You're going to see more extremes now, that's what happens when you're a smaller share of the overall network.  The bad days will be extremely low, the good days will be much higher.  Each block is ~13% of expectation, so getting 4 blocks more than expected is now huge (160%), whereas in the past it was only a minor bump (115-125%).  In the same vein, 4 blocks less than expectation is now a 40% instead of 80%.

Thanks Smiley

Then, let's hope for good days to came sooner.

Cheers!

Look, all I'm saying is that ghash.io figured it out and does fairly well with over 4 times the hash rate of BTCGuild. mmpool.org figured it out with even more coins.

They didn't "figure it out".  There is the very real chance that one or more of their Bitcoin orphans were the result of worthless crapcoin daemons adding extra latency to their pool knowing of a new block or pushing out a new block.

Like today when BTCGuild lost block 308770 to slush.  Angry

That was just adding insult to injury after last night's block Sad.  But our luck with orphans has been fairly good, that was our first orphan in the last 300 blocks.

There is no contradiction whatsoever in those statements. If anything it is a validation of what eleuthria said about stability here. I have always attributed the stability of BTCGuild to eleuthria's skills as an operator and suspect that if he were running ghash.io it would be more stable. I still think that is the case, but I also believe him when he says that keeping merged mining simple is a significant reason for that stability here.

The marketing message to newer or less informed miners is that ghash.io has more value because of its lower variance and merged mining. It doesn't matter if that reason should not be significant, it only matters that the marketing works. People believe it and mine there.

Just sad to see the industrialization of mining. I am nostalgic for the time when it took effort and thought instead of just capital to get involved.

Can anyone tell me if I am completely missing something here?
If I go to bitcoinwisdom.com and look at difficulty, it predicts the next adjustment as being +13% even though the average block time is 10 minutes.   I realize their predictions are not accurate for the first days of a change, but is the average is 10 minutes shouldn't they be predicting 0%?

We're only a quarter of the way into this difficulty.  So there is allot of room to go either way.  But yes, if 6 blocks per hour is maintained all the way through then difficulty would stay the same, pretty much.  But I doubt that will happen and they probably doubt it too.

There was a massive increase in hashrate across the entire network so the estimate skyrocketed.  Since then the hashrate has actually been decreasing, one would guess, as the hardware is disconnected and prepared to ship to the people who actually own it.

Almost two hours since the last block!  It would be pretty sick for those of us who have hardware on order if due to an odd circumstance and awful luck the difficulty stayed the same or even ticked slightly down for just one round.  That would give a lot of S3 buyers a big ol' smile.

Lol, 8 blocks found yesterday with the last one being almost 5.5hrs ago.

With what I got running now (210Gh/s) and the 3Th I got coming online in the next 12-18hrs I'm supposed to average 0.09329440 BTC per day under current diff and I don't know if I'll get anywhere near that for a while with this luck.

Decisions, decisions, decisions...

Ghash seems to be finding around an avg of 45-50 blocks a day so I might have to go there if the first three to four days don't look good here after the new stuff comes on line. Even if it is only costing me $80 a month from a guy I know who has free electricity written in to his businesses rental contract where all my stuff is hosted.

I really love BTCGuild but I don't see how I'll be able to stay here if I don't average at least 0.08 / 0.085 a day here even though it should be around 0.093x

Either way, time will tell when the new stuff comes online tomorrow sometime.

^^^^^^^

So sad to hear that.

Have a patience, I can feel Good Luck on his way to our pool Smiley And he promises to stay a bit longer this time  Grin

P.S. I have almost 14TH/s and a huge loan on my ass, units are in datacenter, I still mine here. I argue everyday with my partner, to stay away from GHASH. It is hard, but I can't risk the future of BTC. I will blame myself for the rest of my life, if something goes wrong with BTC, while me being involved in that. Enough said...

Well, my equipment wasn't supposed to get to my collo guy til Monday with the S&H method previously chosen (UPS 3 day select), I forgot the 4th was Fri. That said, he loaned me 0.21x BTC to pay for 2day air so it all gets to him on the 3rd. That said... since it comes online tomorrow / later today, I'll let it roll through Sun. but if things don't look good by Mon I will have a decision to make, a hard one at that because BTCG has been good to me.

