901  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: How do I secure my wallet on: June 10, 2023, 02:30:26 PM
Electrum is a non-custodial wallet which means that it gives you full access to your private keys. Since electrum is open-source and its code has been reviewed by many people, you can be sure that it's secure enough.

Note that if you want your fund to be completely secure, you should run electrum on an airgapped device. Any online device is always prone to hacking.
Electrum wallet is free, open source, non custodial and good to use. It has many 'modes' to use like single signature wallet, multi signature wallet, cold storage ...

Always download it from the official website : https://electrum.org/#download and verify the wallet.

OP, when you use a non custodial wallet, always backup your wallet. Without backups, you will lose your bitcoin if your original device gets technical problems and can not be recovered.
902  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Reminder] hey bitcoiners, Did you forget to read the updates on terms&policies? on: June 10, 2023, 12:05:46 PM
How often do you check if there are any changes or updates on the platform you are using?
If they don't read Terms of Service (ToS) before or after creating their accounts, they will not mind to follow up ToS upgrades.

Many people use exchange accounts and given receiving addresses like their non custodial wallets to store their coins. With this mind, they think their coins will be safe and they don't mind to check their accounts after long time. With those people, reading ToS, following its changes are something impossible.

Following it regularly is good but not enough, because they can announce changes and shut down their platforms. Therefore following this

904  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which platform is safe to store Bitcoin and can’t be hacked ? on: June 09, 2023, 02:24:27 PM
We used to think so, but I think that after everything that has happened and what is currently happening with some hardware wallets, we should no longer treat them in the same way as before. The only way we can be somewhat sure that someone will not hack us is to create an airgapped wallet, and after that to protect the backup by saving it in the safest possible place, noting that we should always have one additional backup that would be stored in some alternative location. Everything else is a risk, and the only difference is how big that risk is.
Even no bad upgrades like Ledger wallet with Ledger Recovery Service, the best wallet for each person is what he can afford to have it, if not free, must afford to buy it, and can use it appropriately in security and privacy.

Like if I don't have a hardware wallet, I can still use Bitcoin Core or Electrum wallet with cold storage or multisig setup. Free and good to use so it is best for me.

905  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which platform is safe to store Bitcoin and can’t be hacked ? on: June 09, 2023, 12:13:16 PM
You should not store your bitcoin on any platform. If you store it on any platform, you fall into this.
Reminder: do not keep your money in online accounts

Store your bitcoins in non custodial wallet, if open source it is better, because you will own private key and entirely control your bitcoin and transactions you want to make.

906  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some possible ways to avoid phishing attacks and scams on: June 09, 2023, 11:52:42 AM
usually i have a Personal Computer that I use currently so it won't be of that bad to me, but most at times i often use my smartphone reply some comments over here.
From what you said so far, I will logout my mail from Smartphone to safeguard my fund since my phone can get stolen anytime.
It is a good prevention but always remember that you should never store all eggs in one bag. Eggs in this context is your coins, tokens. Don't store all of them in one wallet and on one device.

Especially if you use that device to connect to Internet and do many things which might expose your computer to virus, malwares, trojans and so on.

A biggest part of your capital should be stored offline, in an airgap device, cold wallet or hardrware wallet.
907  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some possible ways to avoid phishing attacks and scams on: June 09, 2023, 08:35:10 AM
What about those who do not have a second device to store their 2FA, does it mean they can't use same device install their 2fa?
They can but if they can have a second device for 2FA, it's better. My post is a reminder for people who can have two devices but carelessly login all things in only one device, including 2FA. Like if you have a computer, you can login your email, exchange account on it, and 2FA will be on your smartphone.

Imagine, if your computer is compromised, your fund won't be stolen because 2FA is on your phone which is not connected to your computer.
Same for if you lose your smart phone, nobody can steal your fund with only 2FA on that device.

Quote
Please I am only asking to know because I am planning of getting it installed in my phone but reading this gets me paused because I do only have a single device which is my smartphone and I don't have any money to further get another device.
Just don't login your email on your phone. Only login your email if you want to withdraw your fund from exchanges.

Let me explain it
  • Usually exchange will ask for confirmation codes in 2FA and email when you submit a withdrawal request.
  • If you don't login your email on that phone, you won't lose your fund even that smartphone is lost.

Always backup your 2FA code. You will need that code to recover your 2FA later.

I think if there is an application then you are not prohibited from writing on the website. like Quora, it has an app and a web version. That Quora is a question and answer platform so answers can be more than 1,000 characters.
Quora, Reddit, many platforms but if it is a platform for text-based discussions, typing on mobile is painful.

Quote
In bitcointalk, we only write about 100-200 characters.
Are you sure all posters limit themselves to 100 or 200 characters for each post?

Quote
The app also makes it simple to check notifications when you're outside
Depends on each person's need but don't let notifications ruin other more important things.

Quote
Do you mean that PC/Laptops are safer than mobile devices? I think there is no guarantee for your statement about this
Safer or not, depend on how you use your laptop, PC and mobile devices but generally you are more easily to lose your mobile devices than losing your laptop.

You misunderstood my post. I mean security of your device, whatever it is laptop, pc, mobile, will be in risk if you install too many softwares, applications. The less softwares, applications on your devices, the better, in security-wise.
909  Other / Meta / Re: Change the logo board and subboard on: June 08, 2023, 11:35:22 PM
10 years ago, we didn't think there would be smartphones. 10 years later we don't know what will happen. Maybe people will use smartphones more for typing...
It is not about smart phones but about inconvenience when you have to type text for your posts on smart phones, without key boards and with limited screen size. If you type a short post, it can be usable but if it is a long post, it becomes a problem.

