The last thing you want your smartphone doing is sending your text messages, contacts, and location history to a server in China. But according to mobile security firm Kryptowire, a particularly nasty brand of Android software did just that, transmitting text, data, call, location, and app data to a Chinese server every 72 hours.

Researchers began to raise red flags last fall, when it was discovered the the data mining tool in question — called Adups — had been living inside hundreds of millions of devices produced by more than 40 manufacturers

There are other viruses pre-installed in some android phones besides the one in that story.

So what?

Give me an example where that is relevant to cryptocurrencies.
An actual example where something happened to that persons cryptos because of those viruses, not any made
up theorthical "this or that might happen if the moon is partially clouded while you accidentally walk backwards while seeing a stray cat hunting,"

You, sir, deserve what is coming to you.  Please stop making light of security, there are noobs that read this thread, you could do real harm to others, not just yourself.

A n00b buying a phone, not installing anything but the apps necessary to claim the forks (after of course first moving his bitcoins to a new wallet), using only free wifi to do so, and then immediately moving his coins to a new wallet or an exchange will be perfectly fine.

I never understood the need for a HW wallet anyway. Is it that hard to write down your private keys? Or memorize your 12/24 word seed?

it is a convenient offline signer, nothing more, you can achieve the same thing with a dedicated offline PC.

Thanks, but I have kind of an issue with companies telling me what forks I can and can not have.
With a phone I choose what to claim and not.

You go with that lack of replay protection, booooyyyiii !!

As far as I know, all the forks have replay protection. I would never touch a fork without replay protection.

So this range-bound wash trading is very interesting. It seems that for whatever reason, the futures market is intent on controlling the price within a narrow bound.

Good thing, or bad?

In my mind..whales are still accumulating...so its good imho. I dont know if I would go so far as to say we are coiling again...but there seems to be some compression in the ask walls. I am calling for a nice little spike within 36 hours.

If you just want to hodl for years a paper wallet is OK.

But if you want to move your Bitcoins sometimes this is a real pain in the a**

HW also prevent against trojans where your address generator (from seed) creates an public address and the trojan changes that. The public address shown on your HW will never be false.

Take with a grain of salt.

I'm sure as an investment their rating system will give Bitcoin a C- or D, everything else will get an F.

And the market analysts will say, "See? Told ya so." and pat themselves on the back.

I think I called it. They gave it a C+.  Tongue  Roll Eyes

Yeah slightly better than Dogecoin at C... these people really know their job Tongue

My call: I don't think the price will move significantly until after close of business Friday. And then it'll bounce around on the weekend, only to come back to same price level on Monday.

Same as last weekend.

Some people just want to create the illusion that they're physically holding their money, on a device that is specifically dedicated for it. You could very well write down your private keys but of course some people are extremely good at losing stuff (especially at a single piece of paper)

It occurs to me that I almost maybe have a slight contribution to the discussion. Not a phone, but this guy builds security-hardened Linux laptops from the BIOS level up. Don't trust me or him, of course, but you can easily investigate him. He has an educational charity.

that might be true, but it's still no good for serious bitcoin. there are dozens of such security theatre laptops (edit: and mobiles lol), all worthless.

If there's a way to install a custom ROM on this rugged phone I would use it to store some crypto.
