Well I 'fondled' my Titan fpga chip as you asked in the above post. (I feel dirty)

It is cool to the touch...no real heat at all on this chip. This is true of BOTH my Titans.

So I guess 'neutral heat" is what I'd say neither hot nor cold and barely warm at that

In the meantime I now know what blows up Neptunes and probably titans (Note: NEVER move a hot or running unit, let them cool first) and can fix blown Neptune boards that don't talk back to the controller. It's a bit of a bitch to do, but for a blown Titan it's probably well worth it.

Now back to working on the water cooled Neptune. Having conformal coating on my water blocks (used to mount them on backs of boards) is cutting the efficiency. Likewise the chips run hotter than the temp sensors say, watch out....

Yes, that is it. It's actually a pretty busy little bee all things considered.

They are very similar boards, so what works on one should work on the other. Just sanded down and re-mounted the water cooler block, it's holding a nice 44c, which is actually 56c as read from the bottom of the board. Top temp on the bottom of the board is 68c under some of the DC-DC supplies, they do dump a lot of heat into the board planes.....

Lightfoot, any thoughts on applying a conformal coating to the titan PCB?

I run mine in unconditioned space and I am near salt water, do you think it is a good idea to apply in this situation?

risk vs reward, some loss of heat transfer vs protecting circuit from the environment -- I won't be applying it to any heatsinks, just the pcb -- I know from soldering this board that it is pretty tough, maybe conformal isn't necessary, ie a lot of work for minimal reward -- what do you think?

Hrm. Conformal coating does keep out the crud but does keep in the heat; I can see a 20c difference between having a thin layer of conformal coating on the water block to Neptune chip interface, sanding it off really dropped the temps.

Honestly though I don't think environment is that massive a deal with these kinds of units. Unless you're really running it in a dirt farm, or got the thing submerged in crummy water it shouldn't be that terrible. I had some thoughts on pictures of another company's miner that was refused RMA due to "environment damage" and thought "that's not unusual". Besides if it's a really corrosive atmosphere the fan will probably seize first, which will overtemp the device.*

A properly conformal coated board though can take a lot of environmental damage: I once fixed an electric car controller that had a leak from the water plate inside the controller box. Literally covered everything with oily, antifreeze laden gunk. Cleaned the boards, cleared out the fault maker (the pre-charge relay) and the board fired right up with no problems.

However in that case you have 400 volt DC lines on the board, and that kind of voltage will bridge gaps caused by gunk. 12 volts? Not so much.... .6 volts? Really not so much.

What do I use for home electronic repairs? TechSpral Fine-L-Kote SR silicon conformal coating spray. Light coat is all you really need.

the hottest it got here last year was 105f and tarkins mod throttled it down for a few hours

The fan guards are  rusting, which is what got me looking for a solution and I found the conformal coatings. To be honest the boards look fine, just dirty. I guess I'll take them apart, clean em with alcohol, blow them out, and take it from there

I already bought the stuff, maybe I'll do one cube -- see if any adverse effects.

I talk with Gentarkin on a daily basis , many times multiple times a day. He has made no mention of this website. So Im near 100% positive this is not his. He is away for the holidays , and I have no way to reach him. A red flag is our additional licenses are $30 NOT $25. Im not sure what we can do, but I have some ideas. Also the fact that someone paid and got nothing. That right there tells me its not Gentarkin. I can tell you with 100% certainty he would NEVER do that. Youll never meet a more honest person.

Just wondering why does the v.99e restarts the Titan or BFGMiner every 4-5 hours. I have set the max temp at 90 and all of my dies are staying below 70 now that its cooler here. None of the dies are bad, Current (A) is between 37-40 @ 300 MHz.

The intial and primary goal of my firmware since its inception and to this day has been to bring "sleeping, dropped or w/e u wanna call them" dies back to a hashing state. In order to do this my firmware issues cube power up / downs to bring back the affected die(s). In order to carry out a full power cycle on a cube bfgminer has to be stopped prior to the power up / down then started again after the power cycling.

As to why the pi may be rebooting on your. The pi reboots whenever it detects communication via the i2c bus to the controller board stops working(most likely due to the controller board locking up). Rebooting the pi instructs the controller board to power cycle & reflash the binary code to the FPGA which reinitializes the FPGA on controller board.

The controller board hanging like this, Ive witnessed over time are completely random. It can happen more often when voltages & clocks are being changed. (in some cases it will happen much more often during tuning of dies when my "energy saver" edition gets released)

Its most likely caused by shitty code running on the FPGA, which unfortunately is completely closed source.
