1721  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: NXT Fly to the moon in 2014 on: June 04, 2014, 04:12:12 PM

UMMM slight problem with your thesis. Qora, BCNext's proper project is up and running, who wants NXT 1.0 when they can have NXT 2.0. bye bye...

please explain what makes qora nxt 2.0

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=579858.0

Qora has some refinements on NXT like the forging is an algorithm that includes other factors not just size of stake. The assett exchange is planned in a few weeks so thats when we can see how well Qora has implemented everything.

Thank you for the reply. I've seen the threads that make the claim of bcnext = qora dev, however this in an of itself does not = nxt 2.0.

I'm not sure the nxt 2.0 claim is valid. And I'm open to hearing more arguments on why Qora = nxt 2.0 but I don't see it yet.

satoshi is a genius but he is not the one coding bitcoin what it is today.
jr willit is a genius but he is not the one coding msc what it is today.
bcnext is a genius but he is not the one coding nxt what it is today.

Do you see my pattern? These geniuses started a movement but that does not mean that every idea they have is gold. Nxt has first mover advantage, and one hell of a team.

Qora for some reason always makes me think of the Last Airbender. lol

well I respect you are actually listening to my reply and not trying to create FUD to push the price down or simply not interested in finding out.

I won't hype Qora to you, NXT is great, Bitcoin is great. I think most believers in Qora have been created by following him how he operates over the last few months. It's a fair point about how coins have developed and I think Qora is a bit of an eccentric genius. he didn't turn up for a few days after the IPO just cause he was busy checking PM's. people were assuming the worst that he went AWOL.

I think in the end it will be how user friendly he implements the asset exchange. Thing is in my opinion NXT had the problem of too many cooks, I personally hate using any of the wallets. Qoras plan is to be as user friendly and as simple as possible.

And if it is BCNext you have to admit any NXT believer can't really discount a BCNext project. At the very worst I believe it's a new code so that makes it a rare thing and puts it potentially in the same category of NXT not just being a clone of NXT. I mean systems like Emunie that were planned had these functions but people were going crazy at the prospect of it. Qora has little fanfare so far. Yeah NXT has some overlap with Qoras functions but we shouldn't confuse function similarity with implementation. It's like saying Windows is the same as OS cause it does the same job. Implementation is everything. What I personally like about Qora is the focus on being future proof.

If you look at the top coins they all deserve to be there due to their innovation. That's why I'm sure it will be a major contender in some form or another. In the end I agree with the Qora developer when he said this:

"I believe that the features of cryptocurrencies will not decide which one will survive and which one not.
Some features will become useless and some will become standard in all cryptocurrencies.
I believe that at the end the most documented/user-friendly cryptocurrency will dominate.
Getting to this point might still take a few years."

The landscape of top-performing coins in cryptocurrency has shifted again, with the meteoric rise of altcoin Nextcoin to beat Darkcoin to third place.

While we recently reported on Darkcoin’s attaining the honored position of the fourth biggest currency, solid new features added to an already strong framework have allowed Nextcoin to storm into the top three.

As forexminute reports, the release of Nextcoin’s new asset exchange sent its value soaring, with its minimum market cap reaching US$39million on May 29 following release day. And it kept on going, with reported sell-offs of Darkcoin for other altcoins, to reach a cap yesterday of over US$60million.

The coin is already known for its less resource-intensive mining, a major factor in drawing in its dedicated client base since its inception. Add to this 100% proof-of-stake and it is clear why NXT is giving the likes of Dogecoin, which still licking its wounds after a disastrous previous month, a run for their money.

For the meantime, Nxt seems to be a clear winner. The coin, after the launch of its asset exchange at around May 29th, has shown immense growth. It’s last known minimum market cap was recorded over $39m on the aforementioned date. This was also the time when most of the Darkcoin users said to have been exchanging their coin with other altcoins. We believe this was the same time during which Nxt saw a massive jump in its market cap and value. The coin kept on increasing, and is currently wearing the market cap worth over $58m.

