Hello.
Have you tried to use some other miner like poclbm to see if it's miner of connection problem ?
Do you use some kind of proxy/firewall that can break LP connections ?

I used poclbm with GUIMiner frontend before and it yielded about 2% stale/invalid shares recently (but there're no logs to find out what time these rejected shares were at). I switched to phoenix due to a higher hashing rate of 228 vs 216.
I have standard Win7 firewall and also there's a firewall on my 3COM router, but I don't think they would break LP connections. Anyway, I'm going to turn both off and see if anything changes with the stale shares ratio.

I wonder whether long polling doesn't work for me. I've got a rather high stale ratio (about 4-5%) and there're always a few rejected shares reported by phoenix just about the time there's a new block solved on DeepBit.

I've noticed the same, and I'm using phoenix too. It only happens after mining for some time. Looks like phoenix loses the LP connection after a few hours. After restarting, phoenix will show "[24/05/2011 15:09:01] LP: New work pushed" correctly.

Still, the phatk kernel provides a much better hash rate for me, so I just restart phoenix when I notice that there has been no LP for a long time.

The miner's task is to find a special combination of numbers, hash of which will be lower than specified value.
This happens rarely, so miners are submitting not only the winning one but others that are low, but not low enough, so pool can see that you are really trying and not just waiting. Each one of those results is a proof-of-work and we call it a share.
One of those will be low enough to create a new block.

-v 2 made 219, -v 3 made 208, while phatk makes 228 Mh/s on my HD6850. What am I doing wrong?

Sometimes I see many "long poll: new block" messages within a few minutes of each other.  In the past 30 minutes, there have been 10.  But other times, I won't see a new "long poll: new block" message for 2 or 3 hours. 

Does this mean that Deepbit is sometimes creating blocks faster than 6 minutes, and other times taking 3 hours to create a block?  Does it mean that the entire Bitcoin network is taking 3 hours to find that block?  I thought a new block should be found every 6 minutes, so the 3 hour delay seems surprising.

Ultimately, this affects "Proportional" payout.  If a block is found in 2 minutes and I have submitted 1 share, that share is worth more than the many shares I submit during a 3 hour block creation.  Thanks for any information you can provide.

"long poll: new block" is shown when block is found by anyone in the bitcoin network, not only by this pool.
And 6 blocks per hour is not a strict value, it can be less or more.[/quote]

Yes, it is. But many times you will miss that short block completely, so this "lucky share" will be averaged out to normal value.

The variation in block creation speed is surprising.  Today, it has either taken 1 hour or ~4 minutes to find a block.  Not many blocks take 10 to 40 minutes to find.  Seems odd.

6 blocks per hour is the target speed for the entire network.

And the variation is expected, it's almost a random process.

Well, if you want to know how all the network is constructed, you'd better read bitcoin wiki at http://bitcoin.it
Sorry, it's just already there - about what a block is, what is a difficulty and so on.

With your speed of 1470 kH/s, you'll need 48 minutes and 41 seconds on average to generate one share.
And on average you'll need 244139 shares (=current difficulty) to find one really winning, if you were mining solo.

You need to earn at least 0.01 BTC, then you can set up autopayment or press "Instant payment" button on the payments page of the site.

Using guiminer, it'll stay at around 276 mhash/sec and deepbit.net will report right around that same number.

What am I doing wrong?

On an unrelated note, does anyone have a good recipe for gumbo or something similar? I'm thinking of making use of this heat production with some slow-cooking.

1. Many users have reported that their hashrate reported by phoenix miner is higher than in reality.
2. Try setting your speed averaging window at deepbit site to 30 or more minutes to check if this hashrate is correct or not.

New to Bitcoin as of today.  Initially went with another mining pool for an hour or so but decided to switch to Deepbit to try it out instead.

My account still says unconfirmed email, and have not received an email in the spam folder or otherwise.  How long should I wait to get that before I seek help for it?  Did a search on this forum and didn't come up with anything.

Using Phoenix miner, and it was easy to set up thanks to the people here and the Deepbit site.  Looking forward to gaining from this neat application.  I believe that I will mostly use it to pay for an online game I play (Rift) and for perhaps website hosting or any of the list of things that I've found through the BitCoin site.

Can't believe that a hardcore geek such as myself didn't hear about this until today!  Found it through surfing around on old posts at Lifehacker.

Also, using D:\Programs\BitCoin Miner\phoenix.exe -u http://*@*.*:*@deepbit.net:8332/ -k poclbm DEVICE=0 AGGRESSION=3 as my command line.  I have an Nvidia 550gtx Ti graphics card, so what aggression setting would you use if you were me?  Seems like my speed isn't as fast as some people have here, but I realize that it's only a $200 card and people here probably have ones that are much more expensive.

Currently e-mail confirmation is needed only to change your bitcoin address for the second time or recover your password.
E-mail is not sent just because of registration yet :)

The problem is that you are using Nvidia's card instead of ATI. Nvidia cards don't have hardware support for bitwise shifts and thus are inferior for hashing.

Ah, I see.  I just got this Nvidia card because I heard that Rift ran better on these.  I went from an Ati Radeon 4650 to an Nvidia 550 gtx ti.  How much of a gain do you think that I would get from using a Radeon card?  Right now it seems like I am getting an average of 35.50 MH/s with you.  I think that it's still within the 30 days and I could return it for something else.

Edit: Crap, I think someone has thrown away the box to the card I just bought.  I do have another system that I'm not running now, so I could use my old card or buy another one in that system.  I could find some way to use the internet on both of my computers (I'll have to probably figure that out myself) and set them up separately.  Could probably just hook one of my monitors up to it long enough to get it going then unplug it and put it back on this one, since I have two monitors.

Just wanted to point out that I'm using phoenix 1.48 miner w/ pocblm kernel on 6 cards and have no problem with stale shares.   Seem like its on your end.  (Not DB)