You could make 20BTC/day and it would mean nothing if the pool you mined on were to go over 51% and force a concerted attack and decided to go on their own fork.  If every miner focused on 1 or 2% gains at the expense of the whole network where would we be?

Lets say I settled for less, which isn't out of the realm of possibility. Just how "low" do I go because there is a tipping point for just about every one.

Like, knowing I should be getting around 0.093x a day, there's no way in hell I would stay on any pool if it was givin me like 0.03 for more than 2 days because lets be honest, there is bad luck where you might have one or two severely f'd up days like that.

I totally get the sentiment.  I have 3 expensive SP10s I am trying to at least earn back what I paid for them.  If I don't make back what I spent or at least close to it, then I just threw a good chunk of money away.  And let's not forget the electric bill as well.

Unlike most people I get ridiculously (sp?) cheap electric due to my friend who hosts for me at his business for basically $20 a month for every 1k watts. That said, I because of that have more room to play with but it doesn't mean I'm going to take too big of a hit willingly. As you said, I'm trying to break even which I have a better chance than most because of my low hosting costs. Once / even if I do break even, is still not a reason to take a hit to the proverbial wallet since there's nothing to technically lose once one breaks even on cost of hardware and has nothing to worry about but the electricity bill.

Either way, once the 3Th is up, I'll let it go til sunday to see where I stand.

Hey Michael, got a question for ya.

So on the "main" page where it shows active worker summary. Why when plugging in large miners like 1Th plus does that info take so long to ramp up / normalize ?

My collo guy plugged in my three dragons today, and this is what I saw after about 5 mins or so.

MoreBloodWine_Dragon0001   522.48 GH/s
MoreBloodWine_Dragon0002   974.58 GH/s
MoreBloodWine_Dragon0003   513.99 GH/s

And I'm just now starting to see things normalize well over an hr later on the site even though the miners backend always shows 1Th+

MoreBloodWine_Dragon0001   980.04 GH/s
MoreBloodWine_Dragon0002   993.90 GH/s
MoreBloodWine_Dragon0003   1,040.17 GH/s

How does something like this affect shares if at all since work is still being done at full ramp even though the Gh/s might show otherwise at first on the site.

The most likely cause is the miner was turned on and restarted once or twice before it was left alone.  The speed shown is an average.  The window starts with only 2 minutes of mining data, and then as more data is available (miner keeps running), it extends that average to a full hour.  If you turn on a miner and then tweak a setting and restart it, you'll have a gap in your shares which affect the speed estimate.

Additionally, if your workers didn't have their minimum difficulty set, the few minutes or so will be have some brief gaps due to constant difficulty adjustments until vardiff finds the proper level.  Some hardware is significantly worse at handling difficulty adjustments than others.

The pool has no way to know your actual speed, it can only make a best guess.  If your miner is turned on and left alone, it should reach an accurate estimate quickly.  But any time you turn a miner off, it will have an effect on the estimate (unless you hit 'Reset Stats' before turning the miner back on, which resets the flexible window used to estimate the speed as well).

I guess, because you did not put minimum Difficulty for your dragons to 1024?  Grin

I have 2 dragons, it takes 5 minutes to show correct hash rate. Check both in BTCGuild and your miners settings page. Make sure you have 1024 in both places.

Ty for the info Michael.

As to this quote, there was some tweaking done as Michael hinted at but the diff I got set for 512 on the workers page and 512 in the miner. Here's what's showing now since my query.

MoreBloodWine_Dragon0001   1,032.83 GH/s
MoreBloodWine_Dragon0002   1,014.02 GH/s
MoreBloodWine_Dragon0003   1,064.99 GH/s

Also, I'm no so sure that acts as a minimum in the dragon settings and here's why...

Difficulty Sel : 512 --Current difficulty:512

It's like whatever you set is what it's told to always run at  Huh

It is the starting difficulty. Why do you put 512? I have 1024 on both of my dragons...