The Quick Nxt Recap
Nxt was launched few months ago with a factor no other cryptocurrency have, that is a unique source code. While the most popular and successful altcoins we know today are nothing but a twisted version of Bitcoin, Nxt emerged as the only coin that broke the shackles of Bitcoin’s shadow and created its own path to beat this master of digital currencies.

Nxt offered what Bitcoin simply lacked, which is eco-friendly mining, more secure and fast thanks to transparent forging, and none the least its feature of 100% Proof of Stake. Although the coin had its own troubles, such as users finding it too complex because of it being too technical, but its talented team of developers quickly responded by updating its client and making it more user-friendly.

We simply believe Grin that Nxt somewhat deserved a chance just for being a different version of digital currency let alone the better-than-Bitcoin hype. Now with the coin being on the top three market caps, there is hopefully a large quantity of investors and merchants looking towards circulating this next gen gem.

The rise has been so subtle that it was overshadowed by Darkcoin’s meteoric ascent, despite Nxt having surpassed it in rank.

Volume has been moderate: currently $320,000 worth traded over the past 24 hours. While this doesn’t compare with Darkcoin’s traded volumes, it is still a far cry from those of most other coins. It suggests that traders are genuinely willing to trade the coin at the posted prices.

Nxt is still well off its all-time highs set earlier this year, like most coins. In January, it briefly traded for the equivalent of $0.10.

Like Bitcoin, the cause for Nxt’s recent rise is unclear. Some have speculated that a spate of recent announcements for newly added features set off a surge in demand, although such announcements were not infrequent even 3 months ago. Either way, one gets a sense that the crypto world is growing weary of the many altcoins piggybacking off of Bitcoin and are looking for something different.

In fact I suggest you turn this into a marketing thing. have a competition for a few weeks for people to make a video.

I'm not in charge. I'm doing my best, but I'm not in charge. So either you or anyone else is totally welcome to do a marketing thing out of anything you want. Just make an announcement, decide an amount of a reward and if there's not enough coins in the marketing fund just gather more money.
I guess it was your "Nah, we're good."  which suggested as a community it wasn't interested. People do kind of look toward you for direction whether you want the job or not.

I meant that if lyynx's does script and voice over and I do illustrations and animation it'll be way better than if we use a constructor website.

Also I don't think such job could be done by community as a contest or something like that. There should be a team in order to create professional video and no team would take part in a contest. We're lucky lyynx's can do both script and voice over and I can do illustrations and animation. Otherwise there would need to be 4 people.

Nxt has a great video and its creator wants $4000 for making something similar for Qora. And it's really cheap by the way. Can you imaging people with such skills making tons of videos just with hope of winning a contest?

Ok fair enough, lets go the team way. I still recommend you guys use Wideo or something similar otherwise a mix of styles could look crap. I have some knowledge of video production, its not as easy as sticking a few nice images and having a voice over unless you want it to look amateurish.

I'll hope for the best though.

Yeah I might do a video competition but I want a few other people to think its a good idea and give feedback on pros and cons before I think about starting a thread. My one concern is we don't have much detailed info to put in a video, any video could just come across as vague. Maybe once colored coins and the gui is more developed would be a better time.

I can personally put 1M into a prize. Anyone else pledging more ontop would only help interest.

Re: "No one ever buys cryptocoins with the intention of never selling them, ever. I think we can agree on that."

It depends on what you mean by word "sell". If it's exchanging for $ with different rate then I disagree.
Some people will buy NXT coins just to issue assets. Some people will buy them just to prepay for secure messaging.
Some to be able to regularly publish something (WikiLeaks).

