I do all my you tube mining videos raw with no edits.

Many times I interchange cpu gpu psu while speaking on my gpu builds.

I have enjoyed seeing the inside of your garage many times Wink

I'm pretty sure I've seen most of them more than once. They've always been a great resource.

I think the raw footage was somewhere around 50 minutes. Luckily most of the rambling was during the repetitive screw removal sections.

Accepted, welcome. Actual starting post count is 1282; I think you accidentally used your Merit count.

Thanks for adding me to the campaign. Yeah that was definitely the wrong number, appreciate you overlooking that.

That makes sense. Seems risky to try and avoid be reported by reporting the post.

I guess success of that scheme would depend on how much digging the MOD does. I've got faith most would catch on pretty quick.

Hard to say what would be best, and in these situations it seems the forum rolls with the status quo.

I would like to thank the academy Darkstar_.

It's just such an honour to be nominated considered, among such an outstanding field.

Thanks for the update Grin

I'll keep an eye out to see who gets in

I cant help it, it was driving me crazy a few minutes into the video when you kept calling everything bolts when there isnt a single bolt on the unit.

https://monroeengineering.com/blog/bolts-vs-screws-whats-the-difference/

No worries, I'm amazed it hadn't been called out before. I actually considered getting rid of the audio as it bothered me; just a slip I hadn't realised until I was editing it.

In the end I just left it there as it still gets the point across.

I have to say mine have run in the solar  array with air cooling and outside temps of 97f

They can survive the heat pretty well

Yeah the few days I was able to run everything so far the temps were hot, but with those voltage settings the machine kept chugging along.

Kudos, to Canaan, and everyone involved in this helpful service!!!

Thanks I'm glad you like it. They really are a cut above the rest. Also if my video shows anything it's that they have built these machines in a way where anyone with the confidence and space can perform there own repairs

Grin Grin Grin Cheesy

He is saying that he never solicited merits and that is true but deep inside, he is hoping for a "GENEROUS" user to give him merit.

I would like to give you one in order for you to stop this kind of thread but I'm not generous at this moment. Maybe next month. Someone generous there who want to give merit to a baby.

Doing so would not deter this sort of behavior, it would just show that eventually someone might shower them with merit.

40 minutes after receiving the 1 merit, they felt the urge to share this great topic with us.
3188  Other / Meta / Re: Sponsoring a political article, and where to host it. on: July 30, 2018, 12:10:25 PM
The main difficulty is that you can't format the page to improve legibility.

Sorry I might be misunderstanding this. Do you mean that you wouldn't be able to format the original post, that's in the locked topic? If so could you not just unlock the topic anytime you felt the need to reformat the post?

Or did you mean that the original content would suffer, by being posted within the confines of a topic using the forums formatting? I guess in this case they could use "Medium" and link to it. Might as well use it for good as opposed to all the coin of the day, multi-platform spammers I've been finding lately.

Quote
Attempting to format a post actually reduces its legibility in most cases imho.

I have seen you mention this a few times usually in reference to not being able to merit someone; as their formatting causes your eyes to bleed. Slight exaggeration

3189  Other / Meta / Re: Sponsoring a political article, and where to host it. on: July 30, 2018, 10:57:54 AM
Why not create it in a locked topic. Then link to that thread in the one you want to use for discussion.

I think I recall coincube iirc, doing this for some of their posts that they found particularly great. They have a topic that is locked and it has links to those posts.

3190  Other / Meta / Re: Is it worth it for now? on: July 30, 2018, 10:29:37 AM
Please stop, making these posts hoping to get some merit for your opinion/advice.

The last one didn't go very well. Roll Eyes

Feel free to post this in the original merit topic if you feel you must; but I guess you expect it to be more visible by creating a new topic.

Edit: oh wait you got as merit there, so now you thought give it another go.
3191  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: SCAM ALERT!!! Lost 0.08 BTC [Please stay safe] on: July 30, 2018, 10:03:32 AM
It is indeed, from now on I will ask the borrower to send any token directly to the exchanges (either to me or to the escrow), no exception. My original thread actually says that token has to be sent to the exchanges but at the end I wanted to be more flexible for this scammer. Little know I had the idea that this would cost me a lot.

Honestly, sorry to see that happen to you.

The blue section, is what scammers thrive on. So in the future stick to the plan you came up with to feel secure in lending.

Good luck with your future lending.
3192  Other / Meta / Re: Reporting post more than once is possible. on: July 30, 2018, 04:59:11 AM
There have been a lot of discussions on marking a previously reported post, or removing the option to report it once again.

No one is going to get one of these badges by reporting the same post a bunch of times, because the MODS still have to take action on the post. I don't know much about the behind the scenes stuff they can see but they would also see if someone else has taken action on the post. '

Anyone trying this would likely just drag down their stats, with a bunch of bad, or unhandled reports for the multiples. Also they would risk a red tag, as a Report spammer or whatever the tag becomes for the people who are all of a sudden interested in reporting just to get a badge.
3193  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Tear down/ Component replacement Avalon Miner 841 on: July 30, 2018, 04:07:40 AM
Thanks,

If you don't mind I plan to link your post on voltage adjustments in the second post. I'm just waiting on a little more information so people aren't just blindly playing around with the settings.

