that sounds too good to be true

I really, really like the concept of DevCoin and I want to give back a little and help spread the word.

Here are some things I am thinking of doing , and I wanted to hear thoughts / suggestions / if it's already being worked on / if anyone wants to help / if I should leave it to you guys:

- An online forum devoted to DevCoin on a separate domain.
- Another website as well as the wiki which explains DevCoin? It is a bit thin on search results when DevCoin is googled.
- Perhaps offer a bounty for a windows DevCoin client in BTC to get it done fast? I personally think this is essential.
- Maybe set up an online exchange just for DevCoin?
- Petition BTC-e to add DevCoin
- Start working on getting merchants who accept BTC and LTC to accept DevCoin (we accept it at http://bitcoinprbuzz.com)

I think all of this would really help in getting DevCoin more exposure and help the whole project immensely.

From devcoin bounty:
http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=devcoin_bounty#capitalization_100_000_usd

"Capitalization 100,000 USD
Software

    Simple Extension
..

Capitalization 1,000,000 USD
Software

    Modify Big Application
    Small Application
"

What that means is that if the capitalization (currently about 1.5 million) goes over 100,000$, then we can make bounties for simple extensions, if it goes over 1 million, we can make bounties for small applications and modifications of big applications. From:
http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=devcoin_bounty#project_types

"..the largest bounty that can be funded is about 1% of the market capitalization of devcoin."

In other words, because the market capitalization is now above 1 million, we can now fund simple extensions, small applications, and modifications of big applications. The maximum funding for any of those projects would be 1% of 1.5 million = 15,000$.

Perhaps a stupid question, but is there a hard limit on Devcoin like in Bitcoin (21 mln) and Litecoin (84 mln)?

Welcome to Operaficionado:
http://devtome.com/doku.php?id=wiki:user:operaficionado

who has written more than a thousand words on devtome:
http://devtome.com/doku.php?id=the_eastern_westerner

and so got the third, three generation share signing bonus for writing:
http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=earn_devcoins_by_writing#signing_bonus

There are now seven, three share bonuses remaining. He will also get earnings for writing:
http://www.devtome.com/doku.php?id=earn_devcoins_by_writing#earnings_per_word

To boost devcoin purchases, I suggest an updated devcoin pool bounty. The devcoins can be sent to the miners, or it can be a charity pool which sends devcoins divided equally to the developers on the bitcoin share list:
https://raw.github.com/Unthinkingbit/charity/master/bitcoinshare.html

It could be a new pool, or a collaboration with an existing pool. If sent to developers, the developers must get at least 0.5% of the gross in devcoins. If sent to miners, the miners must get at least 0.5% more devcoins than they would from merge mining, for example if merge mining gets 0.6% of the value as devcoins, a pool would have to send 1.1% of the gross to the miners, forcing it to convert at least 0.5% of the gross to devcoins. The devcoins can be from merged mining and/or from earnings converted to devcoin. The pool operator must explain where the devcoins come from, and if they are bought on an exchange how the exchange rate is calculated.

Paying devcoins worth a total of at least 1 BTC, at the vircurex exchange rate, gets half the bounty rounded up. If the pool is still paying out devcoins a month later, it will get the remainder of the bounty.

Because there are going to be more than a hundred generation shares paid out this round, we can afford to increase the bounty to 16 generation shares for the first pool, shared equally among the developers, 14 for the second, then 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, and finally 2.

This would supersede the old devcoin pool bounty at:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=34586.msg1125683#msg1125683

Are there any objections, or should anything be changed?

No, but you can calculate how many devcoins will be there is 100 years, for example.

Here are some things I am thinking of doing , and I wanted to hear thoughts / suggestions / if it's already being worked on / if anyone wants to help / if I should leave it to you guys:

- An online forum devoted to DevCoin on a separate domain.

Right now there aren't enough devcoin posts to support another forum, and we get a lot of visibility by being in the alt chains forum. If we ever get huge interest, then we could split off.

Quote
- Another website as well as the wiki which explains DevCoin? It is a bit thin on search results when DevCoin is googled.

I want to keep the devcoin official site on devtome, because it boosts the devtome page rank. We should get more search results as devtome becomes more popular. Devtome popularity roughly quadrupled in the last month, we're now all the way up to 0.00000109% of the web:)
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/devtome.com#pageviews

As devtome gets more articles, and we get more marketers that should increase a lot. In a few months a devcoin search should be full of devtome links.

Quote
- Perhaps offer a bounty for a windows DevCoin client in BTC to get it done fast? I personally think this is essential.

I suggest doubling the current Windows bounty, this would boost the remaining bounty from 3 shares to 6 shares. Like all bounty boosts, this would be retroactive and a top up bounty would be sent to previous recipients. I am not willing to offer a BTC bounty, even though it would bring more interest.

Quote
- Maybe set up an online exchange just for DevCoin?
- Petition BTC-e to add DevCoin

There is a 2 (for a basic site) to 6 (for a very secure site) share bounty for another exchange. If there are more than 110 generations shares in round 22 we could double that bounty also.

Quote
- Start working on getting merchants who accept BTC and LTC to accept DevCoin (we accept it at http://bitcoinprbuzz.com)

Hopefully an increase in devcoin value, even if only because of an increase in bitcoin value, will encourage more merchants to accept it.

At the time of this writing, devcoin is at block 84,698:
https://vps.vircurex.com/

about 2 days away from the earnings calculation, at block 85,000. To all prospective writers, if you haven't already please write an article and a user page before April 10 in order to get included in round 22.

The round 22 payout will start three weeks after, around May 1.

Do you have some statistics, by the way?

I've been experimenting with Anonymous Ads, so I made a banner for devcoin:

https://a-ads.com/campaigns/207

So far it got ~20 clicks which cost me 0.004 BTC.

Perhaps it is more cost-effective to use paid ads than to pay shares for banners. Just saying...

Thanks for the info. Please post or message me a devcoin address that can accept generation coins, and I'll award you the 1/5 share small informative post bounty:

At the current price of 190$/BTC, that's 0.76$ for 20 clicks, about 0.04$/click, which is cheaper than I guessed. It's probably cheaper than our current marketing program, but we'll continue to pay shares for banners because:

1) The money goes to developers.
2) It encourages people to do something each month.
3) Of the devcoins sent out, part will be held, which reduces the loss of value.
4) It takes less effort to send shares than money, because shares are automatically sent out.

For maintaining his Windows bundle and helping people install it, K1773R is promoted to general administrator. He'll now get 1 share as long as he keeps working, up from the 2/5 of a share he received for being a file administrator.

BTC, LTC, NMC, PPC, TRC, IXC and FRC are working succesfully. The problems are with DVC only! ("connections" : 0)! And why?

And why devcoind doesn`t accept -datadir and -conf? More precisely, -datadir understands it, but searches the configuration file name in the default path (with default name but not stated by me).

I like the idea of Devcoin very much and have bought some of them in Vircurex.

But I didn't understand well (my English is not so good) how the "bounties" (donations to projects) are distributed and who decides which projects will be supported?

I have read something of a Swiss cooperative (devda.ch?) involved, but don't understand exactly what is her function. Also there seems to be a conection to Vircurex and Cryptostocks, or not?

Many thanks if someone of the "insiders" can answer me the questions or give me links to pages where it is explained thoroughly. I see a great potential in this coin. I had recently a very similar idea and am happy there is something like this "in action", but am a bit confused about the underlying mechanism.

Another question: Is it possible to write in other languages (in my case, Spanish and German) for devtome?

Also, I second the proposal for a Devcoin forum or subforum. I have read some of the posts of this thread, but it is very long now Wink