It's interesting to be able to prepay for some services that I know I will consume in the future.
It would be nice if I could prepay for water, food, gas, electricity, taxes to avoid future price hikes, but I can't because providers of these services never take obligation of future delivery disregarding price in $ (X gallons of water or X gallons of gas, or X pieces of bread, e.t.c.). Even internet service providers store prepaid balance in $ instead of months or gigabytes.
With coins I can actually prepay for something and never exchange them back to $.
The only thing that can disrupt my prepaid services is existence of QORA coin network.

...
It's nice to see someone actually absorbed what I said and the gears in their brain are actually turning to produce a response.

You are mostly right. But I didn't say buying into an IPO is a loan, I did say that mechanically they are the same. I guess maybe I needed to be more specific and say a "crypto IPO"? You are correct in that in essence it is a sale in its most basic sense. But this sale is made with the intention of returning these coins to the market. Correct?

No one ever buys cryptocoins with the intention of never selling them, ever. I think we can agree on that.
If you buy into cryptocoins with the intention of selling them at a later point, again, I stand by what I said, that is the same as loan. You are "loaning" your money to the market or an investor with the intention of making that money back with interest in the future. Whether your funds go to one party (developer) and are returned through another (market) makes no difference in this argument.

I just did a search, first one was this but ai think there are a few. I wouldn't cut and paste your own images it looks crap.

http://wideo.co

Nah, we're good.

all the major videos for coins were done on sites like this, if you cut and paste stuff it will look unprofessional.

Why would you decide for the whole community to purposely make something that looked crap?

With a bit of time anyone can make something like this below. Why would anyone choose to do a cut and paste job???

In fact I suggest you turn this into a marketing thing. have a competition for a few weeks for people to make a video. Give a list of information that ideally will be in the video. Create a thread and give a bounty to the winner. A lot can be done even if you never made a video in your whole life with sites like Wideo.

Almost a day keep the wallet online as blocks, it is still not generated. Sad
What I do not like this?

1, make sure it is unlocked
2, make sure u have enough Qora
1.+
2. Enough is how much?

Still no PoS info forth coming. But, I guess you'll have to have at least 500k before you see any PoS blocks come your way.

The algorithm includes an element of luck/Random just like mining so it should be better than NXT in terms of only getting blocks if you have a big balance.

all this is bs.

apart from that it would be terrible for qora.
it would make it a disguised 2.0 copy paste clone where he disappears again with a decent stake.

also: if you love his creations so much, why not invest in nxt?

can't a developer make a new coded coin?

Seems to me he got tired of how NXT was spoiled by too many cooks and decided to make his next development more as a solo project.
1734  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Qora | Released 16 May | 100% POS | New Source on: May 28, 2014, 09:11:44 AM
So, anyone got an idea as to how the POS algo can be checked. Or the whole code.

Blindly trusting the dev is really an issue.

I am not saying that anything is wrong. What I am saying though is, that the current state of Qora leaves a lot of serious attack vectors open.

I am aware that showing the source will lead to a clonefest. But maybe there is another way to have the code checked without it excaping into the wild.

This is a valid and important question. Something can walk like a duck, and quack like a duck, and yet not be a duck. We all know that Qora can do the basics - send/receive funds, register/buy/sell an alias, etc - but as a community we have zero proof that it is a crypto currency in the normal sense. It's likely that some people have examined the obfuscated code, either to find attack vectors or to satisfy themselves that it is a sound investment, but if so the results aren't being shared.

It's fine to have faith in the dev to a certain point, and those who were involved in the IPO (myself included) have struck lucky in the sense that he appears to have delivered the goods. But outside investors putting in their hard earned money will be put off by this "black box" coin, as will the enterprising individuals who will need to build the surrounding services that are required if Qora is to be a success. If I had no Qora, I wouldn't buy 50 million at today's prices with today's information (although I would buy a lesser amount).

I also understand the concerns about open sourcing the code leading to it being cloned. Nxt (whose code was never obfuscated) managed a staged release of the code, an approach which worked well. Can we do the same?

