Here is some info on the differences:
http://monero.stackexchange.com/questions/1393/what-is-the-aeon-currency

Highlights:
4 minute block time
a lighter variant of the Cryptonight PoW
0 mixin transactions will be allowed

Thank you for the reply. What I really want to know is how is the lighter variant of the Cryptonight proof of work different from the regular and normal variant? Is it more energy efficient?

I also want to know how long will smooth stay with Aeon as lead developer?

Each block is stacked on top of the previous one. Adding another block to the top makes all lower blocks more difficult to remove: there is more "weight" above each block. A transaction in a block 6 blocks deep (6 confirmations) will be very difficult to remove.

I think the difference between cryptonight and cryptonight-lite is that the former uses a 2 MB scratchpad while the latter uses a 1 MB scratchpad, so this makes it easier to mine on slightly crappier CPUs (with smaller cache) and more theoretically possible on mobile devices, I think.

I'm not going anywhere

The previous reply about mining was correct but it also makes a huge difference on verification, both power usage and processing speed. So syncing a node or a lightweight wallet (which doesn't exist, but maybe someday) on low-powered devices is much more efficient.

Smooth's response on this issue:

And in plain English? In a sentence

0-mix transactions, with suitable restrictions on use (as AEON has), do not cause any serious problems, and make AEON more useful.

Do you guys have a Slack or Telegram group?

I think there is, as I see people in the IRC channel being gatewayed. I don't know the details of how to sign up for those though (but if someone wants to provide that info, I can add it to the OP).

@smooth. Thank you for replying at every question meticulously. It is good to know that you are not going away from the project. Are the other Monero developers like fluffypony helping out? Aeon could be the future of proof of work if you are able to create an efficient full node that will run on old computers and smart phones. Maybe the next step is to have an efficient POW platform with smart contract capabilities.

I'm part of the Monero core team. There is no official connection between the projects but in practice we cooperate on solving problems and moving forward with development on both.

Important upgrade Phoenix (0.9.7.1)

This is a necessary point release of AEON Phoenix and is a strongly, strongly recommended update.

Includes preliminary code for support for ringct (not yet functional or enabled)
Include upstream fixes
Performance improvement on non-Intel platforms

Known issue: coretests (and possibly other unit tests) fails to compile, as was the case in previous versions. This can be safely ignored. As long as a non-parallel build is used (do NOT use make -j), this error will occur after the wallet and daemon binaries are already built.

There no binaries yet. Windows binaries will be added ASAP. Community-supported binaries from trusted community members are welcome.

How large is the blockchain of this coin and how hard is it to use the CLI? I'm not used to the command line but I know I can learn it with a little guidance from the aeon community.

The blockchain is about 4 GB on disk. There is an experimental pruned version that runs smaller.

As far as the CLI, I guess different people have different views on it. I find commands like transfer, balance, etc. to be pretty easy to handle.

How to get this coin in solo?

If you want to solo mine you need the daemon then you can start with:

./aeond --start-mining {your-address} --mining-threads {number-of-threads}

I don't think there is a way to solo mine with a GPU unless you set up your own pool.

I was trying to build Aeon 0.9.7.1 today on macOS (10.12.3), but I am getting a warning at 25% for "skein.c.o", and next an error at 26% for "slow-hash.c.o". This is on a Mac with Haswell CPU.

Details posted at http://pastebin.com/ATJNgpSP.

FYI, I built the previous release on macOS using brew, so I can't compare. Any ideas?

hi  , so i followed this :

Mining:1. Compile from source code.
2. Launch aeond and wait until it is synchronized.
3. Launch simplewallet --generate-new-wallet=wallet_name.bin --pass=12345
4. Start mining from the wallet using start_mining command

How do i know it actually doing anything , nothing gets echoed to the screen
