Any given forum has to be one language, else it's chaos.  The language here is English and that's not a knock against anyone who doesn't speak it.  But it stands to reason that if one cannot  use the language properly, one will not make good posts and hence will struggle with the merits.  Users on the local boards don't necessarily have to rely on merit source members.  Any high ranked member should have sufficient sMerit to spread around.
Appreciate you reminding me, as I was more thinking of the initial outlay of sMerits we received based on current rank.  Once that supply mostly drys up, or is  at least halved, then I believe we will see a serious stagnation of ranking increases.  Even with receiving the occasional sMerit, this is just an estimate, I'm fairly certain I won't see my next forum rank for about three years.  I'm uncertain if that is the intended result.

Stephen King, a favorite author personally, sells books by weight it seems to me often, and I think he might be merit challenged the way things stand now.

Do not loose  hope. We can see changes to this merit system as well in future. Thyemos has mentioned it one of the comments. He also said that if merit system fails to control the spam on the forum, he will be forced to take more harsh decisions like completely removing signature campaigns. Ranks will become meaningless for most of the members then.

Well I think this is a great idea and it will also prevent a lot of bad posts on this forum.  But I also think that very soon this will turn to a commodity that people will start buying and selling since it will be bestowed by members to member. I think it shouldn't be directly from a member rather member can easily recommend a post to be merited and there will be some sort of moderators that will check and finally merit the post. If this is not a long shot.
Great work

I already don't like the way clicking on +merit takes you away from the thread.  Can you please have it open in a new window?

Well, after seeing your post (the quoted one) with all the merit, it looks like, the more merit you have, the more likely you are to get some from peaople...

That is an exception. Consider it as a reward for a member making a quick witty reply to an announcement from the admin.

If a post is really spam or otherwise absolute garbage, you already have available to you a means of not only “demeriting” it, but asking for it to be deleted:  That handy “Report to moderator” link you see in the lower right-hand corner of every post.

If a post that has been merited is removed, does the user that created the post lose the associated Merits or sMerits?  I thought they got to keep both, but that's the only situation were I think the concept of demerit might work well.  If the post no longer exists on the forum, it's hard to argue that it deserves any forum merit.

I don't think so based on it being stated that merits are permanent, unless i guess if a mod/admin takes them away. So i assume your merit stays.

Merit system has demonstrated its strong, significant, positive impacts on the forum's users, especially lower-ranked users.

Before the launch of merit system, lower-ranked users likely posted extremely low/ under quality topics/ threads, which didn't contribute anything to the forum and other users. They posted only for their financial purposes.
After merit system's appearance, something have changed dramatically, as you can check by yourself and for yourself if you interested. Those changes are very easy to find.

I hope the system will succeed in eliminate spammers out of the forum forever.

I've thought about the right time part before.. and if getting on the first page of popular threads is about timing (on the english speaking parts of the forum) then those always awake in certain time zones are likely going to reap more rewards purely by timing, while the rest will be on supplemental pages and get less to none.

I know the goal is not to try and be on the front page to get merit etc., but my point is some may invariably get it a lot while some will get very little based on timing.

That might be true to an extent but it depends on the type of thread. Some evolve into discussions and you can get merit many pages into those if you're contributing to the debate.

Yes, this is also true, but i tend to think of threads like google serps: the first page(s) read often, and the most recent page(s), the newest ones such as the last ones also. While everything in between gets viewed much less.

For example i have not read many of the pages from 3 to ~100+ on this thread due to sheer size & not being on constantly.

Are there some metrics on the merit system available for public consumption?

Some metrics could be useful to get a more objective view on the dynamics and impact of the merit system. Some simple ones that come to mind immediately:

 • Merits and sMerits in the system (for sMerits of course excluding the faucets / sources)
 • Average daily flow of sMerits
 • Ratio of posts to sMerits allocated per time span (day / week)
 • Ratio of (active) users and sMerits allocated
 • Average time between post and receiving sMerit
 • Distribution of number of sMerits received for merited posts

The merit system is actually an interesting live social sciences case study in incentivisation.

I was a Jr. Member at the inception of the merit system.  I started with zero.  Whiners, shut up and observe the number below my name.

Hint:  To make relatively quick posts such as this one, I am periodically pausing from another post I’ve been working on for hours.  I maintain a semi-disorganized queue of those.

It’s not necessary to put that much time and effort into posts, because it’s not necessary to earn 100+ merit per week simply to rank up.  I am only doing now just as I did in December, before the merit system existed.  Whereas if you are a reasonably intelligent person who spends a moderate amount of time on the forum, then I think you should be able to earn an average at least +1 merit per day.  That would allow you to rise through the ranks at approximately the same rate as you would by activity level alone.  The system is well-thought.

Whereas if you can’t earn at least one measly merit per day of active posting, what that means ipso facto is that your posts are of such low quality that you are wasting other people’s time by posting junk for others to read.  The merit system is a not-so-gentle hint that you should stop.

Hi,

Would you be able to quote here the links to some of the recent posts that got your a lot of merit points? I think that would be useful for everybody to see.
I know i would be interested to know

This is a great example of a quality post worth taking 3 merits points. By making fun of others... Here is your example

Stephen King, a favorite author personally, sells books by weight it seems to me often, and I think he might be merit challenged the way things stand now.

It seems like that sometimes.

But some authors like Charles Dickens dragged out their books because they sold it in multiple installments (not exactly paid by the word, as some claim - see https://dickens.ucsc.edu/resources/faq/by-the-word.html).

Create an interesting topic, write something meaningful there and if the other users find it useful you might get you some merit.
For example, I've created that topic with a list of privacy coins, and I've already got few merits - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2869616.0
However, I agree the merit is quite difficult to get and for me, it could take a long time to upgrade to Full Member.
But I believe the main goal of this forum is to exchange information and ideas, not to upgrade ranks.

Is there a possibility of a revision in the system? For those of us who participate in 90% of a local (Portuguese) tab, it will be difficult to get the necessary amount to level up, due to the scarcity of sMerits in our community.

My suggestion is that sMerits be renewed with each activity cycle, according to the rank of each user.

Sorry for my bad English.

I actually got 10 needed merit for promotion and I am waiting for Activity points now... If you post some higher quality post from time to time, you will get some. Sure it might not be super fast, but still, you will earn some. I got most of my measly 10 Merit from a single post, where i analysed the blood bath that has occured. That was a quality post I was proud of. You need to post something you are really proud of and that has good informative value to the others.