I would ask the dev to release a white paper describing the Qora design, in particular the PoS algorithm, the crypto aspects, and P2P aspects, and any other aspects that are innovative or unique to Qora. Can be brief, nothing fancy. Can be written and edited by a trusted forum member after a short Q&A session with the dev, if he's short on time and busy with coding. This won't help those building clones in any way (it's only the design, not the implementation), but it would go some way towards getting Qora accepted in the wider community.

Some extensive Q&A might be a good point to start at. Though, going about and gathering questions for a while is something needed to be done first. There's no sense in bombarding Qora with a stream of senseless and repetitive questions.
What would also be an interesting vector to approach the whole situation, is taking the cryptpgraphic part of the code only and release it. The part of the code that makes sure the data stored is actually secure.

The POS might be new but I see it as the minor problem as long as it doesn't offer any advantages for specific groups of users.

Also, from a lot of the replies here I start to understand why it is so incredible easy to make money in the crypto world.

Edit:
What a lot of people here obviously don't realize is, that Qora (as well as NXT) are startups. These are not currencies. They are very similar to ripple. And that "coin" has hell of a code. A real masterpiece. But they made some terrible mistakes on the way. Obviously crypto world does not accept premine. Not the tiniest bit. (As long as it is not served in a nice wrapper)

Currently a lot of people here at the Qora crowd seem to rely mostly on the "greater dumb" theory. If I come from the outside, why should I buy this coin? I don't hear any reasons but apple logic. Only this is not apple.

Is there a plan? Is this even legit? Where can I get all the info I need?

You seem to be under the illusion the future of Qora depends on you personally 'understanding' it.

How can I break this to you...
1735  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Qora | Released 16 May | 100% POS | New Source on: May 27, 2014, 09:19:07 AM
Hi and hello..

I'd like to make my own shitcoin and make 10,000 BTC appear out of thin air.

This volume is fake right ?

Are people really that addicted to rackets ? ponzis ? pyramids ?

How is this any different than the bankster's fractional reserve ?

You and I are generally in agreement about the cancer that is shitcoins. Almost every coin these days is a blatant scam, or has a huge premine, or a thinly disguised instamine that is only there to line the dev's pockets before he moves onto his next shitcoin.

But if you place Qora into that category, I wonder what you consider not to be a shitcoin.

Qora has been developed from scratch. There are clearly some concepts that have carried over from Bitcoin and Nxt, but much of the design and all of the implementation are completely new. It is a real competitor to both Bitcoin and Nxt, and that can only be a good thing for crypto currencies in general. It has features that neither Bitcoin nor Nxt have. It has an active and responsive developer, who appears to be focussing on the important tasks (core code development) rather than putting up a flashy website and waiting for the cash to come rolling in.

As such, it brings real value to the crypto community; it cannot be compared to the shitcoins whose only purpose is to make some copy/paste "devs" rich.

As the code is not yet open source (for understandable reasons), it cannot be examined, and for this reason I still consider Qora a medium/high risk investment; and 100 sat price seems about right. Over time, as bugs are ironed out, and the design and implementation are properly examined, this risk will reduce and (if no major issues found) the price is likely to increase. I don't consider something a "ponzi" if you are exchanging money for real value.

In the same way that you like to draw attention to shittness where you see it, if you see a coin adding value then you should support it (even if you don't buy it). Otherwise, what are you doing here?

As for your point: yes, if you are a competent developer with some good ideas, then please feel free to make a new coin; if it's good and brings something new then I'll support it. If all it has is an animated icon, then thanks but I'll pass Wink

Proposed GUI Dashboard - QORA v.0.1.0

How does this look?

Any feedback colors/organization would be appreciated.. Please PM with suggestions.

Disclaimer: This does not represent the final deterministic wallet GUI. It is just an example I have been working on.
I am NOT held responsible for inaccurate representation of the GUI that might change per feedback.
Never invest more than you can afford to lose.

