making Github reports attacking the developers and claiming "Goldcoin is not mineable" when it has a hashrate of nearly 2 GH/s is not constructive, and downright silly.

//Stuff here

I generally don't get involved with things like this as it seems like a personal matter but the information that's clearly visible to us shows the following:

1) IconFirm has a neg-rep and a claim to have a LOT of permabanned accounts already
2) IconFirm has NOT neg-repped MicroGuy
3) The only rep I see that's negative on MicroGuy is from 2013 and deals with censorship. Everyone can moderate their threads how they wish -- that's why it's an option

Also, MG has been around a lot longer. Unless there is REALLY convincing evidence that he's nefarious, I see no reason not to trust him.

Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I'm offering advice based on personal experience. Anyone who wishes to see the posts deleted by MG is welcome to PM me.

Edit:

@MG - Erm....that's not my account you are referring to - but thank you for confirming that you are indeed banning users who report problems on github.

Edit2:

1) IconFirm has a neg-rep and a claim to have a LOT of permabanned accounts already

Indeed. I have 1 neg-rep by a stalker/confirmed scammer who I have never talked to & who has a rep rating himself of -2022-11 who has posted once in the last 5 months. Read my reply to his neg-rep & draw your own conclusions, but I generally ignore rep ratings unless they are blatantly obvious.

2) IconFirm has NOT neg-repped MicroGuy

Indeed. Unfortunately the rep system on BCT is wide open to abuse (see above), so I only neg-rep confirmed scammers as a warning to other users. MG is not a scammer, that I'm aware of.

3) The only rep I see that's negative on MicroGuy is from 2013 and deals with censorship.

So it's not just me then...... Grin