Thanks for those tests by the way, otherwise I wouldn't be running mine at the moment.
3194  Other / Meta / Re: [Guide] Reporting effectively on: July 30, 2018, 03:57:21 AM

I try to message users whenever If I think they need an explanation or some reminder. However, it can pretty difficult to contact everyone, and my inbox gets bombarded with messages. I'm thinking of dedicating a time at the end of each week to reply to the more important messages.

The report history feature is a nice one though I admit. Gives you some feedback on your reporting habits, and does promote improvement.

It's nice when you have the time. For the most part there isn't a lot of information people need, but on the off chance it is good to get a little feedback.

So far looking at the report history feature I can us the "unhandled" to gauge whether or not the board moderator wants to deal with those posts. For me a lot of the time my reports are for wrong section, and certain boards aren't as finicky as others in regards to where they want certain topics.

The only feature I think it is missing is the report itself that was submitted e.g. "low quality", "wrong section", " plagiarism" and the many others. It could help hone in on why a report was bad, or unhandled in case you forget exactly why you reported it.

Linked here is a video that will show you the steps required to replace any component of you Avalon 841. In reality their designs are so similar, that it is good for all models starting from the 721 series. Feel free to ignore the guy in the video calling it an 821 Roll Eyes. The outer shell has an 821 label on it, and I didn't notice the difference until my final repair.

Video

Thanks to Steven Mosher with Canaan for giving me the opportunity. It was simple I was sent an assembled unit that was non-functioning; and was tasked with identifying the issue and performing repairs. I was provided with an After Sales Support Engineer contact from Canaan, Yuxing Wei. I was able to update Yuxing on what I thought was the issue and how I was going to proceed; he also confirmed with me when I had completed the repairs.

Shipment Contents

*Will update post with screen shots *

First test - Getting a baseline for your issues
I was able to log into the controller, and the unit was visible. Digging a little deeper into the API log it was apparent that none of the 4 hashboards were doing any work. There are a few different issues this could have been.
 • 4 faulty hashboards
 • A combination of faulty hashboards and faulty PMU's
 • 2 faulty PMU's  - Despite them showing proper numbers for voltages, there can be an issue with the actual connections to the boards.
So I began as deep in as possible, and replaced all 4 hashboards and reassembled the Miner. I do have footage of this, but felt the published video was of better quality while still showing everything necessary.

Second test - How to identify if the problem is a Hashboard or PMU

This test revealed forward progress. I now had 3 hashboards that were operational, with MW3 still appearing dead. I was left with 2 possibilities:

 • The replacement hashboard was a dud
 • There was an issue with the PMU2 - Attached to MW2 and MW3

To identify the problem board at this point, I swapped Hashboard positions. I removed Hashboard MW3, and MW0 and swapped them. These boards both sit at the top position of the miner but are each powered by separate PMU's. So I am taking a known functional board and switching it's position with the problem board.

Doing this allows me to see if the board is the problem or the board position. After the switch if the problem is the Hashboard, the API log would show MW0 as dead, and MW3 hashing. If the problem is PMU related you will still see MW3 showing dead, despite there being a different functional Hashboard in that position.

In my case the issue was an issue with PMU2. This was confirmed by MW3 still showing dead.

Third test

Armed with the knowledge that the Hashboards were all functional, I replaced PMU2. This was a fairly straightforward replacement, but it did surprise me. Using the API log I didn't notice anything that tiped me off to a faulty PMU as all my "VI" and "VO" number looked good. It was only through the previous Hashboard swap that I was able to confirm this issue. So it goes to show that you should not jusmp to conclusions and take your time in identifying the issue.

After swapping out the PMU, everything is functioning as expected.

Identifying Parts

When changing out the PMU units I noticed that one side is marked with an "L" and the other is marked with an "R"

So I just gained access to my report log. This is going to be helpful when reporting those clumps of garbage I stumble open from time to time.

I must say it's been nice having some feedback/conversations with some of the Mods along the way. I appreciate that some have the time to reach out and explain a particular action they may be taking, despite them being in no way obligated to do so.

Thanks again Welsh for bringing the log to my attention as it became the tool I could look forward to receiving and putting to use.
3198  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why are some people still skeptical about climate change? on: July 29, 2018, 08:42:32 AM
I have to admit I'm still on the fence of climate change. I don't think the tiny amount of pollution by humans really has an everlasting effect on our atmosphere.

Just to clarify there is nothing tiny about the amount of pollution humans are responsible for.

A glaring example would be "Great Pacific garbage patch"

I'll admit I am significantly less active on the environmental front that I was even 5 years ago. Don't get me wrong I still actively do what I can to reduce my impact as it's something I find value in doing.

The reason I feel most people I will meet through my lifetime can easily dismiss climate change is due to our life expectancy. They are banking on the fact that they will not be here to deal with the negative outcomes. Though arguably the increase in unprecedented storm activity is being linked as an early indicator that things are changing.
3199  Other / Meta / Re: Seeking reporter badge images on: July 29, 2018, 07:28:19 AM

The moment that happens, I'll stop reporting posts.

Well let's just tuck that little guy in the same pile as KYC. Obviously not worth it.

For me personally it would have been useful at times, in lieu of anything identifying a post as having been reported.
It would be much better if the Report to moderator link turns red for any post reported by you.
Agreed, not even just for posts you've reported. Anything reported in general, this would prevent duplicate reports.
