It is nice.  There is precedent though, as stability like this happened once before in July, with a similar percentage range:

What happens next depends on the next big player: is it someone dumping another 20k coins, or buying up 20k coins?
I could see price dropping to $2.5 again, or jumping to $4.

Dumping 20k? Still stable at 3.10.
In fact dumping 40k would take us to 3.00.
60k would take us to 2.95.  Still within sight of $3.

On the other hand, buying 20k would take us to 3.35.  Buying 40k... 3.75. Smiley

The problem is not that people or corporations (which are just groups of people) can donate unlimited amounts to politicians.

The problem is that politicians can hand out favors, and that ability grows in direct proportion with the size and scope of government.

Shrink the government, and the number of favors to be dolled out is necessarily reduced. In the "money buying power" problem, it is not the money, but the power.

Now the problem is shrinking the government.  How do we overcome entrenched special interests who obviously don't want to shrink the government?  The current revolving-door system is largely static and I see no real change on the horizon, unfortunately.

You're reading too much into this.  Look at the volumes:

People are leaving for the holidays... anyone see those straight lines on mtgoxlive?
When all the traders and speculators come back, we'll see real price movement again.
2524  Other / Off-topic / Re: RIP Atlas on: December 18, 2011, 04:28:55 AM
Oh, shit! Atlas is gone!? This will go down in Bitcoin history!

Bitcoin history?  Really?  He's just a kid with mental issues.  Or you're being sarcastic, hard to tell.
Somehow I think he's here and in cahoots with these SA trolls.

He definitely is, he seems to have a pathological need for attention.  As long as he isn't posting crazy atlas stuff he might be able to evade a ban, but that would mean not being himself/not posting about anything he really cares about, so he'll get bored eventually and either leave or revert to the crazy stuff and get banned again.  So either way it's still a win.

Even if he doesn't post crazy atlas stuff, you know it's Atlas when you see the following:
": )" -- Atlas smiley
"Heh, " -- Atlas sentence prefix
"unremorsefully" -- Atlas' favorite word

a while back we mentioned that getting principle back is far more important than getting the interest payments... so i should mention that last week i successfully withdrew a large chunk of it (600 btc). cheers.

awesome!  My trust for pirate just went up by 100%.

principle -> principal

dammit i swapped the spelling and swapped and swapped again and finally guessed wrong, and now you've quoted me Smiley should have just looked it up in the first place.

haha... common mistake, don't worry Smiley

Really would have been nice to have some shots of the really early markets.

$1000 would have blown the asks away and the spreads were usually 10%+.

I'd like to see how thin the market was last time we were at this price.

There are a few old depth charts in S3052's technical analysis thread... and yeah, they sure were small back then.

Good idea but the depths don't mean much IMHO. We've all seen walls vanish into thin air when it's being approached.

I'm not making this for some sort of analysis afterwards, it's not even in numerical format.  I just think it's a cool collection of pictures to have of Bitcoin markets in their infancy Smiley
2533  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: $90,000 in credit card fees on: December 17, 2011, 04:29:40 PM
The politicans of power are not sponsored by ordinary people and credit cards. They are directed by shadowy organizations, you might call them zionists, illuminati, freemasons. The Obama is only a puppet in theyr hands.

fun fact: this guy is a nazi (and I'm entirely serious!)
who knew that Bitcoin would attract such people Tongue

I only started 2 days ago, so no interest yet.

But all the fields, Payments, Deposits and Withdrawals are empty, and I suppose that at least my initial deposit should be showing up on the Deposits, yet it's not, only shows up at the top of the page, right beside my username.

Same on my side. Good to see progress here. I hope Pirate keeps up the good work and our coins safe Wink

+1!
Also, pirate, just got my interest. Thanks!
2535  Other / Politics & Society / Re: "Religion is always in the control business..." on: December 17, 2011, 04:04:53 PM
Why is pork prohibited though?

Because of this verse

"Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah , and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful." 5:3 AL Ma'ida

a video I googled http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nZAhexhxbs for more info

hope that explains

But isn't that in the Quran (you said Christians shouldn't eat pork either)?  Also, that looks like it prohibits all meat: "prohibited to you are dead animals."
2536  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Cash deposit at US bank? on: December 17, 2011, 03:58:20 PM
ExchB is sadly gone.  MtGox has suspended their cash deposits.  What exchange will let me get USD in by making a cash deposit at a US bank?

YES!

Early next week BitInstant will be launching Instant Cash Deposits into TradeHill and MtGox (CryptoXchange and VirWox within the next few days)

Deposit CASH at Chase, CitiBank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, ING and more banks and credit unions to fund your exchange accounts!

This works very simply, you go to Bitinstant.com, initiate a transfer and a deposit slip will be generated. Unlike other exchanges that offer cash deposits, our service connects with all the banks for INSTANT verification and money transfers! As soon as your deposit is made, our systems will be polled to initiate a transfer to your exchange account!

Our fee will likely be in the 3%-4% range of your total deposit- as always the higher the deposit, the cheaper it is.

I literally was amazed today when I tested it. From the time I deposited it with the teller, 37 minutes later the funds were in my TradeHill account.

Cheers

If you already have a bank account with one of those banks, will it be possible to make an online deposit to your account?

Look guys, proudhon is buying bitcoins.  The sky just fell down.

Where are today's interest payments?  Or did the 1-day delay on the 14th/15th affect future payments too?
2538  Economy / Speculation / The Historical Depth Blog -- updates once a day on: December 17, 2011, 03:40:54 PM
So that in a few months we can look back and see what happened on mtgoxlive over time.

After I log in all I see at the top of the page is the ammount i sent to the address, 250BTC, which is correct, altho it doesn't appear in the deposits area, is that right?

Also, please, a change password page. You sent the password on an unsecure channel and I would like to change it.

I saw my amount + my interest... is your interest not showing?

I only started 2 days ago, so no interest yet.

oh... pirate said that info isn't there because it takes too much effort for him to migrate it Tongue
Your future deposits, withdrawals and payments should show up.
2540  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is this the manipulator buying btc? on: December 17, 2011, 02:26:37 PM
wow... see, people, there is definitely a single Manipulator (or a group of people under one leader, acting together)

wow... see, people, there is definitely a group of Manipulated (or a larger group of people under one leader, responding together)

...
Do you deny that there is a person with deep pockets playing the market?
Do you deny that his moves cause volatility?
Do you deny that the volatility his moves cause is not limited to only his initial sell/buy?
Do you deny that, potentially, this could make money for the Manipulator?

No. Nor do I care. If people are that easily "motivated" then I applaud anyone able to take advantage of it. Plus it supplies hours of entertaining reading material.

...And this is why we talk about the manipulator Smiley
