Russia Has Deployed BASTION Mobile Coastal Defense Missiles in the Crimea

http://www.matthewaid.com/post/85709316751/russia-has-deployed-bastion-mobile-coastal-defense

I never thought that there were ethnic Germans in Crimea. The Crimean peninsula is quite far from Germany. How many Germans were there? And why did they left Crimea?

The Crimean Goths were deported by Josef Stalin during the WW2. Until then, there were some 50,000 Germans living there (51,299 in 1939 census).

Out of the 27 districts which existed in Crimea prior to the WW2, two were considered to be German dominated (Telmansky and Büyük Onlarsky).

You're mistaken the two populations:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimean_Goths (probably extinct)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimea_Germans (the ones the article is about).
2122  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Donetsk, Kharkov, Lugansk - way to Russia. on: May 14, 2014, 06:24:37 PM
Another shitty article from the BBC. No mention about the 600,000 Russian speakers, who were forced to flee Ukraine during the last 3 months.

Ukrainian speakers leave Donetsk amid pro-Russia surge

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-27392074

Why do you call the article shitty , it's just what the title says , it's about the Ukrainians fleeing part of what was Ukraine.
Also , I don't remember that number of 600 000 even been mentioned. Kind a hard to believe.

Can't you be a bit more neutral Smiley ?

2123  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Meanwhile in Ukraine... Revolution. on: May 14, 2014, 06:16:57 PM
The figures just don't add up. The total GDP for entire Ukraine is around $170 billion. So around 60% of that was from Crimea?

The GDP figure of $170 billion might be the official figure, i.e not including the underground economy. In nations such as Ukraine, most of the economy remains hidden.

Why do you think he was referring to the gdp?
If my country would lose Dobrogea , which makes around 7% of the gdp the actual loses would be maybe two times the size of the GDP if you can even count them

Why no recreating the coin from scratch with new features the community wants (if any)? , different time block distribution of block rewards mining scrypt etc..
From my point of view it would be way better.

Are that many coins already mined?

If a new dev team wanted to fork and add more features, they certainly could.  But again, whatever is done, the premine would need to be killed.

The dev is sitting on half of the coins, 50% premine.

Just as the above poster has said about the community , it will be quite hard to find out somebody who is willing to take over a project that is not in the best shape rather than starting it as he please from strat.

But again , i'm no holder and i'm not a fan of "nation" coin so my view should be seen just as one of a casual visitor to the forum.

It's because once the community will act like a central bank (invalidating coins , decline transactions or anything close to that) there is always the problem it might do the same again but this time affecting all the users.
An example... increasing 10 times the total number of coins , or halving the coins currently held in the wallets.

The same discussion happened about the btc sized by the fbi , just check the reactions :

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=412041.0

And even if you claim the community wants it , it is best for the coin this way... do you really think the community (in this case the bagholders) will always make the best choices?

The community of any coin typically will vote on whatever best suits them short-term, and longterm be dammed --just human nature.

I should have clarified, when I agree the coin should be forked if the dev has truly vanished, I mean a new dev team would need to take over. The community can agree or not agree on destroying the premine (which would have to happen for the coin to continue). But longterm, a new dev team would have to take over. You can't just have a coin with nobody at all in charge.

And you can't have a former dev sitting on over half the coins in a premine, if a new team takes over. He can kill the coin whenever he so pleases if he ever cashes out.

Why no recreating the coin from scratch with new features the community wants (if any)? , different time block distribution of block rewards mining scrypt etc..
From my point of view it would be way better.

Is it possible to add a variable reward system based on the network hashrate? Similar to the difficulty, the reward could be larger (starting at 50 coins and going all the way to 100 coins) is the network hashrate is bigger then a given value..

e.g.

0-10MHs => 50 coins per block
10-20MHs => 55 coins per block
...
>100MHs => 100 coins

This way miners would likely try attract more miners in order to try to maximize their gains...

Please enlighten me how will you do this , and apply it. Without messing up the coin for real.

I've been saying that for a while now.... forking it + invalidating the 21 mill coins JP is holding. It doesn't matter if this is a scam or not. An inactive dev is reason enough.

Do you know that with this you're opening a Pandora box?

Also curious why you say this. It's only a pandora's box if the dev is active, or semi-active. If he truly vanishes, it's the only way to proceed.

It's because once the community will act like a central bank (invalidating coins , decline transactions or anything close to that) there is always the problem it might do the same again but this time affecting all the users.

Just for fun I highlighted those two.
Now it might sound like :
"In case of a conflict , Saudi Arabia will trash Israel in less than 3 days thanks to the US".

Well , that contradicts a lot of conspiracy theories around here Smiley

Possible scenarios, in case the conflict occurs. But a conflict will never occur, since both the nations are funded by the US. But that doesn't take away the fact that the Saudi military is much more capable than that of the Israelis. Demography as well, can matter a lot.

