2121  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Does runnin a node in pruning mode count as a node? on: September 14, 2015, 04:41:25 PM
Quote
For now, block pruning disables block relay. In the future, nodes with block pruning will at a minimum relay “new” blocks, meaning blocks that extend their active chain.

So it's good to know that in the future pruning nodes can still help to strengthen the network by distributing new blocks, and very interesting that for the moment, I guess running pruning mode is just leeching.

This is not correct.
Bitcoin is not like Bittorrent where the only scarce resource is bandwidth. The bitcoin p2p network actually has a lot of upload capacity right now.

A pruned node is indeed a full node. It verifies all the rules of bitcoin. Here is a link for why that is so important

https://www.reddit.com/r/BitcoinBeginners/comments/3eq3y7/full_node_question/ctk4lnd

Plus theres the other benefits of a full node, even if its pruned. You have better privacy for example, because you've downloaded the entire blockchain nobody knows which addresses are yours.

edit: fixed formatting

Taking that reddit comment, it says that we should run our own full node for incoming transactions and that SPV nodes and web wallets can be led to believe they've "received 10000000 BTC!", which I know, and is true. For people who run Bitcoin Core as a main wallet, or even Armory and Electrum, this is not an issue, as Armory runs on top of Core and one can build an Electrum server, but what about SPV phone wallets, such as breadwallet? How do we make it connect to a specific node? These wallets connect randomly to the network, and they probably won't be a subject to an attack, so this is all academic discussion... how do you ensure your full security while running an SPV wallet?

Would convincing the devs to put an option to connect to a specific node increase the overall security of the network?

Also, didn't understand your privacy example.
2122  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 2 minute Google Forms survey: your opinions on Core vs XT on: September 14, 2015, 04:28:41 PM
Its a shitty political survey, what are you hoping to find out from asking these questions?

I was about to question the same thing, is the data going to be useful for something or it's just curiosity? Normally folks here sharing surveys are academics or something like that and will use the data for works/articles/publishing...
2123  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Earn Bitcoins with MMO Action Style Games? Yap! Its Possible Now on: September 13, 2015, 07:12:05 PM
is chopcoin the game OP is talking about?  Embarrassed

Not sure, but this thread has basically been hijacked Grin

But it's probably chopcoin, I don't think there's another agar copy using Bitcoin...
2124  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DELTA meets Cryptocurrencies on: September 13, 2015, 07:10:32 PM
The doge meme didn't start with dogecoin, the meme has nothing to do with cryptocurrency.

Funny video, though.

Yes, was exactly thinking of replying that. Thought there would be a bigger cryptocurrency reference there... Smiley
2125  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Earn Bitcoins with MMO Action Style Games? Yap! Its Possible Now on: September 13, 2015, 07:07:54 PM
Chopcoin is really nice Smiley I don't play agar anymore, as they don't have a faucet!

The Faucet playground is great, if you win you can make 5 times more than regular faucets!

If you want some tips to get started, I just finishing writing a guide for this cool game.

Nice guide Smiley
2126  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: You can run but we are right behind you! on: September 13, 2015, 05:48:34 PM
Haha, nicely done Smiley A bit of humor is sometimes needed around here too... Smiley
2127  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: When will action be taken on the block size limit? on: September 13, 2015, 03:09:28 PM
Action is already being taken and each BIP related to this discussion has a rule for triggering the fork
2128  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BitTorrent Creator Weighs in on Bitcoin-XT on: September 13, 2015, 11:56:32 AM
I'm also on the opinion that his statements don't count more than the statement of any one of us here. He did not invent a decentralized system, he just opened the doors for people to decentralize Bittorrent.

He might not even be a Bitcoin user... So he's just throwing more wood in the fire.
2129  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Petition to pass the Bitcoin Alert Keys to Andreas M. Antonopoulos (w/POLL) on: September 12, 2015, 11:40:50 PM
I suppose that they are secretly distributed, but I wouldn't know. I would assume that the devs discuss it privately before giving the key to another person.

This was basically the main goal of my question, trying to know if they're secretly distributed... Thanks for your reply Smiley

Destroy all the alert keys forever would be the best solution.

