I like this pool but I am leaving it due to the very real implications of a single entity holding the majority of the networks processing power

I would encourage Tycho to disable new registrations.  The whole point of bitcoin's p2p methodology is so that >50% of the network is NOT handled by a single entity!  For the sake of the currency that your business is modeled upon, you should stop new registrants.

I support your notion

But I am not leaving deepbit :p I hope others will grow to catch up. If need be, I will move my 3-4 Gh/s to another pool

We are past 2TH/s, while deepbit's hashrate is ~0.9TH/s, so he's still under 50% for now  Cool More like 45%... once we hit the 50% mark, THEN he can temporarily close registration until he is at 45% again or something.

you may close registrations but how can you stop the existing users from increasing their hashrate?  Tongue

If Tycho was going rogue anyway, all he'd have to do is DDOS Slush and maybe BTC Mine. Then a lot of those users would either be offline or even move to his pool (like last time), making his hashing power well above 50%. It's strange how bad you guys are at coming up disaster scenarios for bitcoins, considering how you excel at it for fiat currency.

I've had a login problem for a while.
About a week ago I suddenly couldn't log into my deepbit account (pavonen@gmail.com) anymore, it tells me that my password is invalid. However I've been using guiminer and it always successfully logs in and works normally. The problem is I cannot withdraw my funds since I'm not able to log in to my account, and the withdraw button in guiminer cannot be pressed (used to work, not anymore). Some help would be appreciated  Smiley

There was a small problem with bitcoind at 17:00, i'm fixing it now. Looks like it was the cause.

Your last password change was 02.05.2011 (more than two weeks ago). Is this correct ? If yes, then you just forgot your password.
Withdraw button doesn't works for you because your bitcoin address was reset. I'm going to implement password retrieval soon.
PM me if you don't want to wait.

I'm still getting more than usual i think. I was having around 0.19% stale over 100k shares life-time and the last 1.5 days, it went up to 0.25% really fast. Not sure what the reason is, i'm still using Guiminer as before and i hasn't changed any settings.

I know this is kind of OT.

I'm formatting/changing my drive(s) soon and i've read this:
Quote
Backup

The only file you need to back up is "wallet.dat".

I make backup copy of that file and i remove receiving address from Deepbit to avoid problems.

I re-install everything and put wallet.dat back to where it belongs and i set new receiving address to Deepbit.

Is that everything i need to do, or is there any other steps i must ensure before i wipe/change my HDDs?

you don't even have to remove your recieving address, when you copy back over your backed up wallet.dat it will have the same addresses and balances and everything. in fact, you could have other miners/machines still mining to that address if you had multiple machines. just make sure you back up the wallet.dat when the bitcoin client isnt running, and make sure no one else can get access to your wallet.dat while its backed up.
