My predictions, three months ago: Bitcoin TLV `14, #25 - Guy Corem - Mining ForecastBitFury revealed their mining address two days afterwards. I didn't expect to see AntPool grow so much. Let's see how the rest of my predictions will be in 2015. You don't need water cooling to have quiet. You just need to stop designing for maximum density. Spread the chips out and use nice quiet slow big fans. That's really all water cooling is.
If the SP20 was twice as large (same number of chips, without putting 2 chips in line of the airflow) it would run much better and quieter with 2 fans.
^very true. unfortunately the shipping size/weight=cost would be about 50% more. In any case the SP20 is quite reasonable when its running at 1200GH or less.

^very true. unfortunately the shipping size/weight=cost would be about 50% more. In any case the SP20 is quite reasonable when its running at 1200GH or less. I wonder what the comparison of the shipping size/weight/cost of changing the specs of a SP20 to run cooler would be compared to adding the weight of water blocks, tubing and radiators to the box? More if its a sealed system with included liquid.

Not necessarily. If they use the Intel/AMD spacing and sell it without coolers. Similar to the Habaneros and some of the KNC (IIRC). That would allow us to use coolers we have "laying around" or source locally and actually would reduce shipping costs.

Spondoolies-Tech any chance of a water cooled miner in the future? I really don't want to buy an s5 to upgrade it with watercooling!
+1 !!! The more silent the better for me ! A watercooled SP20 would be awesome ! 'Dual sided' PCBs don't play well with blocks as you'll have to make either a really weirdly shaped one for each board or individual ones for each chip. And then you still have the problem that those board components require airflow, which they won't get due to the jungle of waterblocks. Would be interesting to see but I think a different layout would be easier to work with. And would a $600 SP20 still be awesome if its water cooled? Adding in watercoolings ads in costs across the board unfortunately. You don't need water cooling to have quiet. You just need to stop designing for maximum density. I got my Delta AFB1212SH fans (0.8amp) 15 minutes ago and it seems they are the right ones for underclocked mining in winter time?! only speaking of PWM fans, because fan control is a MUST in my opinion. best fans before I tested were the 1amp fans from Antminer S3. they are very okay at 50% and below. I did a lot of measurements in the past 1-2 weeks I try to sum up: PWMs tested: - sp20 original 2amp: very noisy, high CFM - bitmain s1 1amp: lot quieter at low pwm% - bitmain s3 1amp: even quieter but only at low pwm% - noctua 3000 0.3amp: very quiet at low pwm% but not enough CFM for >1200 GH or summer time. - some case fans like artic F12 0.3 amp and below claimed 80 CFM never ever, only okay for below 1000 GH - Delta AFB1212SH fans (0.8amp): best up to now I did db testings roughly 2 meters distance my server PSU is not the quitest, it adds at least 44 db, I think PC PSUs with 12mm fans are better. highest rating was sp20 stock fan at 68 all tests in room at 22c ambient db pwm fan ---------------------------- 68 100 org fan (2amp) full power taifun mode, still hear it through 2 closed doors and rooms 56 10 org 44 0 org (only my PSU) 50 10 s1 fan 58 100 s1 fan 50 6 s1 fan reverse

Great data, and very useful, maybe I will try Noctua on Sp20. However, this is not the delta most people use. This one is 25mm vs more typical 38mm, but has the advantage of being quieter. However, i am not sure how did you get PWM working on SP20. Did you get an adapter for the non-standard connector on Sp20? If yes, please post a link to it. Thanks

I would like to try a 38mm PWM Delta, but I doubt they will be quieter than the 1amp "JDH1238B" (also 38mm) I took from the S3. These bigger Deltas are most commonly server fans with high cfm and they don't care about noise. If someone can point me to a 38mm PWM 12V Delta with not more than 1 to 1.2 amp, I appreciate.
the probably 1:1 fitting connectors 1.5mm spacing (I posted an ebay link) are still on the way from china to me, because I could not find another source. In the meantime I cut the original fan wires and inserted a standard fan connector, only way not to touch the controller board.