No I am not the other. Been doing some homework (JSON, CLI, etc..) for a week on the backend stuff (how to's etc...). Uber security settings with Soft/Hard security...
No idea if qora is BCnext. Would be nice to chat with BCnext one day... Say hi to him if you get to chat.. I am just trying to help out... Even chatting with qora is nice.  Cool

I am currently working a GUI for a Deterministic wallet (bootstrap 3, etc... for all devices) and will have a preview in the next few hours.
Just have to hook up Command Line Interface (CLI) etc... Working on the backend stuff too (cloudflare, hardening, etc...)
I love pretty things  Wink

As far as development goes I am responsible for about 90% of it and there is one other person that helps me out with stuff that is not related to the core like the GUI and API. (The API will be completely reworked before the release.)

ASIC-8Tile are you the other person qora is talking about? seems like you have been busy working for some time on this if you have preview ready.
can you tell us if qora is BCnext?   Cheesy

You are clearly talented and are a good designer but can I suggest if you are involved in some way with GUI that you not only keep it simple but also what has to be complicated (colored coins etc) be hidden in menus. What I mean by that is that most of the menus on the right can be hidden. People want a simple payment page 95% of the time, the rest can be hidden or just a few menus options showing like Trade, Message etc, more than 5 and your starting to look complicated.

Its far from the perfect solution but I suggest you log onto Ripple to get an idea of how to do it. I think you have the skills to make the first decent GUI for a 2nd gen cryptocurrency that is completely user friendly and stylish. I hope you stick with Qora and get involved in that area. A streamlined GUI will in my opinion single out Qora from NXT in the end. The whole decentralised trading thing hasn't been cracked yet imo.

And yeah I am like others negative about the whole dashboard thing, weather etc. i don't think people want paying and trading mixed up with other stuff but I'm sure that's another separate project that has legs. It could even open up a portal to anonymous internet use combined with payments etc..

it's nice to see there is all ready an effort (kora) to fork qora - another reason not to release qora source code to early  Grin

(I have a feeling that once it's released qora is going to be the reference source code in the complete altcoin 2.0 section).

What will kora do if the dev will not release the source code?

We will issue 'Kora tokens' to ~3,000 stakeholders on the NXT AE (similar to NEM) as an interim solution, so people will be able to spend & trade their 'Kora tokens' using the NXT ecosystem long before the Qora source is released.

Once the Qora source is released (whenever that is) 'Kora token' holders will send them back to the 'Kora token' issuer who will exchange them for Kora coins once the Kora network is up and Running.

I really hope they don't completely publicly release the source code just so I can watch you explain to people you sold them tokens for a coin that doesn't exist.

Should not Qora already be in coinmarketcap?

TwinWinNerD and I already PMd coinmarketcap owner, so I think Qora should be there after the next update.

Coinmarketcap is one of best ways to get the word out for a new coin. Problem is the coin icon doesn't have a website to link to which is a shame. I guess if it goes to this thread its ok.

Maybe Wesly from NXT can build a good user friendly Client for Qora... What do you guys think?

I think the client setup is to complicated for people without many computer knowledge..

Do you really think his client for NXT is user friendly?

I think its a cluttered mess, possibly not his fault as he had to put what others wanted in the wallet but still.

Qora could be a bit more easy to run without people having to click run bat, but otherwise it seems pretty easy to me and I'm no techie. All that stuff is secondary and cosmetic compared to getting the functions of the wallet sorted. There are plans from Qora for a webwallet later I think...

I think people prefer to have their wallet on their computer honestly, I think psychologically they feel its safer and they have control of it.

In compare with nxt web client - qora wallet is ugly  Wink It is fact. No matter what technologies been used to build it, web or standalone.

I think you are mixing up user friendly and attractive. The client is very user friendly and later they will put some effort into the look, thats been Qora plan from he start. We are still in early development. And anyway if you want a great designed wallet then why not use Ripple? A coin is more than how 'pretty' it looks. The bitcoin clients are usually pretty basic but are great to use.
