Hey guys,
i am using the GUI wallet from the OP. Is it enough to just copy all the files that are being created when starting up in order to backup my wallet?
EDIT: I tried to send a couple of AEON Coins to my wallet, but unfortunately they still haven't shown up. Any ideas what the problem might be?
the archive aeongui-0.2.3.zip contains 0.9.1.0 version of aeond.exe and simplewallet.exe overwrite them with latest release (0.9.6.0) https://github.com/aeonix/aeon/releasesat first, the daemon must be synchronized : look at "about" tab the current block (~731900 today). it can be long (several hours if from scratch) then your wallet must refresh (several minutes) look at the log in "logs" tab then "show wallet logs" and uncheck "hide handled lines" box. you will see how refresh is processing ("Height") to backup your wallet, copy the file with extension .bin.keys (it's the most important file) and the .bin file (optionnally, it's a cache with your transactions history but it can be recreated with the .bin.keys) i was able to receive and send aeon through the gui the unconfirmed balance seems not updated correctly after a reception else all was ok (edit: transaction history tab doesn't show outgoing transactions) Thank you buddy, that was a great explanation!

However, what about the GitHub side of the house? Could GitHub be shutdown? How will we update our software in that case? Wouldn't it be better to run updates through the software itself? Or had some other highly secure and decentralized way of doing it?
Git is already decentralized. Every developer or even user (building their own) who has ever done 'git clone' has a complete copy of the entire repo which can be reposted on another git host for sharing.

When will AEON be added to polo?
Poloniex purging 24 shitcoins 5th Sept. It's a chance for AEON, CryptoNote is hot. Can Aeon be considered as "silver" to Monero's "gold"? Seeing that they both are from Cryptnote can you please point out what the subtle differences are between XMR and Aeon? Also what was the purpose of smooth's creation of Aeon? Were there limitations in Monero that he wanted to fix by creating Aeon?

Where do you see Aeon positioned a year from now? What special features/circumstances warrant the current value?

i vaguely remember a proper gui is next but damn, looks he's too busy w/ steem these days... The GUI will come with the Monero rebase. That makes more sense than trying to resurrect the mostly-unmaintained Cryptonote GUI code, which was the original plan. In a year I expect that we will be well into running the new rebased version with the Monero development progress from the past two years (LMDB, GUI, etc.) along with our own enhancements (lightweight crypto, offchain secure private messages, etc.). Hopefully the AEON community will have grown and begun to offer some signature services that are unique to AEON. If the valuation continues to hold and improve, then the development/donations stash (which has not been touched since the miner development, except to add to it from our seed nodes mining; see below) will be able to significantly contribute to funding development. The first thing I would want to fund is a high quality mobile wallet, as I have already sketched out how to do proper trustless SPV-style wallets for cryptonote, but unfortunately no one has yet put resources into implementing it. Opened wallet: WmsSWgtT1JPg5e3cK41hKXSHVpKW7e47bjgiKmWZkYrhSS5LhRemNyqayaSBtAQ6517eo5PtH9wxHVmM78JDZSUu2W8PqRiNs balance: 461455.323546530907, unlocked balance: 461455.323546530907

Job well done guys! will have to find a new entry point. 1ex.trade V2 has gone live. being early days it will be easy to get listed. the require dev verification but then you get the benefits of bank integration, And the exchange itself is shit hot. I want to do a short piece about aeon on steemit but can't find much information about the coin. can somebody point me to a white paper or something maybe? what makes cryptonight lite different from the original algo? some interesting current and planned features, and info about them? I've noticed when I mine aeon I get a higher hashrate then I would get mining other CN coins. Why is that?

The cryptonight-lite variant uses half as much cache and half as many rounds per hash (only half as many rounds are needed to ensure good coverage of the entire scratchpad, since it is smaller). Thus you can get twice as many hash attempts per thread and, depending on cache availability, twice as many threads on your CPU (overall about 4x faster, or more if the CPU has less than 2 MB of total accessible cache). Example: i7-4770 has 8 MB of cache and 4 cores but supports hyper threading for 8 hardware threads. With 8 threads you are using a total of 8 MB of cache here, or 16 MB with regular cryptonight (which wont work since the CPU only has 8 MB). There are also quite a few low end or mobile CPUs with only 1 MB of cache or 2 MB but segmented so that only 1 MB can be used by any core. Those perform terribly with regular cryptonight, but are perfectly usable with cryptonight-lite. As for a white paper, there really isn't one, as this was originally a "keep the coin from dying" project when I took over and has evolved from there, rather than having a real "launch". There are various technical writeups scattered throughout this thread including the pruning FAQ and some comments about the safe allowance of lighter-weight 0-mix transactions, and now the above description of the function and motivation for cryptonight-light (a similar writeup might have appeared earlier, I don't remember). Perhaps at some point those should indeed be collected into a white paper.