Clearly, lengthy of a post does not automatically cause it zero, low or high quality.

Security of your device is another problem. If I have choice, I don't install many applications on my device. In addition, it can harm your privacy too as applications can trace your activities.
910  Other / Meta / Re: Change the logo board and subboard on: June 08, 2023, 01:49:58 PM
I would also like to propose that bitcointalk has own app
Another old and repeatedly question/ suggestion.

About an application, mobile application for bitcointalk forum, it is unnecessary in my opinion. Maybe young users will like applications as they can ask for applications everywhere.

Old school guys might think different including me.
  • We don't need to install too many applications on our devices. First, waste of device resource. Second, it contains more risky security.
  • Most important, the forum is a text-based one for text discussions so I am not feel convenient when typing on my phones.
911  Other / Meta / Re: Change the logo board and subboard on: June 08, 2023, 01:27:54 PM
I see the logo on the left of the board and the subboard looks like a triangle. Would it be more interesting if it was changed? Like the BTC logo for bitcoin and other logo for another board and subboard.
Some members in the community will complain that those new board icons make the forum like a circus. The forum is kind of for old school style and they don't like cartoons, animations and colorful things. I am not against your idea but with my experience here, I think it will not be supported by community.

If currency icons for altcoins are not considered and deployed officially, you would not expect your proposal will be approved.

Can administrators do that?

Maybe it's not that important.
It's not important and admins won't be ready to spend time doing this.
912  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Some possible ways to avoid phishing attacks and scams on: June 08, 2023, 01:01:24 PM
Utilize two-factor authentication
When you use Two-factor Authentication (2FA), you must store the 2FA on a second device of yours. It should be a different device than a first device that is used to login your exchange account or email account - that is used to register your exchange account.

If you log in your email, your exchange account on a same device you install your 2FA, it is a bad practice and break protection of 2FA. If you lose that device access, you will lose all (email, exchange account, 2FA and coins). You can not hope that the exchange will detect suspicious activities on your account and temporary lock it or reject withdrawal request. Exchange might trigger it or not, you can not control.

7. Don't generate a post using A.I "especially Chat G.P.T" as it is against the non-written forum rules.
The rule for it is, Plagiarism.

Copy and paste AI-generated content without source (I doubt such posters will leave AI sources) is plagiarism. The same for any tool you use to get content but not write it from your mind, by yourself.
916  Other / Meta / Re: Monthly Report Statistics on: June 06, 2023, 02:48:15 PM
That's why I think theymos should implement something like  reporting badges with some small perks so there's at least some incentive.
theymos can deploy the badge anytime he wants. Problem is theymos does not want to do that. I recall that theymos wrote he does not want to deploy to many badges and make user profiles like rainbows.

Sorry for the wait, when I went to implement this it ended up being quite a bit more of a can of worms than I originally thought because of opting out, preventing certain report-count-padding strategies, etc. It's still on my to-do list, but there are several things above it.

Meanwhile, we have [Userscript] Unofficial Bitcointalk Reporter Badges
917  Other / Off-topic / Re: A post about telegram scams on: June 06, 2023, 02:31:57 PM
Exactly. Scammers use psychological tactics to pressure individuals into making hasty decisions without proper judgement. An objective evaluation of the information is recommended. If it's really not related to anything at all or work related, ignore it, if necessary, just block the one with full memory, and that's what I did.
Generally you don't need to be a security expert or a technical expert to avoid common scams. Because if you are not greed, you reduce risk to be scammed. If you are careful with Internet surfing, you reduce risk to be scammed. Combination of them are enough to minimize your risk to be scammed a lot.

Knowledge about those advanced steps is helpful but not your first prevention against scams.

Pressure on you to make you uncertain, fearful, panic and greed is very common approach from scammers to get you in their traps. If someone press a pressure button on you and you can not verify that request, information, just don't do anything, you won't be scammed.
918  Other / Off-topic / Re: A post about telegram scams on: June 04, 2023, 02:20:45 PM
When you download files from a paradise for scammers like Telegram, you have big risk for malicious files, malwares which potentially infected your devices and steal sensitive information.

Settings > Advanced > Automatic media download. Turn off Files for In private chats, In groups, In channels.

Turn it off to reduce risk of automatic downloading files which are potentially hazardous.
919  Other / Meta / Re: [Request] SMF patch for user topic list. on: June 04, 2023, 12:31:51 PM
It would look like this:

For my money, that's a strict improvement (i.e. it's tidier, it takes up less vertical space, and it replaces an effectively dead link with a useful one).
I really like the patch and its visualization which is neat, very neat.

I asked myself long time ago that why forum disabled user stats page but did not remove that line "Show general statistics for this member." Thinking about it repeatedly I come to my answer that maybe the admin did not exclude to re-enable it in future so he just left it there like that. It would be more time consuming to disable, re-enable minor things.

Manchester City 2 - 1 Manchester United
Gundogan scored first an early goal since the first minute then Fernandes scored the draw then Gundogan just scored the leading goal again.
Captains war there Wink
Odds are 1.2 for Manchester City and 24 for Manchester United. Interesting and risky
Manchester City dominated the first half and they even could score more than one goal but Manchester United luckily to have a penalty with a handball from Grealish. With this domination from Manchester City, they will beat Manchester United in this final.

The early goal in second half from Gundogan just makes it more clear. I won't believe Manchester City will lose control in this final easily and United have to change a lot in tactics if they want to equalize the match and win it.

Gundogan is very goal productive in the last two months and I don't have statistics about his career but I guess it is a most goal productive time in his career from Dortmund to Manchester City.

From this goal, see how Manchester United players totally forgot the area ahead of their box. Very weak defense from Manchester United.