Any specific reason why?
2130  Economy / Goods / Re: BitStickers - Bitcoin Stickers on: September 12, 2015, 11:14:21 PM
Found your website recently... Your stickers seem really nice and you have nice feedback, so I'm thinking in ordering some. Are you still shipping? Your site seems a bit unmaintained... Can't seem to be able to create an account and Chrome says "This page is trying to load scripts from unauthenticated sources".
2131  Other / New forum software / Re: You have been mentioned in this "post" on: September 12, 2015, 10:23:14 PM
Along with mentions, there should be a general notification system that includes something along the lines of "user X quoted your post". This last one would be more useful for me, personally... And having a general notifications panel would allow many types of notifications/interactions like these.

I realize that this might not be implemented at all, and if it's going to be implemented, it will be on the new forum only Smiley So we're going to have to wait a long time to have these things natively on the forum.

Also, tapatalk compatibility would be amazing... No need for a separate app, it probably requires more work and it's much more handy to have tapatalk support
2132  Economy / Services / Re: Topic notifier service on: September 12, 2015, 10:19:48 PM
*the patrol page will only list posts either made or quoted by newbies. In order for this to work when users who are not newbies post your username, the script will need to check every new post
Ohhhhhh, maybe I have to go to unread replies, then check the latest post from each. Or is there something like patrol but for everyone?

Just use the Recent Posts page. Didn't even knew "patrol" page existed Cheesy Seems a bit redundant when Recent page exists.
2133  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Petition to pass the Bitcoin Alert Keys to Andreas M. Antonopoulos (w/POLL) on: September 12, 2015, 10:08:41 PM
Why not? He's been a true Bitcoin advocate and generally a trustworthy member of the community. Also, Satoshi is not here, and only two people currently hold the keys, apparently, so no harm in having more one or two people with the key.

Now the question is: would he accept such a responsibility?
More than just two people hold the keys. I believe that gmaxwell does also and probably all of the Core devs. But you won't find a list of all of the people who hold the keys. That is for their personal safety.

So the people known to hold the key have revealed themselves, at their responsibility, that they do so? The keys were secretly distributed?
2134  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Who has been affected by stress test already? on: September 12, 2015, 09:53:04 PM
Good luck on getting CryptoGraffiti up again, it's a pretty interesting service.

The good news is that I have several fallback mechanisms in place so real-time block chain decoding has never stopped. I just lost one decoder instance which means I'm one step closer to going offline. I cannot restart the instance that went down because I have not set up a remote administration tool for the PC that runs it. It's very far from me for a couple of weeks so can't just go there and start the process.

Nice to see that you have backup systems. I was referring to the fact that cryptograffiti doesn't seem to be displaying data when I made that post, and it still doesn't seem to display it. But I guess you're also dependent of other services such as blockchain, and if they're not working, then yours won't work too Smiley

As for blockchain spamming, it's not the purpose of this thread, but... The fact that there's a write button on the site doesn't mean it's owner and/or operators are directly responsible for bloating the blockchain...

2136  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ban Bitcoin XT connections to my node? on: September 12, 2015, 09:44:09 PM
Let's all ban XT connections... Then all XT users ban all Core connections, and XT and Core only connect to peers similar to them...

People are building on solutions to improve Bitcoin, trying to develop the best of both worlds and people keep on separating everything. Looks like that even people invested in Bitcoin want to ruin it deliberately which is wierd. Especially when both clients transmit pretty much the same thing and it's not possible to deploy any fork whatsoever...

This isn't war, it's trying to reach a consensus, banning each other stops consensus
2137  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: DealExtreme Accepting Bitcoins on: September 12, 2015, 08:26:36 PM
Biggest gadjet and tech chains still haven't hopped on the Bitcoin bandwagon. Dealextreme, Gearbest, Banggood... etc. It's not only a question for DX...

Why? They're probably too busy with their current profit Cheesy

Speaking more seriously, they have a load of work updating their current sites as it is, and they probably don't want to "waste" time and money adopting Bitcoin... For now. They haven't realized how Bitcoin can improve their profits Wink
2138  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Who has been affected by stress test already? on: September 12, 2015, 07:16:10 PM
i still have a unconfirmed transaction in the blockchain sent with a 10bits fee.  Cry

Normal, very low fee for the amount of transactions we've had recently, unfortunately...
2139  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: CoolWallet started taking orders now! on: September 12, 2015, 07:12:10 PM
The wallet is actually pretty good looking, would like to see it in action and even try one myself.
2140  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Vanitygen & Multi-signature adresses ? on: September 12, 2015, 02:28:40 PM
I've asked this question quite a long time ago on the Vanitygen thread and back then it wasn't possible to have vanity Multisig addresses. I think it's still not possible, and I don't know if it will be possible one day.