Well , that is an interesting discussion but it's off-topic for this subject.
If you want to open a thread on this (you're far more active than me in the politics) I'll sure keep an eye on it to see what people here think about it.

On topic , thanks for the answer on the punishment.
But now seriously , having to go each day through that it's like waiting in the death row.

2136  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ukraine rejects Russia Gazprom gas price hike on: May 14, 2014, 02:21:34 PM
I'm almost willing to bet that that they will not  pay a cent and they will still receive that gas.

Most probably that is going to happen. If Gazprom shuts off the gas supply to Ukraine, it will disrupt the flows to Central Europe. But I can foresee a lengthy and bitter legal battle.
There will never be a lack of customers for Russian energy. Sending shale oil to Europe (sometime in the future) will be very costly and dirty. It's just a mask for the impotence of the West to deal with need for Russian energy. It's just for domestic consumption. In fact, right now the US is giving money to the Ukraine coup regime to pay Russia for its gas bill.

If it were only domestic consumption I think the problem could have been solved , but unfortunately it's not
2137  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Qora | IPO | Escrow | 100% POS | New Source | Beta Available on: May 14, 2014, 02:15:04 PM
Doesn't anyone think we should move slower and have an incubation period where the coin has chance to develop and work out any function issues?

I feel like some are looking at it as a pump and dump rather than a potential beater of other coins. Being spread over tons of exchanges means one thing, low volume and unstable market if people try to sell. I've seen this before where people involved in NXT would be high fiving each other because they got on another exchange with the ultimate goal to get on Cryptsy!....and everytime the price dropped a bit more.

The developer may well disagree with me but I want to follow his timetable, plan and vision for the coin whatever it is so we are in lockstep with his vision. And if that means getting on tons of exchanges then cool..

I agree with this. Even if Qora was to create its own exchange which would be cool  Grin

Diluting the market place by having it on multiple exchanges is not a great idea. I would say have 1 official marketplace then write to all other exchanges not to add it till a certain date.

I know mintpal will take a lot to convince but poloniex should be more accommodating.
It will cost much to create own exchange , although it is sounds good. It is not easy to do it .
But if there is someone want to create , we will be very happy to see that.
In my opinion, it does not matter to get on many exchange.  One coin is good just because it can circulate. Technology just make the circulate be safer or more powerful, more lasting .
YES, if the coin get on many exchange, the price will not stabilize. But look into the future, the value of this coin is decided by how many people accept qora.

No one needs to create an exchange, just not farm out the coin to all the exchanges, maybe just a few quality ones.

We can't actually control this. All we can do is not trying to get to shitty exchanges and don't contact any exchange outside top 10. I'd say Dgex, Bter and Cryptsy is the best choice. Let's talk to them after launch and see how it goes. There's no rush anyway. As Graviton (Dgex owner) said (I actually didn't realise that) more exchanges for a new coin = more liquidity = lower price.

I think the mintpal is the best, but it don't accept the 2th gen coin.
But we can have a try, the first 2th coin get on mintpal , it sounds good.
But I think it is almost impossible.

This isn't directed at you and I try not to swear but seriously who gives a shit about Mintpal. Its just another exchange who has seemed to convince people its really important to get on there and people actually pay just to vote for a coin. Its the exchange of desperate men trying to pump some crap coin imo.

Compare the volumes mintpal<>cryptsy , and you;ll get your answer Wink

No it's just that almost everybody wants a new house with 10bc  which they spent half a cent acquiring and done nothing else.

Are they nuts?

Ukraine ready to resume water supply to Crimea on its own terms

http://en.itar-tass.com/russia/731557

What sort of silly excuse? Seriously. They cut off the drinking water supply because a bill for $146,500 was not paid? Then what should the Gazprom do to them, for not paying the $3 billion gas bill?

Quote
April 26, 2014, Ukraine shut the North-Crimean canal, by which Crimea receives 85% of the freshwater it needs

Quote
The poor technical condition of the canal reduced the standard throughput of water to just 16 cubic meters by April 26, 2014, when the Ukrainian side blocked the water flow to avenge for Crimea’s reunification with Russia.

So it was 16 mc before the block or after because if it's the first case the numbers sure don't match up.

2016......2016
It's two years from now on.
I'm more concerned about bitcoin survival than her making it through.

Rand Paul is pro-Bitcoin. Can you imagine the kind of boost which the digital currency might receive if he becomes the POTUS? I will assure you that it will be even beyond the wildest of your dreams.  Grin

It's not about that. In two years many things can change both in politics and cryptos.
Just like in politics , a new candidate might emerge or the old one might have some serious health problems making him withdraw.
