That are good news and also a good reason. She has said that she wants to play in the Australian Open again next year. That is certainly a bit too early. Unfortunately, it is generally difficult for women who have had a child to return to sport. Angelique Kerber, for example, had criticised the WTA rules for not protecting them from going down in the world rankings. She is also pregnant and expecting her first child in March. Kerber is currently 32 so her return to Tennis will be limited, Osaka is only 25, if she decides to return after her pregnancy she could still be a big force, that's providing she can sort out her mental issues, but I believe it won't be too late for her if she returns let's say next year.

Huh, just found out Osaka's withdrawn. No need for further comment, well documented in this thread. Didn't one of the Williams win a GS while a couple months pregnant?
Anyway: Jabeur's gotta have my money but my bookie's actually not opened Women's outrights yet (what?) so it's Nadal as my only outright (caught at sweet 12/1 odds but it's actually more like 14/1 now haha).

It's a pity that Osaka will not participate. I'm surprised she kept it hidden for so long. You knew in advance that you would have a child. Or has it just come out that she is pregnant? The tournament director of the Australian Open clearly endorses Djokovic in his statement. He has said that spectators will be evicted from the stadium if they do not whistle at Djokovic. Doesn't really seem like the way to treat fans. Supporters in tennis matches are always allowed to express their preference for a player and players are more often called out for things. You shouldn't make threats to supporters then.

Yup, Serena - she won the AO while being 2 months pregnant, aged 35 if I recall correctly. I even think that she won it without even losing a set, but I'm on a ski trip and am too tired to Google Positive news for Osaka hopefully, she had a lot of mental struggles recently.

Osaka dosent play a lot in the last year or so and that is just dissapointing. I expected a lot more from him and she just dosent play. Swiatek and Jabeur are clearly the favorites in the Australian Open this year. Swiatek maybe down in form so i would maybe choose Jabeur aswell with how good she is playing.

She is a big talent and has the power to dominate the tennis if everything is going good for her.

Right now her decision is good according to me. Different people have different view over pregnancy and physical fitness. Serena Williams was able to achieve and her fitness was supportive and the same can't be with Osaka. Atleast a year's break is necessary and to make a comeback it takes few months. In the mid of 2024 we can expect her back.

Emotional to see how Djokovic has been received by the public in Australia. He received a standing and big ovation for his return. You can ask yourself whether he deserves that, but people are there as tennis enthusiasts. He played a practice match against Kyrgios. Nice to see that 2 children were also allowed to participate in a double game competition. Kyrgios - Djkovic could also just be another match at the tournament. The public is of course completely behind Kyrgios because he is playing this tournament in his home country. Djokovic is the big favorite here. Alcaraz will not participate.

Djokovic deserved this by the crowd after what happened to him last year and he has a big group of serbian fans there aswell so things are much easier for him and he can feel like is playing at home. Never expected this two players to get a long after what happened in the years before.

Kerber is even 34 years old and will turn 35 at 18 January. I do not think that is easy for female athletes to successfully master both. Taking care of a baby takes time and energy. And you also need that for training. Serena Williams said she was never happy with the double burden. Either a baby or a sporting career. But you cannot have both at the same time. Either the baby or the sport suffers.

This is massive for him, I think I read somewhere that he was apprehensive or concerned about the reception he would get. The fact that he has been overwhelmingly welcomed back will boost his already high confidence. He has to be worth a bet for outright winner? Rollbit have him to win @1.77 with closest rival in second, Medvedev @6.3. Nadal is in fourth spot with odds of 15.0

Nadal is in fourth spot with odds of 15.0 I agree, it was an emotional return for Djokovic in the Australian Open, perhaps fans really missed him and after what he has to undergone in the covid and all the noises behind, good to see him back from Australian fan perspective. I haven't check the odds on other sport bookies, but it seems very decent to put a bet on Djokovic as outright winner. Not that bad specially if you put big amount of money, could be a good return and for sure Djokovic doesn't want his fans to see him not even reaching the finals so it's enough motivation for him to go all in in the first GS of the year.

Anyway: Jabeur's gotta have my money but my bookie's actually not opened Women's outrights yet (what?) so it's Nadal as my only outright (caught at sweet 12/1 odds but it's actually more like 14/1 now haha).
I recon it will be either No.1 Swiatek or indeed No.2 Jabeur, for me Swiatek is a bit of an unknown in 2023, I think Jabeur has been a bit more active, for the women's side I would go for either of these, but who I'm not sure yet. On the men's side I feel Nadal, like Swiatek is a bit unknown in 2023 so far, alternatively Djokovic would be a strong bet for the outright. Yeah, Swiatek's one of those I've stopped betting on (except in live if she's the favourite and she falls behind a set). Too overrated for good value odds, while Jabeur's still a consistent 2/1 in games I'm sure she wins. Still no outright for me on my bookie for women's so looks like I'm sitting this one out. Djoko outright? Hasn't been good value for a long time. You get higher odds betting on his first game with handicap...

agree, expected it a bit higher, below @2 does not make it valuable, better to hold when he loses first set, or eventually two in one match, and than put bet on him (if that even happens, since he is playing from the start lately, not giving first set easily, as on last season Wimbledon) Nadal is a mystery, but I don't think he is able to compete at high level, but that does not make it easier for Djokovic, it is an other part of the draw, and Medvedev is there as well

I get the plan of waiting/hoping he loses the first set as the favourite and claim some value, although it might not be as large as you would expect, Djokovic can go 2 sets behind and still win a match.

Nadal will start his journey in the australian open against jack draper a young player who has shown a big performance recently beating some big names on the adelaid tournament on the otherhand nadal is having a some difficulties recently and am sure he will have plenty in this game i think it will be more entertaining than expected.
Nadal isnt in form at all so we might see a surprise that he losses in the first rounds. His injury is still a problem and it is just a question how many sets and how many time can spend on the field. If he losses a set against someone it might be a huge problem especially against younger players.

I think she has made a good decision. Good luck to her new academy. She has now established a tennis coaching academy in Dubai -I am not sure why not in India
